Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Sgalippa_Anita.jpgWelcome back for Term 3.

Thanks you for taking the time to read our newsletter.

It’s with great pleasure that I have accepted the offer to lead the team at PBC. After 14 years at PBC it will be interesting to experience some different aspects of leadership here at the school.

On Tuesday 5 July, Minister Grace Grace visited the school to officially launch the construction of the Sports Excellence Precinct.  In addition, the Minister announced the $600,000 refurbishment of the C Block toilets. We would like to thank a number of staff and student leaders who dropped everything to make this happen. The visit wouldn’t have been as successful as it was without Mitch Kennedy coordinating the Student Leaders and Bernie Sargent and Jo Sexton coming in to cater for the event.  John Lacey coordinating access to and security of the grounds, Heidi Wallace had just come back from Cairns, yet still drove up from M’Bar to coordinate the media and Dean Miller worked in the rain to ensure that the school was looking good. Our P&C executive came along to support and Neil Mackay was able to brief the Minister about his passion project of the last decade coming to life at long last. Physical construction work on the Sports Precinct will commence in about six to eight weeks.

As well as the works on a new Sport Hall on the far side of our oval commencing this term, we will also hold our final special event for our 50 years with 'Reminiscing - celebrating 50 years of the Arts at PBC'. Ths event will be on Saturday 3 September, 4:00-7:00pm. Please save the date and come along to what is sure to be a remarkable and entertaining night.

Our first week highlight was our whole school community celebrating NAIDOC week. One of only three times that we gather together as a whole school and squeeze into our Quad area. Thank you to all who created the program of events and also thank you to the staff who support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and their culture at our school on a weekly basis.

I hope this newsletter finds you feeling proud to be a part of the PBC community and better connected to what is happening.

NAIDOC

Palm Beach Currumbin High celebrated National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Wednesday 13 July 2022 in the Senior Quad. Special guest included Cr Gail O’Neill, The Hon. Karen Andrews MP, Laura Gerber MP, as well Aunty Joyce Summers (local Community Elder), and staff and students from local primary schools. This year’s celebration had many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families attend. Hosts for the celebration was Tanu Nona and Bailee Whitehouse and we were lucky to have Aunty Eulanda Simpson, local Traditional Custodian for ‘Welcome to Country’ with her Grand Daughter Isla Simpson a student from Year 8. We had local well known Bundjalung Kunjeil Dance Troupe including our students Jakeem, Bella and Tia also performing. The highlight was the presentation of the many awards to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students starting with Challenge Awards, Sports Excellence, Academic Excellence, Creative Arts, GPA 4 and Above Awards and High Attendance Awards. This year we also introduced a new award, the ‘Community Award’, this year awarded to Tia Thompson and Reef McKay for cultural support for the A&TSI Students at the school. After the Assembly, families were invited to spend time together with a morning tea. Students were invited to stay around and do some dot painting with Lalania Tusa, special guest for the afternoon, and sports activities on the oval with Bryce O’Connor from Deadly Choices.

ATSIAP  State Finals

PBC's Bryony, Will, Tayah and Shaylee recently competed against 16 other teams at the ATSIAP (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program) State Finals. It was a 2 day event where students stayed onsite at the Women’s College dorm rooms at UQ and got to have a taste of university life with tours and visits to different campuses. A visit to the Gumurri unit at Griffith, and an moving talk by Associate Professor (Uncle) Marcus Waters, had both students and staff inspired. Highlights of the trip included yarning with aunties and uncles from all over Qld and meeting students from so many varied communities.

Congratulations to Will, Bryony, Shaylee and Tayah on giving each challenge your best effort and for taking out 2nd place in the ATSIAP Cultural Trivia Challenge! Your exceptional behaviour over the 2 days is to be commended, you are all assets to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and our PBC school. Thank you to the ATSIAP team from Education Queensland for the opportunity to attend. We are aiming for a junior and senior team in 2023!

Clontarf Academy News

PBC is well on the way to becoming a more sustainable school. We are in the process of sourcing compartmentalised bins for the schoolyard that will replace our existing wheelie bins and allow students to separate their beverage containers from co-mingled recycling, food waste and general waste. This will drastically decrease the amount of waste we send to landfill and increase the amount of waste we recycle, which should also see us generate significantly more income from the Containers for Change Container Refund Scheme (CRS). Any students or staff who would like to participate in the CRS and help us raise money for the school can pick up an orange bag from D block staffroom to take home and collect eligible beverage containers. The orange bags can be returned to the Reds Gate on the oval before 9am on a Wednesday morning for collection. Members of the local community are also welcome to collect an orange bag from the Reds Gate on a Wednesday morning or drop off their eligible beverage containers in garbage bags or boxes.

We have continued to see success with our composting program. Our industrial composting machine has now processed more than 7,200kg of food waste from within the school and local community. This has generated more than 1,800kg of compost that has been used on the gardens at school as well as at the Southern Beaches Community Garden in Tugun, The Eco Village in Currumbin Valley and at Elanora High School. When the new compartmentalised bins arrive later this year, this will divert even more food waste from landfill and generate more compost for use within the school and local community.

PBC Tennis teams shine at State Finals

PBC took 2 strong open tennis teams up to Rockhampton to compete against the best players from Qld. It was a tough 2 days of competition with many players playing up to 8 matches per day. Both teams gave it everything they had and played some amazing tennis. Our girls came 5th in Qld and were very unlucky not to make the top 3. Our Boys who suffered a major injury setback 2 days before leaving for Rocky, managed to top their pool beating Kelvin Grove in the process who have some of the best players in Australia. They then beat Sunshine Coast Grammar School in the Semi Finals to make it into the Grand Final against Brisbane State High School. Unfortunately the boys lost narrowly in a final that we felt we were more than capable of winning. The boys were devastated but are determined to come back next year and win the tournament. Congratulations to both teams on a phenomenal achievement. We couldn’t be more proud of all the players, 2nd and 5th in the State!!!!

Cross Country

Huge congratulations to Sienna Bush, Savanah Bush and Maddy McPherson who won the State Cross Country Relays at Nudgee College at the end of last term. The girls won convincingly in the 14 girls age group, with Maddy and Savannah running up an age group. A great achievement for these girls. Also congratulations to Bobby Kennealy Flegler, Hunter Anderson and Leo Deegan who ran in the 14 Boys event and just missed out on a bronze medal.

Rugby League Success

Congratulations to Rugby League Sports Excellence students Keano Kini, Josh Lynn and Michael Roberts who were part of the winning QLD 16-18yrs schoolboys team in the recent Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League National Championships in Redcliffe. The team, coached by PBC’s Geoff Eggert, went through the competition undefeated and beat a strong NSW CHS team in the final 32 -18. Keano was voted as the MVP for the QLD team.

Keano and Michael were also selected for the prestigious Australian Schoolboys team who will play later in the year.  Congratulations to all.

Congratulations to PBC's Nelson Makaafi, Marley Mclaren and Kaleb Smith who were selected to play for QLD Maroon U15 Rugby League team and Te Ira Mokaraka and Luke Jones who were selected to play for the QLD White U15 Rugby League team at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League 15-18 yrs National Championships.

All Reds cheered for Alumni Tom Dearden when he made his debut in the winning team for the Game 3 Origin match! All of us here at PBC are so proud of how Tommy has persevered through the last couple of years to reach the pinnacle of our sport, State of Origin. In an arena where mental and physical toughness is tested like no other, Tommy was made for Origin. To wear the famed Maroon number 6 makes it even more special. Congratulations Tommy, Qlderrrrrr!!!!

Taekwondo

PBC's Luke McMahon (Year 12 sport excellence student) travelled to Korea during the school holidays to compete in the Korean Open Taekwondo tournament. Luke won a gold medal and was awarded best male athlete of the tournament in his age group. This fantastic result was Luke's first international event competing as part of the Australian taekwondo team. Other results this year include gold medals at the Gold Coast Open, where he won the Junior and Senior divisions.

These results are due to lots of hard work, dedication and amazing coaches. Luke trains at Hartmann Taekwondo Currumbin and with the Performance Pathways Program run by the AIS / CombatAUS at Queensland University. An extra special thank you to coach, Ms Anya Hart and the sport-ex program which is a vital part of Luke's training.
