Dear Parents and Caregivers,
“Number 700 Bus Driver phoned to share this message. Approximately 50 PBC students on the 700 bus this afternoon were well behaved, displayed exceptional manners with no swearing at all. The bus driver of No. 700 wanted this to be noted and shared with PBC staff.”
The community notice how our students conduct themselves in and around the school and their perceptions have a flow on effect to opportunities such as employing PBC students for work experience, traineeships and even employment. For these reasons we attempt to keep our behaviour and presentation (uniform) standards high in the community.
We have been working with the students this term as they all returned from COVID restrictions about correct uniform including socks, shoes and jewellery. Parents are encouraged to provide a reason for instances where a student cannot be in uniform. Students who are not in uniform without a valid reason will have a consequence applied.
2022 Next Step survey
The Queensland Government will conduct its annual state-wide survey of Year 12 completers in 2022. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June next year, our current Year 12 students will receive a letter from the Minister for Education or an email or phone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office inviting you to complete the survey. To enable them to reach you, please ensure your contact details are correct in your learning account by logging into the student portal at https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/ Further information on Next Step and results from previous surveys are available online at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep.

PBC was lucky enough to celebrate NAIDOC with our full school assembly on Wednesday 20 October (postponed twice due to COVID).
Once again the student’s displayed exemplary behaviour as they listened about the importance of NAIDOC Week and watched their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peers be acknowledged for their academic and sporting achievements.
Thank you to the Bundjalung Kunjiel dance troupe who performed a series of traditional dance and stories. It was great to see Bella, Nakeeya and Jakeem perform with the troupe. We were also lucky enough to have special guests in attendance with Mr Matthew Mills, Regional Community Education Counsellor, Mr Brandon Wakeling, former PBC students and current Olympic Weightlifter and Deadly Choices Ambassador, as well as Ms Tamika Upton, Deadly Choices Ambassador and Australian Rugby League footballer who plays for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL Women's Premiership. Our assembly was hosted by Year 11 and 12 students Ethan, Myrisha, Tanu and Bailee. We also had one of our Year 7 students Harpa speak about the importance of this year’s theme, Heal Country.

PBC Media students and families and friends attended the Film, Tv and New Media Showcase in the Theatre on Friday night. The audience were treated to some outstanding work of our students! The evening was hosted by our Senior students. Many thanks to Mr Tom Pasley and Mr Cameron Sarasola who organised the evening. Popcorn and lollies were enjoyed by all. We need to roll out the red carpet next year!
Arts Awards Evening
The PBC Arts community were excited to welcome 35 of our outstanding artists to attend the Arts Awards Evening last Thursday. We hosted our artists and their families from Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art, Media and Instrumental Music. The guests were treated to an afternoon of twilight Music performances and drinks and nibbles in the grassed area outside the theatre before we entered the theatre for the awards ceremony and live performances from our outstanding artists category.
We were extremely honoured to induct PBC Alumni student Courtney Monsma as our Arts Ambassador for 2022. Courtney was interviewed on stage and then performed for us live! We are so very excited to have hosted an international star and look forward to seeing her perform as Anna in the hit Musical Frozen when it tours Brisbane in February 2022.

Visual Arts Excellence
The State School’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art were awarded recently at The Walls Gallery at Miami. Over 500 pieces of Art were entered in the competition from all over the state, and 3 PBC students received 3 of the 8 Excellence Awards for the region, and 1 student received a Commendation.
Ryan Thwaite, Allie Baldwin and Gabriella Kilgariff all received the coveted Excellence Awards for their pieces, and Neroli Light-Law received a commendation. The most exciting part, is that Ryan, Allie and Gabriella’s pieces will be exhibited at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art! The first time PBC has had pieces exhibited at the State gallery! Congratulations!
After our 2 week break of school holidays, the Leo’s Club are back for the last term of 2021. We inducted 3 new members this month and were presented the Leo’s Club of the Year award at our annual school house cup assembly. This month of October we made many donations and planned many events.
Mr Bullpitt came in to talk to us about the Dare 2 Be program and the Kokoda Challenge, where teams of students train weekly to build up their strength for the Kokoda Challenge that will take place in 2022. With Matilda moving the motion, Miranda second and all in favour, we donated $300 to help fund the program for the students. The Leo’s Club have also decided to make a team including Cooper, Adi, Miranda, Matilda, Kayo and Gracie for the challenge, with the Lion’s Club fully funding the team. PBC Leo’s also donated $400 to the Kmart Wishing Tree, where we will buy gifts for girls and boys, $200 each, for families in need. We also attended our monthly breakfast for the Currumbin Special School.
Coming up next month is the Breakfast for the Currumbin State School 2021 Leadership Team. This event, we will attend to discuss with the Year 6 students about the Leo’s Club and to join when they start their high school journey! We are also in the midst of nominating people for the 2022 Leo’s club Committee, with voting commencing next month.

Growing Good Humans – Year 8/9 Workshops
Our Year 8 & 9 students recently took part in our Growing Good Human’s Workshops.
Tommy Herschell again challenged and inspired our young men. We are always so grateful for the time Tom gives PBC, he has never charged us ever. Tom also helped Anna Wyatt and Paul Bullpitt develop the GGW workshop that has now been delivered to all the young women in Years 8 to 12.
Here’s what some of the kids have told us about their GGH experience:
“ It was so valuable to talk to someone you do not know and learn how to start a meaningful conversation. I even got to make amends with someone that I wished I had done before, getting the opportunity to see how she honestly viewed our relationship previously. By the end of the session, we had a much greater understanding of each other than before.”
“It was a great workshop and really opened my eyes up and made me think that I should be more grateful for everything I get given and what I have.””
“I liked hearing other people’s stories in such a comfortable space and it made me realise that everybody has something that their going through.”
“This whole growing good thing is so inspiring!”
“It’s great to be able to talk about how and what your feeling.”
