Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpgOur House and Care initiatives continue to facilitate improvement in student behaviour across the school. Coming up this week we have Inter-house Basketball free-throw competitions and PBC’s Got Talent. The much anticipated annual Staff v Students events that include various sports matches and the Great Debate start in the next few weeks.
Gratitude is the focus for Term 3 in Care lessons and the Optima Awards assemblies for Semester 1 begin next week.  We would like to think that our House and Care initiatives have assisted the school to decrease the number of School Disciplinary Absences (suspensions) by over 30% in the past two years and increased the number of students who state in the school opinion survey “That this is a good school”.

The Library Plus building work continues and the expected completion date for this $12m+ project is on track for October. Whilst the majority of the classrooms will be commissioned for 2020, we anticipate having students in the new library by October.

Late last term the school was also informed that our submission for a new Canteen had been successful.  Commencing in mid-November the existing canteen in F Block will be demolished and new one installed.  The new canteen will have more service points to speed up the pace of transactions and reduce wait times for the students.  The canteen also will reduce food handling and allow for more item sale space.  The new canteen is due to be operational on 28 January 2020, which is the first school day next year.

The school will be adding Girls Shorts to the uniform range available for next year.  Currently we have a unisex shorts option available to the girls.  After visiting and speaking with 120+ female students last week, I have taken the feedback back to our convenor and asked for our supplier to come up with a viable option for 2020.

Finally, it was great to see our neighbouring primary school instrumental music students’ visit on Monday for the Music Celebration Festival.  PBC will hold Jazz Night on Wednesday 7 August, another wonderful Performing Arts opportunity that includes performances from Laurence Hobgood and Rhiannon, PBC Stage Band 1 and 2 plus the Liam Butler Duo all while enjoying a delicious meal prepared by our amazing hospitality students and staff.

Regards,

Chris Capra, Executive Principal

Message from the Principal, Middle School

Welcome back to a busy Semester 2, I hope you have had a lovely few weeks with your families. For the first 3 weeks of Term 3 we welcome Mr Brad Dixon to the Middle School Deputy Principal role. Mr Dixon is replacing Mrs Wise who is taking some very well deserved long service leave. Thank you, Mr Dixon for your enthusiasm and Senior School experience you are bringing to the Middle School Admin team.

At the start of a new Semester, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the way in which our Middle School students welcome new students beginning a quality education at PBC. This is a daunting moment for both parent and child, but our students are so accepting and welcoming and this is what sets PBC apart. Providing a quality education is not just about achieving the best possible results, but about fostering a caring and supportive environment as well. If you have a child who has started at PBC in our Middle School, I welcome you to our community.

Along with several of our Middle School leaders, I had the opportunity to attend a two day Professional Development seminar to listen and learn from a leader in Educational Research, Dr Lyn Sharratt.  Dr Sharratt addressed the changing dynamic of modern day education and learners as well as outlining the key factors needed for improvement in student outcomes. Dr Sharratt provided the detail, the theory and the practical application necessary for teacher clarity of purpose. Essentially, Dr Sharratt explained clearly and with precision the possibilities in improved outcomes when adults learn and work together to share the responsibility for student learning outcomes.

Parents are our learners' first teachers. They are hugely influential in the educational journey of each child. With this in mind please take the opportunity to review your child's progress at school and refresh their goals for Semester 2.  Please find below 5 Questions to kick start a discussion with your child about their learning:

  • What did you learn today?
  • How did you do?
  • What did you do if you didn't understand?
  • How can you improve on your learning?
  • What are you most proud of?

Our teaching staff at PBC are always very keen to hear from and assist parents or caregivers. Please take the time to reach out to your child's teachers to ask about their progress and learning. Here are 5 questions to help you engage with your child's teachers.

  • What is my child learning?
  • How is he/she doing?
  • How do you know?
  • How can he/she improve?
  • What support can I provide to help with improvement?

I encourage you to stay informed about your child's progress, growth and achievement.

Alison Fahlbusch, Principal Middle School

NAIDOC Celebrations

On Wednesday 26 June PBC held our annual NAIDOC Celebration Assembly. Due to the inclement weather we gathered in the hall with our Middle School Care Classes and the senior Murri Jarjum students.

This assembly was a special one for PBC, not only were we celebrating NAIDOC week but for the first time we inducted PBC’s first Murri Jarjum leaders – Shara Saunders, Harmony Conrades, Kieeshah Ainsley and Reef McKay.

NAIDOC Celebrations are held across Australia each July to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is Voice Treaty Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.

We were lucky enough to welcome the Bundjalung Kunjiel Dance Troupe, formed in 2009 by Stephen Larcombe, a graduate of PBC.

Uncle Graham Dillon, a traditional custodian and elder of the Kombumerri country, kindly gave up his time to speak on the value of celebrating NAIDOC week and the importance of carrying these ideals through everyday life.

Message from the Deputy Principal

Part of PBC’s decision to introduce the CARE program involved developing and strengthening the relational culture of our students. Throughout the year students have been, and will continue to work on understanding the benefits of creating positive peer relationships. These are critical to forming high standards of behaviour, though skills which are transferable, as they develop into adults in our local community. I would like to highlight the importance of these high standards of behaviour when visible in our local community. As our students make their way to and from school, they need to be mindful of the fact that they are representing PBC and influence our reputation. We receive numerous phone calls from members of our community throughout the school year to report student behaviours, and we would like to ensure these remain a positive experience for all involved. We encourage all students to wear their school uniform with pride and respect the values of what it means to be a PBC student. We have recently received concerns from members of the community around student behaviour on bikes. Please have a conversation with your child about the importance of wearing a helmet, abiding by road rules and riding with common sense when in and around pedestrians on footpaths.

With the half way mark of the school year here I would encourage all parents to regularly engage in conversations with their student about ‘How are they progressing/performing at school? This discussion may take lots of different twists from academic concerns and homework due, through to friendship issues and what events are coming up. All of the resulting conversations are positive in that it builds relationships with the student, parent and school community. If we can support you and your student in making school a positive experience and assist in them achieving their goals, then please contact PBC to engage the relevant support.

Education Queensland developed the ‘Everyday Counts’ initiative to highlight the importance of attending school every day. PBC recognises this, and will actively monitor the attendance of every student. You can assist by encouraging your student to attend school every day and be vigilant in contacting school when absences occur so our record keeping is up to date.

I wish you all the best for the Semester ahead.

Brad Dixon, Acting DP Middle School

Semester 1 reports

Every parent should now have read their Semester 1 report, which was emailed to you in late June. Should you have any concerns about your child’s report, do contact their teacher, by email in the first instance. All teacher emails are listed on the PBC website:

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Ourschool/Contactus/Pages/Staff-Contact-List.aspx

Conversations with students

We strongly encourage students, as well as their parents, to read school reports.

Reports can form the basis of positive, productive conversations between parents and their children. Look for the successes – perhaps an improvement in effort in a challenging subject, or attaining a grade that was previously not possible. Celebrate wins, large and small, in a way that suits your family culture. Even if your pre-teen or teen acts like they don’t really care about their successes, almost all will quietly appreciate the attention.

Setting goals for Term 3

Students are currently receiving feedback on last term’s assessment and should be setting goals for Term 3. These goals are recorded on the Optima Goal pages (p.4-5) of your student’s PBC Student Planner. Please know what your child is hoping to achieve this term and have conversations with them about how they might achieve their goals. Show their teachers that you have had this conversation by signing in the appropriate column in their Student Planner.

Students Leaving Early

While we know that the best place for students to learn is in class, we also understand that from time to time, students need to leave school early to attend medical or other important appointments. It is an expectation at PBC that students would do this no more than twice a term.

If you require your child to leave early, your child must:

Have the written permission (a note or email, not a text) of their parent/caregiver, which they present to Middle School Student Services before school. This enables the Dean or Deputy to give their permission for the student to leave early. Then they should sign out at Middle School Student Services at the appointed time.

Notes from Parents or Caregivers must state the:

  • Date
  • The specific reason for the student signing out
  • If it is an appointment, the time, location and professional with whom the student has the appointment
  • The time the student needs to leave school
  • The signature of the parent/caregiver

Further details are provided in the PBC Student Planner. Remember, every day (and lesson) at school counts, so please make appointments outside of school time whenever possible.

Balloon Challenge

In Term 2, Year 7 science students completed an investigation on forces which culminated in the development and testing of a balloon powered vehicle. Students competed against their classmates and classes completed against classes until the supreme car building team was unearthed at our annual completion. The winning teams are below:

1st - 7M - Joel, Jye and Max

2nd - 7O - Malia, Oakley and Danielle

3rd - 7P - Matilda

4th- 7B - Charlotte, Rebecca and Ava

Well done all!

Term 3

Term 3 will be a busy time for our scientists! Year 7 students will be investigating the Earth, Sun and Moon systems and how these systems interact to influence us here on the Earth. Students will explore Tides, Moon Phases, Eclipses and Solar Phenomena. This term students’ knowledge will be assessed in an examination in Week 8. Be sure to remind your budding scientist to start revision in Week 7!

Year 8 students are studying Energy. This term students will complete an investigation on the elastic energy of balls. Students will examine and analyse how changing ball type, drop height, temperature, air pressure or surface type affects a balls rebound height. Ask your child how many energy transfers and transformations occur from a ball’s release to the height of its rebound. Students will communicate their findings in a scientific report (this terms assessment) and should commence working on this at home in Week 4. The draft will be due in Week 6 and the final in Week 9 (9 September).

Year 9 science students will explore Exothermic and Endothermic chemical reactions in this term’s ‘Everyday Chemistry’ unit (chemical reactions often involve a change in energy due to breaking and forming of bonds - reactions that release energy as heat are known as exothermic reactions while those that absorb heat are endothermic reactions). For their assessment, students will be required to design and conduct an experimental investigation to analyse how energy in a reaction can be utilised. Students are required to write a report detailing their findings. Assessment will be assigned in Week 4; please check that your child is working on their assessment for homework from this date. The draft will be due in Week 6 and the final in Week 9 (9 September).

CE4K – Cutting Edge for Kids Conference – Griffith University

Cutting Edge for Kids 2019 was an incredibly rewarding experience. It provided us, as students, with the opportunity to experience firsthand what it is like to present in front of a group of students. As kids who all enjoy STEM it allowed us to further explore an area we are passionate about and instil some of that passion in the next generation of students. Seeing the excitement on all of the students’ faces was certainly one of the most rewarding parts of the day as it showed us the difference we are able to make.

On the day we were divided into two separate groups. One group led a forensics workshop that involved the students testing and identifying their fingerprints, as well as using pH to identify a solution; this allowed them to catch a ‘criminal’. The other workshop was on Rube Goldberg Machines and consisted of the students being separated into groups to create their own.

This day is definitely a highlight of the STEM year and one that I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be involved in.

Jaime Pryor, Year 11, PBC STEM Ambassador

PBC Students who conducted the workshops were STEM Ambassadors Jaime Pryor, Erin Woods, Jarreth Bisley, and Reef Thompson, assisted by Harrison Younie, Jaida Flynn, Matilda Heufel, Sarah Place, Matthew Lee, Jazmine Jones and Talulah Ratcliffe.

National Music Representative

A big congratulations to Year 12 Music Excellence student, Charlie who is currently in Scotland, Edinburgh touring with the National Youth Wind Ensemble as principal flute player along with 60 other Wind Ensemble members across Australia. We have been receiving lots of updates from overseas and gathering from the photos, looks like she is having the time of her life. Well done Charlie! https://www.facebook.com/rcsofficial/videos/652990571839740/

Creative Generation 2019

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music (MOST) is a biennial event offering a residential extension program for up to 81 Musically Outstanding Students (MOST) from Queensland State Secondary Schools. The MOST program extends musically gifted and talented students in a 10-day program of musical development in large and small ensembles, tutorial groups, aural musicianship and a range of music and cultural activities. Conductors and tutors are eminent musicians who are recognized as leaders in their respective fields.

The 10-day program culminated in an exhilarating gala concert featuring the 2019 MOST students performing alongside professional conductors in a range of ensembles including the symphony orchestra, big band, string orchestra and symphonic winds. Kayla Latter and Loren Skyring attended the MOST Gala concert during the school holidays to watch and support Regan Hickey who was selected as the Bass Guitar player and percussionist, he did our school proud and it was a real treat to see Regan represent our school alongside other exceptionally musically talented students across the State.

Creative Generation Choral Fanfare

We recently competed in the Creative Generation Choral Fanfare. The group received Gold in the first round and were invited to compete in the regional finals. At the end of last term we competed in the finals and received Best Performing Choir in the South East Region. Unfortunately, our region wasn’t selected to compete in State Finals (top 5 schools in the state), but the students involved were ecstatic about the achievement as it’s our first time competing in this biennial event.

Voices in Paradise

Voices in Paradise is the Gold Coast a cappella revolution and an initiative between The Blenders Chorus and Griffith University and is known to attract the largest a cappella audiences in all of Queensland. This youth development event is a workshop and concert combined into one day of quality education and world class performances by the best Australia has to offer. PBC Vocal students participated in the all-day singing workshop at Griffith University during the holidays. They were trained by world renowned educators like the Velvetones (National A Capella champions) and after a hard day’s work students showcased their final product for the community of a cappella lovers at The Arts Centre Gold Coast for a one night only concert. Thank you to Krissy Tassone for organizing this event the students had a great day and night.

Working Musicians Program

PBC students enrolled in the Working Musicians Program debuted their original material at their very first collaborative Gig Night at Dust Temple on Friday, 21 June. The night was a huge success, with a sold out audience and awesome atmosphere of support for live, independent music. Feedback from the venue, the local music industry, as well as students, parents and the school community has been positive and supportive of the opportunities offered by this program. For the remainder of the year, the focus of the program will be recording/production and independent release, so you will surely be hearing more from these PBC Working Musicians. Thanks to all staff who attended the evening to support our talented students and many thanks to Eliza Davidson with the support of Loren Skyring for making this evening happen.

Inter-school Sport operated through our Wider District School Sport on a Wednesday afternoon for 8 weeks in Term 2. Our district is made up of teams from Elanora, Merrimac, Benowa and PBC.

The outstanding PBC sporting tradition continued this year with the mighty REDS once again dominating the Wider District Inter-school Sport Grand finals. PBC entered 49 teams into the district competition and 39 teams contested Grand Finals with 27 PBC teams winning premierships.

These teams have now qualified for the World of Sport Gold Coast finals held in Week 7 in Term 3.  The A Division teams will compete in a full day of competition against the 3 other districts in the south coast region.

The time and effort of the many coaches who look after our teams should not be underestimated and I would to thank them on behalf of all the students involved.

I am happy to report that almost all of the Year 7 students continue to do a great job looking after their computers and bringing them to school charged and ready to go.  Teachers are developing more digital content for Year 7s through the Class Notebook software and are relying on students to bring their computers to school every day.  Students are reminded that if they have any hardware issue with their device, to come to EBlock and submit their computer for repair and collect a spare computer so they can continue to access their work.

The IT Department visited all Year 7 students during the last week of Term 2 to inspect their devices and identify any that needed to be repaired over the school holidays.  It is important that all Year 7 devices are in perfect working condition ready for the NAPLAN online trial that is happening in Term 3.

PBC is pleased to announce that the One2One Program will continue in 2020 for the new Year 7 students.  All students are invited to join the program as there will be no provision for BYOD computers to connect to the network in Year 7.  The School is currently investigating a number of computer models for next year.

Congratulations to PBC’s Ezekiel, Kai, Cody and Jed who have made the QLD U15’s AFL team to go to Launceston, Tasmania at the end of this week for the School Sport Australia National Championships. They made the team at the end of May after being in a dominant South Coast team that won all their games by more than 60 points, giving up only 8 scoring shots in 4 games. All 4 boys will be key players for the Qld team. PBC has the largest contribution from any school.

QLD Women’s Origin team visit

Before the holidays we saw our Open Rugby League Boys have the great opportunity to run opposed vs the QLD Women’s Origin side for the second year in a row. Led by Jillaroo captain Ali Brigginshaw and with PBC alumni Tazmin Gray, Amber Pilley and Jessika Elliston in the side, it was a high energy contest with both teams preparing for their own Origin Battles that week.

Digital Innovations

Year 8 Digital Innovation students have finished off the term by hosting a tradeshow. Students were to develop an idea for a mobile application, build a prototype of the app and develop an advertisement to show to potential 'investors'. We invited parents and students to attend and to vote for the app they felt would be the most successful. All students did an exceptional job at producing an app but the winning team was "Snake-it". An app designed to recognise snakes, give the user details on how dangerous it is and if needed, call a professional to relocate it.  Highly commended also went to "D2D", an app for managing donations to different charities and "onBus", an app designed to organise and track public transport travel and notify caregivers when children miss their bus.

$20 Boss Competition

What could your students do with $20? The answer might surprise you! Year 9 Economics and Business Students at PBC have recently participated in the $20 Boss Competition - a nationwide in-school entrepreneurship program. Students were given $20 of start-up capital donated by The National Australia Bank to create, launch and operate a business venture over the course of the school term. Students created their own products and businesses from the ground up with the aim of raising as much profit as possible. We have seen businesses including the creation of surf wax, all kinds of unique baked goods, games, challenges, bath bombs, artwork and many more. All businesses are to utilise the principle of innovation to create a financially sustainable enterprise. Well done to all involved.

Help your child to learn

Did you know that there are some simple things parents can do to help their children learn across all year levels?  Talking with your child about their learning and goals, and limiting screen time can make a difference.
