Year 12 Update
Please check your email for further information regarding the upcoming Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and Formal Dinner. Also keep an eye out for more information regarding tertiary opportunities for Year 12 families in a special bulletin. The Graduation and Formal update includes information for non-ticket holders regarding livestream details as well as directions for all attending the event in person. Thank you to all families for your understanding around this COVID-impacted event.
A special congratulations to our Year 12 students (and our Year 11 Variable Progression students) who are still undergoing their External Exams. These have been a massive logistic exercise and these students can be proud in their knowledge they have prepared, performed and achieved well in what has been a significant change to senior schooling.
Year 10 and 11 Exams
Year 10 and 11 shutdown exams will commence in the week of 23 to 27 November. The shutdown timetable is still being finalised and will be published on the school website (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment) in the next week. All students may have timetabled exams up to and including the last day.
The last day of school for Year 10 and 11 students is Friday 27 November.
A reminder that all drafts and assignments are due before 9:00am on the due date and that exams cannot be given early to students because of other commitments. The school Assessment Policy is also published on the same link above as shutdown exam timetables.
A reminder that in 2021 all Year 10 and 12 assessment will be scheduled for the last week of each term. Year 11s will have a different schedule for Term 1 and 2 however will also have exams in the last week of school in Terms 3 and 4.
Uniform
As the end of 2020 approaches, parents and caregivers are asked to continue supporting our school's policy by ensuring students wear their PBC uniform well. This means having correct uniform items including footwear, limiting jewellery to simple earrings and a watch only, no visible makeup and hair worn in an appropriate manner. Many students identify themselves as PBC students on their resumes, and our school's reputation is in part spread by the way in which students are seen by the public.
Release of Year 12 results
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will release student QCEs and Senior Statements and Statements of Results through the Student Portal on the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html from 9:00am on Saturday 19 December 2020. Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students have been emailed and reminded on many occasions to log into this portal to check their account details but some have chosen not to do so.
Students will be able to download hard copies of their qualifications directly from the Student Portal on the myQCE website. They will not be sent hard copies from the QCAA though they will be able to request hard copies in the Student Portal.
Please note that as Year 12 results and Levels of Achievement are calculated by the QCAA, Year 12 students will not revive an Exit Statement or Report from PBC; they will only receive published results from the QCAA via the Student Portal.
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
ATARs are calculated by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). All ATAR eligible students should have registered with QTAC (https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar/ ) to ensure that they receive their ATAR on 19 December.
Year 12 school leavers seeking employment
A reminder to register with Ms Shreeve in Y block with your contact details and expressions of interest, this will be forwarded to The Department of Employment Small Business and Training which will broadcast students with relevant vacancies and opportunities.
Please note that in the new QCE students cannot be exempted from assessment in Unit 3 and 4 due to medical conditions/family circumstances. Students must complete all assessment in Unit 3 and 4 to attain credit for the QCE. Students that miss assessment due to extenuating circumstances will have to provide documentation to apply for extensions/change of date for assessment. The school may then negotiate a more suitable time for assessment that meets QCAA deadlines. This may mean the student completes alternate assessment at the end of the year or early in 2021.
Students that have a long standing medical condition that affects them completing certain modes of assessment should by now have applied for an Access Arrangement and Reasonable Adjustment by the QCAA with the school Guidance Officer Mr Jones.

Science Club
The current topic for Science Club is forensics. Students have been analysing fibres, fingerprints, blood spatter patterns, soil, and handwriting. Students are now applying these skills to analyse a crime scene to determine which suspect is responsible for the homicide of ‘Tiffany’ in the aquaculture room. Students have collected evidence from the crime scene, with Science Club regular Ty Vogel sketching the crime scene. Over the next couple weeks, students will analyse the evidence to determine the events that occurred, and which suspect is responsible for the homicide.
Science Club is held each week on a Thursday during first lunch in O1. Students from all year levels are more than welcome to attend. Each week there is a lucky door prize for a $5 tuckshop voucher and a pick from the prize box.
After a wonderful year with the 2020 Leo’s committee, it has come to the time for our new committee for 2021. Our new committee members nominated and voted in for next year include Lily Suttle as our wonderful President, Ethan Campbell as Vice President, Emma Suttle as Treasurer and Michelle Wykes our Secretary.
This month we donated $300 to “Fight for Youth” – a youth centre in Currumbin. Leo’s will volunteer their time to “Baby Give Back” on the weekend and continue to cook a delicious sausage sizzle each Saturday at Currumbin Fair. We would love to see you pop in for a sausage at Currumbin Fair and always welcome new members to our meeting on Wednesday mornings.
Gold Coast Schools Mountain Bike Titles
After a year of turmoil the school mountain biking team finally had their first competition last Friday 30 October. The Gold Coast Schools titles were conducted at the Nerang Mountain Bike Precinct with 150 competitors from 22 different schools. Competitors were able to complete the three different tracks up to five times posting the fastest time possible with the combined best time from these tracks becoming their overall time and determining their position. PBC fielded a strong team of 28 riders and were consistently placed in the top ten across the different age groups, which lead to the winning of the Overall Champion School Point Score for the second year in a row. All of our students showed great perseverance in very hot conditions with some of the outstanding results being Ethan Quirk 3rd in a field of 20 Yr 11/12 boys, Daniel Bray 4th in a field of 42 Yr 9/10 boys and Billy Wadwell placing 3rd in a huge field of 70 Yr 7/8/boys. The mountain bike team continues to grow and improve, in 2021 we are looking forward to regaining the momentum lost by the Covid-19 break this year. The team is also looking to increase the female participation in 2021, we provide a supportive environment for all riders with an emphasis on enjoyment and skill development at all levels. A massive thank you for all the parents and caregivers and sponsors for the ongoing support of our team. If you are interested in becoming part of the mountain team please see Mr Clark, Mr McManemin, or Mr Brown.
Year 11 Business students attended the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship in Week 2 of Term 4 and had the opportunity to hear from a variety of industry and academic experts in the field of Business and Entrepreneurship. From Dr Baden U’Ren, the Head of Entrepreneurship at Bond University, to Jack Ray, Executive Director of the Ray Group, the students were able to hear real world experts sharing their knowledge and experiences. Rosa Willis, the co-founder of Gold Coast start-up Crock’d, was one of the panellists students really enjoyed, as she detailed the meteoric rise of her business from small local operator to US expansion in only eight months. Students will apply this knowledge through their Year 12 Business studies and this opportunity provided them with valuable exposure to real world examples of business in action.
We encourage parents/caregivers to email your student’s excellent recent achievements to us. These achievements can be in The Arts, sporting, academic or community service. We would love to hear from you! Please email us at news@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au with details of your student’s achievement and include at least one photo, and/or any links to media articles that we can share via our Parent Newsletter, internal communications and social media.
