Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Previously I have made students and parents aware that the Department of Transport / Translink were going to start enforcing students either showing their bus pass or Go Card when catching the bus. On Tuesday we had a team of Transport Inspectors at the school in the afternoon to check that students had the correct pass. It is our understanding that this event was to gauge the levels of student compliance and to issue warnings. It is also our understanding that future visits from the team of inspectors will be more about enforcement. Please remind your children that they need either a bus pass or Go Card to catch a bus.
Regards,
Chris Capra

As a part of our 2019 strategic plan, our focus has been on building capacity and supporting our students within a Positive Education framework. It has also been a priority to engage students in programs to cater for and support them in developing their Social and Emotional Wellbeing and General Health. As a part of this focus we are fortunate Ms Hilary Wilson, our School Nurse, has been working with our year groups to improve knowledge about their own health and wellbeing. Hilary’s next session with our students will be a split-gender presentation on Tuesday 22 October with our Year 10 students. This follows a widely successful session with our graduating Year 12’s.
Uniform Reminder: Next year all students will be required to be wearing PBC branded socks. These are able to be purchased from the Uniform Shop for $4 a pair.

2020 School Captain Elections
During Week 1, PBC commenced our election process for our 2020 School Captains. 30 gifted and courageous Year 11 students delivered stirring messages to their peers and teachers detailing their leadership vision and credentials leading into a student vote. These speeches were inspiring and honest and we wish all of our wonderful candidates well as they undertake the election process. The 30 candidates are pictured here with the wonderful Amanda Stewart, their proud Year Coordinator and leadership mentor. The 2020 School Captains will be formally announced to the school community on Academic Awards in Week 6 of this term.

The Middle School team welcomes all our students and families back to Term 4. For our Year 9 cohort, this is the final term with us in Middle School as they progress into Senior School next year. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 9’s all the very best for the remainder of the year and to remind you all to finalise your subject selections for 2020! Week 10 of Term 4 ALL Year 9 students are expected to attend work experience. So, we ask all our Year 9 students to start looking for possible work experience providers and to start the process. For further information please contact Rachel Mockeridge in A Block.
Term 4 is always an exciting time, with end of year celebrations and summer holidays to look forward too! Before we get there however students must finalise all subject selections for 2020 and for our Year 7 and 8 cohorts they have school camps in Week10 to look forward to, the first for PBC. Please remind students to finalise paperwork and payments if they are hoping to attend.
Good Luck and congratulations to all Middle School students who will participate in Dance Night and Under the Lights next week! These nights are a fabulous showcase of our talented dance and music students and I encourage you all to come along and support our very busy Creative Arts Department. Thank you to our Middle School Arts teachers for supporting and mentoring our students in their creative pursuits!!
Reporting
By now you will have received your child’s Interim Report for Term 3. Should you have any particular concerns, do make contact with your child’s teacher through the PBC website; all teacher emails are listed in the Contacts List: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Ourschool/Contactus/Pages/Contactus.aspx
Students do not see nor are they sent a separate copy of their report. So please take an opportunity to show your child their report, celebrate their successes and set goals for the coming Term to finish the year strongly.
Teachers are working hard to ensure students have the best possible learning outcomes by the end of the year and welcome your involvement in student improvement.
If an expected report has not arrived by email, do check your junk mail. Following that, please contact the school Administration to rectify the issue.
Attendance
‘Every Day Counts’ is a priority for our Middle School students and the 2019 target is 95%. Every student is expected to be in attendance until the end of term. All student attendance is monitored daily and parent/caregivers will receive attendance letters for any child that has had 5 or more unexplained absences. An unacceptable attendance record will lead to disciplinary actions as per the Parent Compulsory Schooling Obligation – Failure to attend 178(2) of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.
We encourage students to arrive approximately at 8:30am so they are present for CARE class roll marking at 9:00am unless there is a valid excuse for absence.
Leaving early (sign out) notes need to be written and signed by a parent/caregiver and delivered to the Middle School Student Services prior to 8:45am. It is appropriate for you to sign out no more than 3 times a term for an appointment or an activity during school hours.
The sign out note must specify:
- The specific reason for signing out (doctors, dentist, etc)
- The time & date that you need to sign out of school
- If a medical appointment, the time, location & professional that you have the appointment with must also be listed.
Full Day Absence
Parents/caregivers must notify the school and provide an explanation of a student absence by 9:00am on the day of the absence. You are only required to use ONE notification method.
The priority for notification is:
- Text message: 0447100239 – clearly state student name, your name, date and reason for absence
- Email: absences@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au – provide student name, date and reason for absence
Unexplained absence
Text messages are sent out to parents at 10:00am to notify you of an unexplained absence. If you receive a text message, you can reply to the message, providing your student name and reason for absence.

The following vaccinations are offered for Year 7 students:
- human papillomavirus (HPVN)

Uniform and Behaviour
As PBC is a uniform school there are high expectations for all students/parents to continue to support these dress standards until the end of term (see School Student Planner – Uniform Code pg10). We remind all parents black polishable leather/synthetic shoes are to be worn with the formal blue uniform.
A reminder to all parent/caregivers to know The PBC’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students (see school website). Every student is expected to follow the Optima Code ‘Be Respectful, Be a Learner and Be Safe’ during the school day and in with wider community as they are representing PBC SHS.
Senior Maths
Year 10
It is a big term for Year 10 students who are completing assessment that will be preparing them for Year 11 and 12. Advanced maths are setting up for a semester exam, this will be the largest amount of content they have had to prepare for; their study habits will have to be consistent throughout the term. All other Year 10s are completing their first Problem Solving and Modelling Task (PSMT). The PSMT is important because teachers will be focusing on teaching students the best strategies to complete these open ended tasks, it is important that students take on board as many of these strategies and use them when they move up into the senior school.
Year 11
Students just wrapped up their Unit 2 exams and for many this was the largest base of content they have ever had on one exam. Many students flourished under the pressure and some are still finding their feet. We hope that all students have discovered the importance of consistent revision throughout the unit.
Year 11 students will now be embarking on the next stage and are beginning their Year 12 work. Students will cover content that is assessed next year. It is important that they keep their notes organised for when they are studying next year. Their first major assessment piece will be a PSMT; given to them at the beginning of the year and will be a good way to start the year with plenty of momentum!
Year 12
This is your chance to finish strong. Year after year we see big movement in students’ results in term 4 as many students wind down. If you are shooting to get that higher OP then make the most of term 4!
Good luck to all and remember "MATHEMATICS is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: It is about UNDERSTANDING.” William Paul Thurston

Rugby League Excellence
Two of our PBC Year 11 Sports Excellence students Troy Duckett and Tylee Donovan took part in the 2019 Koori Knockout Rugby League Championships held in Tuggerah on the Central Coast of NSW. Both played in the U17 Division for the Kempsey Sharks team.
Troy in Fullback and Tylee in the Centres, the team had a successful first day to defeat both Koori Brothers United 28 - 0 and 2829 CAB Next Gen Coonamble 24 - 0 and progress to the semi-finals. Two days later their semi was a much tougher battle against the also undefeated Wijadjuri United, however the boys got a well-earned victory winning 20 - 12 to progress the Grand Final.
Going in as under dogs against a quality Western Koori Eels side the Kempsey Sharks produced an unbelievable upset to win the game 12-10 and become 2019 Under 17s Koori Knockout Champions.
Gymanstics Excellence
Congratulations to PBC's Isabella Norgate competed at the Gymnastics State Championships. Isabella was named Under 12’s Beam Champion with a 9.375 and 2nd place on floor with a 9.55. Isabella competed against 51 gymnasts and finished with the 11th highest overall score.

Students gained incredible insight into what it takes to record, produce and perform original music at a professional level. It was a huge, hands-on, jam-packed day of inspired music making and we can’t wait to share more with you soon!
Conservatorium of Music SHEP Program
Please see attached a photo of our students who participated and performed at the annual Conservatorium of Music SHEP program. More than 1,000 young musicians from across the country participate in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) – students need to be nominated for excellence in their field to attend.

Thank you to all the parents who dropped our Drama Excellence students off for their field trip. The students went to the world premiere of the fantastic, new work by First Australian playwright, Steven Oliver. The work was challenging, cathartic and deeply emotive. A great day was had by all of the students. A big thank you to the Arts department for organizing the field trip.
Basketball State Championships
Congratulations to the PBC girls open basketball team for placing 3rd at State Champs. The girls had huge hearts in true Reds Spirit to place and receive a medal. Their comradeship and respect for the coaching staff, each other and the Reds assisted in this huge achievement. Further congratulations must go to our graduating athletes in Tayla Sleaford, Tatiana Wright and Maddison Andrews.
PBC Tennis – State Finals
Congratulations to our PBC Tennis Teams as they have just come back from the State Finals in Rockhampton where both the boys and girls finished 5th in the State which was a great achievement. The students played some amazing tennis over 2 days in tough conditions and with a bit of luck with the draw could easily have finished in the top 3 which is definitely the goal for next year!!
Care Community Project
This term in Care, students worked together on a Community Project, supporting a local charity of their choice. It was great to see the variety of organisations represented and the quality of projects presented at our recent MS and SS Showcases. The Community Projects aim to increase student awareness and involvement in the local community as well as develop their interpersonal skills, understanding and empathy. Projects included knitting blankets for the homeless, creating art work for a local kindergarten, building ramps to increase disabled access in the local area, collections of food, toiletries etc for the homeless, sun safety campaigns, nude food promotions, stationary collections and a touch footy tournament raising awareness for Mental Health (just to name a few).
The level of effort displayed at our recent Showcases was overwhelming, with special guests from a number of organisations in attendance.
Senior Showcase
Middle School Showcase
Mrs Bourke's A8M Care class collected goods from the PBC community to put together hampers for Homeless Youth. Each hamper was of a different category and was tagged with an inspirational quote. Today students proudly presented their hampers to Pauline from Homeless Youth who was so appreciative of their efforts to help people in need.
Our wonderful V10M CARE Class elected to take part in a community project this term; supporting Orange Sky Australia by collecting unwanted showering and toiletry items to help people experiencing homelessness to feel a higher sense of dignity and care from within their local community. Our CARE class collected around 90 packs, some small and some large, and worked incredibly hard to distribute items.
It was great to have Jane from Orange Sky join us last week to help build the relational culture that supports students in feeling more connected to the school and the local community.
Container Deposit Scheme
Thank you to everyone that continues to support our student by donating their recyclable containers to our CDS program. Last week was the largest week we have had for some time raking in about $350-400 worth of containers! This is great for our students eco-project plans and great for the environment! If you would like to contribute to this wonderful cause, and form of fundraising, please bring along your containers to the Reds Oval on Wednesday mornings between 7:00 and 9:00am during term time.

News from our Partners
A message from the School Physio, Inspire Physiotherapy
Since the 1970's, most health professionals lived by the RICER acronym when managing soft tissue injuries, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Refer. This narrative has recently been challenged with many health professionals believing ice may actually be detrimental to healing. So with all this information (and misinformation) out there what is Mum or Dad supposed to do when their child comes home with a sore shoulder etc?
The good news is you most likely not going to do any further damage to the injury whether you apply ice or heat and both can reduce pain significantly. There is no strong evidence to support doing either over doing nothing, there is also no evidence to suggest doing either will delay healing or make the problem worse. My advice is to do what feels best. In my experience working with athletes is that ice tends to help pain and reduce swelling quicker in peripheral joints (shoulders, knees, ankles, wrists etc) while people tend to get more relief from heat with back and neck injuries. Bear in mind that everyone is different.
You can read more about ice and heat and how they effect the body in more detail on my blog.
TAKEAWAYS
- Ice reduces blood flow and swelling to an injured area and reduces pain
- Heat increases blood flow to an injured area an reduces muscle spasm
- Early movement promotes faster and more effective healing in absence of significant trauma
- The research on the effectiveness of ice and heat on recovery from injury is inconclusive
- I find heat works best for backs and necks
- I find ice works best for peripheral joints (shoulders, knees, ankles etc)
- Do what makes it feel better!
If your child is struggling with a soft tissue injury you can access our FREE Injury Clinic on Monday afternoons (3:00-6:00pm). This free clinic is accessible to all PBC students. Click here to book an appointment online or call/text Matt on 0400 163 609.
The clinic is located at the school tennis courts. Parents and friends are welcome to book appointments for a standard $78.00 fee
