Thankyou to all Senior Students for a settled start to Term 2, despite the interruptions of ANZAC and Labour Days. It was once again a privilege to pause with our school community and acknowledge our ANZACs at both our school and wider-community ceremonies. A hearty thankyou to our Student Leaders for running our school commemorations and all students for their conduct and respect of this occasion.
For all who would like to re-live the Dawn Service ANZAC Speech delivered by our School Captains, Keeley Parker and Sean Lunney at Elephant Rock, please follow this link - https://youtu.be/EF-kZX9ePPI
Both Keeley and Sean are to be warmly congratulated, they represented themselves, their generation and our community with valour in what can be a nerve-wracking experience. We are so proud to have them represent PBC.
Report Cards
All Year 10 and Year 12 students have now received their first report card for 2023. For Year 10's this marks the first checkpoint and feedback opportunity in Senior School. Year 10's have been briefed on the importance of Term 2 results, as Semester 1 report cards will dictate which study pathways and subjects all students can select as part of their Year 11 studies (SET Plan process).
Year 12 students have received their Unit 3 report cards. This is their 2nd last report of their schooling. Year 12 students can expect to have both ATAR mentoring and performance mentoring conversations with senior teachers, and in some instances parents in the coming weeks.
Year 12 Graduation Ceremony & Formal Dinner
Communications regarding the upcoming Year 12 Graduation Ceremony & Formal Dinner, to be held at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre on Friday 17 November 2023 were sent home this week. Please contact Senior Secondary for any further information regarding this landmark event.
Year 11
Year 11 students are busy preparing for exams commencing in week 5, 15 May and finalizing Unit 1 assessment. The exam timetable has been published on the school website under curriculum-testing and assessment.
Subject changes for Year 11 students will open at the end of Unit 1 (19 May).
Griffith University On-Campus Experience Day
On the last GC6 day a group of Year 11 and 12 students visited Griffith University Gold Coast for an on campus experience day. The students were given the opportunity to tour the campus, speak with current students, engage in activities relating to current GU courses and ask as many questions as they wanted regarding applications and courses, clubs and extra-curricular and Uni life in general.
It was a great day where our students again represented our school with pride.
Study skills bite
The Retrieval effect:
Students may see an inability to remember as an obstacle but they should be encouraged to understand that this is an opportunity for learning to take place. The more difficult the retrieval practice, the better it can be for long-term learning. Quick, regular, low-stakes questioning or quizzes that exercise memory, along with practice problems and writing prompts, dramatically improves student learning.
Meningococcal Immunisations for PBC Year 10 students via GC Health
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
PBC, in conjunction with the Gold Coast Public Health Unit, have secured an opportunity for all Year 10 students to take advantage of a free vaccination against meningococcal ACWY. This service will take place at PBC on Tuesday 6 June 2023 for Year 10 students only. The immunisations are delivered by the Gold Coast Public Health immunisation team.
You should soon be receiving an email directly from GC Health, to the email address you have nominated with the school (ensure to check your junk mail folder also). Please complete this form online to ensure your student gains permission to receive this immunisation. Qld Health officials will not accept verbal consent this year and only accept those students who register online.
If you haven’t received this email or would like some further information regarding the program you can contact the Gold Coast Public Health’s immunisation team on:
- Call: 1800 940 750
- Email: immuniseGC@health.qld.gov.au
- or visit goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au/our-services/immunisation.
The immunisations will commence at 9am and the students will receive information about when to leave class to attend, closer to the day. It is advised that the students have breakfast prior to having the immunisation.

Engagement
Each month parents receive an email showing them how their child's attendance is tracking. Our biggest concern at the moment is supporting students who’s attendance has dropped below 85% as often these students are needing additional support to catch up or may be disengaging from school for different reasons. As a parent or guardian if you have concerns about how connected your child is with their school life please reach out to someone on staff about this concern.
CRICOS Provider Name: The Queensland Department of Education trading as Education Queensland International (EQI) CRICOS Provider Number 00608A
Over the last couple of years the HPE faculty has expanded by offering all year elective subjects for Year 9 students. We currently offer three such electives - Advanced Physical Education, Health and Wellbeing, Outdoor and Adventure Education. An opportunity we have within these subjects is to expose students to real life learning experiences through connection with local experts.
The Outdoor and Adventure Education students recently learned how to fillet and cook a fish they had caught themselves. The students learned how to cast a line, bait a hook, and reel in a fish. Once they had caught a fish, they were shown how to clean it and cook it. The students were surprised at how easy it was to fillet a fish, and they enjoyed eating the fish they had caught themselves. The outdoor and adventure education program is designed to teach students about the natural world and how to interact with it in a sustainable way. The program also helps students develop important skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.
The Advanced Physical Education students experienced an interactive lecture from a local sports spychologist who discussed the importance of mental toughness in sports. She spoke about the different factors that contribute to mental toughness, such as self-confidence, goal setting, and coping with adversity. She also provided practical tips on how the students could manage their own mental state. The students were challenged to apply these strategies in a simulated high pressure performance environment of competitive card house building.
The Health and Wellbeing students will experience a high ropes challenge later this term. This challenge requires the students to put into action the strategies they have learned to control their attention, motivation and anxiousness.
The teachers involved enjoy providing these opportunities to the students and enhancing learning for real world application.
Shane Roberts
Head of Department (Health and Physical Education)
In Term 1, the Year 7 students explored the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizenship. They investigated our system of government, including the process of constitutional change via a referendum. To immerse the students in a real-world example, the unit culminated in a 'Referendum Day' that took place in Week 10.
In the lead up to the event, the students researched the possibility of changing the PBC Uniform policy - Blues Vs Reds. Each student selected a stance on the issue and sought feedback from sectors of our local school community including teachers, students, parents and members of our Administration team. After a number of successful campaigns, persuasive speeches, survey/poll results, protests and the development of highly effective marketing tools - we went to a vote.
Each core Year 7 class was required to register at the voting stations, before submitting their vote. We had a number of voting representatives helping to maintain order in the voting room, along with registration tables (for students and staff), festive music and of course a BBQ for voters to pick up their referendum sausages. Out of 292 students and teachers the result was decided: 114 votes for a Red uniform; 167 voted for the formal blues uniform. The winner - Blues!
It was a fabulous day that was full of fun, freedom of speech, food and the students were able to experience a real-life example of sharing one's voice in a democratic nation.
Australia is a strong democracy that allows freedom of speech and association. To protect our freedoms and way of life, we use an electoral system that gives Australian citizens an equal vote in choosing who will govern our country. It is through understanding this system of government that allows us to be informed and active citizens. We can have our say in who will represent our communities and what laws will support our way of life. To have the honour of representing the people of Australia, candidates must campaign to gain support from voters.

One of the benefits of attending science club regularly is the opportunity to participate in further extra-curricular activities. This term’s theme is the marine environment, so ‘clubbers’ participated in a marine experience provided by Ocean Stars Marine Education. The science club incursion provided an opportunity for students to explore the deep sea through virtual reality. Equipped with VR headsets, students were able to dive into the layers of the ocean, from the sunlight zone to the abyss, and observe the organisms living there, gaining knowledge on how they have adapted to survive. After this guided journey, students were free to embark on their own VR adventures and interact with ocean creatures. Some students chose to venture to the Bahamas to dive with hammerhead sharks, experiencing the thrill of getting too close to the sharks as they bit down on the camera. The students were fully immersed in the experience, some even attempting to swim in the classroom. Through this interactive learning experience, students shared their prior knowledge and absorbed new information.

Well done Jarrah! https://bit.ly/3B1wRML
Jarrah's Poem...
Yeah, I’m Aboriginal! I state, but a boy on the lunch table giggles. It’s silent, but then he decides to be brave and speak. ‘You’re not Aboriginal, look at yourself, I mean you’re white, can’t you see, you’re so delusional, you are literally about as white as me’.
But still, I rise
The second time –
You’re sitting in math class doing your schoolwork and a girl in the back corner suddenly says loudly, ‘So you’re ‘aboriginal’, are you completely sure?, your skin colour is white, and if you are, stop acting like your ancestors fought a massive war.’
But still, I rise
The eighth time –
Your 16-year-old self is at work and a customer questions your name, ‘Oh it has native origin, I’m indigenous’ I exclaim. Their face said it all, the frown, the squinted eye, them trying to hide their laughter, while I am about to cry.
But still, I rise
If an adult doesn’t understand, is their truly any hope?
How will the future children of this country be educated?
How will younger ones who are just like me be able to cope?
Now sometimes if I’m really lucky I’ll get the, ‘You’re not a real one, what are you whinging for? you’re only part!’
What part then? My hand? My foot? My Arm?
You’re either black or you aren’t
Coffee is still coffee no matter how much milk is in it
You still don’t believe me though, right?
You wanna do a DNA test?
Come suck my blood
Drain the life out of me
My complexion may be white, but that same DNA you’re talking about has got red, black and yellow overpowering all that the doctors can see
Is this what you want me to look like
Is this what you really want to see
Me having to paint my face so you can believe me
Me having to paint me face so you give respect to me
Do you want to see cultural dances?
Do you want to see what I’ve learnt?
Do you want to see me thriving?
Or do you just want to see me hurt?
Why do you have so much hatred?
I’m exhausted
I’m hurting
I’m damaged beyond repair
From your words that has a past rooted in pain
You may shoot me with your speech, but it is a bullet that I will gain
And still, I rise
Is it my confidence that upsets you?
Is that why you try and tear me down?
Because my skin isn’t the colour of ‘dirt’ you say
Darling you can try, but you’ll never take my crown
You can write it on the roof tops
But you will never break me with your corrupt lies
I can see that I’m of pale skin
But just like my adrenaline, I’ll rise
Does my attitude offend you?
Does it really hit to your heart?
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got a whale skeleton museum
Getting dug up in my backyard
‘How do we get to move forward if we dwell on the past?’
Well, that’s just your privilege
‘We didn’t do it to you’
Well, that’s just your privilege
‘Can’t we just ignore the pain that’s been caused’
Well, that just your privilege
The skin colour I was born with, diluted down from generations is just my privilege
Because I see the way my brother gets treated because of his darker skin
The names he gets called, the assumptions and phrases
But we have the same parents, believe it or not, we are fully related
It just blows my mind how a few different genes changes the way we are treated on a day-to-day basis
If an adult doesn’t understand, is their truly any hope?
How will the future children of this country be educated?
How will younger ones who are just like me be able to cope?
Racism is not born, its taught and it’s learned
It’s shown, it’s created, it’s believed in and it’s yearned
It’s read, it’s history, but it’s also the present
It’s the way people live by, indigenous people are a transgression
White supremacy within this country is subtle, but it’s the soil, the grass, the cement, and the red, white and blue flag that flutters outside your house
Now, imagine that you are forced to leave and retire from your own game
Cause your own ‘fans’ simply can’t be tamed from their racism
I mean look at what happened to Adam Goodes
Who’s next to leave their sport huh?
Latrell Mitchell?
Josh Addo-Carr?
Tell me!
And when you’re talking about equality do you really mean it?
And when you are marching for us, and sticking up for us are you doing it for our freedom, or just when it’s convenient?
And the girl in my math class
You can tell she doesn’t understand
Or the older boy from the canteen line
Or the kid from the school’s music band
They don’t understand that their anti-black racism runs in the DNA of this country
They don’t understand the severity of why there is still that standing gumtree
They don’t understand what it’s like to have your babies ripped away from them
Or what it’s like to be told to stop getting so many benefits out of the government
They don’t understand the prejudice, the culture, or the pain
The fact that I am told to stop using up the school’s indigenous help and resources for my own personal gain
They don’t comprehend that my ancestors were locked in small jails, starved and beaten
Or to know what it was like to fight for a say or just to have basic freedom
They don’t understand that the land they are standing on has history
Or the fact that Australian colonisation was not just a temporary injury
Although it may seem it, these kids are not to blame for their ‘hatred’, it is not too hard to see that they are simply just uneducated.
Still, I rise

Congratulations to PBC Leos, Ethan Campbell and Emma Suttle who went to the Community Achiever Award Ceremony where they accepted awards for their dedication to community service.
On Friday 1 May, our PBC Leos club had the privilege of attending the 75th Lions Club Multiple District 201 Conference held at The Star Casino in Broadbeach. This annual event is a very prestigious one with guests from Lions Clubs all across Australia and Internationally to formulate policy for the next year with a view to continuing the amazing and important work they do. It was attended by local and federal politicians and dignitaries. Leos played an important role in opening the proceedings by performing in the flag bearing ceremony - this symbolises the worldwide nature of the Lions movement. They did PBC and Leos proud - worthy successors to Lions present!

On Monday 24 April 2023, PBC students, staff and community honoured the ANZAC tradition in a moving ceremony, which commenced with Mr Mark Simpson playing the bagpipes as he led our entourage of special guests onto the stage arena.
Our special guests included The Hon Karen Andrews MP, Mr Michael Hart MP, Cr Gail O’Neill, Mr Michael Humphreys President of the Currumbin RSL, Acting Senior Sgt Megan Beer and Mrs Kaylee Campradt, our P&C President. We were also privileged to have veterans, war widows, and representatives from the Lions, Rotary and Legacy Clubs.
PBC’s cadets started the parade, forming an honour guard, for the proceedings.
Our Year 12 leaders compered beautifully, educating our students on the meaning of ANZAC Day as a time to remember the anguish of war, to build bridges and to recognise the character of the soldiers, nurses, personnel and their families, who displayed great character and courage in the face of adversity.
The PBC orchestra, conducted by Mrs Kayla Latter and Mr Justin Hart, performed a moving piece called “Simple Song”, leading into laying of wreaths by special guests, staff and students.
PBC thanks Mr Michael Humphreys for speaking to the students about the strength of character, bravery and fortitude required by those who have and continue to serve. Special thanks is also extended to Sergeant Jordan, travelling from Melbourne, to speak to the students about his career serving, along with the challenges of returning to society after many tours overseas. Robert’s speech was honest, revealing the difficulties of service still felt by Australian soldiers today.
Student musician, Griffin Light-Law, performed the Last Post and Reveille, supported by a Piping Lament by Mr Simpson. Thank you to Rubi Nasorowale and Jaide Parks for their anthem renditions.
The success of PBC’s ANZAC Ceremony is a result of the dedication of large cast of staff and students. Thank you to all those people for their commitment, especially our Administrative Officer Lyn Bortolin.
PBC was proud to be represented by our School Captains, Keeley Parker and Sean Lunney at the Currumbin Dawn Service on ANZAC Day. Both Keeley and Sean were chosen to speak on behalf of their generation, reflecting on the legacy of our ANZACs and the responsibility the youth of today hold in ensuring their legacy continues to live on.
Televised nationally on Sunrise, Keeley and Sean spoke with grace and dignity and we are privileged to have them represent our school.
Special thanks to DP Mr Mitch Kennedy and our School Captains, Keeley Parker and Sean Lunney, for their heartfelt speech at the Dawn Ceremony at Elephant Rock. It was also wonderful to see all the staff and students who represented PBC at the mid-morning Currumbin march.
The ANZAC spirit continues to inspire shape who we are as a PBC community.

Bushwalking
Hiking students braved rain and spectacular cascading waterfalls to complete the Twin Falls Circuit at Springbrook. As teachers we were impressed by their awesome attitudes as they negotiated mud and puddles with lots of laughter. We spotted a bright blue Lamington Crayfish and found a cute runaway dog.
Basketball
During the last cluster sports day, PBC Sport Excellence Basketball students were exposed to the high-level USA coaching style. Coach Andre Chevalier spent time with out students going through many different aspects of the game. Andre currently coaches the high school team at Sierra Canyon with elite players such as Bronny James, LeBron James’s son. He was outstanding with his depth of knowledge and the way he interacted with the players. PBC coaches were also lucky enough to spend some 1-on-1 time with Coach Andre, developing their abilities and skills as coaches. Many of our students said that it was eye opening and they learnt a tremendous amount from Andre.

Hopefully this is only the start of a long career in the game. Congratulations Keano you are now PBC’s NRL RED #54.

More about our speakers...
The Seaton’s: When our eldest child had appendicitis and was in the old Southport hospital 16yrs ago there was an abandoned baby who had multiple heath issues. When the Red Cross lady told me he had been birthed and left I asked what will happen to him. She said he will be made Ward of the state. I asked what does that mean and she said he would be fostered out. That night I can home and said to Stuart the story, and I wanted to help babies like this. We had 4 of our own, and I was at home so we decided to do the course, and January 2009 we received our first placement, a premmie baby, and the following 90 plus children have been through our home for the next 14.5years. We have adopted our long term placement who we got at 6 days, he is now 9.5.
Nick Marshall: Sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapist, Assistant Professor Nick Marshall, has a passion for ensuring those with special needs and disability are included in the community. In 2015, Nick created the Albatross Nippers; an all-inclusive junior lifesaving program at Nobbys Beach on the Gold Coast, which helps children with special needs experience nippers with other children of similar ages. Growing year on year, the Albatross Nippers program currently has more than 100 families with special needs children and young adults as registered participants.
Em Carey: Emma Carey is an artist, speaker and aspiring writer from Canberra. After following her love for travel and adventure around the world, she found herself in Switzerland where an unexpected near-death experience completely altered her life. Following the turbulence and transformation of her accident, she has been on a mission to share her unique story in hopes to inspire and enhance the lives of those around her. Her book is called ‘The girl who fell from the sky’.
