Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpg

Saturday Night witnessed the PBC P&C Gala held at the School Hall. The major fundraiser for the new library precinct was an outstanding success with 180 people attending what was a well-run and entertaining evening. The Hospitality Students once again excelled in a real life situation as they move a step closer to having their competencies signed off. The ultimate feedback for the students is when some attendees believed that professional caterers have been hired for the event only to find out that it was our students who were responsible for the food and table service. The Instrumental Music students were also very well received and their performances were of the usual outstanding quality. What was even more impressive is that the majority of the students had just been on an extended three day performance tour of the Darling Downs and were backing up for a Saturday Night at PBC. Well done to all the staff, students and parents who were involved.

Friday will see the annual Track and Field Carnival held on the oval. Students are able to come to school in their House Colours. The day has events for everyone from the serious athlete, to the students who just want to compete, to the students who will engage with novelty events. As a school we are really trying to promote participation and engagement on the day and we hope to see as many students as possible attend and compete.

On the morning of the Track and Field Carnival is the PBC Alliance Breakfast, which is now fully catered for and managed by our Hospitality Students.

Congratulations to the Philosothon students who have once again qualified for the National Finals.

With the school culture remaining strong, the Student Council will run a fundraiser for their charity of choice The Sanctuary Refuge later this term which will take the form of a Free Dress Day with a Wear Purple theme which highlights the issue of Domestic Violence. In Term 3, we will again engage with Daffodil Day. The students will be positing more information about these events in the near future.

Regards,

Chris Capra

The_Sanctuary_Refuge.jpgOur Senior School Student Leaders have arranged a whole-school free dress day for Friday 7 June. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise awareness about the impacts of family violence, and to donate much-needed funds to The Sanctuary Women, Children and Pet’s Refuge. Assessment

  • Year 11 students have just completed their Unit 1 assessment. Their next assessment block is early in Term 3.
  • Assessment calendars for Term 2 and the Shutdown calendars for Year 10 and 12 are available on the school website under the curriculum tab
  • Year 10 and 12 students have their next shutdown commencing on Thursday 13 June

Year 12 QCS classes

These classes will have masterclasses and practice exams for the Writing task and Multiple Choice tests at the end of shutdown. As Year 12 QCS students make their final preparations for the QCS exam in Term 3 there will be additional support tutorials which will require students to stay at school during their allocated sport time on a Wednesday, more information about these classes will be provided later in the term.

QCAA Learning Accounts

All Year 12 students were recently issued (via their school email) instructions to log onto the Student Connect website at www.qcaa.qld.edu.au. It is important that students do this to ensure that their details such as correct spelling of their name, address and date of birth and subjects studied are correct. At the end of Year 12 it is the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, not PBC, which will issue and send out the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and OP and Senior Statement. Students who log on by 31 August are also in the running to win an Apple MacBook Air. Any student who finds that their details are incorrect should contact Ms Ashby in Y block.

Study Skills Update: Years 10 and 11

Elevate Education Student Seminars – Tuesday 28 May

To support our students in the development of personal qualities, organisational and study skills necessary to achieve strong outcomes under the new SATE system, Elevate Education will deliver workshops to our Year 10 and 11 students next week. Elevate Education are a national leader within this area, and have worked alongside students, teachers and parents in top performing schools across the country. As our current Year 11 students attended an Elevate Workshop last year, the focus for each 70 minute session will be different depending on year level:

Year 10 – Study Sensei this workshop will enable students to learn about study techniques that can be used across all subjects to get great results. Topics include working consistently (rather than cramming), structuring and reviewing notes, creating links between topics, and standing out on assessment.

Year 11 – Ace Your Exams this workshop covers critical exam day skills – and equally as important - the preparation techniques needed to get maximum impact. Topics include time-allocation, stress management, planning and practice exams.

We look forward to our students enjoying an insightful and relevant workshop which will support them to achieve their goals in their final years of schooling.

Year 10 into 11 subject selections (SET Planning)

Year 10s will commence planning for their subject selections and pathway for Year 11 and 12 in Term 3.

Social Media

Social media is an increasing part of our everyday lives with many teenagers having access to a digital platform, system, website or app that enables them to create and share content, and connect with each other. One of the many popular social media sites ReachOut.com provides parent support including information about the most popular sites your child may be accessing. There are risks and benefits for your child using social media.

Facts

  • On average, children aged 10 to 14 years have 2 active social media accounts
  • On average, outside of school, 10 to 14 year olds spend 23 hours online per week
  • 12% of 10 to 14 year olds share personal information online
  • In 2018, Facebook had 583 million fake accounts and Instagram had 95 million

Do you know your child’s digital identify?

  • get your child to Google their name
  • if there is any negative content, delete or report to the website where it is posted
  • if there is an old media account, take steps to remove it. If they have lost access to any account, contact the social media provider and request it be deleted.
  • if you child is tagged in an embarrassing photo or video ask the person to delete it. If they won’t, report the post and un-tag it yourself.
  • has your child added a ‘random’? If you don’t know them in the real world, delete or block them.

Protect your child

  • block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions
  • filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism
  • monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long?
  • set time limits, blocking access after a set time

Used in conjunction with Parental guidance and discussing cyber-safety with your children, there are many eSafety Applications available that can be used to protect them when they are on-line. Most can provide a filtering and monitoring service for home internet use as well as mobile devices. Many will help you as parents to:

  • manage screen time
    • set routines for sleep, study and screen time
  • keep content child friendly
    • remove adult content from searches
  • restrict social media use
    • manage social media apps and in-app purchases
  • locate devices
    • tracks devices
  • protect devices at home and on the go

We would encourage parents to visit the government official E Safety website www.esafety.gov.au for further support. In addition we recommend that you contact your internet service provider (ISP) Telstra, Optus, Dodo, TPG etc. and seek support on Internet parental controls through them, most ISPs offer router based parental controls with their subscription.

eSafety Applications

  • Family Zone
  • Qustodio Parental Controls
  • Net Nanny
  • Norton family Premier
  • Surfie (Mobile)

 Gaming

Signs that your child’s online activity may be having a negative impact on them or on your family include:

  • less interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport
  • not doing so well at school
  • tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches, eye strain
  • changes in eating patterns
  • reduced personal hygiene
  • obsession with particular websites or games
  • extreme anger when being asked to take a break from online activity
  • appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer
  • becoming withdrawn from friends and family

If necessary, you can get help for your child through a counselling or online support service

Cybersafety and Cyberbullying provides important information for parents about cybersafety and cyberbullying. It suggests what parents and caregivers could do if their child is the target of, or is responsible for, inappropriate online behaviour.

cyberbullying.jpg

A new report cyberbullying icon is now featured on all state school computers.

The digital world is fundamental to education and entertainment in this technological age. However, it needs to be a safe and secure place for our young people.

Reporting cyberbullying and getting inappropriate content removed is one step towards a safer online world. The new report cyberbullying icon is an initiative of the Department of Education.

Report Cyberbullying

If you or your child are concerned about cyberbullying, report it.

Bookmark that webpage on your child’s bring-your-own (BYOD) device so they can:

  • make a complaint
  • find someone to talk to
  • get advice on dealing with cyber issues

There's help for removing cyberbullying material from websites and social media, and for reporting offensive or illegal content.

There's also a direct link to Kids Helpline, offering free and confidential online and telephone counselling 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

School Attendance Everyday Counts

Every parent of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. School absenteeism and truancy can impact significantly on students' learning and wellbeing. Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.

Parents and caregivers must send children to school every school day under Queensland law unless there is an acceptable reason such as:

  • illness
  • doing work experience
  • competing in school sporting events.

Avoid keeping your child away from school for reasons such as:

  • birthdays
  • shopping
  • visiting family and friends
  • if they sleep in
  • looking after other children
  • minor check ups or care, such as hair cuts.

Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.

Establishing good routines around school can assist with regular school attendance. These include:

  • have a set time to go to bed
  • have a set time to get out of bed
  • have uniform and school bag ready the night before
  • have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
  • set a time for daily homework activities
  • speak about school positively
  • send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term.

Schools must monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers any unexplained absences.  If your child does not want to go to school, or is missing school without you knowing, contact your school immediately for assistance and support.  If you are having trouble getting your child to school, please call and talk with either our Guidance Officer or Year Level Dean.

NAPLAN 2019

Thank you NAPLAN parents!

Thank you to every parent who supported their student through the NAPLAN testing last week, and who actively stayed in touch with the school about absences. We had a large number of students attend the catch up tests on Friday, which means that families will now get a fuller snapshot of the students’ progress in their essential literacy and numeracy.

Our Year 7 and Year 9 students are to be congratulated for their amazing efforts over the three days of NAPLAN. They were calm, settled, prepared and almost every student visibly gave their best effort. They should be proud of their work.

The QCAA will release NAPLAN reports later this year, at which time they will be mailed home to families. Each year, PBC uses the data as part of its ongoing efforts to improve teaching and learning for every student. We look forward to sharing our school results in Semester 2.

This year will have been the final ‘paper’ NAPLAN for our Year 7 students. We are moving to online testing in 2020, along with every other Queensland school. Teachers will be focussed on preparing students for the changed testing environment in the months ahead, with Year 8 and Year 7 students participating in a NAPLAN ‘trial’. These trials will take only one lesson and are not assessed in any way. However, they will familiarise students with the new test environment and allow PBC to assess its readiness for the technological challenges of online assessment.

Connect For Success

Earlier this term, parents and caregivers across the Middle School should have received by email Connect for Success, a list of all Term 2 student assessment and the due dates. While ultimately it is the students’ responsibility to organise your time, it can help the planning of family schedules if parents know when their child can expect to be busy with assessment, need an early night and so forth. Please contact your child’s teacher for further information on any particular item.

Please note that core assessment this term spans across Weeks 7 to 10. When the assessment occurs well before the holidays, teachers will be commencing the next unit of work, and students will be involved in significant work up to the last day of term. For this reason, we request that parents arrange for students’ holidays to be taken during the official holiday period only. For further information, see the Assessment Policy.

QuickSmart Update

QuickSmart students enjoyed a special breakfast before Tuesday’s tests, to celebrate positive participation. Attendance this semester has been very high, with many QuickSmart students having been to 100% of the sessions offered (except when assessment is occurring).

Our specialist QuickSmart Teacher Aides report that the students are responsive and making significant improvements in their reading and numeracy skills. Notably, the self- confidence of students has improved enormously since the beginning of the program.

We welcome QuickSmart parents though to visit during Week 6, and see their children in action. Could you beat your child in the flash card challenge?

Our 4 Houses continue to battle it out in the quest for 2019 House Cup glory. Competitions as always, have been broad and varied with the aim to include every student at PBC. Recent competitions have included the Trick Shots Instagram based comp and a Skip Off @interhouse_comps. Congratulations to Ziggy Gillespie from the Spartans for taking out the win in the Trick Shots comp. His Trick Shot featured Ziggy launching a handball into a basket, by flipping and then catching his skateboard. Very impressive indeed. Shout out to the Vikings who had the highest participation in this competition!

trick_shot_Copy_.jpg

The Skip Off tested both student’s stamina and skills through the longest skip and most double-unders comp. It was great to see so many students and teachers get involved.

2019 Track and Field Carnival

The 2019 Track and Field Carnival is fast approaching. Thursday 30 May is our selected events day and Friday 31 May is the official full school Carnival. There will be a great carnival atmosphere on the day, with many ways for students to have fun and be involved. Competitive and participation races will be held on the track, and field events will occur throughout the two days (see details below).

The Track and Field Carnival is the only day on the PBC calendar that brings all students together in competition and fun. House Leaders encourage all students to dress up in their House colours and represent their House with pride on the day. Athenians – Yellow; Spartans – Blue; Phoenicians – Red; Vikings – Green
Extra activities have been booked and are always a huge hit with the students. This year the activities include: Bubble Soccer, Giant Slide, Inflatable Obstacle Courses and Ninja Wall. To partake in these activities, students will need to purchase a wristband ($5). These will be on sale before school Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (carnival day). We recommend that wristbands are purchased before the day.

Any students wishing to be nominated for the 1500m, 3000m or hurdles for DISTRICT TRACK & FIELD must see Mrs Hart by the end of this week.

The summary below details how the two days will run.

Thursday 30 May – Selected Events Day

  • All timetable classes run as normal
  • Field events run from 12:00-3:00pm for pre-nominated students only

We look forward to this Track and Field Carnival being the best yet!

'Medea' by Shock Therapy

PBC Arts students were treated to an exceptional performance of the Greek classic Medea. Presented by local theatre troupe Shock Therapy productions, the play presented students with a contemporary, striking performance that left an indelible impression upon the audience. A big thank you to Suzanne Parker and the Arts faculty for organising this production.

Creative Generation Choral Fanfare

On Monday 27 May, PBC’s Vocal Ensemble participated in the Creative Generation Choral Fanfare. Choral Fanfare is a biennial festival of choirs from Queensland state schools to promote and celebrate school-based choral music programs. The program receives participation from over 11,000 state school students and showcases the outstanding vocal talent of our school students through performance.

Being our first time participating in the event, our Vocal Ensemble were keen to learn and grow from the experience. A big congratulations to the students involved as the ensemble received a Distinction Gold Award for our performance. Our students demonstrated an excellent standard for presentation, sound quality, technical elements and musical interpretation.

Congratulations to the 36 students involved, as well as their Vocal Director Kristina Tassone.

Optima Regional Tour

On Wednesday, students and staff from the Optima Wind Ensemble and Stage Band 1 began their journey to Stanthorpe for the inaugural Regional Band Tour, little did we know how much of a success it would be. The first stop of the tour was to Stanthorpe Primary School, with the entire school (all 280 of them) sitting eagerly awaiting the big sound that would be the Optima Wind Ensemble. To say they were excited and shocked by what they heard would be an understatement. This young group of students sat for over an hour and watched us perform wanting more and more.

We then performed at the Stanthorpe Band Shell for an evening of music sharing with the local community band who sounded fantastic and jumped at the opportunity to sit in with our groups. The local paper created an ad for the performance and the local Scouts came down to cook us the most delicious BBQ, we felt very welcome! Three members of the community band performed with the Optima Wind Ensemble and Stage Band and you could not wipe the smile off their faces, they begged to be able to come to a school like PBC, even just for a week to soak up all the music we have to offer.

On the second day, we travelled on the bus with our trusty driver, Sarah, to Toowoomba. We performed for Toowoomba East State School and again wowed the audience with a sound they have never heard before, the students were so excited they stayed afterward to hear individuals play their instruments and see the instruments up close, some of the students were even asking for autographs! One of the highlights of this performance was a student commenting, “I’ve never felt so much joy than I felt today”.

That afternoon we let out hair down at the local bowls club, where community members volunteered their time to coach the students in an afternoon of barefoot bowls. The students had a great time and the community members have invited us back for more bowls and a concert. After the bowls it was time to eat at the all-time classic restaurant, Sizzler, to say that the teachers on the trip were more excited about this wouldn’t be a lie – who can resist Sizzler cheesy bread?

On the final day we got back on the bus and travelled to Brisbane to take part in a Workshop with Dr Peter Morris at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. The students played better than they have ever played before (you can only imagine how that would have sounded) and wowed the guest conductor. Peter spent time on small details not letting the students move forward until they perfected the section. It was great for the students to be in the ‘Con’ space and to have the opportunity to dream of what it would be like to study there in the future.

All in all the trip was a great success, students and staff had a great time and we will definitely do it again. A special thank you to Justin Hart, Loren Skyring, Nicky Cooper and Tamara Gillard for their tireless work on the tour. We could not do the things we do in Instrumental music without the great support of our wonderful parent community.

REDS in NRL

PBC's past Sports Excellence HOD Rod Patison 'Patto' was recently asked to attend a function to celebrate past PBC alumni Darius Boyd's 300th NRL game that coincidentally was also PBC alumni Tom Dearden's 1st! Both REDS!

Resized_146A0568_3113_Copy_.jpeg

Friday 17 May, 25 of the Senior Rugby League Reds players travelled up to Suncorp Stadium to watch last year’s National Championship winning Captain Tom Dearden play halfback for the Brisbane Broncos as they took on the table topping Sydney Roosters. In only his third top grade game, Tommy showed exactly why at the tender age of 18 he has been promoted so quickly as he forced a line dropout with a great banana kick, put Matt Gillett through a gaping hole for him to nearly score and to make a courageous cover tackle on a rampaging Latrell Mitchell to save the game.

The boys from PBC dressed in their Reds screamed at every touch and tackle that Tommy made, and erupted as the final siren went with the Broncos victorious 15-10.  At the end of the match Tommy made a Beeline to the boys in the crowd as they hung over the fence to embrace their mate. For all of us, it made us extremely Proud to be Red! A huge thanks to Coach Tim Maccan who drove the school bus and the Brisbane Broncos for providing us with the tickets to the game.

Queensland Ethics Olympiad

On Friday, Palm Beach achieved 2nd place in the Queensland Ethics Olympiad held at St Peters College in Brisbane, a major achievement competing against 15 schools from all over Queensland. This was also PBCs inaugural entry into the prestigious event.  Students discussed and debated the ethics and practicality of the following topics:

  • Private money in academia
  • China's social credit system
  • Data violence
  • De-extinction
  • Drone wars

Students competed up until the lunch break, then team averages were calculated. The two top scoring teams then went head to head in the final - PBC coming a close 2nd with 2 points difference. In the Queensland philosophy circle, PBC has a well-earned reputation for excellence.

Help for Families

Here at PBC we are always looking for opportunities to connect our local families with local help. Recently we had the chance to engage with the wonderful team at the Genuine Love Op Shop & Food Relief Program to access support for some families in our community. Genuine Love has been operating as an outreach arm of C3 Church in Currumbin for over 5 years and aims to provide essential support to the wider community. Their services include food hampers, practical help with clothing and furniture, and support with overcoming debt, among other things.

The C3 Community also run a fortnightly breakfast program at PBC for the last few years, feeding many of our junior students on a Thursday morning. As always, we are grateful to have had the chance to connect with services that add value and help to build on the collaborative efforts of the PBC staff and school community. Knowing where to turn in times of need can bring some peace into overwhelming situations and it's our hope to equip our community's families with information about help that matters when you need it most.

2019 Bond University Alumni Awards

Congratulations to PBC alumni Kate Vidgen (class of 1991) for being awarded the Robert Stable Medal, Bond University's highest accolade, for her impressive career at Macquarie Capital. PBC staff, Wendy Wise and Donna Condon were able to be there on the night.

Kate said she was thrilled to receive the medal, the highest honour the Bond University Alumni Awards can bestow.

The Robert Stable Medal is awarded to a graduate for achievement of an exceptional nature.

Kate, who completed a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts at Bond, is currently Macquarie Capital’s Global Head of Oil and Gas Principal, and after 21 years with the company, is turning her attention to future issues of disruption and sustainability in the energy sector.

Alongside her role at Macquarie, Kate is a non-executive director and Victorian chapter chair of Chief Executive Women, an organisation representing Australia’s most senior women leaders from the corporate, public service, academic and not-for-profit sectors.

Kate said being a leader in the current corporate era was a challenging role.

“Leadership skills are evolving because you’re having to constantly adapt your thinking and challenge your assumptions. We’re often taught to be persistent and keep pushing along the path we have set, and while that persistence and resilience is really important, a leader now has to have a clear plan, but must be willing to change that plan almost every day as the world changes.  This is a skill set that people didn’t have before, but I can’t think of an industry now where this agility is not important.”

Kate and her husband have six children between them, and despite her position as a boardroom leader, her most important role is as a mum. Her current priority is getting the kids through their teenage years - an achievement she ranks as being right up there with the Robert Stable Medal.

31 May is World No Tobacco Day.

If you do smoke cigarettes and are interested in quitting you can get further information here.

If you are concerned that your young person is smoking this is a great conversation point to talk about the financial and health implications for the future. Smoking can be associated with stress relief so talking about other coping strategies is important including sipping on water, knowing what your triggers are and avoiding them where possible, going for a walk etc.
