2023 has seen a lot of progress with sustainability here at PBC. We saw the installation of our new compartmentalised bins that allow students to sort and separate their waste in the school yard. This new process should facilitate a 70% reduction in waste to landfill and see us generate much more income from the Container Refund Scheme (CRS). In one week this term, we saved approximately $700 in waste collection charges and earned $430 by cashing in the 10c beverage containers we collected that week alone.

Two weeks ago, we also passed a milestone by processing more than 20 tonnes of food waste through our composting machine over the last three years. This has generated almost six tonnes of compost, most of which has been donated to the Southern Beaches Community Garden at Tugun. We have the capacity to process 20 tonnes of food waste each year so next year will look to divert even more food waste from landfill.

Please encourage your children to use the compartmentalised bins at school in 2024 and separate their waste to help our sustainability program continue to minimise waste and teach students about the role their daily habits playing in making PBC a more sustainable place.
