Term One Success

We are happy to report overall a very good set of academic reports went out to families at the end of last term. Overall students in Junior Secondary attended 88.2% of the time. We also have had over 500 Optima rewards given to Year 7 students alone in Term one.

This term our focus areas are;

  • supporting ongoing numeracy and literacy development of foundational skills to support all learning
  • writing is a key focus and teachers will collaborate using a case management approach to improve student writing
  • improving achievement of A grades outside of the Academic excellence program in maths, english, science and humanities.

NAPLAN

In Week 4 our Year 7 and 9s will be sitting online NAPLAN, the individual student results are used by English and Maths teachers to tailor programs to continue to build on the literacy and numeracy skills as the students move on to the next year level. We are encouraging students to follow our motto of doing their best when it comes to NAPLAN. Our staff and those at the primary schools have been working on building the skills needed for these exams for years but there are little things that can be done in these last few weeks.

Should your child be absent for any of the tests, they will be provided with a catch-up session in Week 5.

Students require their school laptops charged for the day as usual, and a pair of headphones. They will also need a pen or pencil for use on their scribble paper.

Parent Teacher Interviews

If you have not done so already, please take the time to sit with your child and discuss their interim report, emailed at the end of last term. Celebrate successes and where improvements are needed, set some specific, realistic and measurable goals. Should you require clarification or need to immediately discuss your child’s progress, remember that teachers welcome contact from parents; all teachers’ emails are listed under ‘contacts’ on the PBC website.

Parent Teacher Interview bookings are open from Friday 29 April. The interviews are conducted over across 3 days – Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May. These interviews will be face-to-face interviews and will be held in the PBC Hall. This should provide as many opportunities as possible for you to meet with teachers. Students are most welcome to be part of the interviews; it can be very useful for them to ask their own questions and to receive direct feedback from teachers, with you present. Teachers are also hoping to learn more about the student, and will welcome information that will help them support each individual in their learning. We look forward to meeting with you.

Work Experience Year 9

All Year 9's are invited to organise work experience for Week 1 of  Term 3. This is an opportunity to explore a career of interest and for those interested in school based apprenticeships and traineeships for senior school can be the start of this relationship. Information packs have gone out to students at assembly late last term and initial paperwork can be returned to students services whenever it is completed. The school will then make contact with the employer to finalise the placement.

House Camps

This year we are introducing adventurous journeys where each House (Athenians, Phoenicians, Vikings and Spartans) will attend a 3 day camp in Term 4, Week 10 - Monday to Wednesday. Each house camp will be going to a different destination and will combine Years 7, 8 and 9. House camp activities will build on character strengths of teamwork and perseverance. In working together in team building activities students increase their own self confidence and build empathy for others. More information will be provided to the students in Week 2.

Welcome back to Term 2 for both our Senior School students and parents. Fingers crossed this will be a Term with minimal unforeseen interruptions, allowing all of our students the time to invest in their studies and the range of sporting, artistic and extra-curricular opportunities that commence this Term. We'd like to acknowledge firstly the outstanding contributions of our community in recent ANZAC remembrance events, including the wonderful lead of our Student Leaders in both our school ceremony, the Currumbin Dawn Service, the mid-morning march and the Currumbin RSL Mid-Morning Service.

Parent Teacher Interviews

This week an email will be sent to all parents regarding booking for the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews, held across Tuesday 10 - Thursday 12 May. These interviews provide an essential opportunity for students and parents to gain direct feedback from teachers on how they can improve and maintain their academic grades. Please take the opportunity, regardless of your child's year level, to make a booking where possible and meet your child's teachers.

Report Cards

  • Year 11 students received their report card late last term, with performance monitoring and mentoring having commenced. Year 11 students who are on an ATAR pathway should expect conversations regarding their academic progress to increase, whilst students who are not passing 5/6 subjects will start having conversations regarding their post-compulsory schooling pathway.
  • Year 10 and Year 12 report cards will be released at the start of week 3- Tuesday 3 May. Year 10 students are reminded that it is their results in their Semester 1 reports that will determine the range of subjects available to them through the upcoming SETPlan process.

Year 12 First Aid and Safety course

Students that registered for the First Aid and Safety course on 6 May will have been emailed the their log in details to complete the online theory modules. These modules need to be completed by 2 May for students to attend the practical training day on 6 May.

Another course has been scheduled for August. This is a very useful qualification and all students that have not completed these qualifications are encouraged to complete the course. This course has a cost of $75 and will attain 2 QCE points. Students can register by contacting Ms Golding  in the library (jgold61@eq.edu.au)

PBC ANZAC Day Ceremony

On Friday morning, PBC held its annual ANZAC Day Ceremony where staff, students, and local members of our community were able to come together and commemorate those who have fought for our freedom; the Australian and New Zealand troops who served on the Western Front, those who served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions since, and those who continue to serve today. It was a truly beautiful ceremony.

The ceremony was followed by a Morning Tea for all specials guests, cadets and student leaders.

Thank you to all our special guests, staff, student leaders, wreath laying students, cadets, and music students who contributed.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service and Mid Morning March

Thank you to our School Captain, Isabella Edge who spoke beautifully at the Currumbin ANZAC Dawn Service as she reflected on the service and the sacrifices of our troops past and present. Bella’s stirring tribute to the youth of war perfectly represented her fellow peers, family and our community. Thank you to both Isabella and Tanu, our School Captains, for representing our school with such valour. For those wishing to watch Isabella's moving speech click the below link.

https://youtu.be/jO5RIsXThO4

PBC students and staff also participated in the annual mid morning ANZAC Day march from Winders Park to the Currumbin RSL Club. Our Senior Year 12 leaders led our PBC students with pride to honour the courage and sacrifices of our ANZACS. PBC Vice-Captains, Lily and Jed represented PBC as wreath layers at the mid-morning service at Currumbin RSL.

bricks.jpgI believe that whoever coined the term ‘Every Day Counts’ must have been a mathematics teacher. Consider the mathematics curriculum as bricks; each year we lay down a new layer, building on prior knowledge. Absences are missing bricks – next year the foundation to support it won’t be as strong.  Our teachers work diligently to ensure every math lesson is purposeful and supports the development numeracy capability.

Please prompt your child to do a quick stocktake of their equipment. Whether it be needing new notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers or a calculator your child will not be as successful as they could be if they were properly prepared for each lesson.

This term Year 7, 8 and 9 mainstream mathematics assessment will consist of an exam. Year 8 students will also have an assignment. Please see below for assessment due dates:

maths_1.png

(answer is 9)

The Year 10 science excursion to the Translational Research Institute (TRI) Brisbane, extended our knowledge on DNA and further educated us on extracting and analysing recombinant DNA; in our case bacterial DNA which now contained green fluorescent protein taken from jelly fish, allowing it to glow under UV light. It was a new experience having the opportunity to use scientific technology and equipment such as pipettes and centrifuges, working in pairs to extract plasmid DNA from the transformed bacterial cells. The experiment separated the plasmid DNA from the bacteria using the three following techniques:

  1. DNA extraction

  2. Restriction enzyme digestion

  3. Gel electrophoresis

Throughout the day, we all had an enjoyable time and by the end, we had successfully separated DNA fragments. Even having the opportunity to dress in scientific lab coats brought about smiles and was a new experience for all of us!

Science Club

science_club_forensic.png

After all the disruptions term 1, Science Club is finally starting again in Term 2. If you like science and want to have a bit of fun, then why not come along to science club. Science club is very hands-on, with a student-centred approach. Science club regulars may also be offered to participate in other extra-curricular science activities. This term’s topic will be forensics, and students will analyse for example fingerprints, fibres, blood spatter patterns, soil, and handwriting. As a culminating activity, students will apply skills they have learned to analyse a crime scene.

Each week there is a lucky door prize for a $6 tuckshop voucher and a pick from the prize box. Get an ‘admit one’ from your science teacher for a bonus entry ticket to increase your chances of a prize.

Belonging isn’t just a buzzword, it’s the key to our kids’ education

anna_willis.jpgAccording to the OECD’s latest report Trends In Education, belonging will be a major factor shaping classrooms of the future, and after two years of our kids enduring isolation through Covid, this is very welcome news.

Many Australian students have faced significant disruption during the Covid pandemic. And when they weren’t being disrupted, they faced uncertainty over whether, or when, they would be disrupted. The lockdowns and school closures threatened an important predictor of school belonging: actually being at school.

So it could be expected that the OECD would acknowledge that belonging is an important ingredient in successful educational outcomes. Most adults would probably agree that belonging has been on all our minds during periods of lockdowns and subsequent disruptions to social relationships.

But now that we have traction from one of the world’s leading authorities, we mustn’t let belonging become just another buzzword. Sure, it looks great in slogans and on posters, but a sense of belonging is so much more. In fact, belonging is widely acknowledged as a fundamental human need, and schools are the epicentre of belonging for many students.

Schools have a special role to play in student belonging

In 1993, Carol Goodenow and Kathleen Grady defined school belonging as “the extent to which children feel individually welcomed, respected, included, and supported by others within the school social environment”. This definition has gone on to become one of the most widely-used ways to describe school belonging in the literature.

Decades of research shows that students’ feelings of school belonging can have a profound impact on their wellbeing, identity development, mental health, and a range of other outcomes related to a successful school experience. And these impacts can last well into adulthood. That’s right – the very benefits drawn from feeling a sense of belonging in school can later influence future mental health, education levels and employment success.

What can we do to build student belonging?

  • Schools require leaders who can effectively convey the importance of belonging, and nurture the implementation of strategies that encourage students to feel like they belong in their schools.
  • Peer groups have a significant impact on a student’s experience of school. While many students feel comfortable interacting with peers, many want adults to facilitate these interactions.
  • Additionally, many students require opportunities to interact with peers as well as the opportunities to learn and grow their social and emotional competencies to facilitate meaningful relationships with others.
  • Schools need to be safe, comfortable places for all students. Legislation, policy, community attitudes and social norms all have an important role to play in making this happen.
  • The most effective way to improve school belonging for students is to build connections with the staff, but like all relationships, this is a two-way street, and we need to also ensure teachers and school staff feel a sense of belonging to school – and to do that, teacher and school staff wellbeing must be at the front of our minds.
