Dear PBC Community,

Kern_Chris.jpg

It is a true privilege to undertake the Executive Principal position in Chris Capra’s absence.

I have held leadership roles on the Gold Coast since 1996.  During this time, I have admired the innovation and success of PBC and am looking forward to contributing positively to this work.

I am passionate about student improvement which is targeted at their individual need and supported by expert teachers and support staff.  I also have a focus on student effort and behaviour with the expectation that students achieve high levels in both.  This forms the foundation for their learning progression.

Throughout the rest of this term I will be active in meeting staff, students and community members to understand the PBC way of working.  Every school has its own unique actions which is part of the challenge but also the excitement of starting in a new school.

I look forward to meeting many of you in the near future.

Chris Kern
Executive Principal

With three weeks remaining in Term 3, Senior students will participate in assessment which will impact normal timetabled classes. We wish all of our students the best in their preparation and sitting of all assessment during this time. Major points are as follows:

  • Year 12 Full Shutdown all of Week 9 and 10 (September 4 to 15) for Mock exams and Applied assessment (9:00am start).
  • Year 11 Full Shutdown Week 10 (September 11 to 15)
  • Year 10 Full Shutdown Week 10 (September 11 to 15)
  • Students that are behind in their VET certificates will also be required to attend school during shutdown to catch up.

External exams will commence at 9:00am, PBC will have the same start time for Mock exams. During this time, students should attend school for exams only, in complete school uniform. All exam timetables for all of the above are located here -

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment.

Study Skills

With mock exams and external exams quickly approaching for our Year 12 students it is imperative they are preparing by engaging in practice questions on a weekly basis.

Completing practice problems and writing prompts deliberately engages students with information, helps them to consolidate their understanding and moves it from short-term to long-term memory, reducing cognitive load.

There are a number of ways students can do this, some examples include:

  • Writing possible questions from notes;
  • completing practice tests (under varied conditions; open/closed book, timed/untimed);
  • practicing writing over a variety of topics (by hand is important as exams are handwritten in most cases)

Academic integrity course for students completing senior studies

The QCAA has released a factsheet for how parents/carers can promote and ensure their students maintain academic integrity:

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/snr_academic_integrity_factsheet_parents_carers.pdf

They suggest that parents/carers could, for example:

  • encourage students to complete the course academic integrity course on the myQCE website
  • reinforce the importance of ethical conduct and study practices
  • support students to understand family, community and school expectations
  • ensure students understand the consequences of academic misconduct
  • support students to develop the skills needed to submit their own work
  • encourage students to seek additional information and/or advice from their school if they have

questions after completing the course

  • discuss any concerns they may have with the school.

Hospitality course

Year 12 students following a Personalised pathway will not have exams in week 10. These students may elect to complete a short course in Hospitality on Wednesday September 13 to 15. The details of the course are below:

Short Course / Skillset (Aurora Training Institute)

Duration- 3 days

Fund Source- Fee for Service

Student Fees- $220 per student

SITHFAB025- Prepare and serve espresso coffee

SITHFAB021- Provide responsible service of alcohol

SITHGAM022- Provide responsible gambling services

SITXFSA005- Use hygienic practices for food safety

This constitutes 25% of a certificate 3 in Hospitality and will attain 2 QCE points (assuming students have not completed these competencies in other courses), but more importantly may help students with future employment. The Next Step data certainly indicates that the majority of our students enter the Hospitality industry after they leave school.

Any interested students can register with Sonia Shreeve or Mick McDougall in Y block.

First Aid and Safety course

Over 40 Year 12 students successfully completed the First Aid and Safety course in August.

A final First Aid and Safety course will be conducted at PBC on Wednesday October 18. To register for this course students, need to collect a letter from Y block and ensure payments are made by September 11 ($100 for year 12s and $75 for year 11s). This course also attains 2 QCE points.

External Assessment

To access the External Assessment timetable please visit the myQCE website:

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/external-assessment/timetable

The External Assessment Guide has also been published on the myQCE website:

https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/_media/documents/external_assessment_guide_students.pdf

Year 12s should be familiarising themselves with this document as it answers all questions about exams especially regarding equipment, calculators allowed and directions to students.

Year 12 students also have access to practice exams for all General subjects on the QCAA website. This should be used in preparation for both the upcoming Mock exam and the External assessment. As an example, the practice External exams for General Maths and General English can be located on the following links:

 https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects/english/english/assessment

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects/mathematics/general-mathematics/assessment

It is expected that all students complete these practice exams for their General subjects in preparation for their External Assessment.

Students are again reminded that they must complete all assessment in Applied and General subjects to be awarded a result.

Year 11

Year 11 students will finalise Unit 2 in shutdown during week 10 of this term September 13 to 17.

Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of November 21 to 25.

The school commences Unit 3 in term 4, this is the last opportunity for Year 11 students to change subjects in Senior Schooling. Any student requesting a subject change should come to Y block at the end of this term to collect a subject change form.

A reminder that all students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete Unit 1 or 2 gain in 2023 to be eligible for the QCE.

Year 10

Year 10 students have a full week of shutdown from September 12 to 16 to finalise exams and assignments.

Year 10 students are again reminded that they are much better off commencing a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SAT) in Year10 than in Year 11. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information regarding SATs.

Assessment Policy

This policy is published on the school website.

If students are absent for an exam they must contact their teacher and provide a medical certificate

A reminder that all assignments are due at 9:00am on the due date and that teachers are instructed to make a judgement on the evidence, which is available at this time. Late assignments are not accepted.

Students are reminded to back up their work via USBs, emails or cloud storage as computer malfunctions and losing assignments are not grounds for an extension.

Yr 8 Numeracy Awards

Over the past 6 weeks, 21 students from year 8 have participated in a numeracy rotation class designed to bridge the gap and build a stronger foundation of skills used within mathematics. Students enjoyed an interactive style of learning and celebrated their success with a pizza party and awards ceremony. Our top achiever was Jaylon Russell who proudly walked away with the coveted Dolphins rugby league jersey. Jaylon was committed to the program and strived for excellence in every lesson. An honourable mention goes to Keira who achieved substantial growth in her pre and post testing scores. Well done to Mr Moakes and Ms Gibson with the help of Miss Lawry for executing a great intervention program.

SCIENCE WEEK

In week 6 this term we celebrated National Science Week. Students in PBC’s very own Science Club led their peers through activities highlighting the theme ‘Innovation – Powering future industries.’ There was a heap of prizes up for grabs!

  • Science Week Winner - For every activity that students participated in they received a raffle ticket.
  • Show Me Science – Students entered a short video or image with an accompanying blurb of science in their daily.
  • Class Display competition – Classes entered a display showcasing this year’s science week theme in the Science Expo.

On Monday morning year 6 Elanora Primary school students attended a themed science show showcasing wind turbines, an AI and sound demonstration, fireballs and big bangs! During lunch 1 PBC students attended the same show to rave reviews. In the afternoon PBC Science Club students led year 6 Currumbin Primary School students through an Escape Room activity where students investigated different types of soil involving the use of microscopes. The students were very engaged and excited to be in a high school lab and our Science Clubbers did a wonderful job of being enthusiastic and supportive role models!

On Tuesday students attended a Science Expo held in the Trade Training Centre. There were many exciting displays that to interact with:

  • Mr Buchanan’s displays of Robotics, Drones, Virtual Reality and 3D Printing were extremely popular among students. Students used remote control robots to play ball games, immerse themselves in the virtual world and see up close the astounding versatility of a 3D printer.
  • Students also got to experiment with the AI technology Dall-E to create AI generated images.
  • Junior Secondary students had the opportunity to speak with delegates from QUT, UQ, Griffith and SCU about science pathways and careers.
  • Class entries in the Class Display Competition were showcased.

On Thursday students had the choice of participating in hands on activities in our labs. Students constructed a Hydrogen Cell learning about the challenges of extracting Hydrogen from water. They created art works with Art Bots made by Science Club students, and constructed a key ring, necklace or bracelet using binary code to create a cypher of their name or initials.

Friday finished off the week with the announcement of this year’s Science Week winners!

  • Show Me Science – Madison Kling-McCauliffe with her entry of the physics involved with riding a bike over a jump – we loved the videos!
  • Science Week Winner – Madison Kling-McCauliffe (again!)
  • Class Display competition – S4M and Miss Hart

It was a fabulous week! We can’t thank all of our wonderful lab technicians and teacher volunteers enough for making this week possible and our Science Clubbers for their enthusiasm and initiative in presenting the activities!

Until next year – yours in science,

Ms Crandall and Ms Bramley.

PBC is proud to announce the launch of our new compartmentalised bins and waste collection process. On Monday 14th August, two students from our sustainability club, Hannah Daley and Harlo Close, joined Deputy Principal of Junior Secondary, Mrs Wendy Wise, and Deputy Principal of Senior Secondary, Mr Mitch Kennedy, to cut the ribbon on the first of 42 new stainless steel bin cabinets that have been placed around the school. These cabinets replaced our previous system of mostly general waste bins and allow students to sort and separate their waste into four streams: food waste, co-mingled recyclables, CRS-eligible beverage containers (redeemable for 10c each), and general waste. Sorting and separating our waste will reduce our waste to landfill by more than 70% and allow us to both save thousands of dollars on our waste collection charges and also earn thousands of dollars more from the Container Refund Scheme and other sustainability initiatives. This is just the beginning of a range of sustainability changes that will enable staff and students to easily recycle and compost large amounts of waste that would have previously been sent to landfill. Please encourage your children to take a few moments to read the stickers on the new bins and correctly sort their waste into the appropriate compartment – it will help PBC to become more environmentally sustainable.

Some tips for helping our new process work as well as it can are:

  • Look for the 10c logo on beverage containers to see if they're eligible for the scheme
  • Ensure all drink containers are empty have their lids off before placing them in the bin
  • Place only food waste in the food waste bin - no packaging goes in here (even if it’s compostable)
  • Food waste excludes large bones, oyster/scallop shells and liquids. Small bones such as chicken bones are acceptable, along with meat, dairy and items such as fruit and vegetable scraps.
  • If students are unsure where an item goes, they should place it in the general waste compartment

Please help PBC on our journey towards becoming a greener and more sustainable place.
Ms Benigno and Mr Pasley

This term has been a very busy one in House & Care. The term started with PBC’s first ever Spike Ball competition which was a big hit with the kids and drew a good crowd to the oval. Phoenician students Jake and Bailey battled it out with Athenian students Kai and Will in the Spike Ball Final. It was a back and forth match but there could be only one winning team and the Athenians took out the title as PBC’s first ever Spike Ball Champions!

Week 3 was PBC’s annual Track & Field Carnival. All students who attended the day had a great time with the Bubble Soccer proving a hit with the Junior students throughout the day. The Athenians continued their run of wins and took out the 2023 Carnival.

Weeks 6-8 saw the return of one of PBC’s favourite House Events – PBC’s Got Talent. It was great to see so many talented humans audition and show off their skills. 14 talented acts were chosen to perform live for their peers at the semi-finals in week 7, the shows were a hit and the crowd grew with each show. Wednesday of week 8 will be the live Grand Final where students Imogen Stewart, Rubi Nasorawale, Elishka Chalupova, Danika Mason, Silan Tal-Meyer and Jua Nakauchi will perform for the chance to be crowned PBC’s Got Talent Champion for 2023!

Students v Teachers 2023

BballTvSAug2023.jpg

In what is always a spectacle of raw teacher talent, the students vs teachers Basketball was hyped up to be a battle. Some pre-game discussion between the sides ensured it was going to be a hard fought game. Both teams started out slow with some early misses but it didn’t take long for the students to start getting easy buckets. However, Mr Tippett was there to make sure they didn’t get far ahead and a few easy baskets from the teachers gave them the lead. Jayden Flood and Roan Moloney soon caught fire, hitting multiple 3-pointers each and pushing the game to be basket for basket. Some cool heads and patience allowed the teachers to gain the lead back with an nice bucket around the rim. The students tried so hard but couldn’t get clutch up and the teachers walked away with a tough win 24-22. Congratulations to all involved!

Growing Good Humans - Conversations that Count

Growing Good Humans had an amazing start to term 3 with two events to celebrate NAIDOC week 2023 ‘For our Elders’.  In week 1 ‘The last daughter’ film was screened in the PBC Theatre to a crowd of parents, students, staff and community members.  The Last Daughter is a documentary feature film about Aunty Brenda Matthew’s journey to uncover the truth about her past and reconcile the two sides of her family.  It was an emotional evening that sparked conversations about where Australia is moving in the future with its history.

The following week Growing Good Humans hosted ‘Conversations that Count – Conversations that Heal’.  Our local community members Aunty Joyce Summers, Selwyn Apanui, Josh Morris-Langton, Jimilla Dix-Hudson were joined by Aunty Brenda Matthews from ‘The Last Daughter’.  The panel lead discussions on their experiences as First Nations People in the 21st Century.  They provided insights into their connection to country, modern cultural practices and the ongoing effects of generational trauma and history.  Audience members had the opportunity to ask questions and build their understanding of how to have a conversation that counts.

Fight 4 Youth

Walk With Us and Fight 4 Youth teams

We are excited to invite you to an event that promises a lot of laughs, a great time, and most importantly, a chance to make a positive impact on our local community. Our community has faced its fair share of challenges, especially our youth over the past few years and now is the perfect opportunity to come together and support one another.

Date: Saturday 9 September, 2023

Time: 2pm - 6pm

Location: Fight 4 Youth, 44a Currumbin Creek Road, Currumbin.

We're hosting a family fun day as part of Child Protection Week. This year's theme is - every child in every community deserves a fair go.

One of the main attractions is the DUNK TANK!! The concept is simple but incredibly entertaining: we'll have nominated volunteers take their place above the dunk tank, and for a small donation, you'll have the chance to dunk them into a pool of refreshing water!

We're seeking nominations from our community for individuals who are willing to be dunked for this fantastic cause. It could be your favorite teacher, dedicated coach, or even that friendly parent who's always ready to lend a helping hand. If you know someone who has been an essential part of our community and is up for some fun, nominate them today by replying to this email or contacting us at 0413 086 646.

But that's not all! In addition to the dunk tank excitement, we'll also have games, face painting, free activities, live entertainment and delicious food stalls to keep everyone entertained and tummies full. The event is a free event with some of the activities will attract a gold coin donation. There is also a boxing exhibition for some of the Gold Coast's up and coming legends. There is a cover charge to the boxing and it will be an event not to be missed (see attached flyer for more details)

It's a perfect opportunity for families, friends, and neighbors to come together, enjoy a day of laughter, and contribute to the well-being of our community.

In times of difficulty, our community has consistently shown its strength by coming together and supporting one another. We have organisations from around the Gold Coast coming along to share their amazing knowledge with our local community. Your participation will make a real difference in the lives of our fellow community members who are currently struggling. All the proceeds from this event will go directly towards assisting our fellow community members in need.

Mark your calendars for Saturday September 9th and spread the word to your friends and family. Let's rally around this event and show our unity as we make waves of change together!

Thank you for your support. We can't wait to see you at the event! If you can please share far and wide and if possible within your social media channels it would be greatly appreciated.
