SCIENCE WEEK

In week 6 this term we celebrated National Science Week. Students in PBC’s very own Science Club led their peers through activities highlighting the theme ‘Innovation – Powering future industries.’ There was a heap of prizes up for grabs!

  • Science Week Winner - For every activity that students participated in they received a raffle ticket.
  • Show Me Science – Students entered a short video or image with an accompanying blurb of science in their daily.
  • Class Display competition – Classes entered a display showcasing this year’s science week theme in the Science Expo.

On Monday morning year 6 Elanora Primary school students attended a themed science show showcasing wind turbines, an AI and sound demonstration, fireballs and big bangs! During lunch 1 PBC students attended the same show to rave reviews. In the afternoon PBC Science Club students led year 6 Currumbin Primary School students through an Escape Room activity where students investigated different types of soil involving the use of microscopes. The students were very engaged and excited to be in a high school lab and our Science Clubbers did a wonderful job of being enthusiastic and supportive role models!

On Tuesday students attended a Science Expo held in the Trade Training Centre. There were many exciting displays that to interact with:

  • Mr Buchanan’s displays of Robotics, Drones, Virtual Reality and 3D Printing were extremely popular among students. Students used remote control robots to play ball games, immerse themselves in the virtual world and see up close the astounding versatility of a 3D printer.
  • Students also got to experiment with the AI technology Dall-E to create AI generated images.
  • Junior Secondary students had the opportunity to speak with delegates from QUT, UQ, Griffith and SCU about science pathways and careers.
  • Class entries in the Class Display Competition were showcased.

On Thursday students had the choice of participating in hands on activities in our labs. Students constructed a Hydrogen Cell learning about the challenges of extracting Hydrogen from water. They created art works with Art Bots made by Science Club students, and constructed a key ring, necklace or bracelet using binary code to create a cypher of their name or initials.

Friday finished off the week with the announcement of this year’s Science Week winners!

  • Show Me Science – Madison Kling-McCauliffe with her entry of the physics involved with riding a bike over a jump – we loved the videos!
  • Science Week Winner – Madison Kling-McCauliffe (again!)
  • Class Display competition – S4M and Miss Hart

It was a fabulous week! We can’t thank all of our wonderful lab technicians and teacher volunteers enough for making this week possible and our Science Clubbers for their enthusiasm and initiative in presenting the activities!

Until next year – yours in science,

Ms Crandall and Ms Bramley.
