Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.jpgThe school 50th Anniversary Open Day and Events are now only a month away.  Please check inside this newsletter for more information about the activities on Saturday 11 June from 3pm. We hope to see everyone there.

With winter expected to be cooler and wetter this year, the school’s winter uniform items are already in stock. Students are to be in full school uniform as the travel to and from school.

Access to the school through the pool side road will be blocked from next Monday. The pool precinct is being re-developed and the works are expected to take close to two years. Whilst the construction work is happening, the service road between the school and the pool will be closed.

The school is currently looking for a casual pool of workers who would be interested in the positions of; cleaner, teacher-aide, administration officer and canteen staff, if any of these roles interest you, please contact the school and ask for Sally Holmes or Traci Hayman.

Engagement

The opposite of engagement is disengagement. For school’s we might consider this to be behaviour that shows that a student is not connected to their learning, their classroom, their peers, their teacher or the school as a whole. Recent studies in the western world indicate that as many as 30% of teenagers in the middle years of schooling are disengaged from schooling. Engagement is actually strong when students are finishing primary school and drops off in middle school. Often this is demonstrated as a lack of belonging – what’s happening inside schools can have a big impact on this. This impacts all types of students from all backgrounds. The OECD reports that students who are more disengaged are more likely to struggle academically but more importantly have decreased wellbeing as compared to their more engaged peers. Some students feel lonely and that they struggle to make friends at school, even feeling like an outsider.

What are the challenges for fostering student engagement in our current world? In our own school?

What roles can schools and parents play in helping students to become more connected and fulfilled?

If disengagement were a result of poor teaching or bad planning, the remedies would be simple” (Shirley & Hargreaves, 2021, p. 120). With a significant proportion of students disengaged in all schools the answer is undoubtably more than simply being more entertaining.

The first step is identifying when we see a young person who may be struggling and reaching out so that they know that we care about them and their wellbeing. Unless we have that personal connection learning cannot begin. I encourage you also to check in with your young person especially if the demands of school seem too much or there is no bounce in their step to get to school to see their friends. There are many staff here at school who are happy to work with you and your child to uncover why they may be feeling disconnected to their peers or the school.

Senior School continues to be a busy place and it is a joy to see opportunities which have been COVID-impacted for the past couple of years return to our school calendar. Particularly within the Creative Arts, recent Dance Eisteddfods and the Senior OPTIMA Instrumental Camp have just concluded, with students having these opportunities for the first time in 2 years! It continues to be a joy to watch our students excel in these extra-curricular areas, whilst expertly balancing their athletic and academic commitments also. Thankyou also to all parents and students who took the opportunity to engage in our Parent Teacher Interviews this week - this process is so vital to the experience of every student, so thankyou. As always, should you have any feedback for us as to how we can continue to improve the Parent Teacher Interview process please let us know.

Year 12 Snapshot

Congratulations to all Year 12 students given the release of their Unit 3 reports, emailed home last week. It is expected that all ATAR-eligible students will be able to have a 1-on-1 with a senior staff member to analyse their ATAR prediction by Week 6 of this term. Likewise, students at risk of not attaining a QCE by the end of this year will be contacted by a member of the Senior Schooling team to provide support.

Please be aware that Year 12 students will have a full exam shutdown in Week 10 of this term. Please be sure to keep this time interruption-free.

Year 11

Year 11 students will have their end of Unit 1 assessment coming up in weeks 3 to 5 of this term. The exam timetable for Year 11 exams in week 5 has been finalised and will be published on the school website and student notices: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment

Year 11 students will have the opportunity to change classes at the end of Unit 1 (week beginning Monday 23 May).

Year 10

Year 10 Term 1 reports were sent home last week. These results will be combined with Term 2 assessment to finalise the Year 10 Semester 1 report. Year 10 Term 2 assessment will be finalised in the last week of this term.

Students in Year 10 are again reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 Semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in Year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

Other senior schooling news:

  • Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.
  • Students completing VET courses need to ensure that they are up to date in their competencies as completion of the course is generally required to attain the QCE.
  • A group of Year 12 students recently completed their First Aid and Safety course. Another course has been scheduled for August. This is a very useful qualification and all students that have not completed these qualifications are encouraged to complete the course. This course has a cost of $75 and will attain 2 QCE points (this may decrease pressure on student leading into external exams). Students can register by contacting Ms Golding in the library (jgold61@eq.edu.au ).

Please visit the following link for more information on the requirements for the QCE: https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/your-qce-pathway/about-the-qce

Health Camp

Year 12s recently embarked on an adventurous journey, where they hiked and camped in a self sufficient manner for 3 days. This required them to carry all requirements in their packs which weighed 20kg+, trekking approximately 18 kilometres through Numinbah Valley including up some very steep hills, and cooking meals on small portable appliances. Whilst on this journey they were challenged to reflect on personal attributes and build their story of themselves now and into the future. Despite ending the 3 day hike sore and tired, both students and teachers felt motivated and connected by the experience. I am very proud of the efforts and growth from those who attended this camp. Some pictures of us in amazing surroundings are included. Year 11 Health camp is up next in week 9 of this term.

Sport and Recreation

In class the students have been developing a range of lifesaving skills and knowledge. On Thursday, those eligible will be assessed for the Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue), which is equivalent to the Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medallion. This valuable experience provides those students with an extra 4 QCE points as well as a qualification they can use to gain employment.

Sponsored by Griffith Gold Coast Rotary, PBC students Sari, Kaianna and Zara, represented PBC at Model United Nations (MUNA) 2022. Held at Tweed Civic and Cultural Centre on Saturday 30 April, schools from both the Tweed and the Gold Coast debated the big issue facing the United Nations today. Speaking as delegates from Russia, PBC students quickly made allies with China and North Korea, voting as a block against resolutions such as:

  • Sustainable development: Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind
  • United response against global health threats: combating COVID 19
  • Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping
  • The safety of journalists and the issue of impunity

GC5 Cluster Sport Beach and Bush Walking

We had a glorious day exploring our backyard today. Congratulations to all students who walked 15 km from PBC up to and over Burleigh Headland with great attitudes and stamina. Looking forward to the next one.

Creative Arts Excellence

83 super excited Creative Arts Excellence students travelled with CAX staff to QPAC to see Frozen the Musical. We were blown away with the scale of the production! Such an exciting experience for all involved!

Music Excellence

On Wednesday 4th May, the Music Excellence students had the privilege of attending “Lights, Camera, Action” at the Concert Hall, QPAC in Brisbane.

This annual educational music concert, showcases the power of an orchestra through the language of soundtracks. This year we were very lucky to celebrate with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra celebrating the 90th birthday of the master of music:  John Williams.

The orchestra performed many signature tunes that have endeared John Williams to millions of filmgoers over the years.  Epic fanfares of Star Wars, swirling magic of Harry Potter, adventurous Indiana Jones, celestial ET and many many more.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic performance, as well as being impressed by the enormity and spectacle of the theatre building itself.

Afterwards, the students strolled through the Southbank gardens and had a bite to eat, before venturing forth to the Gallery of Modern Art where they soaked in the powerful pieces of Indigenous Australian art and many more contemporaries.

May the Forth be with you!

Girls Rugby League

For the first time in a couple of years, PBC have entered a team in the Karyn Murphy Cup.

It's a Girls Rugby League comp run out of school hours by the Titans.

As part of our prep, we trained with Titans Strength and Conditioner Steve Hooper, and met current Titans halfback and PBC Alumni, Toby Sexton.

To field a full team, we have been fortunate to join forces with another school, St Joseph's Coomera, and the girls came up with the name PB Joeys.

Our very first game was against an experienced Keebra Park team, and while we didn't win, we showed incredible heart in defence and made some great breaks. The girls met just 20 minutes before the game, getting along very quickly and making some great combinations of the field.

We're counting down to the next game already!

Let's get involved in National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. NRW, which is held from 27 May to 3 June, provides an opportunity for all of us to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme is: “Be Brave. Make Change”, which presents a challenge to all Australians to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for the benefit of all Australians. The dates for NRW commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. For more information and some great resources, head to the NRW website.

May is Queensland Small Business Month, celebrating small businesses who make a vital contribution to our community. Thousands of small businesses across our state drive our economy, creating local jobs and building strong communities. It has been a tough couple of years for small business. Show your support by shopping locally from independent retailers instead of big chains. Share the love for your favourite local businesses on social media by taking a picture @tagging them and adding the hashtags #QSBM2022 #loveyoursmallbusiness #shoplocal #buylocal. Visit Love your small business campaign for more ways to show your support.

Flu season is here – are you prepared?

Flu_season.jpg

The flu is a serious illness for everyone, and while people with underlying health problems are at a higher risk of complications, healthy individuals can get really sick, too. It is not possible to predict how severe the 2022 season will be, however, a low incidence of flu in one year could result in a severe season for those who haven’t been vaccinated or had natural exposure to flu viruses previously. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent both children and adults from getting the flu, becoming seriously ill from the flu, or passing it on to others. From Monday 2 to Friday 13 May, we’re celebrating Guidance Officer Week and the amazing work of our school’s guidance officers, Steve Jones (Senior Secondary) and Anna Willis (Junior Secondary). Our Guidance Officers are a wonderful support to our students. They are specialist teachers who deliver a broad range of services to school community members. They contribute to the development of a comprehensive student support and wellbeing program that is responsive to the needs of the school community.

It’s been a tough start to the year with the floods and continuing pandemic, but we’re all in this togethe Mr Jones or Ms Willis are here to help. Talk to your child’s Head of Year if you are concerned.
