Vaping / Puff Pipes / E Cigarettes are currently a problem for Gold Coast high schools including ours. In the past week, approximately ten students have had the Student Code of Conduct applied to their behaviour. Today we called an assembly for the Year 7 to 9 students to (a) make them aware of the harm that vaping can do to them through a guest speaker (b) make them aware of the law through Snr Cnst Dave Sammons and (c) let them know what they can expect in terms of a school response if they bring vaping products onto the school grounds.

Growing Good Humans

Our Year 12 cohort recently participated in the first ever Growing Good Humans Day, a day focused on equipping our students with a range of skills and strategies to assist them in gaining self-awareness, safe relationships and becoming the best version of themselves. The day was a great success and it was pleasing to see this cohort commit wholly to a program of which they have had such a hand in building and developing. A huge thanks goes to our school community for their support and providing these students with such an opportunity. Particular thanks go to our teacher presenters; Paul Bullpitt, Anna Wyatt, Shane Roberts and Aaron Zimmerle as well as our external experts; Shiike Vanderwerff, Tommy Herschell, Ashlee Thomas and the team of Youth-based Health Nurses from Queensland Health.

Our Year 11 cohorts will commence exposure to the Growing Good Men and Growing Good Women programs in Week 9 and 10 of this term.

Year 12 Update

Year 12 students and parents will receive information later this week regarding the 2021 Graduation Ceremony and Formal Dinner, to be held at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 17 November, 2021. This information will be handed to students at Assembly and emailed home. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of this talented cohort at the completion of their studies.

Most Year 12 students have now received their 2021 Senior Jersey. If your student hasn't please send them to Y Block to pick it up. This additional uniform item is a privilege for our senior students as their leadership within the school transgresses into the community. All students and parents are reminded that the jersey is traditionally a winter item, and should be worn on top of the school shirt. We look forward to seeing our Year 12's in their Senior Jerseys this winter.

Assessment

Year 11 students are currently completing or have recently completed the first assessment for Unit 1 in the QCE. Reports will be issued for Year 11s in the last week of term.

Year 11 students will then finalise their Unit 1 assessment in Week 4/5 of Term 2 in mid-May this year. As per QCAA guidelines students cannot change subjects mid Unit so no subject changes are available to Year 11s until late May.

Year 10 and 12 students should be busy completing assignments and studying for upcoming exams.

Year 10 and 12 students commence shutdown in Week 10 of term (29 March to 1 April). The timetable for senior assessment and the school assessment policy has been published on the school website: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment

Students can also download a copy on the school’s K drive under curriculum.

All students need to be aware of the date, room and time of their scheduled exam. During shutdown students only have to attend school for scheduled exams or study sessions.

All assessment tasks are due at 9:00am on the due date not during class time. Students who are absent for an exam will need to provide a medical certificate and apply for a change of date with their HOD on the next day they are at school. Similarly students who are applying for an extension or special consideration will need to download an extension/change of date form from the school website and submit to their relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date.

Year 10 and 12 reports will be issued early in Term 2.

VETis courses

All students in Senior Secondary are eligible to receive VET in School (VETis) funding to complete a VET certificate that the government deem are in demand. Many students utilise this funding in timetabled classes for example Construction, Health Services, and Hospitality and Fitness classes. Other VETis course are advertised in the student notices and school newsletter. These may include going to an outside college or provider 1 day per week (e.g. TAFE). Students who are not aiming for a tertiary pathway are particularly encouraged to complete a VETis funded course as this will increase their chance of gaining employment once they leave school. Please contact Ms McQueen in F block if you require more information.

Other senior schooling news:

Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.

Students in Year 10 are again reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in Year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

Study Skills Strategies

The Spacing effect

Information that is studied or repeated over time leads to long-term retention. When students are exposed to and engage with information numerous times, spaced across multiple intervals it solidifies long-term memory, which enhances their ability for retention and recall.

As shown in figure 1, by reviewing information at intervals, not just at the end of a study cycle, students can recall a greater percentage of the information with a higher level of accuracy. (QCAA Strategies for retaining and recalling information for assessment, 2020)

Our students and teachers have reached the tough end of the term. It’s going to be all about hard work, working smart and consistency to get through the last two weeks and all those assessment items. We have been talking to the students about what it means to work hard and show industry in the classroom.

I am really encouraged by the level of detailed feedback that students are receiving from their teachers. This feedback and responding to it is a vital step in improvement of an individual task.

Please encourage your young person to read any feedback on drafts very carefully and ask them if they understand what the teacher is telling them about their attempts.

The other challenging step for students is being organised enough to meet those timelines. This is all about the working smarter idea. As a parent staying connected to your young person’s deadlines and coaching them to meet these is one way we can work together in their education. Please discuss with them when their deadlines are and work with them to achieve this around their other at-home commitments.

All these things will allow you to extend your support role in their learning which as a school we are grateful for and value the role you play in this as parents.

Term 1 Reports

Student reports will be emailed home on the last day of term. Please ensure that the email address we have recorded for you is current.

Term 1 reports are interim reports. This means that they will indicate a child’s Term 1 achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject with grades only. We encourage you to follow up on this report by attending Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 2. Information about how to book for Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent with reports.

NAPLAN 2021

At this stage, PBC will be participating in NAPLAN online this year. Tests will be conducted in Week 4 and 5 next term. The online format is interesting in that it will be adaptive and will cater to the diverse levels that students are at based on their responses to early questions on the tests.

We encourage all students to be part of NAPLAN if they are able to do so, and we make special provisions for students with disabilities. PBC teachers frequently use NAPLAN data to make decisions about differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom.

The Sports Excellence program has gotten off to a strong start in 2021. PBC alumni and Rugby League National championship winning coach Mr Aaron Zimmerle has returned after touring the world with his family to take up the position of full time Athlete Development Manager.

His role encompasses all of our Year 7 to 9 Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) sessions where athletes are benchmarked against a number of ASCA tests regarding functional movement and strength. Mr Zimmerle has organised for a number of university interns who are studying Exercise Science to assist him to ensure we deliver a comprehensive program. Correct technique and understanding the why of each exercise is of paramount importance to ensure holistic development of the young athlete.

Our junior secondary students have also started to be screened by our own School Physiotherapist Mr Matt Fechner from Inspire Physiotherapy. This process will help identify any deficiencies or imbalances so that we may prescribe specific exercises for the individual athlete.

Speed sessions for our Year 9 students have also begun in Term 1. Momentum Sports conducts these sessions with our Rugby League, Tennis, Touch, Soccer boys and Basketball athletes where they participate in an eight week program. All students are pre and post tested so that athletes can track their improvement.

PBC’s senior sports excellence programs have also benefitted from the new role with every group now having access to both a professionally written S&C program and a qualified strength and conditioning specialist in either Mr Zimmerle or Mr Johnston.

Lastly a big thank you to all the parents who have nominated PBC as their Rebel Sport community giveback partner. As a direct result of your nominating our school PBC has been credited with over $4000 worth of goods from Rebel that has purchased gym equipment and other items for our HPE / SPX courses.

Stay tuned for some more exciting announcements coming out soon.

Neil Mackay – Sports Excellence Head of Department

Week 7 was by far the biggest week for the Year 7 Rookie Reds starting last Saturday at the Tonie Carroll Cup up at Beenleigh. After some exhilarating team tries and bruising defence in the opening rounds, the boys got to experience their first taste of the Rivalry facing off against our nemesis Keebra Park in the Semi final. The performance was deserving of the Red jersey they so proudly wear grinding out a big win and qualifying for the Grand final against Marsden High. In a gripping match the boys went down by single try but walked away from it knowing that they can now compete with any of the top sides.

Back to school Monday saw Paul Dyer and Jack Reed from the Brisbane Broncos come down and run a skills clinic for the boys, to which Paul commented afterwards that the Rookie Reds showed good skill and a great willingness to learn.

Wednesday then saw our first school Cluster day which means the boys are able to learn and train all day. After reviewing our testing performances and setting our own personal and team goals, the boys learned about the tactics that are used in Rugby League Defence and Offence. Throw in a few Team Bonding Games and Lunch and it was time to join our other Rugby League teams for a whole program induction. After learning the history of the Reds and our standards from the Open As Head Coach Tim Maccan, the boys were put in teams mixed of Year 7-12s and embarked on a fun filled hour of completing the Reds Amazing Race around the school. It was wonderful to see the boys of all ages getting to know each other and working together. It is the inclusive and unselfish culture that we strive for.

HPE week was a great opportunity for students and teachers to engage in a range of health, wellbeing and activity options. Thank you to the students and teachers who participated. HPE week itself incorporated the culmination of RED(M)S week, Rise Every Day Mentally Stronger. On Wednesday evening we hosted the annual parent event where conversations about mental wellbeing are facilitated. This year the focus was on opening conversation between parents and students. Our sincere thanks to the panel who provided a range of stories and advice for us to consider. The panel members were;

  • Anna Willis - PBC JS Guidance officer
  • Steve Jones - PBC SS Guidance officer
  • Brad Dixon - PBC SS Dean of Students
  • Mitch Kennedy - PBC SS Deputy Principal
  • Damian Becker - Headspace Tweed Heads
  • James Petersen - BreakingFREE
  • Andrew Thomas and Kendall Waters - parents

During the evening we were supported by Hilary Wilson (School Based Youth Health Nurse) and Wendy Wise (PBC JS Deputy Principal). We believe the amount of leadership support shown by the PBC leaders indicates the intent we as a school have in relation to student wellbeing. Personally I feel grateful to work in a school that takes student wellbeing seriously. During lunch on Thursday, students had the opportunity to have a conversation about the voices in our heads that we all experience. Our sincere thanks to Ashlee Thomas from The Secret Burden who lead the conversation with our students. Our congratulations to the Year 12 Health students for organising and conducting a successful 2021 RED(M)S project.

The final HPE week event was the inaugral touch challenge versus the Year 12 Physical Education students. Despite the short game there was plenty of excitement and banter. The end result was a draw.

As we now move into an assessment phase for senior school students, we wish them the best of luck for upcoming assessment and hope HPE week provided some enjoyment. As a faculty we are grateful to the students for their respectful and mature interactions.

On Tuesday, 7A visited Hinze Dam as part of their Integrated Learning Program. Students learnt about water options for South East Queensland, considered the social, economic and environmental trade-offs involved in water supply alternatives, carried out water quality testing on water from the dam, walked over and beside the spillway, shared their lunch with local birds and had a great time getting to know each other better.

The PBC Leo’s club have once again started the year off with a strong start. We have had a total of 4 meetings and have contributed to the community through donations, weekly BBQ’s, and welcomed new recruits to the PBC Leo’s.

The CEO and Founder of “Baby Give Back”, Carley, came to talk about her amazing charity that offers support to new families in the community. The PBC Leo’s donated $500 in support and organised a day on 13 March to volunteer our time at the Baby Give Back warehouse to help clean toys and strollers, build cots, and sort clothing.

During February, the PBC Leo’s Club were visited from Tallebudgera State School and the Leo’s donated $600 to help with the student leader team building day. PBC Leo’s are proud once again to be sponsoring a child through the Smith Family and participating in Clean up Australia Day – 7 March.

Reds Go Riot Comedy Night #2 - Another massive success!

With our heartfelt thanks to Bendigo Bank Tugun Community Branch, PBC Leos, the P&C and Mandy Nolan, another fantastic night was had on Friday 26 February for the second instalment of Reds Go Riot - Comedy Showcase. Alongside the hilarious Mandy and the whimsical and unpredictable Dusty Rich (South Africa), 13 Reds rose to the occasion; Jett Lindsay, Alex O'Connor, Benjamin Burgess, Ebony Larman, Marnie Lamber(y)t, Jai Uhlmann, Caleb Partridge, Wade Wang, Mischa Hodson, Lucas Hein, Lucas Godwin, Brock Tighe and Bobby Smith. We even had messages from Fiona O'Loughlin, Urzila Carlson, The Nelson Twins and Gold Logie Winner Tom Gleeson - you know who he is, right?

Each set delivered original material about all the trials and tribulations (!) of being a teenager, but with students' own unique spin. The result? An audience whose faces were sore from laughter. By the end of week 5, we definitely needed that break away from the mayhem! And to top it off, we raised some good coin for Beyond Blue, total still being worked out!

Next, PBCs funny people will headed to HOTA to workshop and refine their material for Melbourne International Comedy Festival's Class Clowns competition. An annual competition by one of the world's biggest Arts Festivals, which has launched the careers of comics like Joel Creasey, Rhys Nicholson and Aaron Chen. This is an invaluable opportunity to continue the development stages of routines, make their sets punchier and really get polished - in addition to gaining stage time and experience in front of industry professionals. Last year we had two state finalists and one National Finalist. Although the 2020 National Final was spoilt by you-know-what, students again have the opportunity to perform at States in Brisbane at the Powerhouse and Nationals at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne on 31 March, be on telly and win cash! So proud of everyone involved!

Class Clowns Competition

Following the success of the Reds Go Riot Comedy Night PBCs funny people headed to HOTA to workshop and refine their material for Melbourne International Comedy Festival's Class Clowns competition. This year the kids had great fun and Marnie Lambert and Benjamin Burgess won their heat and got through to the Qld State Final at Brisbane's Powerhouse. They all did so well. Congratulations Marnie and Ben!

State Finals - Class Clowns

Three of our riotous Reds went up to Brisbane’s Powerhouse on Saturday 13 March for the Qld State Final of Class Clowns run by Melbourne International Comedy Festival, one of the world’s biggest Arts Festivals. Marnie Lambert (Y9), Benjamin Burgess (Y10) and Jai Uhlmann (Y10 - 2020 State Final Winner and National Finalist) took to the stage like pros and really owned their space getting lots of laughs with their polished material from the recent Reds Go Riot Showcase. Competing against schools from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Cairns, these guys all engaged in a rehearsal workshop with Damien Power (The Project, Tonightly, Just For Laughs) - taking onboard valuable professional feedback and running with it. We’re very proud of you all! What a fantastic achievement.

Jai will be competing in the Class Clowns National Final in Melbourne at the Forum Theatre on 31 March during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival! Best of luck Jai! We know you’ll smash it and have an absolute ball.

Class Clowns is an annual competition that runs Australia-wide and is open to students Years 9-12. For more information please feel free to contact Mrs Hull ebhul0@eq.edu.au about how to get involved in 2022.

Men of the Moment

We were very fortunate to be a featured school at the recent Youth Male Summit, hosted by TSS and focused on ‘Men of The Moment’. HOD Positive Behaviour and a team of wonderful young men and women participated in a range of activities throughout the day, highlighted by hosting a 1-hour session on our own journey with Growing Good Humans. The students were privileged to participate in question-time with an all-star panel at the conclusion of the evening including Australian cricket legends Matthew Hayden and Darren Lehmann, Paralympian Curtis McGrath and our very own Tommy Herschell from ‘Find Your Feet’.

Particular thanks go to our student representatives and speakers, Hayden Topping (11), Peta Peachey (12), Lilli Carmichael (12), Jude McClay (12) and Zackary Hubbard (12). The students spoke with passion, honesty, pride and clarity regarding their experiences with school and the change they are starting to see in their community.

We look forward to seeing every student engage with Growing Good Humans programs this year and work towards being more honest, accountable and better versions of themselves.

Grip Star Socks Joins!

Shout out to our latest 2021 PBC Alliance Gold Partner, Grip Star Socks!

PBC Alumni Joel Mulvenney is one of the directors behind Grip Star Socks and has donated a pair of these amazing socks to every student in the Soccer Excellence program as well as the Year 12 Rugby League and Year 12 AFL students.

Grip Star socks are more than just seriously grippy – they are also proving effective tackling the persistent foot problems that can hold athletes back. High performance athletes are always seeking a competitive edge, and maintaining happy and healthy feet is crucial to maximising performance potential in all sports.

Now Grip Star is proving the long-awaited game changer in easing the discomfort and preventing blisters, fungus, bruising and lost toenails. With strategically positioned grip panels on the sole, Grip Star socks reduces friction and eliminates sliding; while the ventilated, stay-dry material draws heat and sweat away from the foot. The result is seriously happy feet that can perform better without discomfort or pain.

Thank you Grip Star Socks for supporting our students!
