7 March 2022

We sincerely hope that our entire PBC community are safe and well after the rainfall and flooding of recent days. Hopefully a return to school will provide some normality to any families who have been impacted by this extreme weather event. The next few weeks form a busy part of the Senior Secondary Calendar, with our first whole-school carnival and assessment commencing in all year levels clear highlights.

Senior Study Skills Program

Griffith University have been tailoring their study skills sessions this term for our PBC students and presenting online on a Monday afternoon from 2:15- 3:00pm. So far we have seen two sessions dedicated to helping students Thrive and Survive Senior, with one final session for Year 11's on Monday 21 March, focused on resilience, which was postponed from Feb due to school closure.

There has been some fantastic feedback from the students attending who have been learning about how to develop invaluable skills to support them through their senior years.

Griffith University has partnered with PBC this year to provide a range of sessions for years 10-12. Students are encouraged to keep an eye out for upcoming sessions that will be promoted throughout the year.

Senior Jerseys

In the coming weeks, Year 12 jerseys will be distributed to our Class of 2022. Students will be reminded of the importance of what this jersey represents in terms of upholding our school values, both within and outside our school gates. Please note that as per Uniform Policy, student must continue to wear the PBC school shirt underneath their jersey, it must be worn as an outer layer to full school uniform only.

Assessment

Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au

Year 11

The upcoming Year 11 exams, impacting some subjects have been pushed back due to the recent weather. Please note the new dates for Year 11 examinations are Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 March. Please note Year 11 classes run as normal during this time – if a student is not in an exam, they should be in class.

Revised schedule will be placed on the website and accessible to Year 11 students shortly.

Week 10 Exams - Year 10 and 12

Parents are reminded that exams will be scheduled in Week 10 at the end of each term for Years 10 and 12. The Year 10 and 12 shutdown calendars for Week 10 of this term (28 March to 1 April) will be published on the school website later this week. As per the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines and handbooks, family holidays are not grounds for missing assessment or exams.

Year 10

Year 10 students are reminded that their results in Semester 1 will determine their pathway and subject availability in Years 11 and 12. To study an ATAR pathway students need to be achieving at least a B level in English and Maths. If students wish to study senior Science subjects they also need to be achieving at least a B level in Year 10 Science, ( Academic Excellence students will have slightly different cut offs).

Year 10s are also reminded that they can commence School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATS) in Year 10. These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, up to 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options.

Year 10 exam shutdown timetable should be published on the school website by the end of this week.

Year 11 students

Year 11 students should be very busy completing assignments and revising for upcoming assessment.

In the QCE unit credits are banked into each students learning account at the end of each unit. The implication for this is that students who are not engaged in learning and perform poorly in a number of subjects could find themselves ineligible for the QCE as early as week as Term 2 Week 5 (20 May).

Many students will have completed traineeships and higher VET certificates before they sit external exams in November of 2023. This will provide students with extra QCE points and help ensure that they get the QCE even if they have a poor external exam. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block to register for a traineeship.

Year 11 student have been reminded this week of the need to pass English and Maths subjects to meet the literacy and numeracy components of the QCE.

Year 12 students

All Year 12 students should be in the process of finalising their Problem Solving Modelling Task for their Maths subjects.

Year 12 students on an ATAR pathway are again reminded that they must pass an English subject for Unit 3 and 4 to attain an ATAR.

Year 12 exam shutdown timetable should be published on the school website by the end of this week. Students are reminded that they must be up to date in their VET certificates at the end of this term. If they are behind they will be required to complete catch up sessions during shutdown.

Useful websites

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority has created a new website (https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html). This is a great source of information on the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Senior Education Training (SET) Plan, future pathways, subjects and assessment.

Griffith University has updated their admissions pathways https://www.griffith.edu.au/apply/admission-pathways/vet. This document highlights the large range of courses that students can apply for a Griffith University with VET qualifications such as Certificate III, IV or Diploma in 2021.

All students and parents need to be aware of the Senior School Assessment policy. The policy is published on the school website (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/ ), under the curriculum /testing and assessment tab. Assignments and presentations etc. are due at 9:00 am on the due date and teachers must make a decision on the evidence which has been submitted at that time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date.  Students requiring special provision should note the new terminology of Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA); please refer to the published document for more detailed information.

Week 10 new units will commence

This term has been problematic for students and teachers in terms of getting into routines. Between now and the end of term we will work hard to maximise the learning time that we have remaining. Whilst some assessment will be delayed our aim will be to complete assessment and then move into the next unit straight away. Week 10 will be a normal school week and as such I would ask families to plan for their child to be in attendance as most classes will be starting new work.

Term 1 Reports Delayed

Student reports will be emailed home on 22 April 2022. Some adjustments have been made to assessment due dates due to days lost due to extreme weather school closures.

Please ensure that the email address we have recorded for you is current.

Term 1 reports are interim reports. This means that they will indicate a child’s Term 1 achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject with grades only. We encourage you to follow up on this report by attending Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 2. Information about how to book for Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent with reports.

NAPLAN 2022

At this stage, PBC will be participating in NAPLAN online this year. Tests will be conducted beginning in next term for Years 7 and 9. The online format is interesting in that it will be adaptive and will cater to the diverse levels that students are at based on their responses to early questions on the tests.

We encourage all students to be part of NAPLAN, and we make special provisions for students with disabilities. If your child requires adjustments then please contact Jane Bell HOD Inclusion via email jebel0@eq.edu.au. PBC teachers frequently use NAPLAN data to make decisions about differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom so knowing where each child is currently at in terms of their literacy and numeracy is very important to our planning. A standardised test like NAPLAN is a great tool to help us.

Work Experience Year 9

Year 9 work experience has moved to Term 3 Week 10. Information packs will be issues to students late this term at assemblies. Families need to find their own placement so it’s a good idea to start thinking about this now.

We have had a wonderful start to 2022!

Our classrooms are a flurry of excitement and energy as our students engage in some innovative and challenging learning experiences!

Instrumental Music ensemble rehearsals and lessons have begun last week. We have a fantastic group of instrumental music students that are busily preparing for Eisteddfods and Fanfare and are excited to be working with guest conductors and workshop presenters at our IM camps for 2022.

We welcome Mrs Tanya Mason who will be working with our Stings students on Thursdays, and Ms Kerri Buchanan who will be working with our ensembles on Fridays.

GC5 Cluster Days – CAX Experiences

Our CAX staff have been busily preparing some immersive experiences for all of our Creative Arts Excellence students during the GC5 Cluster Days this year.

All CAX students have been encouraged to attend these days as they will be working with industry professionals to extend their knowledge and skills. We also have a number of amazing excursions and incursions organised for our CAX students to experience.

Including a Frankenstein beatboxing workshop presented by HOTA, workshops from Zen Zen Zo Theatre, ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ show at QPAC, Life Drawing workshops, PBC Alumni working with our artists, trips to the Conservatorium of Music, Yoga and pilates strength sessions and an Excursion to GOMA to view the PBC winners of the Creative Generation State Schools Visual Art Awards! Wonderful opportunities for our current Visual artists to see the work of our 2021 students.

And finally, a very special trip to QPAC to see our 2022 Arts Ambassador Courtney Monsma take on the role of Anna in Frozen the Musical!

We look forward to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of PBC this year, and are busily planning a Celebration Arts Festival on Saturday 11 June.

PBC would like to introduce and welcome our newest member to the hospitality team Michael Rambold whom joined the dynamic and passionate team of Tracey Maher, Alysha Dufty, Anna Wyatt and Jen Mason.

The Hospitality department have hit the ground running planning for what looks like one of the biggest events of the year. Students and staff are busy preparing for the 50th Reds Sports Dinner on the Friday 4 March and we are looking forward to catering an event to help welcome past and present sportspeople and provide a service that will culminate PBCs reputable hospitality department.

Within the Australian Curriculum, Year 9 students are introduced to the “Australian Guide to Healthy Eating”, convenience foods, Indigenous foods and Dietary related diseases.

Year 10 students explore Nutrition, Food Around the World, Herbs and Spices and Food Science.

Our Senior Students are actively introduced to Hospitality and Food Trends whilst our energetic Year 12  students demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of sustainability in hospitality and fine foods. We look forward to meeting you at one of the many events this year.

Year 9 Food Technology – Apple Crumble Day

Year 12 Cert III Hospitality – Coffee Shop

Friday 4 March was the first of many celebrations for PBC’s 50 year Anniversary. On that evening we hosted a Gala Sports dinner where we acknowledged the countless champions who walked through our gates. Across 18 foundational sports we had 3 nominees chosen by our expert panels of present and past coaches to be considered for induction into the newly created Reds Hall of Fame. The winners on the night were awarded with a professionally drawn portrait caricature, a bottle of RED and adulation from their peers.

Click the link to see the PBC 50 Years Reds Sports Dinner Program:

The nominees and newly inducted (in bold) Hall of Famers were:

The Half Century REDs Rugby League team selected from our 51 NRL Graduates by the 6 Past and Current Head Coaches (Rod Patison, Phil Sutherland, Geoff Bagnall, Aaron Zimmerle, Brad Davis and Tim Maccan) was also announced.

The evening was full of laughter, warmth and even the occasional tear as mentors were reunited with their champions and all reminisced on the proud tradition and culture of their beloved school.  A gala sports evening actually became an evening of gratitude where all that attended were thankful for their time as a Red. #Foreverproudtobered

Over the past few weeks the other PBC Half Century REDs teams have been announced including AFL, Netball and Soccer.

The PBC 50 Years Reds Sports Dinner was not a fundraiser but a celebration of our history of sporting achievement. Our Hospitality students and staff did a phenomenal job of preparing and serving the delicious food at the dinner. The room looked amazing. The students were able to use this event as part of their assessment. All left over food was packaged into individual meals to be delivered to the victims of the SE QLD and Northern NSW floods with the help of our wonderful hospitality staff.

We would like to give a shoutout to our sponsors of the event including Backbone Kitchen & Bar, Tweed Seagulls RLFC, Coles The Pines, Gold Coast Titans, Gold Coast Suns, Rebel Sports Community Kickbacks Program. Thank you to all the staff who contributed to ensure a successful and celebratory night.

We encourage parents/caregivers to email your student’s excellent recent achievements to us. These achievements can be in The Arts, sporting, academic or community service. We would love to hear from you! Please email us at news@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au with details of your student’s achievement and include at least one photo, and/or any links to media articles that we can share.

Spark their Future – Persistence

Why persistence matters and how to help your child develop it

Not giving up easily and sticking at stuff when the going gets tough is an essential skill at school, work and in life.

There are things you can do to help your child develop persistence, a trait that will help them at school and beyond. Remind your child that when they find something hard, persistence – or refusing to give up is what will give them the best chance of reaching their goal.

The Spark their Future website has tips to help you develop your child’s persistence ‘muscles’, check out this tip sheet.

It's about effort, not how smart you are

Remind them they can grow their brain through persisting with their learning because in the same way our body's muscles get stronger when we exercise, our brains grow when we learn.

When a child can get through something by sticking at it, they experience a sense of accomplishment and their confidence grows.

When they find something hard, remind them that intelligence on its own cannot overcome obstacles; it's persistence - refusing to give up - that will give them the best chance of reaching their goal.
