Dear Parents/Cargivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpgAs term 3 comes to a close this week, the school does not slow down.  Monday night will see Senior Music Excellence students perform and our Touch Football students have their high level championships later in the week. Many senior students have finished their exams, Year 11 has exams this week and the junior secondary students are busy with assignment work and their exams.

Term 4 commences on Tuesday 8 October with Unit 3 starting (first of the summative units) for Year 11 students. Year 12s prepare for their end of year exams, formal and graduation. It is awards season with the school having seventeen night award / presentation / performance functions across the first six weeks of Term 4. The primary school students in Year 6 commence their transition activities into the school.

The GCCC have completed their road and footpath widening works on Thrower Drive. The GCCC have done a great job in managing the projects around school peak busy times and have been very consultative about the works schedule and logistics as they have completed the project. The Council were also responsive in installing disabled parking out the front of the school. Whilst highlighting traffic improvements in the area, Cr Daphne McDonald has written to the school to explain that our request for pedestrian crossing on Thrower Drive (Salk Oval) to be replaced with traffic lights has been escalated to the Federal Blackspot Funding Program.

With holidays commencing on the weekend I would like to wish all our students, parents and staff who volunteer their time as Surf Lifesavers all the best and for a quiet start to the season.

Regards,

Chris Capra
Executive Principal

The introductory session will commence on Tuesday 8 October (Period 2). Beginning Wednesday 9 October (8.00–8.45am), students will rotate through a variety of learning sessions focusing on goal setting, time-management, self-efficacy, health and assessment preparation. Like the QCS Program of previous years, students attending the ‘PBC Steps to Success Program’ will not need to attend sport classes of a Wednesday afternoon.  For further information, including a program description and timetable please follow the ‘Year 12 PBC Steps to Success’ webpage link.

Senior Schooling

  • Year 10 and 12 students have completed their assessment and have actively commenced Term 4 work. Students need to ensure that they are attending up to and including Friday 20 September.
  • Shutdown commences for Year 11 students this week from 10 Monday 16 September to Friday 20 September.
  • The Year 11 exam timetable has been published for students on the student drive at school and is also available on the school website under curriculum/testing and assessment (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment) Please ensure that your student has checked this and knows the date, time and room of all their exams.
  • Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of 25 to 29 November .
  • In 2020 Year 12 and Year 10 students will have their exams and assessment due in the last week of each term (Week 10).
  • A reminder that all Year 11 students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete a VET certificate that meets the requirements of the QCE. This course will have a cost of $250.

Assessment Policy

Students are reminded that they must apply for an extension or change of date with the relevant Head of Department if they are going to miss assessment. They will not be allowed to sit an exam before the rest of the cohort. Going on holidays before the end of term does not constitute a valid reason for an extension/change of assessment date. Please refer to the school assessment policy on the school website for more information and for copies of the application for extension and Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments form ( https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment ).

All 11 and 12 students are again reminded that they are expected to be passing at least 5 of their 6 classes to demonstrate that they are “actively engaged in learning “at school. Students must remain QCE eligible to stay enrolled; as such all students should be busy revising, studying and completing assessment tasks at the moment.

Sonia Shreeve - Industry Liaison Officer

We are once again coming to the end of the Academic term with holidays fast approaching! With assessment schedules in full swing and students becoming tired and fatigued it’s important for parents and carers to remain committed to supporting their child right through until Friday 20 September.

Parents, families, and carers are a child's first and most important teachers. Parent engagement in education is about parents and carers, schools and communities working together to ensure that every parent can play a positive role in their child's learning, school community, sport, and social life. Parents and families play a significant role in supporting their child's education. Research has shown that when schools and families work together, children do better, stay in school longer, are more engaged with their school work, go to school more regularly, behave better, and have better social skills. Parent engagement also results in longer term economic, social and emotional benefits.

Thank you to all our PBC families, parents and carers for your support of your child throughout Term 3, we look forward to working with you in Term 4.

Naplan Results

Students' NAPLAN results have been received by the school and were mailed home during Week 9. Should you not have received yours by the end of Week 10, please contact the Middle School Office.

Year 9 Work Experience Update

Congratulations to those Year 9 students who have shown initiative and perseverance in organising their Term 4 Work Experience in a timely manner.

Students should connect with a local business or organisation to complete work experience 9-13December. Students must collect the form from the Middle School Office and return them as soon as possible, so that the formal agreements can be processed.

Should your child need further information, they should see Mrs Hillcoat at the Middle School Office.

Student Leadership

The House Leaders and the Head of Dept. Middle School are currently reviewing applications for candidates for Middle School Student Leadership 2020 positions. The calibre of young people attending PBC was reflected in the fine way in which these young people put their names forward. Interviews will be conducted and final selections will be made shortly after that. Thank you to parents who are supporting their children through this process.

Meeting Academic Commitments

The end of term is nearly with us, and students are anticipating their well-earned breaks.

A reminder once again that students are expected to attend school up to and including Friday 20 September. The holidays extend for a fortnight, with school returning on Tuesday 8 October. A reminder that students who have not met their academic commitments by completing all assessment at the end of term will be required to do so on the first day back.

Middle School Term 3 reports will be emailed home on Friday 20 September. These are interim reports, meaning that they provide an indication of your child’s academic achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject, without comments. Should you have particular concerns, do contact your child’s teacher directly, using the email address on the PBC website.

Learning about money starts at home

PBC is proud to announce our new partnership with Ken Swan and The Wealth Academy.

Australia’s Financial Literacy Framework has four dimensions of consumer and financial literacy. Knowledge and understanding is one of these dimensions. Knowledge and understanding is about the nature and forms of money, how it is used and the consequences of consumer decisions. While this dimension will be taught formally in schools through the Australian Curriculum, this learning should start and be reinforced at home.

Ideally, it is at home where children first begin to develop their knowledge and understanding about money, when they see mum and dad using ‘real’ and ‘plastic’ money when shopping for groceries, paying bills etc.

Although many children see parents spend money, they often do not know the thinking, or hear the conversations, related to that spending decision. It is important for children to hear parents talk about financial decision-making — the choices, the sacrifices, the budgeting, the planning and saving. When children repeatedly hear such conversations they begin to develop and understand how and why money is being used in a certain way within the family.

Financial education is important at home, in school and in the community.

The Langer Cup Winners

Recently the Senior Rugby League boys (Year 12-10) were lucky enough to be visited by the Brisbane Broncos to present the Alan Langer Trophy for winning the South East QLD Championship earlier in the year. Paul Dwyer and Red Alumni Darius Boyd not only presented the trophy to captains Toby Sexton and Jed Edwards but delivered an inspiring message to the boys about “Success in Life” not just on the footy field. Darius was particularly honest and heartfelt as he told of his own journey from PBC to the NRL and some of the personal challenges that he has had to overcome along the way. He was also adamant that his time as a RED were some of his most cherished, and that you need to enjoy every moment you are here.

The importance of Health (Physical and Mental), Character, and Drive to succeed were reinforced in order to live a fulfilled life and that happiness was not always a guaranteed regular event. That is why developing resilience and coping skills are so essential and why sport has so many great life lessons within it. The boys were captivated listeners, and in the conversations that followed over the next week, the common theme was they were “Proud to be Red” and would always look back fondly on the mateship and culture of their time here.

Squash Success

Congratulations to PBC's Shona Coxsedge who was selected to be part of the U15 Qld Squash team in May this year. The Qld team recently traveled to New Zealand to play against NSW and NZ in the Trans Tasman Challenge over 4 full days of competition. After the first few days of competition Australian teams were picked and Shona was selected to be in the U15 Australian team! The Australian Team then played a test match against a very strong NZ team. Unfortunately for the Australians, NZ came out on top for the 8th year in a row. Over the entire competition Shona only lost one match which is a fantastic result. Well done Shona!

Yearbook 2019!

The PBC Optima Yearbook 2019 is currently being layed out ready for printing. This magazine is a wonderful way for all PBC students to remember 2019 at PBC.

If you would like a Yearbook for your family there is still time to place your order. Below is the order form. Simply complete it and hand in at Student Services before Friday 18 October to guarantee yourself a copy. There will be some extras printed but only a limited number so you are best to pre-order to ensure you receive one. Daffodil Day Wrap Up

The final tally has been put together and if you didn't already see on the PBC Instagram page, we raised a total of $3,350 for the Cancer Council from Daffodil Day. A big thanks to everyone who brought in a dollar, bought a raffle ticket, sausage sizzle or a cupcake and an even bigger thank you to everyone that helped out on the day. To the Student Council who helped sell raffle tickets, the students who helped sell cupcakes, and the teachers that baked them; to the performers who drew the crowds in, and the LEOs who sold sausage sizzles and solos to the staff...thank you, we couldn't have done it without you.

News from our Partners

A message from the School Physio, Inspire Physiotherapy

Inspire_Physio.jpgAs a physio one of the most common questions I get asked is: what is better to apply following an injury, ice or heat?

Since the 1970's, most health professionals lived by the RICER acronym when managing soft tissue injuries, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Refer. This narrative has recently been challenged with many health professionals believing ice may actually be detrimental to healing. So with all this information (and misinformation) out there what is Mum or Dad supposed to do when their child comes home with a sore shoulder etc?

The good news is you most likely not going to do any further damage to the injury whether you apply ice or heat and both can reduce pain significantly. There is no strong evidence to support doing either over doing nothing, there is also no evidence to suggest doing either will delay healing or make the problem worse. My advice is to do what feels best. In my experience working with athletes is that ice tends to help pain and reduce swelling quicker in peripheral joints (shoulders, knees, ankles, wrists etc) while people tend to get more relief from heat with back and neck injuries. Bear in mind that everyone is different.

You can read more about ice and heat and how they effect the body in more detail on my blog.

TAKEAWAYS

  1. Ice reduces blood flow and swelling to an injured area and reduces pain
  2. Heat increases blood flow to an injured area an reduces muscle spasm
  3. Early movement promotes faster and more effective healing in absence of significant trauma
  4. The research on the effectiveness of ice and heat on recovery from injury is inconclusive
  5. I find heat works best for backs and necks
  6. I find ice works best for peripheral joints (shoulders, knees, ankles etc)
  7. Do what makes it feel better!

If your child is struggling with a soft tissue injury you can access our FREE Injury Clinic on Monday afternoons (3:00-6:00pm). This free clinic is accessible to all PBC students. Click here to book an appointment online or call/text Matt on 0400 163 609.

The clinic is located at the school tennis courts. Parents and friends are welcome to book appointments for a standard $78.00 fee

Rotary Youth Transition Seminar

Personal Development Opportunity for 16-18 year olds

Rotary District 9640 is currently seeking Awardees to attend the 2019 RYTS Camp. The Camp will run from 17-22 November 2019 at Camp Bornhoffen PCYC, Natural Bridge QLD.

What is RYTS and who is it run by ?

RYTS is a 6 day personal development and leadership program aimed at developing the interpersonal and professional skills of young adults. It is designed for young people aged from 16-18 years old leaving school at the end of the year or to those seeking personal or leadership development. It involves fun activities, inspirational talks and practical workshops.

The program is run by Rotarians and a team of volunteers most of whom have attended previous programs themselves. All of those involved in running the program hold both a Queensland Blue Card and New South Wales Working with Children Check.

The program costs $590 per awardee. All potential attendees need to be endorsed by a local Club who may be able to pay some (e.g. 50%) or all of this cost - the rest will be up to the student. Students will agree with their endorsing club on the amount of sponsorship provided (if any). Clubs also have access, in limited circumstances, to funds for students in disadvantaged situations should they not be able to provide the whole cost themselves.

Where can I get more information ?

See the attached brochure that outlines the key details of the program. You can also visit the RYTS website at https://rotary9640.org/page/ryts to find out more - this will also allow students access to the application form.

Finally, if you would like any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at ryts9640@gmail.com or call the program Chair, Gareth Hunt on 0414 408 299.

Palm Beach Promotions Inc is proud to present the first ever Palmy Fest - a brand new event for the Palm Beach community on Sunday 22 September 2019 at Rotary Park, Palm Beach from 10:30am to 5:00pm.

It's all about live music, food and fun, with free entry and plenty to keep all ages entertained. Bring a picnic blanket and sit back as some of the best live local acts hit the stage, including Electrik Lemonade, Hussy Hicks and The Brothers Calling.

Grab a bite to eat from the food trucks and browse the stalls, then soak up the jungle vibes in the special zone just for kids - Jungle Lane! There will be reptiles, jungle craft, animal farm, circus workshops and so much more for little explorers, plus a visit throughout the day from the Gold Coast SUNS mascots, Sunny Ray and Skye.

Gather your family and friends and don't miss this spectacular Sunday in our local community, celebrating everything there is to love about living in Palm Beach.
