Junior Secondary Update

Work Experience 

Work experience is approaching in Week 10.   Final deadline for forms is the 31 August. 

 

Teacher Aide Appreciation Week 

From the 28 August until the 1 September we celebrate Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week. This is a perfect time to celebrate the wonderful work our teacher aides do at PBC. For students wanting to show their gratitude there are printed thank-you notes that can be collected from A block Student Services to record your personalised messages of appreciation. Together let’s acknowledge, appreciate and recognise the positive impact teacher aides have in making a difference in our school every day. 

 

Year 7 Camp 

Year 7 Camp is in Week 2 of Term 4 – final payment is due 31 August.  

 

Subject Selections 

Year 8 Students have been delivered a preview of all subject outlines and been shown how to select their 2024 electives.   

Subject Selections are required to be completed by 31 August 2023.

SBYHN Year 8 Student Health Promotions 

The Year 8 health sessions presented by the School Based Youth Health Nurses will be held on the 31/8 and 7/9 during various core classes. 

The lesson objectives for the year 8 Health Promotion are as follows: 

Young people will gain knowledge to:   

  1. Understand the definition of consent at an age-appropriate level and how red flags like pressure, manipulation and control can affect relationships and consent.  
  2. Learn what boundaries are, how they are communicated and how they relate to consent
  3. Learn skills and strategies that will assistthe young person to assertively communicate boundaries and consent
  4. Be able to identifywhere to seek help and advice around consent, communicationand relationships.

 

Year 7 Debating Champions 

Year 7 are Gold Coast Debate Champions! 

Last term, a number of Academic Excellence students across Year 7 and 8 competed in the Gold Coast Schools Debating Competition.  PBC 4 were successful in Winning the Year 7 competition against 42 other teams from schools across the entire Gold Coast.  In the final, Abbie, Takai, Erica and Taylor successfully argued that “Community Service should not be Compulsory for High School Students” in a short preparation Debate. Congratulations to all the debaters who learnt new skills, improved their speaking skills and had so much fun. The team will now attend a presentation ceremony at Bond University.

 

Duke of Edinburgh Award 

Palm Beach Currumbin High School is an Award Centre that has obtained an operating authority licence to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh International Award to participants. 

To achieve an award in Duke of Edinburgh, each young person must learn a skill, improve their physical wellbeing, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. All participants are supported by the PBC DUKE team. 

The key elements of our program are: 

  • Open to years 9-12.
  • Three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold
  • Four Sections: Physical Recreation, Skills, Voluntary Service, Adventurous Journey plus Gold Residential Project (Gold Level only).
  • Achieving an Award recognises individual goal setting and self-improvement through persistence and achievement.
  • Time requirements:
  • Bronze – minimum 6 months (1 QCE point) $174.25
  • Silver – minimum 6 months if completed Bronze otherwise 12 months for direct entrants (1 QCE point) $179.40
  • Gold – minimum 12 months if completed Silver otherwise 18 months for direct entrants (2 QCE points) $184.50

 

This program looks to recognise the efforts students are already making in developing themselves into the best self they can be.
