Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Sgalippa_Anita_Copy_.jpg

Last week we commemorated ANZAC Day as a whole school event. This forms one of only three times in the year where we join together as a whole school community in one place. One of our guest speakers commented on how daunting it is to see almost 2500 students gathered in one place let alone the number of staff present. This is a special occasion at PBC and one that is made all the richer by our wonderful Cadets, both Army and Air Force, who have their time in the Honour Guard and assisting with the service. Much planning, well in advance goes into an event like this and I am grateful to Wendy Wise for her leadership and to Lyn Bortolin for her tireless efforts to make sure everything goes smoothly and special guests are looked after.

This year our special guest reflection came from Ian Bullpitt who is related to one of our own staff Paul Bullpitt. Ian served for 15 years but has done much more work since in special projects in several countries especially in relation to landmine recovery. The other highlight aside from the amazing job our senior leaders did hosting the event, was our school band, once again they impressed both students listening and our invited guests. I am sure I am not alone in feeling so proud of the way our students demonstrated their respect to the ANZAC legend and considered soldiers past and present on this day of reflection.

Regards,
Anita Sgalippa

A note from the Principal, Senior School

Good luck Ms Bradford

As I embark on my maternity leave in preparation for my first child I would like to take the opportunity to thank the students and parents of PBC for the wonderful start to the year. 2019 in senior schooling is an extremely significant year, with the introduction of the new SATE system running parallel with our existing OP system. Staff have seamlessly embraced this adjustment and alongside them students have flourished.

As I take the rest of 2019 to focus on priorities of a smaller but undoubtedly more intense kind, I will dearly miss our students, staff and community. It gives me great heart however to be handing over the Senior School reigns to the very capable Mr Peter Hughes who joins us for this period of time from Coombabah SHS.

Until 2020, farewell, may each and every student continue in doing nothing but their best.

Alyce Bradford
Principal Senior School

Welcome Mr Hughes!

I am very excited to be a part of the PBC community. Firstly, I would like to thank both the staff and students for the welcome I have received since my arrival.

It is evident to me from my initial conversations with the community that the focus of decision making is on student wellbeing and outcomes. This is a promising outlook for a school to have and I will continue to endorse it as I am passionate about student achievement.

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all involved in the highly successful ANZAC ceremony held at the school last Thursday. Both staff and students represented our school with pride.

I look forward to being involved in all aspects of the school’s life whether it is academic, sporting or cultural.

Peter Hughes
Acting Principal Senior School

Meningococcal Immunisations – Tuesday 21 May (Week 5)

PBC, in conjunction with the Gold Coast Public Health Service, has secured an opportunity for all Year 10 students to take advantage of a free vaccination against meningococcal ACWY. This service will take place at PBC on Tuesday 21 May 2019 for Year 10 students only. However GC Health are also extending the offer of a free vaccination to all youth aged 15-19 through their immunisation provider or General Practitioner.

Last term Qld Health emailed all Year 10 parents a letter which outlined information about the vaccinations, how to obtain further reading on the topic and most importantly how to register to receive the free vaccinations. Unlike past immunisations held at school in Years 7 & 8, consent for this service must be given by filling in an online form, downloading an interactive PDF form or getting a paper copy from school AND returning it on the day. You will find the link for registration below:

https://www.health.qld.gov.au/gc/html/services/immunisation/2017-school-immunisation-program-consent-form-for-year-10-students

PBC will email a reminder to all Year 10 student’s families in the coming days to ensure you can take advantage of this service – please remember only Year 10’s are eligible to get the immunisation at school.

Please visit:  www.goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au/our-services/immunisation for further information or email them at: admin.immuniseGC@health.qld.gov.au

Year 11

Year 11 Unit 1 Assessment

Year 11 students should be busy revising work and completing assignments for their upcoming assessment. All assessment for Unit 1 should be completed by Tuesday 21 May. The timetable for Year 11 exams will be published shortly on the school website under the curriculum/testing and assessment tab.  There will be no shutdown for these exams and students will be expected to attend school every day. It is vitally important that Year 11s are actively revising and preparing for assessment now as they will have numerous exams and assignments due in the same week.

Certificate II in Tourism and Hospitality

Any year 11 student or non OP Year 12 students wishing to complete this certificate during sport on Wednesday afternoons should see Mr McDougall or Ms McQueen as soon as possible. This course is free for students that have not used their VETis funding.

Year 12

Overall Positions (OPs)

Year 12 OP students will be having their OP prediction interviews in the next few weeks with a member of the Senior Schooling team. The OP prediction will help students plan for their QTAC application for tertiary courses in September.

OP students can maximise their OP by:

  • Improving their rung; e.g. moving from a B5 to a B6
  • Improving their rank position in the subject cohort
  • Improving the QCS test average of OP students in that subject and the OP cohort.

To improve the students Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test performance students have been sitting and receiving feedback from practice tests during shutdown. They also have; a dedicated QCS class at 8:00am Wednesdays and Masterclasses with Mighty Minds. Masterclass have been scheduled for Tuesday 7 May and Tuesday 14 May in the Trade Training Centre from 3:15 to 4:45pm; attendance at these classes is compulsory for OP students unless prior arrangements have been made with senior school admin.

Alternative Pathways

Students who receive a predicted OP higher than 15 may need to consider alternative pathways to Tertiary studies; as they may not gain the required result in their current pathway.

Alternative pathways include moving to Selection Rank, or completing a Certificate III course whilst at school. These pathways are generally a better option for students with OPs above 15 as they will give students an option to attend University in 2020.

Students can also gain tertiary entrance by completing a Certificate III or higher whilst a school. This will give them a Rank of 68 which is equivalent to an OP of 15. The school is currently offering a Certificate III in Business course with an external training organisation (Aurora Training). This course has a fee payable in advance as it is conducted by an external provider. Students whose OP prediction is higher than 15 need to consider this option; as it may secure a tertiary place for them in 2020.

Aurora is also offering a Diploma of Business option on a Wednesday afternoon at their campus in Varsity. This course will take a year to complete and comes at a cost of $1800 but will provide tertiary options for a mid-year intake in 2020.

Please contact the Senior Schooling team or Mr McDougall if you require more information about the above 2 options.

Pathways Centre

Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate III qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway.

ANZAC DAY 2019

Once again, the students of PBC proudly honoured the men and women of Australia and New Zealand who have served their countries in times of war and conflict. Our cadets and school band made notable contributions to our service, held on Wednesday 24 April. See the Principal's Report for entire photo gallery.

IMG_3578_Copy_.JPG

Flight Sergeant Spicer competently led the Honour Guard including both the Air Force and Army Cadets throughout the service. Our special guests shared their thoughts with our school community.

014_Copy_2_.JPG

Mr Ian Bullpitt, one of our special guests, delivered an inspiring message reflecting on his service duties throughout his 15 years in the Australian Army Engineering Corp and working with the United Nations managing the remediation of unexploded munitions in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Cambodia.

Lest we forget.

On 25 April, PBC was proud to be represented by our Middle and Senior School students at the mid-morning march to the Currumbin RSL. The weather was great and the services beautiful. Thank you to all the students that participated on the day. Thank you to Mrs Natalie Hill for making our wreaths.

Our PBC ANZAC biscuits are popular with the Veterans and a special thank you to students involved in the cooking and packaging of the biscuits.

NAPLAN 2019

Year 7s and Year 9s will sit their NAPLAN tests in Week 4. These tests provide our school, parents and students with a snapshot of their progress against national benchmarks, and our teachers with valuable information on how best to support student learning.

The NAPLAN program is as follows:

  • Tuesday 14 May, periods 1 and 2 only. Normal classes periods 3 and 4.
  • Wednesday 15May Period 1 only
  • Thursday 16 May Period 1 only

A ‘catch-up’ day for absent students is on Friday 17 May, to allow students who may have been ill during the week to complete the full program of tests.

All parents of Year 7 and 9 students were sent a letter (as an email attachment) last term concerning NAPLAN and parents of students supported by the Inclusive Practices Department should also have had separate contact from HOD Tammy Burns.

Should you have any concerns about your child sitting NAPLAN, please contact the Head of Department Middle School Sharon Hillcoat as soon as possible (ph: 5525 9340).

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews

If you have not done so already, please take the time to sit with your child and discuss their interim report, emailed at the end of last term. Celebrate successes and where improvements are needed, set some specific, realistic and measurable goals. Should you require clarification or need to immediately discuss your child’s progress, remember that teachers welcome contact from parents; all teachers’ emails are listed under ‘contacts’ on the PBC website.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interview bookings are now open, for interviews in Week 3. The interviews are conducted over several afternoons and evenings, to provide as many opportunities as possible for you to meet with teachers. Guidance Officers and other support staff are also available on these evenings.

Students are encouraged to attend the interviews; it can be very useful for them to ask their own questions and to receive direct feedback from teachers, with you present. Teachers are also hoping to learn more about the student, and will welcome information that will help them support each individual in their learning. We look forward to meeting with you.

World Science Festival

World_Science_Festival_Copy_.jpg

Although the Brisbane World Science Festival may have been back in March, the memories of the day are still with the 40 lucky students who attended the event on Thursday 21 March. World Science Festival has fast become the Asia-Pacific destination for exploring and celebrating the entanglement of science. Now in it’s fourth year, the continued success of this popular event affirms Brisbane as an innovative city with strengths in science, technology, mathematics and engineering. World Science Festival Brisbane brings together world leading scientists; from astrophysicists and Chiefs of Science, to NASA astronauts and national icons, each one offered thought-provoking conversation, brave new ideas and sparked stimulating debate on some of the biggest challenges facing humankind.

For the 40 students with a passion for science, their journey began with a presentation from the National Youth Science Forum: Five Minutes With Your Future. Students were given five minutes to ask questions to Australia’s next generation of upcoming scientists , such as what a future in science looks like. From chemists with an element of surprise, to humorous biologists to electrical engineers with big hertz…hearts, sorry.

After meeting with the volunteer university students, our PBC students split up to get the best of both worlds. While half attended the Pioneers in Science Brisbane with Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, the remainder of the group moved to the Queensland Museum’s Biodiversity Laboratories to attend the Museum Curator’s Apprentice: Terrestrial Biodiversity workshop. In the Museum Curator’s Apprentice, a team of Queensland Museum biologists introduce the new ‘apprentices’ to Queensland’s remarkable biodiversity, with the focus on arachnology. By sharing their scientific expertise and passion for collections, these biologists revealed how old and new technologies have together, dramatically changed the sciences of taxonomy.

Meanwhile at the State Library of Queensland, the remainder of the students were given the rare opportunity to interview a renowned scientist live on stage. During the interview-style discussion, pioneer Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg shed insights into his trailblazing career path, and answered questions from the next generation of STEM professionals. Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is a Professor of Marine Science at the University of Queensland and studies the effects of global warming and ocean acidification on coral reefs. He undertakes game-changing research to find collaborative, high-impact solutions to address several of the most pressing and serious challenges facing humanity worldwide, including climate change, food security, clean energy and population growth.

To end the day off, our PBC students got to catch a rare glimpse of hatching turtles in their incubation chambers and their first moments of life. It was a turtely awesome experience and one to remember. This initiative was designed in collaboration with internationally renowned herpetologist Colin Limpus and Queensland Museum Senior Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians, Biodiversity Program and Chari of the Animal Ethics Committee Patrick Couper.

Being one the world’s most engaging, exciting and educational science events, PBC students were lucky to have been given the amazing opportunity to explore this ever-expanding, global endeavour.

Stem Ambassador Conference

The day started with St. Stephens College informing us of what they do as a school to promote STEM. Their main aspect was their STEM tour where they go from school to school demonstrating a variety of STEM aspects such as hydrogen bubbles.

We then moved onto creating some absolutely terrible ideas. The goal was to improve on a bad idea into a STEM applicable idea. Our very own bad idea was to let the Year 7’s have free roam of a science expedition with access to countless different experiments with no limits or restrictions – how horrible would that be? Another fancy idea was to make a dissolvable straw. We were allocated another group’s idea, which was dropping sodium into a pool. We changed the bad idea into something more applicable within a school environment, where we test different sodium compounds such as sodium carbonate and observing the reaction they would have in water.

Nearing the end of the day we went to the Cremorne Theatre to see Dr Karl Kruszelnicki discuss where science will take the world in future years. The way he presented was entertaining, engaging and filled with jokes. He talked about several different jobs within certain areas including genetics, engineering, basic physics, computer science and the environment. My personal favourite was the explanation of basic physics; Kruszelnicki focused on the Hadron Collider. His application of diagrams and sciences allowed for the audience to easily understand the benefits of the collider. The two main things I took away from this small part of the presentation was how interesting ionised particles colliding into each other at the speed of light was and also how much I love physics. Other than that, his talk on CRISPR was very interesting but concerning in terms of ethics. Kruszelnicki was an amazing presenter to listen to and has built a solid pathway I’d like to take in my future.

Science Club

Science Club starts up again Week 2, Thursday 2 May. Meet in O1 lab in lunch 1. Bring your lunch. This term’s theme is ‘Microworld’, where you get to use various microscopes to investigate those things we can’t see with the naked eye. We hope to see you there. Bring your lunch.

Middle School Science

This term Year 7 students are conducting an investigation on forces. Students are required to construct and test a balloon powered vehicle to investigate how forces affect motion. Towards the end of the term we will be running our annual Balloon Powered Vehicle Challenge. Each Year 7 class will nominate a representative team to compete and the supreme car building team of 2019 will be recognised and awarded with a certificate and prizes.

Year 8 students have been investigating all things rocks. Students are investigating processes from formation to extraction via mining and processes necessary for consequent rehabilitation. The assessment for this term will be an examination held in Week 8. Students should be regularly revising their notes to ensure they are well prepared. Classes have been most recently been growing alum and copper sulphate crystals to identify how the rate of cooling affects mineral crystal growth. Year 8 science teachers are quite competitive and compete for the title of Crystal King/Queen each year. The title is awarded to the teacher of the class who is able to grow the largest crystals. The current front runner is Mr Brown and his 8E science class. Well done!
MS_Science_001_Copy_.png
Year 9 students have been investigating plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes. Students have an exam at the end of Week 3 (revising of notes is a must in preparation for the exam) for the current unit and will then move on to learning about Body Systems. In the coming weeks you will most likely hear talk of dissections. Students will observe and analyse dissections and tissue of rat, porcine pluck (lungs, heart, trachea and larynx), heart, brain, liver, kidney and bone. Ask your child about the relationship between the structure and function of lung tissue – if you dare!

Creative Generation 2019 Feature Roles Announced

Creative Generation – State Schools onstage is an annual variety concert that showcases the talents of state school students across Queensland. Students are able to audition to be a part of this show in many different performing arts fields along with many other talented students from across the state.  This year, we have had two students successfully audition to be a part of the show: Mia Beame and Regan Hickey. Mia has been asked to be one of the featured dancers in the show, dancing in a number of different pieces across the concert. Regan has been successful at gaining a position on bass guitar in the James Morrison Big Band that will perform during the show, and with this has also been invited to be a part of MOSt (for Musically Outstanding Students) and take part in a 10 day residential camp over the winter holidays. It is very exciting to have two students to be a part of this show as they not only get to perform, but they get to work with industry professionals to learn and gain further insight into being a performing artist. Well done to Mia and Regan.

It was a privilege today to hear from ex-student Ashlee Thomas and her parents sharing their story of survival - The Secret Burden. Just 4 years ago Ashlee was a high achieving and driven student. Since that time she has experienced the lowest of lows in a battle with anorexia. Today Ashlee and her parents, Andrew and Kendall, spoke with the Year 11 Psychology, Year 11 Health and Year 12 Health Education students. They shared openly and willingly, responding to insightful questions from the audience. Ashlee is well into a recovery journey and mentally strong enough to share with others the pain and emotion she experienced, yet self-aware enough to acknowledge that recovery is not (and may never be) complete. Ashlee's story is well and truly one of strength and survival, as is the story of her parents. From the event two main messages were highlighted;

You are you, and being you is the most you need to be. Youth today are constantly exposed to information and advice through social media. Much of this advice is unsolicited and uninformed, however the visual benefits associated with the advice attracts their attention and encourages them to pursue similar behaviours. This constant comparison and associated drive to mimic what is seen results in many youth becoming dissatisfied with themselves.

Talk to your friends and family, even about the stuff that hurts. The single most important tool we have to prevent the development of many disorders is communication with those who love us. Honest and open communication about our experiences and emotions, and acceptance of others being open and honest with us.

Ashlee's journey is public and can be followed on Facebook @TheSecretBurden. This is a purposeful sharing of experience to help others. Remember if you feel the need for support, reach out to a teacher you trust, the PBC welfare team (Year Coordinators, Deans, Guidance Officers, School Based Youth Health Nurse) or contact an anonymous service such as Lifeline on 131114.

Cadets

Aedan Ruth, Year 11 received the highest accolade possible in Army Cadets last week - the National Adventure Training Award. He was one of 8 Army cadets (chosen from 120 Queensland cadets), who were flown to Canberra to attend the special training due to their competence in displaying leadership skills, initiative, and self-reliance. The Adventure training included navigation, first aid, and CASEVAC procedures, quick decision making, survival, watermanship, physical fitness, and endurance. He was also awarded the "Esprit de Corps - Leadership Award" by popular vote for the past 2 years. Congratulations Aedan! What a fantastic achievement. Aedan also took part in PBC's Anzac Day Ceremony on 24 April.

Since joining the Army cadets four years ago he has become a Commanding Sergeant Major with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2). The Cadet youth development program and the opportunities it has provided for Aedan has helped him become a confident, compassionate and self-motivated young man. Aedan’s parents highly recommend the program to any youth wanting to expand their skill set and potential.

Netball

Congratulations to our School Captain, sports excellence netballer and the 2018 Sportswoman of the Year, Abi Houston who was named Vice Captain of the U17 Queensland Netball team. Abi competed in the nationals in Brisbane Tuesday 9-16 April. Abi has dedicated every minute from September rehabilitating her body from a severe netball injury: a tear in her right medial meniscus, tears in the ACL and a sprained PCL. What an inspirational journey and young female athlete!

World Kickboxing Association Success

Congratulations to Jade Summers, Year 12, who recently represented Australia and won Gold when she defeated New Zealand in the World Kickboxing Association Junior Amateur World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand as part of the 4th International and Thai Martial Arts Games 2019. In order to raise the money to fund the trip to Bangkok, Jade not only worked at Sea World all Christmas school holidays but also recycled bottles for months and did a sausage sizzle so that she could reach her goal. What a fantastic effort with an awesome outcome!
