Senior Secondary Update

Thank you to all of our Year 11 and 12 students who recently participated our Growing Good Humans Gala Days. These days allow us to come together as cohorts to engage with and drive our flagship wellbeing programs such as Growing Good Men and Women. We were also blessed to welcome the Good Humans Factory, Tommy Herschell from Find Your Feet, YouChoose Driver Awareness and our Queensland Health Nurses into school to deliver engaging, informative and hopefully inspiring programs to our students.

A big thank you to our students for engaging in a mature and progressive manner with these programs, as well as to our Heads of Year, HOD Positive Education Paul Bullpitt and GGW facilitator Anna Wyatt for their dedication, direction and commitment to this program. We look forward to welcoming our Year 10's early in Term 2.

The senior school also congratulates the recent recipients of Optima Awards. It was a pleasure to host the Term 1 Optima Awards that recongnised outstanding achievements from Semester 2, 2022.

Signing in / out of Senior Secondary

Signing in late: Senior Secondary students are expected to be in Care class for a 9:00am start every day. If your student is late for school, eg. has an appointment that cannot be made outside of school hours, please send a written note explaining the reason with your student.

Senior Secondary requests that a note is brought in, rather than a phone call or email. The Senior office is very busy in the mornings and emails/phone calls often do not reach the sign in desk.

Students signing in without a note will be sent to their Head of Year.

Signing out early: Students must bring a note to Y bock before school if they are required to sign out early that day. This note will be approved by their Head of Year, allowing the student to sign out as necessary. Students must sign out through Y block before leaving school grounds.

PBC requests that sign outs are minimised, to ensure that students are not missing out on valuable learning time. A reminder that driving lessons and driving tests must be scheduled outside of school hours.

We thank you for your support on this matter.

Senior Study Skills

Year 11 and 12 Students will be given the opportunity to attend an on-campus experience day at Griffith University early in Term 2. It will occur on a GC6 cluster day so students are not missing classes. Further information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Students can collect permission forms from Y block or contact the Senior Study Skills Coordinator, Deb Kerwick on dphil107@eq.edu.au.

Assessment Calendar and Procedures

Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au. Click on the Curriculum tab and then under Testing and Assessment. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.

The Year 11 exam timetable has also been uploaded on the school website. These exams are scheduled for Wednesday 15 to 17 March. Year 11 students do not have a shutdown this term and are required to attend school every day. Students attend all timetabled classes except when they have a scheduled exam. Students need to ensure that they are appropriately managing their time and do not leave study and assignments to the last minute as they will have numerous assessment items due in Week 7 and 8.

Parents are reminded that exams will be scheduled in Week 10 at the end of each term for Years 10 and 12. The Year 10 and 12 shutdown calendars for Week 10 of this term (29 to 31 March) will be published on the school website in the coming weeks. As per the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines and handbooks, family holidays are not grounds for missing assessments or exams.

All students and parents need to be aware of the Senior Secondary Assessment policy. The policy is published on the school website (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/ ), under the Curriculum /Testing and Assessment tab. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date. Students requiring special provision, now known as an Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA), will need to complete the application, available on the school website, and meet with the Guidance Officer Mr Jones and /or the Inclusive Practices coordinator Mr McManus.

School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships

PBC prides itself on strong partnerships with our community and is happy to report a number of current openings for Year 10 and Year 11 students to undertake School based Apprenticeships and Traineeships  (SATS). These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, additional QCE points  and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options. Students should come to Y Block an speak with Ms Shreeve about the current opportunities.
