Executive Principal's Message
From the Executive Principal,
This newsletter piece is targeted at our wonderful staff. It is difficult to select just a few to highlight so I went to our “Staff member of the week” colleague nominations. Each week staff identify those who go “above and beyond” in their role. Here are five of these.
- Tegan Wilmott: Tegan is the cog in the wheel that ensures our Junior School Student Services runs smoothly. She is loved by both students and colleagues alike and goes above and beyond, all day every day, to help out students and staff
- Brittni Pearce: Brittni is the front face of PBC and chances are if you call or visit main administration, Brittni will look after you. Every interaction she has with parents, students and staff is always friendly and positive. She is a generous, kind-hearted person who goes above & beyond to support staff, students & families.
- Justin Hart: Justin is one of our amazing Instrumental Music Teachers and always strives to ensure the Instrumental Music Program at PBC is amazing and every student is made to feel special. Nothing is ever too much trouble!
- Krista I’Anson: Our Head of Year 12 provides superb leadership and guidance to this cohort and our student leaders.
- Tom Pasley: Tom selflessly donates a huge amount of his personal time to be PBC’s Sustainability Champion (as well as an awesome teacher). PBC and the environment can’t thank him enough for all that he does.
Over the last two weeks we have celebrated the wonderful achievements of our students at Optima Awards ceremonies. Congratulations to all students who received awards.

We are now halfway through Term 1 of 2024 and congratulate all Senior Students on their commencement to the year, in what has been a typically busy start! Congratulations to all students of whom we were able to acknowledge at the recent Senior School OPTIMA Awards, recognising their superb achievements over the back end of 2023.
We wish all students the best of luck in upcoming assessment periods, with Year 11's undergoing a partial exam shutdown in Week 8 as well as Year 10 and 12 going on a full exam shutdown in Week 10 of this term.
Senior School Support Staffing Changes
We welcome back to the Senior School Ms Alyce Bradford who this weeks returns to her role as Principal - Senior Secondary after a stint as Principal of Miami State High. We also thank Mr Cameron Williams for his guidance and support of the Year 10 cohort as he moves back into his role within the Junior School Leadership team. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any Senior School support staff member to seek information or to assist your student. A complete list can be found here:

The Wedding Singer
A final shout-out to the superb cast, teaching team, musicians and support crew involved with our 2024 School Musical, The Wedding Singer. PBC are renowned in the Gold Coast community for producing school musicals of an amazing quality and epic proportions, and this one will certainly deliver ten-fold on that legacy. Congratulations to all involved in this show which has seen hundreds of extra hours dedicated to it.
There are still tickets available to come and see this amazing show, with dates running across the 7th, 8th and 9th of March. Please purchase these from Eventbrite - click the folowing links
Assessment
Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au. Click on the curriculum tab and then under testing and assessment. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.
Year 11
The Year 11 partial shutdown timetable has been uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au and made available for students on the student notices. These exams will take place on Thursday and Friday (week 8) and Monday (week 9).
This is not a full shutdown, in order to maximise learning opportunities in the classroom, meaning students must attend all scheduled classes on these days, as per their timetable, unless they have an exam scheduled. If an exam finishes during class time, students are required to return to their timetabled classes.
Read LessWeek 10 new units will commence
Week 10 will be a normal school week and as such we ask families to plan for their child to be in attendance as classes will be starting new work.
Term 1 Interim Reports
Student Term 1 Interim Reports will be emailed home on 28/03/23.
Term 1 reports are interim reports. This means that they will indicate a child’s Term 1 achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject.
Please ensure that the email address we have recorded for you is current to ensure you receive your child’s report.
We encourage you to follow up on this report by attending Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 2 / Week 4 (7th to 9th May - 3:15pm to 8pm in the Hall). Information about how to book Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent with the Interim reports.
School Photo Day
For parents signed up to QParents with consent forms the School Photo Days are:
8th March, 13th March, 14th March (Catch up).
Monday Early Finish Rationale
It is important to note that no curriculum time is lost with the 1.20pm finish time on a Monday. Curriculum hours have been maintained for each subject. This time was created through the removal of the repeat/additional period in the timetable which arose when weekly school sport was not available on the Gold Coast as schools moved to a cluster model to maximise student learning days.
Although there is no expectation that students attend on a Monday afternoon, should they want to or need to both supervision and tutors are provided in B Block. An average of approximately 40 (mostly Year 7 students) are booked for supervision on Monday afternoons at the request of parents.
This change has enabled students to:
- Study independently either at home or at school in our library precinct;
- Access tutors to assist with their school work in our library precinct;
- Catch up on lesson content that they have missed whilst on vocational placements or other extra-curricular activities;
- Complete their vocational placements; Undertake part-time work, sports training or other commitments.
This change has enabled staff to:
- Work collaboratively to improve curriculum and unit planning;
- Analyse student data and better cater for individuals.
Optima Assembly
Last week we had the pleasure of gathering to celebrate the achievements of our Year 8 cohort. This Optima Assembly recognised outstanding application to school during Semester 2 of 2023, as well as academic, sporting, community and cultural achievements. We would like to further thank all families who were in attendance at this assembly and to all students another whole-hearted congratulations on your achievements.

In week 3, the Musical Cast and Creative Team travelled by bus to Alexandra Headlands and participated in two night/three day workshops. The camp was hugely productive, we got the show ‘back on the road” after 6 weeks of holidays.
Amongst a strenuous rehearsal schedule we had some down time which included a movie night watching the “Wedding Singer” and also an evening designing brides and bridesmaid dresses (out of toilet paper and crepe paper) for our “PBC 80’s Bridal Fashion Week”, The camp was so much fun and the team is so excited for Opening Night this Thursday 7th March. ARTS SPOTLIGHT - 2024 Musical Lead Actors
Drama Excellence
Our Drama excellence students have hit the ground running. They have had two guest workshops with Acting Coach Errenn from Zia Zag Theatre. They have also started their new unit ‘Acting for screen”. This is a newly designed program by Ms Skyring which has only launched this year.
By the end of the term, students will have completed one self-taped and one professionally taped Monologue/screen reel of two contrasting Monologues. Students will also have their Headshot taken (one black and white, one in colour) for their audition portfolio.
Our goal at PBC is to give our students real work acting experience to ensure they are industry ready and equipped with the right tools to ensure they can confidently audition either on line or face to face for any acting/theatre/screen roles on the Gold Coast or Acting Agency.
Next week the class will catch a bus to “The Warehouse Screen Acting Studio” in Helensvale and participate in a full day/five-hour workshop.
Their Acting Coach will discuss:
§ Critical differences between stage and screen performances
§ The film industry in general including how casting decisions get made
§ The film and TV industry hierarchy (Who’s who and what they do)
§ Headshots
§ Showreels
§ Agents
§ Casting Platforms and Profiles
Students will engage in full body and vocal warmups and improvisational activities. All students will be provided with a short script prior to the program. Each group will perform their scenes on set in a close up shot. Which all students can watch on the screens provided. They will also be provided with acting feedback on the spot for them to implement in a second take.
The drama students will be travelling to Brisbane, QPAC playhouse to see the play “Gaslight”. This award-winning play is a gripping play and will be a thrilling theatrical experience.
The class (with year 9 dance and Year 7 Music excellence) will also be attending Beauty and the Beast – The Musical at QPAC, Lyric Theatre.
Dance Excellence
This term, Dance Excellence students work with esteemed choreographers for class
routines used in assessments and competitions. From Year 7 to 12, each class
benefits from professional guests, many which are alumni of our program.
Our program will feature the following guest artists and choreographers.
· Year 7 - Amara Ezzy (PNC Alumni)
· Year 8 - Tiani Cashel-Patterson (PBC Alumni)
· Year 9 - Heidi Jennings
· Year 10 - Mackenzie Jade (PBC Alumni)
· Year 11 - Rachel Dowse
· Year 11/12 - Shannon Atkins
These diverse and internationally renowned choreographers challenge and showcase our students.
Exciting news awaits as we prepare for our Hip-Hop combined super team. This will be choreographed by Shante Rae. Auditions are complete, and training began on Sunday February 25th. Additional Super Teams, including lyrical and jazz groups, are slated for later in the semester. All the best for students who are auditioning for these prestigious and high performing teams.
CAX Alumni Spotlight
Cleo Lewis (2020 Dance Excellence Graduate) is back home for a brief Holliday. She has been living in Paris for three years and has just recently been granted the role as the “Lead principal Dancer” for the Moulin Rouge. She is the YOUNGEST EVER Principal dancer in the history of the Moulin Rouge. We are so incredibly proud of our Cleo. She will be back home to PBC this week teaching technique classes to our Junior Dance Excellence students and Showgirl Masterclass with our Senior Dance Excellence students. Cleo will also be a gyest speaker at our upcoming Alliance Breakfast sharing her success ad story with the community.
Visual Arts Excellence
The Visual Arts Excellence program is designed to give students a variety of
art making experiences across the disciplines of drawing, painting,
printmaking, and three-dimensional art. At the halfway point of term one, the
Visual Arts Excellence students have been working towards their major
projects, through related activities and experimenting with techniques and
processes.
The Year 7 Art Excellence students are working on their major artwork based
on an endangered species. They started the term completing activities that
considered tonal drawing techniques and processes, before moving on to
putting their new skills into practice.
In Year 8, the Visual Art Excellence students have been completing a series of
tonal drawing activities that will strengthen skills needed to complete a flat lay
still life drawing. A flat lay still life is a contemporary take on the traditional still
life that most people would be familiar with.
9 Art Excellence students’ drawing unit consists of experimenting with various
media that will support choices that they make in a portrait of significant
person in their lives. This unit of work is based around the Archibald Prize for
portraiture. If students wish to, they can submit their final artwork for the
Young Archies, the student version of the Archibald Prize.
Finally, Year 10 Art Excellence students have been experimenting with
processes and techniques, with a variety of media, that will allow them to
complete a major artwork that is an alternative way of seeing a public place.
Students are just starting their major artwork, and have chosen interesting
ways of working, and appealing public places.
Music Excellence
Music Excellence is off to a flying start for 2024 with many up-and-coming exciting opportunities for
students, including:
· Year 7 excursion to QPAC, Brisbane to see Beauty and the Beast
· Student involvement in upcoming Surf Film festival “Flotsam”
· Involvement in the upcoming whole school musical ‘The Wedding Singer’,
· Year 9 Music Excellence students entering in the Byron Bay Bluesfest Busking Competition
With our rehearsal spaces and recording studio constantly being fitted-out with the very best inudstry equipment, our students are better equipped than ever for a wonderful year ahead of music making.
Our Year 7’s have begun their fundamental music studies, as well as preparation for their group debut
performance at the Junior Excellence Showcase,
Year 8 is studying and pushing boundaries with the incorporation of music technology in their performances.
Year 9’s are delving deeper into the study of Musicals and the importance of music in productions, while our Seniors are working hard on their independent performances and compositions for their senior assessment pieces.
We can’t wait to share more student work and performances as the year progresses from our very strong, talented and dedicated cohort.
Loren Skyring, Head of the Arts & Creative Arts Excellence

Science club started back week 3, with students conducting activities investigating forces and air pressure to further examine how fluids impact movement. Students have looked at Bernoulli’s Principle, the Coanda effect, and Newton’s Third Law by participating in fun activities such as trying to blow out a candle around corners, observations when blowing on paper, and measuring balloon rocket motion. Next, Clubbers will start looking at flight, with a paper plane competition in week 10. Science club runs each Thursday during lunch 1 in E2, so new students are always welcome to come along and join in on the fun.
Tonie Carroll Cup
Congratulations to our Year 7 Boys Rugby League Team who finished 3rd in their pool at the Tonie Carroll Cup last Thursday. The boys played 5 games in very hot 38 degree conditions at Bill Norris Oval in Beenleigh. Coach Aaron Zimmerle was very proud of the courage and character that the boys showed in the stifling conditions and against some very intimidating opponents. Unfortunately we suffered a few injuries with Junior’s broken foot being the worst. The good news is the boys have successfully qualified for the Yr 7 Broncos Cup Competition, which consists of the top 8 schools in South East QLD. The boys now know the level that they must compete at and after they recover from this tournament, we have 6 weeks to prepare for round 1. Thank you also to all the parents who travelled out to support your boys.

Tools to Manage Dopamine & Motivation- Part 1
Dopamine is a molecule in the brain and body that is closely linked to our sense of motivation. It can also enhance our depth of focus and lower our threshold for taking action toward specific goals.
The simplest way to think about dopamine is that when our dopamine levels are elevated, we tend to focus our attention on outward goals — the things we want — and we feel motivated to pursue them. “Dopamine is about wanting, not about having,” said Dr. Anna Lembke, a professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences and the chief of the Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford, and she is 100% correct.
Contrast that with serotonin, which is associated not so much with “wanting” but with feelings of well-being about what we already have. These are generalisations of course — dopamine and serotonin do other things too, but they are accurate, nonetheless.
It is hard to overstate how much dopamine levels shape our perception of life, our emotions, and how capable we perceive ourselves to be — when dopamine levels are low, we feel unmotivated, derive less pleasure from pursuits and feel physically tired.
Part I: Managing Dopamine to Sustain Motivation
We have a baseline of dopamine, and it can spike or drop based on various actions, compounds we ingest or even our thoughts. Our baseline dopamine levels are influenced by many factors, including genetics, behaviours, sleep, nutrition and the level of dopamine you experienced on previous days. It is critically important to maintain sufficient levels of baseline dopamine to sustain day-to-day motivation. We don’t want the baseline too low or too high.
We can establish a healthy level of baseline dopamine by:
- Viewing early morning sunlight for 10-30 minutes daily. (Don’t wear sunglasses for this, and don’t stare at the sun; eyeglasses and contacts are acceptable). This causes the release of dopamine. If done consistently, it will also increase levels of gene expression for certain dopamine receptors. If you’re up to it, take a 1-3 minute cold shower, as cold as you can safely tolerate, as well; this is known to increase baseline dopamine for hours dramatically.
- Eat tyrosine-rich foods such as red meats, nuts or hard fermented cheese. Tyrosine is an amino acid and a building block of dopamine — a diet rich in tyrosine will sustain your body’s natural dopamine production. You’ll need to consider the caloric and other contents of these foods, of course. It’s easy to find plant-based sources too. Simply do a web search for them.
- Avoid melatonin supplements, as these can decrease dopamine levels and can disrupt your normal sleep patterns.
- Avoid viewing bright lights between 10 p.m.-4 a.m. This is essential, as it has been shown to activate a brain region called the habenula and drastically reduce the amount of circulating dopamine in your system. If you must view light at these times, make it very dim. Once in a while is okay, but don’t make it a habit.
- Ingest caffeine (approximately 100-400mg) in the form of coffee, tea or whatever form you prefer. This will cause a mild increase in dopamine but also increases the availability of dopamine receptors, so your body is more sensitive to circulating dopamine. Don’t do this too close to sleep. I avoid caffeine after 2 p.m., with rare exceptions.

Kicking off with a City of Gold Coast update from Mr Ross Devine, the audience will be informed on the development of the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre and what the re-development of the centre will bring to the area.
The theme of the breakfast will take a turn towards the Performing Arts, encompassing an enlightening update on all things showbiz with our very own Ms Loren Skyring, featuring guest speaker Ex-Alumni turned professional dancer Ms Cleo Lewis, to beguile us with her enchanting stories from Paris and her time at Moulin Rouge. Prepare to then be entertained by our very own Cast of the PBC Musical Production of The Wedding Singer, with an exclusive performance by Griffin Light-Law (who plays Robbie Hart) and Isla Freer (who plays Julia Gulia).
