Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpg

Today we had a “soft launch” of the new Library Precinct. The Year 12 students undertook their exams on the top floor in the function centre and classrooms.  We hope to remove the construction fence late this week or early next week so that the students can use the undercover and garden spaces.

Images of the New Library Precinct

For Year 11 students, the first day next term sees the commencement of Unit 3 of their senior studies.  Unit 3 sees the start of summative assessment and counts towards end of school results. It is important that all Year 11 students are back at school and ready to go from Tuesday 8 October (as the Monday is a Public Holiday).

With so much happening, in brief;

  • Congratulations to Bianca Benigno and Tom Pasley who have been nominated as people who contribute greatly to the local environment preservation by the Gecko Environmental Group,
  • Our Daffodil Day event(s) were again well supported and reflected the great work undertaken by Erin Woods, one of our enterprising and community minded students,
  • The PBC School Council welcomed its first student Erin Woods and Mike Kelly General Manager of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, as the Community Representative to the Council,
  • Congratulations to the Senior Boys Soccer Team who won the School’s Premier League,
  • Congratulations to the PBC Junior Secondary Debating Team who won the Gold Coast Schools Final.

Regards,

Chris Capra, Executive Principal

Senior Exams

Please note that the majority of Senior exams will be conducted in the top floor of the new library. Refer to shutdown timetables below for exact rooms.

Year 12 QCS exam

Year 12 QCS students will sit the Queensland Core Skills test on Tuesday 3 September and Wednesday 4 September. A hot breakfast will be provided for all QCS students on these dates from 7:30am in the Trade Training Centre. All students are encouraged to attend.

The school will provide all stationery required for the QCS exam except a scientific calculator and correcting tape.

Students will sit the Writing Task and Multiple Choice I on Tuesday followed by the Short Response and Multiple Choice II on Wednesday. Exams will commence at 9:00am and conclude around 2:40pm each day.

We wish our final QCS Cohort the best of luck with their exams.

Shutdown

The Senior shutdown timetables have been published for students on the student drive at school and are also available on the school website under curriculum/testing and assessment.  Please ensure that your student has checked this and knows the date, time and room of all their exams.

  • Shutdown commences for Year 12 students on Monday 2 September. All students will have a Maths exam this day.
  • Shutdown commences for Year 10 runs from Thursday 5 September to Monday 9 September.
  • Shutdown commences for Year 11 students in week 10 Monday16  September to Friday 20 September.
  • In 2020 Year 12 and Year 10 students will have their exams and assessment due in the last week of each term (Week 10).

Assessment policy

Students are reminded that they must apply for an extension or change of date with the relevant Head of Department if they are going to miss assessment. They will not be allowed to sit an exam before the rest of the cohort. Going on holidays before the end of term does not constitute a valid reason for an extension/change of assessment date. Please refer to the School Assessment Policy on the school website for more information and for copies of the Application for Extension and Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments form (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment).

All 11 and 12 students are again reminded that they are expected to be passing at least 5 of their 6 classes to demonstrate that they are “actively engaged in learning“ at school. Students must remain QCE eligible to stay enrolled; as such all students should be busy revising, studying and completing assessment tasks at the moment.

Year 11

A reminder that all Year 11 students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete a VET certificate that meets the requirements of the QCE. This course will have a cost of $250.

Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in Term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of 25 to 29 November.

Diploma of Business

Any Year 11 student wishing to enrol in a fast track Diploma of Business course should contact Mr McDougall. This course will be conducted at PBC within the school timetable and will commence in Term 4 2019 and will be completed by the end of Term 3 2020.

Prestige Services Training conducts the course at a cost of $1990. This is a very attractive and popular course due to the range of tertiary options that it provides to students. An information evening regarding this course will be scheduled later in Term 3.

School Leavers

Senior students wishing to leave school and enter the construction industry may wish to contact the Gold Coasts Trades College regarding a Construction Apprenticeship Bootcamp. This course runs for 7 weeks and provides students with a Certificate 1 in Construction and industry work experience.

An electrical course (Certificate 11 in Electrotechnology) and an automotive course (certificate 11 in Automotive Vocational Preparation) will also commence early September.

Note that students must have left school to receive government funding to enrol in this course. Call 07 5669 9000 or visit gctradescollege.com.au for more information.

Instagram Icon to Fight Cyberbullying

This year PBC’s Middle School students identified Instagram as one of their most used apps.

Instagram has recently implemented new features to prevent cyberbullying behaviour and empower targets of cyberbullying. These include:

  • an automated user notification when their comment may be considered offensive before it’s posted. This intervention gives users the opportunity to reflect and undo their comment, and prevents the recipient from receiving the harmful comment notification
  • a new blocking system called Restrict, will enable users to block others without their knowledge.

The Education Queensland Cybersafety team advised students to google their name & delete any inappropriate images on their phones. Future employees may google your child’s name even for part-time job positions.

Parents should know your child’s password, check their content regularly and be a positive role model for your own social media platforms.

Middle School Student Leadership Selection

There is a buzz amongst Year 7 and 8 Middle School students at present as they consider who they will support for a leadership position in 2020.

The positions available are:

Year 9 2019 only:

  • Middle School Head Prefect

Year 8 and 9 2019:

  • Middle School House Sports Captain
  • Middle School House Cultural Captain
  • Middle School House International Captain

Speeches and interviews will be held at the start of Term 4.  We wish all of our students well on their leadership journeys.

Year 9 Work Experience Update

Thank you to those parents and caregivers who have supported their Year 9 children to find a work experience placement and return their paperwork to Middle School Admin.

Students have until the end of term to collect a form from Middle School Admin, make phone calls and secure a placement. All parents and caregivers have been emailed about this process.

PBC Year 7 2020

We are well into the process of organising classes for students who will start Year 7 at PBC in 2020. If you are the parent of a Year 6 student, please get your enrolment paperwork in now, so that we will be able to plan for supporting their learning. Only students whose paperwork is finalised by Term 4 Week 8 can attend Transition Day.

Meeting Commitments

The ‘busy end’ of the Term is upon us. It is a good time to check in with your student to see how they are feeling about their achievements so far this term and how they will meet the challenges that remain. While it will include subject assessment, demands might also include sporting finals, musical or drama performances and club activities, not to mention family and social events.

You can support your child by helping them map out their final few weeks – their commitments, deadlines and plans for revision and study. You can access your child’s assessment calendar at the link below. Breaking large tasks – such as preparing to write a History essay under exam conditions – into smaller tasks – maybe half an hour of practising writing out essay plans – can reveal how achievable the job ahead actually is. This in turn can reduce stress for students – and their parents.

Plan To Finish Well

Each day, students at PBC are challenged to ‘give nothing but the best’. To achieve their best, students need to be fully committed to their attendance and learning. In Middle School, teachers will be teaching course work right up to the end of term. When assessment is completed, teachers introduce foundation concepts for the coming term. For these reasons, please plan for your child to attend school through to Friday 20 September.

Please note that to maintain the integrity of tests, the PBC Assessment Policy states that exams are not to be sat early. If a student is forced by their commitments to miss a test, they will sit it as soon as possible afterwards.

After the holidays, school recommences on Tuesday 8 October 2018.

Senior B Debating Finals

The picture says it all! PBC was the ONLY State school that made it through to the Senior B Debating Finals at Bond University recently (a total of 130 teams, over 700 students competing). Our Senior B Debating team (made up of Year 10 and 11 students) were also up against Year 12 students during the competition doing brilliantly to hold their own. This year is the first time PBC has made it to the finals in any division of debating.

The kids had only 1 hour to prepare their debate:  The topic was 'Fake news is a real problem'. We took the negative. Then team had to debate in a theatre in front of at least 50 people - most daunting. At the presentation awards that followed, PBC was announced as winners! Such a proud moment for everyone, parents, friends, coach and especially for Robbie James, Toby Cooper and Talulah Ratcliffe. Well done team RED!!

Senior Boys Soccer - Premier League Win!

PBC defeated Chancellor College 4-1 in the Schools Premier League Grand Final. After going behind early the Reds gradually fought their way back into the game and equalised on half time with an Eli Gambley goal. The second half was an avalanche of Red as Luke Beckwith scored a double to add to a Hayden Anderson goal. Well done boys! Great result!

Coach - Shane Robinson & Luke Morley

Rugby League - Michael Hancock Cup

The Year 9 Sports Excellence Rugby League team competed in the Michael Hancock Cup final against Coombabah High last Tuesday week in Brisbane. The Reds team won a thrilling contest 24-18.  We were down 12–0 after 15 minutes , but went to the break 12-6.  Soon after half time the boys were down 18-6 but then their fighting qualities kicked in. They clawed their way to get back to 18-all and a great conversion from the sideline took our team to a 20-18 lead, the first time they were in front throughout the game.  Another late try to the Reds to seal the win at 24-18.  It was a tough, gritty win by the Reds and the result was a great reward for the effort the boys have shown throughout the whole year. Throughout the year they have been positive, selfless and committed.  Qualities that are needed to win the big games.  It would be remiss of me not to mention that although I could only pick 17 for the Grand final, it was a whole squad effort and all have contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable year. I am very proud of this group and wish them well throughout their REDS journey !

Coach – Don Saunders

Rugby League - Broncos Old Boys Gala Day

The Year 7 sports excellence rugby league group has performed at an extremely high level this year. At the annual Broncos Old Boys Gala Day the Reds progressed through their pool only losing one game and defeating red hot favourites Marsden in the semi final thanks to some magic in the dying stages from Jackson Cook. The boys from PBC faced Forest Lake in the Broncos Old Boys Grand Final where they unfortunately went down by 8 points. The Reds showed great fighting spirit and their coaches are extremely proud of their effort throughout the entire competition. Clearly a smaller side the Reds played with great skill moving the ball to the edges and threatening the Forest Lake side on many occasions. Even though the boys did not win the Grand Final they are the first Year 7 team to make the Old Boys Grand Final - a fantastic achievement!

Coach - Will Johnstone

PBC Reds make Tennis State Finals!

PBC took strong teams of both boys and girls to the Regional round held at GCA Tennis Club. PBC Girls came through a nervous final match against Miami School to clinch their spot and the boys were able to beat a strong team from Somerset College in their final match to progress to the State Finals which will be held in Rockhampton during Week 10. Congratualtions to all students involved and good luck in Rocky!!!

Coach - Tim Hart

PBC proudly supports Daffodil Day in 2019

by Erin Woods, Student

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia. This year Cancer Council estimates that 145,000 people in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer, with that number set to rise to 150,000 next year. This year 50,000 Australian’s will die from cancer – that is almost 30% of Aussies diagnosed with cancer will die from the disease; so how do we reduce the death rate? We raise funds for research and that was again PBC’s commitment to Cancer Council and Aussies fighting cancer.

“Last year the students and staff of PBC supported Daffodil Day as it is a great cause and one that was very personal for a number of staff and students. Seeing the school in a sea of yellow was fantastic and the school community raised almost $1800” said PBC Executive principle Chris Capra.

On 23 August 2019, the students and staff of PBC again created a sea of yellow by dressing up for the day and donating a gold coin to support the Cancer Council’s most iconic and much-loved annual campaign Daffodil Day, which raises life-saving funds for world class cancer research. Daffodil Day is a time a hope: where we come together as a country to show our support for the 145,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer each year.

We know that every cent makes a real difference and so to entice donations, this year several major sporting icons donated raffle prizes including signed jerseys from Titans and Broncos and Rip Curl caps signed by our own number one world surfing champion and ex-PBC student Mick Fanning; plus two single day passes to Village Roadshow Theme Parks and two gold class movie tickets. Also available on the day thanks to a bunch of great, fun-loving teachers were freshly baked, yellow decorated cupcakes.

“Daffodil Day at PBC was incredible. It was a fun, memorable day to raise money for a cause that mattered” said PBC student and junior LEO Jaime Pryor. “Throughout the day I was involved in both a staff barbeque and selling cupcakes to students. These were both very well received with many people even donating with no want for a product in return. It was definitely a highlight to see our school community come together to support such a worthy charity and something I am proud to have been a part of.”

Last year PBC celebrated raising money to support Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day alongside their own Mrs Reid, however Deb sadly passed away on 1 June 2019, one year after her cancer diagnosis. PBC has a truly wonderful school community from Years 7 to 12 full of spirit, friendships, achievers and contributors. With help from the staff, the sporting icons of our nation, the team at Cancer Council and students like Jaime, PBC almost doubled last year’s funds, raising a total of $3,350 for the Cancer Council. PBC looks forward to doing their part again next year. Everyone is welcome to make a charitable donation to the Cancer Council by going to www.cancer.org.au.

School Based Youth Nurse

This term I have assisted Year 9 classes in their delivery of adolescent development and respectful relationships. They have been fun and engaging classes with more to come in Weeks 9 and 10.

Prior to the beginning class I asked students in a pre-survey who they could go to or ask for more information on these topics.

Of the 496 responses I received back 181 (or 36%) that stated they could ask “mum, dad, parents, or guardians.” This was by far the highest result.

I have attached a tip sheet designed for parents on how to talk about these sensitive issues with your teenagers. It's important to address questions as they arise.

If you need further help or don’t feel confident talking to your teens if they ask questions, then I am available for consultation to parents as well.

Your School Based Youth Health Nurse, Hilary

Everyone who lives near the bush, including those on city fringes, should prepare themselves, their families and their properties including preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan.

Support for depressed dads will help mums (and kids)

These days, we’re getting better at recognising and treating post-natal depression in mothers. But did you know that babies whose dads are depressed are more likely to develop behavioural problems? Doing a free Triple P — Positive Parenting Program can help everyone be happier. Find out more and support each other: www.triplep-parenting.net

SER Music ‘Hub’

South East Region Music Office is the ‘Hub’ that supports 105 instrumental music teachers and 155 classroom music teachers across the South East Region. The Regional Music Coordinator and leadership team support teachers with coordination of workshops, camps, performances, wellbeing, corporate support, publicity and media coverage for our region’s music students, curriculum and pedagogical support and instrumental teacher placement.

The Instrumental Teachers in the region are allocated to schools to implement the instrumental music curriculum through lessons and ensembles. The overarching purpose of the instrumental music program is to provide students with the opportunity to become musicians and experience the expressive qualities of music through learning to play a band or orchestral instrument. Engagement in the program will improve the quality of perception and self-expression by fostering the acquisition of music skills, thereby increasing aesthetic sensibility, cultural awareness and social – emotional engagement. Through the lens of music, students are empowered to make sense of their world.
