From the Exectuive Principal,
A few reminders in preparation for 2024:
- The first day for Yr7, 11 and 12 will be Monday January 22. Yr8, 9 and 10 will start of Tuesday January 23. This allows our Care teachers to spend the majority of Monday with our new Yr7 cohort. There will be supervision on Monday for Yr8-10 students on Monday if required.
- The mobile phone “Away for the Day” policy will be in force from Monday January 22.
- Families of current students have been issued with the 2024 Student Resource Scheme invoice. The invoice includes due dates and I ask you to adhere to these dates, otherwise this creates additional work for our finance team.
- Plan holidays for during school holidays to ensure maximum attendance
- Finally for students, enjoy the break, be safe, be active and return next year ready to learn.

TRANSITION DAY
On Monday the 4th of December we welcomed over 430 enrolled Year 7 (2024) students to the PBC community. Transition Day supports the Year 7s as they move from their Primary School to Secondary School. On Transition Day, students were assigned to their core classes and experienced lessons with their teachers. We thank the numerous parents who attended this Transition Day, as we understand that the key to a successful education is the relationship built between the family and the school.
TERM 4 REPORTS
Term 4 reports will be emailed home on Friday the 8th of December. Please be sure to share the report with your child, so that they can receive important feedback on their work this year and set goals for 2024.
2024 CLASSES
The 2024 timetable has been constructed to provide maximum opportunities for students across PBC to study courses of choice, in our large and diverse school. Year 9 core classes are driven by electives that have been chosen and there is little flexibility. Students will have been placed in four of the six electives they listed. Both will be visible on the timetable but only two will be studied in semester one.
Parents should be aware that, with the exception of Academic Excellence classes, their child will be with a different group of students next year, and prepare to support them through this change. Coping with changes such as these are important for building resilience – an important quality for success in life. While there is no opportunity to swap classes due to friendships, the usual range of support will be available to all students and their parents to help them through this change.
We welcome back our Year 7s on Monday January 22nd 2024 and Year 8, 9 and 10 on Tuesday January 23rd 2024.
Away for the day
From the beginning of 2024, all Queensland state school students will have their mobile phones switched off and ‘away for the day’.
'Away for the day' will support our school to maintain a strong focus on educational achievement, and student wellbeing and engagement by:
- providing optimal learning and teaching environments
- encouraging increased face-to-face social interactions between students
- promoting the health and wellbeing of students through increased physical activity at break times
- reducing the potential for students to be exposed to the negative impacts of the digital world, resulting from unsafe or inappropriate technology use.

GOOD LUCK YEAR 9
Farewell to our Year 9 cohort who are transitioning to the Senior Secondary Phase of Learning. Our very best wishes for continued success! A special mention to Ms Stacy Hooper who has been with this cohort over the last 2 years. For senior school this group of students will be led by Mr Ryan Jesser in 2024.
ABW
Australian Business Week (ABW) was held in Week 9. Based on feedback from past students, ABW is the most challenging and rewarding week of their school years.
Academic Excellence Year 9 students experience a week where they form a company, create an IT product, design profit and loss forecasts based on simulated results, brand their venture, market their venture, and work as team to create a spoken presentation to shareholders, a trade display and a television advertisement.
Year 9 Dance News
From HOY Stacy Hooper:
What a total VIBE the Year 9 Semi-Formal was!
We celebrated moving from Junior to Senior Secondary in style with a two-course meal at the Currumbin RSL.
Thanks to the parents, teachers and venue, the night ran smoothly.
The 2023 Year 9s were the true stars of the night though, first hitting the dance floor before dinner was even served!
It was such a fun and happy night that made for wonderful memories.
SEASONS GREETINGS
In this, the last newsletter of the year, I would like to wish all readers a safe and happy holidays.

Sustainability
2023 has seen a lot of progress with sustainability here at PBC. We saw the installation of our new compartmentalised bins that allow students to sort and separate their waste in the school yard. This new process should facilitate a 70% reduction in waste to landfill and see us generate much more income from the Container Refund Scheme (CRS). In one week this term, we saved approximately $700 in waste collection charges and earned $430 by cashing in the 10c beverage containers we collected that week alone.
Two weeks ago, we also passed a milestone by processing more than 20 tonnes of food waste through our composting machine over the last three years. This has generated almost six tonnes of compost, most of which has been donated to the Southern Beaches Community Garden at Tugun. We have the capacity to process 20 tonnes of food waste each year so next year will look to divert even more food waste from landfill.
Please encourage your children to use the compartmentalised bins at school in 2024 and separate their waste to help our sustainability program continue to minimise waste and teach students about the role their daily habits playing in making PBC a more sustainable place.
Biology Camp
Biology camp at Stradbroke Island was an unforgettable experience! I made many amazing memories with friends and acquired priceless knowledge about our current ecology unit and the practical work within it. We collected data on and tested the ecosystems of three sites, learned about the rich Indigenous history of Point Lookout whilst taking in the breathtaking views and went for many refreshing swims in the beaches around the island. One highlight was the dress-up and games night, I loved seeing all the creative costumes and engaging in the fun activities!

The Care Carnival for 2023 was a massive hit! Last Friday students from years 7-9 designed and ran a stall in their Care class groups for our annual Care Carnival. It was amazing to see so many kids working together in a team to plan, promote and implement their stalls on the day. It was a huge success with so many innovative ideas providing the students an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities on the day. Stalls that were a highlight on the day were:
- Splat the Rat
- Calorie Challenge
- Spin the Choccy Wheel
- Snow Cones
- Ice Creams
- Hoops
- Toast Toss
- Nerf Accuracy Challenge
- Games Corner with Brentnall & Moakesy
Students also had a blast on the toilet and bath races, mechanical meltdown, extreme fun run and dunk tank. It was a highlight to see Mrs Wise (Deputy Principal) suit up to be the first person in the dunk tank firing line. There was a swarm of Junior School students who flocked to the Dunk Tank looking for the opportunity to dunk Wisey!
Thanks to all students and staff who were involved and made it such a great day and successful event!

Fundraising
In 2023 the student council raised a whopping $10,000 for Albatross Nippers, our chosen school charity. A group of our brilliant student leaders organised to go and volunteer their time with the organisation at Nobbys Beach Surf Club. The Albatross Nippers is a nipper program designed for those children who live in the local community with special needs. This was a very impressive gesture by these students who made a lasting impact on a group of amazing young people. Albatross nippers is always looking for volunteers, if you’re interested look up their website or follow them on Facebook.
Music
Griffin Light-Law has been recognised for his hundreds of hours of volunteering helping young musicians in the Youth Music Venture organisation, as well as with young instrumental music students at Currumbin Primary School, where he volunteers three times a week during school terms.
Griffin started volunteering with the Primary School students when he was just 11 years old!
Thanks to Mr Justin Hart (Instrumental Music Teacher at PBC) for supporting and mentoring Griffin over these last 4 years. Mr Hart is an incredible teacher who goes above and beyond to make the Instrumental Music Program at PBC one of the best on the Gold Coast.

VICTORIAN SPEEDWAY SOLO 250cc CHAMPION
Jordy Loftus from PBC’s Future Stars Program has returned from the 2023 Victorian State Speedway Solo Titles as the 250cc Champion!
Off the back of the Australian Championships in Tamworth last weekend, Jordy made the long journey south to Undera Park Speedway for the 2023 Victorian State Solo Title to once again compete against the best riders in Australia. Despite this new track being a challenge, he claimed 3 Heat victories, entering the Final 3rd highest on points. Starting from the outside yellow gate he led from tapes to the chequered flag to claim the State Title.
We are so very proud of his achievements! ⭐️
The PBC Alliance celebrated it's 10 year anniversary this year! That is 10 years of amazing support for our students from our supportive and generous local businesses and community. 10 years ago the PBC Alliance Business networking breakfasts began, bringing together our business community with key school staff and student leaders to start a wonderful relationship of support and mutual benefit. Our goal was to build a positive and community focused local network of businesses, alumni and community-minded parents and individuals, and we have certainly achieved that goal. We are so proud of how the PBC Alliance has grown to be the amazing community it is today.
Each year we hold 4 business networking breakfasts that allow our hospitality students to gain valuable experience coordinating and catering for up to 100 guests at a time. Our student leaders gain experience in public speaking and our high achieving students are acknowledged at the Industry Awards Breakfast in Term 4 where we highlight the efforts of those students participating in school-based traineeships, apprenticeships and VETis courses.
