PBC proudly supports Daffodil Day in 2019
by Erin Woods, Student
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia. This year Cancer Council estimates that 145,000 people in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer, with that number set to rise to 150,000 next year. This year 50,000 Australian’s will die from cancer – that is almost 30% of Aussies diagnosed with cancer will die from the disease; so how do we reduce the death rate? We raise funds for research and that was again PBC’s commitment to Cancer Council and Aussies fighting cancer.
“Last year the students and staff of PBC supported Daffodil Day as it is a great cause and one that was very personal for a number of staff and students. Seeing the school in a sea of yellow was fantastic and the school community raised almost $1800” said PBC Executive principle Chris Capra.
On 23 August 2019, the students and staff of PBC again created a sea of yellow by dressing up for the day and donating a gold coin to support the Cancer Council’s most iconic and much-loved annual campaign Daffodil Day, which raises life-saving funds for world class cancer research. Daffodil Day is a time a hope: where we come together as a country to show our support for the 145,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer each year.
We know that every cent makes a real difference and so to entice donations, this year several major sporting icons donated raffle prizes including signed jerseys from Titans and Broncos and Rip Curl caps signed by our own number one world surfing champion and ex-PBC student Mick Fanning; plus two single day passes to Village Roadshow Theme Parks and two gold class movie tickets. Also available on the day thanks to a bunch of great, fun-loving teachers were freshly baked, yellow decorated cupcakes.
“Daffodil Day at PBC was incredible. It was a fun, memorable day to raise money for a cause that mattered” said PBC student and junior LEO Jaime Pryor. “Throughout the day I was involved in both a staff barbeque and selling cupcakes to students. These were both very well received with many people even donating with no want for a product in return. It was definitely a highlight to see our school community come together to support such a worthy charity and something I am proud to have been a part of.”
Last year PBC celebrated raising money to support Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day alongside their own Mrs Reid, however Deb sadly passed away on 1 June 2019, one year after her cancer diagnosis. PBC has a truly wonderful school community from Years 7 to 12 full of spirit, friendships, achievers and contributors. With help from the staff, the sporting icons of our nation, the team at Cancer Council and students like Jaime, PBC almost doubled last year’s funds, raising a total of $3,350 for the Cancer Council. PBC looks forward to doing their part again next year. Everyone is welcome to make a charitable donation to the Cancer Council by going to www.cancer.org.au.
