Dear Parent, Caregiver,

Capra_Chris.jpg

Online Services Consent Survey – Year 7 & 10

Our school uses tools and resources to support student learning, including third party (non-departmental) online services hosted and managed outside of the Department of Education network.

This week, you will be receiving an email from surveys@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au to inform you about the third party online services used in our school and how your child’s information, including some personal information and works, may be recorded, used, disclosed, and published to the services.

Please do not ignore this email and complete the survey at your earliest convenience. Not completing this survey will delay your young person’s access to crucial online services that support their learning in the school.

This email will contain the personal information you need to complete the survey and to ensure the email is not a scam:

  • Student name

  • Login ID

  • Access Code

  • Link to the survey

If you have not received a survey invitation email by Friday, 3 March:

In some instances email systems place the online consent survey email into a spam or junk folder. Furthermore, the email is automatically sent to the parent who is the enrolling parent.

The survey can only be completed once per student.

Next Step Survey

Our recently graduated (Year 12 2022) students will be invited to participate in the Next Step Year 12 Completers survey between March and June 2023.

Next Step is a statewide post-school destination survey of all students who complete Year 12 in Queensland. Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to improve their services for senior students and improve students’ transition from school to further study and employment.

Further information about Next Step is available at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/.

Week 10 new units will commence

Week 10 will be a normal school week and as such we would ask families to plan for their child to be in attendance as classes will be starting new work.

Term 1 Reports

Student Term 1 Interim reports will be emailed home on 26 April.

Term 1 reports are interim reports. This means that they will indicate a child’s Term 1 achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject.

Please ensure that the email address we have recorded for you is current to ensure you receive your child’s report.

We encourage you to follow up on this report by attending Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 2. Information about how to book Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent with reports.

NAPLAN Update

PBC is once again preparing for NAPLAN - the only national assessment all Australian students have the chance to undertake. All students participated in a rehearsal on 23 February, so we could check our systems and familarise the students with their NAPLAN rooms.

As students progress through their school years, it’s important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents and caregivers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time.

Online NAPLAN 'adaptive’ testing presents questions which may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely.

NAPLAN is for everyone. Adjustments are available for students with disabilities who have diverse functional abilities and needs. If your child needs an adjustment, contact HOD Inclusive Practice Jane Bell.

Should you wish your child to be withdrawn from NAPLAN testing, please contact the Junior Secondary administration so that a form can be provided to you. This form should be returned to the school by 10 March.

NAPLAN tests will be conducted on 15, 20, 21 and 22 March. The tests last one period each; all other lessons will run as timetabled on these days.

Thank you to all of our Year 11 and 12 students who recently participated our Growing Good Humans Gala Days. These days allow us to come together as cohorts to engage with and drive our flagship wellbeing programs such as Growing Good Men and Women. We were also blessed to welcome the Good Humans Factory, Tommy Herschell from Find Your Feet, YouChoose Driver Awareness and our Queensland Health Nurses into school to deliver engaging, informative and hopefully inspiring programs to our students.

A big thank you to our students for engaging in a mature and progressive manner with these programs, as well as to our Heads of Year, HOD Positive Education Paul Bullpitt and GGW facilitator Anna Wyatt for their dedication, direction and commitment to this program. We look forward to welcoming our Year 10's early in Term 2.

The senior school also congratulates the recent recipients of Optima Awards. It was a pleasure to host the Term 1 Optima Awards that recongnised outstanding achievements from Semester 2, 2022.

Signing in / out of Senior Secondary

Signing in late: Senior Secondary students are expected to be in Care class for a 9:00am start every day. If your student is late for school, eg. has an appointment that cannot be made outside of school hours, please send a written note explaining the reason with your student.

Senior Secondary requests that a note is brought in, rather than a phone call or email. The Senior office is very busy in the mornings and emails/phone calls often do not reach the sign in desk.

Students signing in without a note will be sent to their Head of Year.

Signing out early: Students must bring a note to Y bock before school if they are required to sign out early that day. This note will be approved by their Head of Year, allowing the student to sign out as necessary. Students must sign out through Y block before leaving school grounds.

PBC requests that sign outs are minimised, to ensure that students are not missing out on valuable learning time. A reminder that driving lessons and driving tests must be scheduled outside of school hours.

We thank you for your support on this matter.

Senior Study Skills

Year 11 and 12 Students will be given the opportunity to attend an on-campus experience day at Griffith University early in Term 2. It will occur on a GC6 cluster day so students are not missing classes. Further information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Students can collect permission forms from Y block or contact the Senior Study Skills Coordinator, Deb Kerwick on dphil107@eq.edu.au.

Assessment Calendar and Procedures

Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au. Click on the Curriculum tab and then under Testing and Assessment. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.

The Year 11 exam timetable has also been uploaded on the school website. These exams are scheduled for Wednesday 15 to 17 March. Year 11 students do not have a shutdown this term and are required to attend school every day. Students attend all timetabled classes except when they have a scheduled exam. Students need to ensure that they are appropriately managing their time and do not leave study and assignments to the last minute as they will have numerous assessment items due in Week 7 and 8.

Parents are reminded that exams will be scheduled in Week 10 at the end of each term for Years 10 and 12. The Year 10 and 12 shutdown calendars for Week 10 of this term (29 to 31 March) will be published on the school website in the coming weeks. As per the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines and handbooks, family holidays are not grounds for missing assessments or exams.

All students and parents need to be aware of the Senior Secondary Assessment policy. The policy is published on the school website (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/ ), under the Curriculum /Testing and Assessment tab. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date. Students requiring special provision, now known as an Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA), will need to complete the application, available on the school website, and meet with the Guidance Officer Mr Jones and /or the Inclusive Practices coordinator Mr McManus.

The clouds cleared for Year 7 Integrated Learning students to visit Hinze Dam last Tuesday for an outdoor learning experience in our beautiful hinterland. The excursion complements their studies of the science and geography of water availability in South East Queensland. They learnt about dam construction and capacity, how to test for water quality, catchment management, desalination, recycled water and working with each other in new situations. Thank you to SEQWater for their hospitality and expertise.

Rugby League Excellence

Tonie Carrol Cup

The Rookie Reds boys boarded the Reds Bus and headed to Beenleigh with one goal – to qualify for the Top Tier Broncos Challenge that would see them play the elite schools in Year 7. To do this we needed to win at least 4 of our 6 games, and with only 3 weeks preparation, we were going in a somewhat blind. Little did we know that the searing heat of the day and challenge of some very strong opponents would forge the next generations of Reds

Results

  • Game 1 def Caloundra 38 nil (MoM Jaxon)
  • Game 2 def Wavell 16 -10 (MoM Mason and Brayden)
  • Game 3 def Forrest Lake 30 nil (MoM Stanford)
  • Game 4 def Stretton 28 nil (MoM Mason)
  • Game 5 def Bellbird 32 nil (MoM Brayden)
  • Game 6 def Keebra 16 nil (MoM Rico)

Awards

Best Back – Mason, Best Forward – Brayden

Finishing undefeated and with the best For and Against, the boys were the first PBC team to win the Tonie Carrol Cup since its inception in 2016. This was a great achievement by the boys and they learnt the Reds Song to celebrate. “Everywhere we Go…….”

I am very proud of the boys first up effort and need to extend a Big Thankyou to our Seniors Head Coach Tim Maccan for coming up and assisting with the Rookies, and also to all the families who travelled up to support the boys. What a great start to the year.

You for 2032

youfor2032.jpg

The YouFor2032 initiative is a talent transfer program looking to identify and transfer talented athletes into Olympic sports that have partnered with our program. We are looking for athletes with exceptional capacities that may be interested in transferring to a new sport in which they may excel.

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) is on a mission to systematically unearth and develop Queensland’s most talented athletes and prepare them for success in 2032. Cue Australia’s largest talent identification program – Youfor2032! Youfor2032 stretches right across Queensland, to find athletes with extraordinary elite potential who could achieve medal success in 2032.

QAS talent coaches and advisors will be hosting testing sessions at PBC on Friday May 2nd where they will facilitate physical athletic testing (e.g. agility, sprinting, endurance) as well as nonphysical components. All that is left to do is register! More information to come.

Youfor2032 seeds the dreams of young aspiring athletes. If you are aged between 13-23 (Olympic Sports) or 13-30 (Paralympic Sports) you are eligible. The quest for the best starts now!

Music Excellence

Music Excellence has seen a fantastic start to the year with a myriad of very special experiences for our students. Students are working hard on their first units of the year.  This term, the Junior space invites PBC alumni and a full-time independent musician Zac Hubbard, back into the classroom to offer mentorship, support and rich learning experiences for our students.

Candlelight Concert

Year 8 and 9 Music Excellence students were treated to a candlelight concert in a 100 year old cathedral filled with candles and a stunning performance by a string quartet.  This was an inspiring night for our talented music students to be exposed to such a high calibre of performers and musical arrangements.

Drum Masterclass

It was such an amazing experience to get such a skilled musician to come in for a percussion masterclass. We got to explore quite an extensive range of topics, from brands and quality of drum kits to how to tune different types of drums. Dave Amphlett was such an inspiring person to be taught by, and the level of knowledge he possessed on the instrument was phenomenal. We were even allowed to have a jam on Dave’s kit! Overall, it was a terrific event and I’m so grateful to have been part of it.
Anjali (Music Ex – Year 9)

Composition Workshop

Senior Music General students were provided the opportunity to learn from Senior Lecturer and Head of Jazz from Queensland Conservatorium of Music as part of their course. Dr Steven Newcomb shared insights into his creative process as a composer, unpacking his recently released contemporary piece ‘Pluto and the Sun’. Students gained valuable knowledge around sustaining a career in the music industry and were treated to a number of performance pieces as part of this rich learning experience.

Palm Beach 100 Celebrations

Over the weekend, we had 16 Music Excellence students performing at the Palm Beach Centenary Celebrations. The performers did an outstanding job! Congratulations to everyone and thank you to families for coming along and supporting this community event.

Drama Excellencee

Remy_Photo.jpg

Talented PBC Alumni Remy Heremaia recently returned to The Arts, to share his expertise and knowledge as an Acting student at the prestigious Victorian College of Arts. Remy led intensive classes to both Drama and Drama Excellence students across all year levels.  The junior students revelled in the fun and spontaneity of his workshops.  Year 12 Drama were enlightened by Remy’s insight into their Dramatic Concepts; Year 9 & 10 Drama Excellence explored authenticity in performance; whilst Senior Drama Excellence focused on monologues. The students and staff adore Remy and are so proud of his achievements and humanity.

Visual Arts Excellence

The 8 Art Excellence have started the year by learning about tone and flat lay still life drawing. Students are half way through their first artwork in the program and are already showing exceptional skills. The program is designed so that students explore painting, printmaking and ceramics in their first year.

Year 9 Visual Arts Excellence students are working on a unit that explores materials, techniques, and processes that an artist may use when working.  The exploration is based on portraiture and so far, the experiments have considered types of contour drawing and realistic drawing.  Materials have included oil paints and coloured pencils on a variety of surfaces.  In the coming weeks, the class will put their hand to digital manipulation of portrait photos they have taken.

Year 10 Visual Art Excellence students are currently in the process of creating a Body of Work that explores alternative perspectives of public places. This unit allows students the freedom to explore their personal aesthetic through their art-making. Throughout this unit, students are experimenting with a range of painting and drawing materials and techniques that will allow them to further develop their knowledge of building a resolved Body of Work.

The SEQ Year 12 Regional Leadership Camp will be up there with Term 1 highlights. Day 1 involved an intense touch football battle on the sand with some of the Year 11 students who also accompanied the seniors to our Worksite Visit at SEE Civil. SEE Civil discussed pathways and how to get started in the civil construction industry. The boys were not short of questions and were keen to get started that afternoon. As a group we all put our minds together to complete a pre-start safety checklist which gave a good insight on how important safety is on site. The camp consisted of many workshops, around well-being, goal setting, becoming a leader by following and leading with weaving and much more. To end the camp leadership games where held at the beach to put into practice team work, positive communication, and enjoying each others company in the sun.
