Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.jpgThe last two years has seen many events cancelled.  Hardest hit in terms of performing outside of school has been the Creative Arts students.  Whilst the school has found ways to allow our Arts Students to shine, there have been no external competitions, until last week.  Dani McGlynn has provided a more in-depth report inside the newsletter, however I just wanted to say, well done to the students and staff involved in the GC Fanfare last week winning 3 Platinum Awards, a Gold Award and a Bronze Award.

The school will celebrate 50 years of education on Saturday with a Gala Day and the Ultimate Reunion Sunset soiree.  More information is available with this newsletter and across our social media platforms. We look forward to welcoming alumni and the whole community on Saturday.

Congratulations to the Chaplaincy Committee, led by Mary Ellen Klem, who last week ran two events that raised over $5000 to ensure that we can continue our Chaplain John at his current supporting students four days a week.

The PBC Alliance had another sold out breakfast on Friday. It was great to hear Anthony Ikin’s (PBC Hall of Fame) inspirational story about his career, which has taken him around the world and the adversity that he has had to overcome. In addition, we heard from Lillian and the staff from Tallebudgera Outdoor Education Centre and the program that they run to support teenage girls navigate through personal trauma and adversity called Braving the Wilderness.   I would also like to acknowledge and thank Michael Hart MP – Burleigh for committing to sponsor the upcoming camp after hearing Lillian's story.

Growing Good Humans

Over the last two weeks Growing Good Humans (GGH) sessions with Paul Bullpitt and Anna Wyatt were offered to our Year 7 students. These sessions explored and provided participants with skills for physical-mental-social teaching with a focus on body awareness, emotional awareness and self-awareness. Students participated in activities of identifying situations, using our body clues, in which they have felt anxious and/or angry. They were also provided with a variety of relaxation tools to assist with self-regulation. Year 7 students will participate in further GGH sessions in term 3.

Behaviour and Effort

As a measure to address and improve Junior Secondary student effort and behaviour, Heads of Year and Junior Secondary Head of Department for Student Engagement have developed and began to run Effort and Behaviour: Re-focus program sessions with students. These sessions are designed to create a supportive and non-adversarial environment for students to acknowledge areas that they can improve both their effort and behaviour. Students are provided with a framework for improvement and work collaboratively with their peers and support staff to create their own improvement plans, which are shared with their parents and classroom teachers. Follow up meetings will be held in Term 3 to acknowledge improvement and to hold students accountable to their own measures of success.

As Term 2 draws to a close, thankyou to all PBC families and students for their engagement and dedication in what can be a very busy place. We look forward to seeing many of our alumni and existing families at our 50th Year Gala Day Celebration this Saturday, servicing many memories and paying tribute to our school which has (and continues to) grow and excel. Senior students are entering a very busy phase of academic rigour and opportunities in both the sporting and cultural landscapes - in may fields it is the first occasion since pre-COVID - we wish all of our students the best of success during this busy time.

Year 12

Year 12 Exam Shutdown will commence from Wednesday 22 June up to and including Friday 24 June (Week 10). Shutdown calendars are now published on the PBC website under Testing and Assessment.

Year 12 ATAR students had the opportunity to a mentoring session this week to discuss their progress in General subjects and their ATAR range. A range of study support sessions are available for Year 12 students to help them maximise their results. These are also published here:

Year 11

Please note there is no exam shutdown for Year 11 students, with normal timetabled classes running until the rest of Term. As students are in the middle of an assessment unit, these lessons will be vital. Due to the compressed nature of the Year 11 curriculum all Year 11 students will have assignment tasks and exams to study for over the holidays.

Year 11 End of Unit 1 subject reports have recently been emailed to parents. The Senior schooling team will begin monitoring the academic performance of students in this cohort to ensure that they are on track to attain the QCE. Students can still change classes up to Friday June 10, though there is limited timetable availability. Any Year 11 student that wishes to change classes should come to Y Block as soon as possible.

Year 10

Year 10 students will have shutdown for exams in Week 10. Exams will be scheduled from Monday 20 June up to and including Friday 24 June (Week 10). Students in Year 10 are again reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 Semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve B's in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in Year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

Study Skills Opportunities

PBC, in partnership with Griffith University are offering a number of upcoming opportunities in Term 3 for students to engage with:

Year 10: 2-part life skills, strengths and career opportunities session

  • Term 3, 18 and 25 July (Weeks 2 and 3)

Monday afternoon (1:55pm-3:05pm) - Please encourage your student to remain at school for these sessions

In the current workforce, entrepreneurial skills such as innovation, agility, and problem-solving are crucial for success. This two-part workshop series helps students develop a mindset that can adapt to change, be resilient, and thrive in the future workforce. Students will explore a social impact issue that aligns with their passions to support the development of the skills highlighted in this workshop.

Part 2 of the workshop builds on the work done in Part 1. Students will collaborate in small groups to apply and practise the skills they have developed in innovation, agility and problem solving to solve a social impact issue.

The aim of these workshops is for students to discover their strengths to build a fulfilling career and assist with SET planning choices.

Year 11/12: Griffith University On-Campus experience

  • Term 3, 10 August (week 5 – GC5 sport day)

Wednesday 8:30am – 3:00pm (buses provided leaving and returning to PBC)

Students are required to collect and return a signed permission form to Y block as soon as possible as numbers are limited.

This free experience provides students a practical opportunity to explore the campus and experience specific industries based on interest areas. School students will engage with tertiary students from similar backgrounds who have overcome barriers into higher education, and be provided support in creating plans to meet requirements in their chosen field of study. This day includes:

  • a leadership and careers workshop
  • networking with academics and current students
  • tailored discipline-specific workshops.

This experience has been organised for PBC students and highly recommended for those who are university-bound or considering university as an option in the future.

The link below is an academic paper on improving study techniques amongst students, which may be useful when parents are discussing the best way to prepare for external exams. Note late night cramming whilst listening to music has been proven not to be effective: CLICK HERE

Creative Generation GOMA Exhibition

The opening of Creative Generation at GOMA on 28 May.  PBC has three works from last year’s cohort hanging in the Gallery of Modern Art; These are by Ryan Thwaite, Allie Baldwin and Gabriella Kilgariff

In addition to the absolutely fantastic feat of having three students representing PBC, Allie’s work won the Sponsor’s Choice Award.

Year 12 Trivia Night

Wednesday 18 May saw the Year 12's take on Trivia Night!

From Grandma's to T-Rex’s, Year 12’s went all out in their team’s costuming.

The night was hosted by Mr Johnstone and Mr Patison, which saw students up on the dance floor, taking part in the limbo comp, and most importantly easing students’ competitive sides in trivia Kahoot!

Trivia enthusiasts were on the edge of their seats during the raffle announcements, thanks to Grip Star Socks, Snap Fitness Palm Beach, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Annabel Trends, Palm Beach Surf Club and Meatsmiths! who all donated prizes to support our school charity.

Overall, a great night had by all and thanks for a great turnout Year 12’s!

Jersey Day

IMG_0574.JPG

On Friday 3 June, PBC held a free dress day themed 'Jersey Day.' Organised by the student council, the idea originated to support 'You Choose', which is an organisation with a mission to change driving habits. At the start of the year, You Choose founders Melissa and Peter McGuinness visited PBC and did a thought-provoking presentation detailing the choices of their 18-year-old son, Jordan, a PBC alumni who was speeding whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs (in 2012). He drove his car into a stationary vehicle, tragically killing five young victims including himself. During the presentation, Melissa wore his year 12 senior jersey, resulting in us calling the event, 'Jersey Day'.

Students wore free dress and brought a gold coin donation to support the organisation and were encouraged to wear a jersey of their choice. The day was a huge success, and $1455.55 was raised overall. We are so glad that we could support You Choose. The impact of the presentation has made us consider that our actions can protect ourselves, our families and our communities from the preventable misery of road youth trauma.

ATSIAP Challenge - Senior Secondary Division

Four of our Aboriginal students competed in an academic challenge arranged through the Department of Education. The students had to compose a poem, a speech and an artwork based on this year's NAIDOC theme, "Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up!". The students consulted with a Community Elder, Aunty Joyce Summers, and decided to focus on the Stolen Generation.

Shaylee Borg, Tayah Chilcott, Bryony Luppi and Will Mann (all Year 10) entered the senior division against other Year 10, 11 and 12 students from the region. They worked hard under pressure to complete these tasks and were awarded 2nd place. We are now off to a 2-day event and competition at the University of Queensland to compete against other teams from all over the state.

Well done to these students and we wish them the best at the State Final.

PBC Alliance Business Breakfast

IMG_0558.JPG

Friday 3 June, the PBC Alliance held its Term 2 Breakfast. Our wonderful hospitality staff and students prepared a delicious breakfast for our guests.

Guest speakers included Allan Merlehan from the Community Bank Tugun (Bendigo Bank), a great supporter of our local community and our students and school. We also heard from Anthony Ikin, PBC alumni and Sports Hall of Fame recipient, a Global success, dance choreographer and motiviational speaker (IkinAchieve) who told his amazing and moving story of growing up 'different' in a footy family. His journey through school and into the years beyond. Anthony talked of finding success doing what he loves and always being true to his own personal story. So inspirational!

We also heard from the team at the Tallebudgera Outdoor Education Centre about their fantastic education program for young girls, Braving the Wilderness. PBC student, Lillian, gave her personal testimony about her experience of the program and how it has personally helped her. We are thrilled to report that, as a result of listening to Lillian's recount, one of our Alliance partners, Mr Michael Hart MP,  has agreed to sponsor this program to ensure more PBC students can participate and benefit from it. Thank you Mr Hart!

We finished the breakfast talking about the upcoming 50 Year Celebrations this Saturday. We are excited to welcome everyone onto school grounds from 3pm.

Thank you!

We would like to give a huge shout out to ALL our PBC Alliance Partners and Members!

These amazing businesses are supporting PBC students with their everyday education in many different ways. This support assists many PBC programs and students directly ensuring all have the opportunity to reach their potential. Please support those that support our students.
