Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Congratulations to the Open Boys soccer team who are the State Schools Premier League champions for 2020, defeating Chancellor State College in the final. Well done to the two school debating teams with the Intermediate Team going through the season undefeated and the Senior Team losing the final by one point.
Exams commence in a few weeks, with senior secondary having an exam timetable. Students should be aware of their exam schedule and when they will be required to be at school.
Transition activities with our local primary schools has commenced with a number of Currumbin and Elanora State School students visiting the school over the past few weeks. We ask that any current PBC students with younger siblings (in catchment) please submit their enrolment forms as soon as possible.

The ‘busy end’ of the Term is upon us. It is a good time to check in with your student to see how they are feeling about their achievements so far this term and how they will meet the challenges that remain. While it will include subject assessment, demands might also include sporting finals, musical or drama performances and club activities, not to mention family and social events.
You can support your young person by helping them map out their final few weeks – their commitments, deadlines and plans for revision and study. You can access your child’s assessment calendar at the link below. Breaking large tasks – such as preparing to write a History essay under exam conditions – into smaller tasks – maybe half an hour of practising writing out essay plans – can reveal how achievable the job ahead actually is. This in turn can reduce stress for students – and their parents.

A reminder for students interested in apprenticeships to register with Ms Shreeve in Y block as a number of agencies have vacancies now. This database is also shared with future employers that contact the school with opportunities for school leavers.
The school website has a section which contains all the details regarding upcoming External Exams
https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment .
Parents and students should also be familiarising themselves with the myQCE website and its link to External assessment:
https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/external-assessment.html.
All Year 12 students have been emailed their LUI number and should by now have logged onto their QCAA learning account in the QCAA student portal. This is accessed via the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html. Students need to ensure that they use a personal email to register, as they will not have access to their school email at the end of the year. Student results will be published by the QCAA directly into their learning account on 19 December.
This is the first year of ATAR scores which will be calculated and published by QTAC. All ATAR students that wish to have their ATAR sent to them on 19 December need to register with QTAC, again using a personal email https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar/ .
Year 11
Year 11 students will finalise Unit 2 in shutdown during Week 10 of this term 14 to 18 September. The schedule of these exams has been published on the student curriculum drive and the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment. The school Assessment Policy is also on this link. A reminder that all assignments are due at 9:00am on the due date and that teachers are instructed to make a judgement on the evidence, which is available at this time. Late assignments are not accepted.
Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in Term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of 23 to 27 November.
We wish all Year 11’s who are undertaking the school leadership application process the best of luck over the coming few weeks as they undertake speeches and interviews.
Year 10
Thanks to all of the parents and caregivers who have supported their young people to complete the SET Plan process in a timely manner. The school is currently processing students’ requests, to develop a timetable to best meet the needs of Year 11 2021. In the meantime, students should be working to develop their skills and knowledge as best as possible, to provide strong foundations for their work habits next year.
Year 10 students are again reminded that they are much better off commencing a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SAT) in Year10 than in Year 11. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information regarding SATs.
Year 10 students will have shutdown exams on the last 3 days of this term 16 to 18 September. The timetable has also been published on the student drive and the school website. https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Testingandassessment/Pages/Testingandassessment.aspx

Students Planners
At this very busy time of year, it is easy for students to feel overwhelmed by the amount of assessment that they need to complete. The easiest way to alleviate this pressure is careful time management using a school student planner. This planner should be taken into class every lesson and key dates (due date for drafts, due dates for assessment, returning excursion notes etc.) recorded. By doing this, the student can avoid the last minute meltdown that often drags the whole household into panic. Using class time effectively and accessing teacher help will also help manage academic tasks. Parents are encouraged to check their child's planner and help them prioritise tasks. It's also a helpful way to check the "facts" that a student will often tell their parents (ie."my teacher didn't give me any homework", "I have no assignments due" ).
Please do not hesitate to contact teachers directly via phone or email. All email addresses can be found under in the 'Staff Contact List' under the Contact Us Page on the PBC website.
Subject selection
Year 8 and 9 students are completing their subject selections for Year 9 and 10 respectively. Students/parents can complete the hard copy forms and return them to Student Services, or the form can be submitted electronically.
For those families of Year 9 students who may be considering alternate education options in 2021, such as Varsity Learning College Flexi-school if you could advise Anita Sgalippa - Principal Junior Secondary, in writing of your intent that would be much appreciated to assist us with our planning.
Junior Secondary Student Leadership Selection
Students at present are considering nominating for House leadership positions in 2021. The positions available are Junior Secondary Head Prefects and we will elect 2 leaders for each house.
Now is the time for students to be speaking with current Prefects, Captains and House Leaders about the roles, and completing nomination forms (which are available from Year 7/8 Student Services in D Block and from House Leaders).
We wish all of our students well on their leadership journeys.
Meeting Commitments
The ‘busy end’ of the Term is upon us. It is a good time to check in with your student to see how they are feeling about their achievements so far this term and how they will meet the challenges that remain. While it will include subject assessment, demands might also include sporting finals, musical or drama performances and club activities, not to mention family and social events.

Plan to Finish Well
Each day, students at PBC are challenged to ‘give nothing but the best’. To achieve their best, students need to be fully committed to their attendance and learning. In Junior Secondary, teachers will be teaching course work right up to the end of term. When assessment is completed, teachers introduce foundation concepts for the coming term. For these reasons, please plan for your child to attend school through to Friday 18 September.
Please note that to maintain the integrity of tests, the PBC assessment policy states that exams are not to be sat early. If a student is forced by their commitments to miss a test, they will sit it as soon as possible afterwards.
After the holidays, school recommences on Tuesday 6 October 2020.
Megan Lu – Showcasing an outstanding science student
“I applied for the Introductory Course into Marine and Antarctic Science initially as an opportunity to build my connections with the scientific community for the future, and to gain a plan for a pathway into a research career as a deep sea biologist during the Maria Island camp in April. However, COVID struck - postponing the camp until November. As a stand in, the coordinators and professors of the course set up a mini-university course in the meantime. I decided to continue with this course to further 'get to know' UTAS, the lecturers and the like-minded students in the course, as well as use the open-choices of assignment topics to dive into my passion further, into the abyss.’ ~ Megan Lu
Read the very impressive essay attached that Megan wrote for a piece of assessment, of which she received a High Distinction. The essay addresses the topic: ‘Marine plastic pollution poses an increasing threat to marine species. Write an essay on the impacts of plastic pollution on marine species, and how society can progress towards solving this environmental problem’. There is no doubt that in the future Megan will be known as Dr Megan Lu, a published world-renowned marine scientist and authority of the deep sea.

28 July- 4 August 2020
The EP Languages Regional Championships are a set of competitions where languages students can compete against other students in their region and earn points from completing all languages content. It is a great way to engage students in their learning.

PBC Surfers make the most of Interrupted Competition Schedule
With multiple events in 2020 placed on standby and then 1 by 1 cancelled throughout the year, PBC surfers have revelled in the limited opportunity to test their heat craft in regional and state competitions in the past month.
Jackson Graham and Sai Maniwa have won the PBC Open Surfing Male and Female Titles. Their names will go on the Perpetual trophy along a list of past winners some of which have gone on to have success on the world stage.
The Oceanic Zone and South Coast regional school selection events have set up a strong platform for PBC dominance with 19 of the 24 students selected as representives at the up coming QLD school titles on the Sunshine Coast in Week 9 of Term 3. PBC also completed a clean sweep of the M.R. Shield division, winning all 4 age groups showing the great depth of talent in the program.
Surfing Qld have also completed their state rounds and Jackson Graham, Matt Boyle, Jordy Halford and Rico Haybittle have all emerged as State Champions in their respective divisions. Raya Campbell, Tom Whitpaine and Riley Munro (NSW) have also gained state selection. These students will now wait, fingers crossed, in hope that the scheduled Australian Junior Titles can also go ahead in December at North Stradbroke Island.
The students and teachers would like to thank Phil McNamara (long term program and world tour athlete coach) and Stace Galbraith (ex PBC student and now professional coach) for sharing their expertise during the weekly sessions.

The recently revamped (affiliation with Brisbane Roar) Schools Premier League came to a conclusion on Thursday 20 August at Gold Coast United’s fields. The grand finals were relocated to the Gold Coast to allow PBC’s senior boys to play, so thanks must go to the other schools in the grand finals to allow this to happen.
3 out of 4 teams from PBC were successful in making the semi-finals in 2020. All squads travelled to Logan Metro (minus our NSW Border Bubble players) to contest these matches. Junior boys and girls lost to Cavendish Road SHS whilst our Senior Boys beat Helensvale SHS 4-0 with a convincing display.
The Senior Boys played Chancellor State College for the second year running in the grand final. In a tight battle the PBC team came out victors 1-0 with Finn Tewson scoring the only goal of the match. Congratulations to all players within the squad for another successful year and being 2019 and 2020 back to back champions of the SPL!

Wellbeing Education
Aside from allowing you to personalise things and save more money, woodworking is also healthy for your mind and body. It even has social benefits! With fantastic guidance lead by Mr Bond and Industrial Technology staff in Mr Brown, Mr White and Mr Greg - Monday afternoons our Year 8 Clontarf Academy participants have started creating their very own skateboards. Without knowing it the young men have had to use math skills, such as shape, size, contrast, comparing and problem-solving. All students have been very mature and trusted whilst being on task and the projects are taking shape – no pun intended. Watch this space for the results in our next edition.
Our room is treated as a home away from home for our boys. Family and friends like to gather here to access activities and enjoy each other’s company. Fresh paint, new pin boards, new floorboard to replace old, dated carpet and a great kitchen. Our room has transformed from what was once a basic class room into the safe space for our members to access which they are very proud of. The Kitchen has always been an essential part of every Clontarf Academy room nationwide. This is largely due to most of our budget going toward feeding hungry growing young men. We would like to thank Clontarf Partners Bunnings Warehouse Burleigh Waters Store for their amazing kitchen donation. This has certainly made our cooking and cleaning tasks easier and improve the functionality of our day to day program engagement. A big thanks to Mrs Farrell HOD of Academic Excellence for giving us one of her rooms to claim as our own. Massive shout out to the tireless work of Mrs Rowsell, Mrs Hayman and Mr Capra for making it all possible.
Senior students from Year 10 have sat with Operations Officer Selwyn to discuss SET Planning and being prepared to make a genuine commitment to study. Furthermore recognising that they will need to achieve an appropriate balance in their lives between study commitments, part-time work, family life, social life and leisure activities. Students, parents and teachers will work in partnership to assist every learner to make informed decisions about their learning and future pathways. This assists Director Anthony Mitchell and Employment Officer Jordan Atkins when working closely with Years 11 & 12 students not only find a career path but one they will enjoy long term. With their time at school getting shorter for our current senior group, conversations and steps are being put in place to secure post school employment and or study. Week 8 we will hold our very first PBC Clontarf Employment Forum where we will host local and national partners in a speed dating style morning to discuss the workforce and opportunities within.

PBC Academy Director
Basketball
As always, the basketball matchup between the teachers and students proved to be full of excitement. Specials guest flew in from everywhere with police officer Dave and Uncle Drew Maccan making surprise appearances. The teachers had a slow start with Ella Brow and Kye Mills making them pay through easy buckets. Casey Walker’s ability to draw in the teachers on defence and find the open player was pretty to watch. As the game went on Mr “MVP” Patison and Mr Pasley started to make it rain. Mr Brown’s trick passes and Mr Johnstone’s first ever 3-pointer were some notable moments. The teachers went on to win 39-25, notching a convincing win to put the teachers comfortably in front for the week.
Football
After losing the 2019 edition of the teacher vs student match for the first time in decades the teachers were out for revenge in 2020.
After a stirring pre-game speech by Mr McCullagh the teachers started the much better of the two sides and took a well deserved lead through Mr Patison. Slowly the students worked their way back into the game and equalised through Eli Hughes and then took the lead through an Isaak Sikiric screamer. Soon after Mr Morley was denied a blatant penalty by referee Mr Capra and the students looked to be heading towards victory. Mr Patison was the man of the moment equalising with his second strike of the match. There was late drama in the 25th minute of injury time when the students were through on goal with the goal at their mercy, however Mr Moakes produced an unbelievable goal line clearance to salvage a 2-2 draw for the teachers.
Netball
The Year 12 girls once again showed their domination over the teachers in the annual Student Teacher Netball game. Brooke Swindells and Shiphrah Lemusu led the students through the centre of the court, controlling play easily. The somewhat confused teachers did their best to keep up, but Taira Price-Williams put on an absolute shooting master class nailing goals from all over the circle. The students took a narrow 3 point lead into the first break, but the teachers remained hopeful. Mr Patison and Mr Morley must be commended and Mr Darnett showed that his AFL skills could be easily transferred to the netty court. The second half was a physical affair, with Bronte Dwight sending Mr Johnstone off for a HIA following a sneaky headbutt and the students consolidate the scoreboard. Tiarah Taurimo and Phoebe Mueller turned plenty of ball over in defence and Taylah Boucher capitalised at the other end. Well done to all the Year 12 netballers. The Students and Netball were certainly the winners in 2020.
Touch Footy
The annual Student v Teacher touch football game was once again an epic battle of Game of Throne proportions. After a timid start, the Year 11 and 12 girls from the Senior Sport Ex Touch Football program stepped up and really made the teachers and referee Mr Capra work very hard. Emily Phillips scored a great try where she made Mr Russell look very slow, Malia Morgan dominated a few teachers in the touch, Shana Tudehope threw some great long balls and the team as a whole showed a lot of the resilience and skill. But in the end they couldn't combat the electric footwork of Mr Johnstone, the hole hitting of Mr Patison, the elusiveness of Mr Morley and the tenacity of Mrs McCormack with the teachers coming out winners 7-5.

You can help save Nixon's life! Nixon is only 4 years old and currently in treatment for relapsed Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a very aggressive childhood cancer. At the end of November 2020, we need to get Nixon to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York for a vaccine treatment against Neuroblastoma.
Nixon has less than 20% chance of surviving the next 4 years without this treatment. However his survival rate will increase to up-to 80% after the vaccine treatment in New York!
The costs associated with this vaccine trial is AU$350,000. The hospital fees alone are AU$232,000. Click the link to read more about Nixon. To raise funds we are holding a Multidraw Raffle with over $30,000 worth of prizes to be Won! Tickets are $10 each entry.
Spark their Future
To support parents and carers of young people, the department has released the evidence-based Spark their Future website. This website provides engaging, non-confronting information and support to help parents keep their child engaged with learning and education pathways.
Articles have been developed through extensive research and in collaboration with subject matter experts, including guidance officers and behaviour experts, and other agencies, such as the Queensland Family and Child Commission and the non-state schooling sectors, to develop joint articles featuring education and youth policy leaders.
Articles are targeted at parents of teenagers, when disengagement is most prominent, and upper primary students, when signs of disengagement begin to emerge.

Are you prepared for bushfire season?
Last bushfire season was one of the worst ever, so it’s important to create a bushfire survival plan so you and your loved ones are prepared if bushfires strike again.
There are simple steps you can take to prepare, like clearing gutters, reducing vegetation around your home and ensuring there is adequate access to your property.
During bushfire season, it's important to know what's going on in your area. Even if you don't live anywhere near bushland, bushfires can affect you while you're on holidays or travelling.
Check if your postcode is at risk at the QFES website.
