In Term 1, the Year 7 students explored the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizenship. They investigated our system of government, including the process of constitutional change via a referendum. To immerse the students in a real-world example, the unit culminated in a 'Referendum Day' that took place in Week 10.

In the lead up to the event, the students researched the possibility of changing the PBC Uniform policy - Blues Vs Reds. Each student selected a stance on the issue and sought feedback from sectors of our local school community including teachers, students, parents and members of our Administration team. After a number of successful campaigns, persuasive speeches, survey/poll results, protests and the development of highly effective marketing tools - we went to a vote.

Each core Year 7 class was required to register at the voting stations, before submitting their vote. We had a number of voting representatives helping to maintain order in the voting room, along with registration tables (for students and staff), festive music and of course a BBQ for voters to pick up their referendum sausages. Out of 292 students and teachers the result was decided: 114 votes for a Red uniform; 167 voted for the formal blues uniform.  The winner - Blues!

It was a fabulous day that was full of fun, freedom of speech, food and the students were able to experience a real-life example of sharing one's voice in a democratic nation.

Australia is a strong democracy that allows freedom of speech and association. To protect our freedoms and way of life, we use an electoral system that gives Australian citizens an equal vote in choosing who will govern our country.  It is through understanding this system of government that allows us to be informed and active citizens.  We can have our say in who will represent our communities and what laws will support our way of life.  To have the honour of representing the people of Australia, candidates must campaign to gain support from voters.
