Dear Parents/Caregivers,
The Junior Secondary Academic Awards Night celebrated our Year 7, 8 and 9 students who have excelled in their academic subjects on Monday night. The night was well complimented with our Year 7 Dance Excellence Students and despite an electronic keyboard malfunction, three talented singers; Amaya Frawley, Isla Freer and Anika Loftus performed a great rendition of "What you won't do for love"; acapella, despite not having rehearsed without the music accompaniment.
The Annual Arts Awards evening was held on 28 October to celebrate 32 of our brightest Artists from Years 7-12 being awarded a number of different accolades. We welcomed two alumni to our list of PBC Arts Ambassadors – past students Emily Monsma and Cassidy Mackie. Both Emily and Cassidy shared breathtaking performances. Congratulations to Loren Skyring and the team for another fantastic awards evening.
Year 10 and 11 exams are not far away and the junior secondary students are now working towards culminating activities in their units of work. I look forward to seeing the students at school every day as culminating learning activities and assessment preparation become the focus of each day.

On 28 October the annual Arts Awards Evening was held. It was a celebration of 32 of our brightest Artists from Years 7-12 being awarded a number of different accolades from ‘Future Star’ to ‘Leadership and Service to the Arts’. We announced two alumni as Arts Ambassadors – past students Emily Monsma and Cassidy Mackie who were interviewed by School Captain Isabella Edge and Vice Captain Leilani Nield. Both Emily and Cassidy shared breathtaking performances.
The evening included performances and exhibitions of all of our Arts areas – Dance, Drama, Visual Art, Media, Music and Instrumental Music. Past and present students shared twilight performances on the grass for guest prior to the beginning of proceedings while they enjoyed drinks and nibbles.
It was a fabulous way to end a massive year for the Arts – most notably our ‘Reminiscing – 50 years of PBC Arts’ celebrating PBC's anniversary.

The third Reds Go Riot PBC Comedy Night was an absolute hoot! A 150 strong crowd ranging from 2 to 82, every topic was open to slather!
Our fantastic Reds from across all year levels, smashed their first ever comedy gig after a month of weekly workshops with the dazzling Mandy Nolan, including a 1-1 session. Four weeks of developing ideas, building trust, and breaking down barriers. Despite their nerves, they rose to the challenge and went out there to massive applause and roars of laughter. They were so professional and really demonstrated leadership and the Reds spirit of Rise Every Day Stronger!
Special guests Erik the Dog and Joel Salom capped off the evening with their unique but hilarious act. Raffle prizes galore were drawn at the end to delighted faces.
We were able to raise $811 dollars that we will proudly donate to Boots For One And All Community to assist them in the already amazing work they're doing in our community and beyond.
Congratulations: Emma, Adi, Cash, Phoenix, Chanel, The Islas, Logan, Jack, Jade, Will and Tora. (Apologies to Tora's mum.) Much appreciation to Front Of House Mrs Hillcoat, Mel Allen - P&C President, Nat Hill, Cade on Tech, Mr Pasley and Lucas on cameras and to Mrs Wise representing the Executive Leadership Team.
Thank you to our donors: Sisterhood Coffee, Shingle Inn, Palm Beach SLSC, Home Of The Arts, Crema Espresso, Just Cuts - The Pines, Butcher's Table, The Shelf - The Pines, Totally Baked - The Pines, Currumbin RSL, Balboa Italian - Palm Beach, Boots and PBC SHS for the merch packs!
Big thanks to our PBC Alliance, P&C and our Executive Principal Mr Chris Capra for collectively supporting this initiative that is completely unique to our school. Huge gratitude to our school community for coming together to continue championing our diverse students in their journeys. Comedy allows our students to explore possibilities with curiosity rather than fear.
The shared experience of coming together to laugh is very special. It's an integral part of human interaction. More than that though, comedy is never just thoughtless entertainment; it often helps people cope with situations that are otherwise impossible to understand. We needed a laugh on Wednesday and gee whiz, did we laugh!

26-28 October saw 63 Year 11 students and 5 teachers attend the 2022 Biology camp at Morton Island. The students completed a range of field testing in a number of ecosystems on the Island, where they built their skills and understanding in collecting primary ecological data, but also had the opportunity to enjoy island life for 3 days while building on relationships between both students and teachers. Luckily the weather was outstanding allowing for snorkelling, swimming, sandboarding, beach sports and tours of the island where students spotted turtles, dolphins, fish, stingrays and even some sharks. Students also participated in the ever famous Biotic dress up night, where the classes competed for the top spot in a range of activities. The toughest competition was for winner of the 2022 best dressed, which went to our resident cat, Raisa Bielicka, whose signature ‘meow’ won the crowd over.
Please email your student’s excellent achievements to us. We love celebrating students achieving in the Arts, sports, academics or community service. We would love to hear from you! Please email us at news@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au or you can message us through Instagram or Facebook with details of your student’s achievement and include at least one photo, and/or any links to media articles that we can share.

Basketball CBSQ
Congratulations to our Basketball Excellence students. Both our Year 9/10 girls and boys teams and our Year 7 boys team participated in the CBSQ competitions over the past two weeks. All athletes should be proud of their efforts and the way the represented the Reds on the court. A big shout out to the parents who helped with transportation and scoring. Thanks!
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
The next Duke of Edinburgh Awards adventure was in Week 10 of Term 3 where students embarked on a trip to Binna Burra National Park. The students certainly met some challenges where the weather was perfect one day, raining the next. It was an experience to remember for all.
Day 1 saw Executive Principal Chris Capra join us on The Caves track.
Day 2 was memorable for the company we shared.

PBC Leos Fundraising
The PBC Leos hold a BBQ every Saturday from 8am - 11am at Currumbin Fair outside the IGA. The Leos are raising money to help Year 10 student Kai Colless who was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare vascular condition, AVM, which caused sudden, complex and aggressive neurological symptoms. Kai has recently arrived back to the QLD Children's Hospital after a successful operation, to begin long and intensive rehabilitation to regain his independence and mobility throughout his body.
The Leos have pledged to use their 2 highest raising BBQ's they achieve until the end of the year and the Palm Beach Lions Club match the amount, then pass it on to the Colless family. This is another amazing cause that the Leos are supporting in 2022. Be sure to get along to Currumbin Fair IGA every Saturday morning to grab your sausage sizzle and help them raise as much as they can for Kai!
