From the Executive Principal,
After a year away working for Central Office on the School Resourcing Review project (first time in 38 years that school funding has been reviewed) it is fantastic to be back at PBC. Travelling the state and working across the regions has reinforced to me that PBC is a great school which has much to be proud of.
The school celebrated NAIDOC week with a special assembly and by participating in community events on Wednesday and Friday. The assembly was well attended by local community and our student performances and messaging to their peers were well received. We were honoured to be the only group invited to perform at a significant cultural celebration late in the week. Congratulations to Trish and all the staff and students who made the week so successful.
Gold Coast South Sports is coming up as is Eisteddfod season. Please check our socials for dates and times.
The School Opinion Survey for 2024 has been released to parents. Please see the article below for your opportunity to have your say about your school.
School Opinion Survey
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (Years 8 and 11).
The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation will be emailed in the week beginning 15 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2024.
Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey. The survey is anonymous, and the results are reported in ways that an individual’s response cannot be identified by the school.
Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection. Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mitch Kennedy, Deputy Principal 11/12, at mkenn178@eq.edu.au

Welcome back to all students and families to Semester 2 - in what is certain to be a busy time. Term 3 brings with it a range of events across all areas of the school as well as culmination of studies for our Year 11's and 12's, along with the all-important SET-planning process as our Year 10's select their senior pathway.
A special congratulations to our all students who have been invited to our Mid-Year Senior OPTIMA Awards coming up on Tuesday 30th July. Achieving an award of this nature for academic, cultural or sporting prowess is no small feat in Senior School as students balance their ever-increasing extra-curricular demands. We look forward to welcoming the families of award recipients and celebrating students' achievements for the final time this year.
Congratulations to our budding comedians who are taking place in the next Reds Go Riot on Wednesday 31st July in our Theatre (Adi Bhandari & Emma Suttle - Year 12, Annabelle Harvey & Owen Browne - Year 11 and Carter Lucas - Year 10). This event is always a calendar highlight and is not to be missed!
YEAR 10
Year 10 students have now reached the point in their Senior Schooling where we are asking them to plan their pathway, including subjects, for Year 11 and 12. This is called SET Planning.
To help in making the best possible choices we strongly encourage you and your student to attend an information evening for all Year 10 families. The aim of the evening is to receive essential information on Senior Pathways as well as have the opportunity to tour our faculties and speak directly to subject teachers about the subjects on offer. In addition, a variety of representatives including Griffith Uni, Southern Cross Uni, Gold Coast TAFE, Gold Coast Trades College and Prestige Training Services will be available to answer any questions you have regarding a wide range of certificates and courses on offer.
Please monitor your emails as a range of resources and invites will be emailed to year 10 parents and students in the coming weeks.
YEAR 12
- It is certainly a busy time for Year 12s with the finalisation of their third internal assessment item (IA3) and preparations for External assessment in General subjects and IA4 Applied subjects.
- Year 12 General Maths and Math Methods students will have their third internal exam during the week commencing July 29.
- Year 12's will be sent a cumulative report of their results for Unit 3 and 4 in the week beginning August 12. This will be the last report that Year 12 students will receive from PBC as final exit level of achievement and results are determined by the QCAA. Students are again reminded that they must complete all assessment to receive a result in a subject; for instance, if a student does not complete an assignment/project they will not attain a result; this will also affect their QCE eligibility.
- All Year 12 students will have shutdown exams in weeks 9 and 10 of this term to complete Mock External assessment and Applied subject assessment.
YEAR 11
Year 11 students are currently completing unit 2. English and Economics have exams in week2.
Year 11s will then have their final Unit 2 assessment block in the last week of this term. This will be a full week of shutdown.
This is a busy time for these students and ensuring your student has appropriate time management skills and is prioritising school work will help students to maximise their results.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION of DATA (NCCD)
The NCCD collects data in a consistent, reliable and systematic way about school students with disability who are receiving adjustments across Australia. It enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can be best supported at school. The NCCD collection period is now open and closes 2 August, 2024. Schools count the number of students receiving reasonable adjustments under the four categories of physical, cognitive, sensory and social/emotional and allocates the level of adjustment that reflects the type of support the student receives (i.e quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary adjustments, substantial adjustment or extensive adjustment).
There is no parent consent required for students to be included in the NCCD, as the school provides data to the government in such a way that no individual student is able to be identified. In this way privacy and confidentially of all students is ensured.
If you have any questions about the NCCD please visit:

Whoever coined the term ‘Every Day Counts’ must have been a mathematics teacher. Consider the mathematics curriculum as bricks; each year we lay down a new layer, building on prior knowledge. Absences are missing bricks – next year the foundation to support it won’t be as strong. Our teachers work diligently to ensure every math lesson is purposeful and supports the development numeracy capability.
Please prompt your child to do a quick stocktake of their equipment. Whether it be needing new notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers or a calculator your child will not be as successful as they could be if they were properly prepared for each lesson.
A note about calculators. Students are expected to have their own scientific calculator for all Maths lessons. Casio is the preferred model (Model FX82 Plus II 2nd Edition - see image below) at PBC, but any scientific calculator is acceptable.
Read LessPBC has now had the compartmentalised bins in the playground for three terms. These allow students to sort and separate their waste, enabling us to recycle, compost and cash in as much waste as possible, reducing the volume of waste we send to landfill. This has already made a significant impact on our waste collection bills. In May and June of 2024, sorting and separating our waste reduced the volume we sent to landfill by approximately 50% compared to May and June of 2023, saving us more than $5,000 in the process. By the end of June 2023, we had spent more than $25,000 on waste collection bills for the year. By the same time this year, we have only spent a little over $16,000. In that time, we have also earned $3,350 from the Container Refund Scheme and diverted more than 4,000kg of food waste from landfill, creating compost that we donated to the Southern Beaches Community Garden at Tugun.
The line graph illustrates the reduction in the number of general waste bins we send to landfill each week. In May of 2023, we sent 426 240L wheelie bins of rubbish to landfill. In May of 2024, it was only 201 bins. In June of 2023, we sent 316 240L wheelie bins to landfill, while June of 2024 saw us reduce that number to only 133.
While the above waste reductions are encouraging, this is just the beginning and we can do even better for the rest of 2024 and beyond. We have an incredible team of people working to collect and sort waste to make sure we send even less to landfill in the future. Please encourage your student to help PBC become even greener by:
- Using reusable containers rather than single-use packaging like cling wrap for their lunches
- Taking the time to place their waste into the appropriate bin compartment (food waste, CRS-eligible beverage containers, recyclables and general waste)
- Bringing their own cutlery to school rather than using single-use items from the canteen
- Putting rubbish in the bin rather than leaving it on the ground
We all have a role to play in reducing waste. A small amount of effort from every individual at PBC makes a big difference overall.

This year the NAIDOC theme encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage and assert our place in the modern world. This theme calls for a reclamation of narratives, an amplification of voices, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality. It invites all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of Indigenous peoples are fully valued and respected.
Our schools NAIDOC ceremony celebrated NAIDOC week by hosting an assembly for students and community members. Aunty Joyce Summers (our local community elder) was accompanied by her great granddaughter, Year 12 student Tayah Chilcott to deliver a powerful Acknowledgement to Country.
Our Audience was treated to very special performances from ‘Jaran’ Torres Strait Islander Dance Troupe and our very own PBC ‘Ginbi’ Aboriginal girls Dance Troupe.
We also acknowledged and congratulated the 37 First Nations Year 12 students on Track to graduate year 12 in 2024.
Murri Jarjums and Clontarf staff, along with our First Nations Students and Community members all met after our assembly for morning tea and to highlight and share the achievements of our students so far this year.

The difference between good stress and the toxic kind
Toxic stress, on the other hand, wears down your stress response system in ways that have lasting effects, as psychiatrist and trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk explains in his bestselling book “The Body Keeps the Score.”
The earliest effects of toxic stress are often persistent symptoms such as headache, fatigue or abdominal pain that interfere with overall functioning. After months of initial symptoms, a full-blown illness with a life of its own – such as migraine headaches, asthma, diabetes or ulcerative colitis – may surface.
When we are healthy, our stress response systems are like an orchestra of organs that miraculously tune themselves and play in unison without our conscious effort – a process called self-regulation. But when we are sick, some parts of this orchestra struggle to regulate themselves, which causes a cascade of stress-related dysregulation that contributes to other conditions.
For instance, in the case of diabetes, the hormonal system struggles to regulate sugar. With obesity, the metabolic system has a difficult time regulating energy intake and consumption. With depression, the central nervous system develops an imbalance in its circuits and neurotransmitters that makes it difficult to regulate mood, thoughts and behaviours.
How stress affects your brain- Madhumita Murgia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuyPuH9ojCE&t=51
Recognising and managing stress and its associated conditions
The first step to managing stress is to recognise it and talk to your primary care clinician about it. The clinician may do an assessment involving a self-reported measure of stress.
The next step is treatment. Research shows that it is possible to retrain a dysregulated stress response system. This approach, called “lifestyle medicine”, focuses on improving health outcomes through changing high-risk health behaviours and adopting daily habits that help the stress response system self-regulate.
Adopting these lifestyle changes is not quick or easy, but it works (especially if consistently applied over a 9–12-month timeframe). Practicing personal regimens of stress management, diet and exercise in ways that build and sustain their new habits (i.e., such as meditation, deep breathing, walking, swimming, being aware of your surroundings).
There is now strong evidence that it is possible to treat toxic stress in ways that improve health outcomes for people with stress-related conditions. The next steps include finding ways to expand the recognition of toxic stress and, for those affected, to expand access to these new and effective approaches to treatment.

Positive Culture for Learning
"Be respectful" is one of the three elements of the PBC OPTIMA Code. Across the school, students can tell you that at this school, we are to 'Be safe, be respectful, be a learner.' Yet our behaviour data tells us that disrespect is the most frequently recorded behavious issue at PBC.
PBC is a 'PCL' school - we are practicing a Positive Culture for Learning. This body of work is led by a comittee of leaders, teacher aides, welfare support and parents. One core philiosophy of PCL that positive behavious needs to be actively taught, just like any other skill, and frequently acknowledged. This week, CARE teachers across the school are teaching about respect, and how it is displayed through our language choices and beahviour. The process of teaching includes discussion and role modelling. As young people move out into the world, respectful beahviour will help them as employees, community members and citizens. The PCL committee will be seeking feedback from teachers on their lessons, and hope to see improvements in respectful behaviour across the term.

Saver Plus Program
Camps are an amazing opportunity for your students. But they can be stressful for some parents to afford.
Saver Plus encourages parents to save $50 a month (for 10 months). Savings are then matched - a free $500 for education costs, making $1,000 potentially available for the school camp.
Families that start saving in July, will have their savings ready to pay their school camp fees in May 2025.
If there are families that don’t have students attending camp they may also still apply for the program and allocate the funds to other education costs.
Saver Plus will chat with your families about eligibility:
- Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card
- Payment from Centrelink and
- Earning an income (employment, carer’s payment, or child support).
If families would like to check their eligibility and receive a call back please include our enquiry link - https://www.bsl.org.au/services/saving-and-managing-money/saver-plus/ or they’re welcome to call our national number 1300 610 355 and a local coordinator will contact them directly.
