Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpgLast Tuesday night witnessed 13 brave and dedicated students get up in front of an audience of 200 people to do a stand-up comedy routine. The students have been working with Mandy Nolan, a national comedian in workshops over the past four weeks. Tugan Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) sponsored the workshops on application by Ms Erin Hull. The students were brilliant in their routines which included observational humour, political satire and joys of growing up in a digital age. Mandy and guest comedian Greg Sullivan also performed on the night. Well done to all those involved.

You may be aware that the government has committed to air-conditioning all classrooms by the end of 2022. Our scoping paperwork arrived on Friday. We will turn this around as quickly as possible in the attempt to secure our classroom upgrades asap. With the air-conditioning commitment comes more solar panels (another government initiative) for the school, hopefully neutralising or at least partially off-setting a possible power consumption increase.

The school Musical Opening Night Performance is only a few Friday’s away on March 20.  To accommodate the larger production we are off to Twin Towns.  More information about tickets, dates and times are available from www.twintowns.com.au/showroom.

Thank you to the new families who have given us such great feedback about how their young person has transitioned to PBC. It is pleasing to hear how happy students are feeling about being welcomed into the PBC family which has been passed on by Sue Murray our Junior Secondary student services officer.

Year 8 and 9 parents were welcomed at our first OPTIMA assemblies for the year where we recognised achievement from Semester 2 2019. The timing of this is perfect as students reflect on their goals for 2020 and what they need to do to be successful at PBC. There is so much support for students at PBC and we know this is backed up by your efforts with your young person. Identifying goals with students helps us to focus our energies on what really matters and what will make the difference in their next step to improvement.

In the next few weeks during CARE we are focusing on our strengths still. This time of term is when the rubber starts to hit the road so attitude plays a big part in student success. You can check on this attitude through their self-talk or mind set.

Language choices at tough times when you are encouraging your young person can make a big difference. I really like this set of simple swaps below to talk to them about and to try;

INSTEAD OF …

TRY THINKING….

I’m not good at this

What am I missing?

It’s good enough

Is this really my best work?

I got it wrong

Mistakes help me learn

I just can’t do this

I can train myself to do this

The other thing to consider when talking to your young person is research indicates that a ratio of 5:1 positive to negative interactions, both verbal and nonverbal, is what is required to encourage a growth mindset. At school we are challenging ourselves to have this reflected not only in our classrooms but in our ways of working together as a professional workgroup.

This week members of our core teaching team have had collaborative planning time to enhance their understanding of curriculum and the assessment standards so that they can help your child to be successful in their learning.

Digital Footprint

We all have a responsibility to reinforce to our Junior Secondary students when using social media messages should be positive, respectful and safe so they can protect their digital footprint for later in life especially when part-time employment may be an option. Year 7 students predominantly favour Snapchat while Year 8 use Instagram. As parent/caregivers it is important to read the terms and conditions of each digital platform as many students may be in breach of age limits for using different platforms. Students are also reminded that using social media to photograph or film students at school, share and post may result in a suspension.

Year 12 ATAR students’ workshop

Succeeding in Senior and Maximising ATAR

All Year 12 ATAR students (those doing 4 General Subjects) are strongly encouraged to attend a workshop next Wednesday 4 March from 3:15 to 4:45pm in the top floor of the library. This session on "How to succeed in Senior and Maximise ATAR scores" is offered as a means of improving the tertiary pathways of our students. Steve McCabe from Mighty Minds will present the session. All ATAR eligible students are expected to attend if possible at this late notice. Non ATAR students studying General subjects are welcome but not required to attend.

Assessment

  • Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website. Click on the curriculum tab and then under testing and assessment. Students can also download this information from the student drive on the school’s network. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.
  • The Year 11 exam timetable has also been loaded on the school website. Year 11 students do not have a shutdown this term and are required to attend school every day. All Year 11 assessment will be finalised in Week 7 and 8 of Term 1. Year 11 students will commence new work in Weeks 8 and 9 of this term. Students need to ensure that they appropriately managing their time and do not leave study and assignments to the last minute as they will have numerous assessment items due in week 7 and 8.
  • Parents are reminded that exams will be in Week 10 at the end of each term for Years 10 and 12. Please see school website for a published schedule of assessment for 10s, 11s and 12s. This assessment schedule has been published in school newsletters, assemblies, information nights, social media and daily notices on numerous occasions since mid-2019. As per the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority guidelines and handbooks, family holidays are not grounds for missing assessment or exams.
  • All students and parents need to be aware of the Assessment Policy at the school to coincide with the new QCE system. The policy has been published on the school website. As per the previous policy assessment such as assignments etc. are due at 9:00 am on the due date and teachers must make a decision on the evidence which has been submitted at that time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date. This policy has some changes in regards to special provision which has had a terminology change to Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA); please refer to the published document for more detailed information.

Year 10

  • Year 10 students are again reminded that their results in Semester 1 will determine their pathway and subject availability in Years 11 and 12. To study an ATAR pathway students need to be achieving at least a B level in English and Maths. If students wish to study senior Science subjects they also need to be achieving at least a B level in Year 10 Science, (Academic Excellence students will have slightly different cut offs).
  • Year 10s are also reminded that they can commence School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATS) in Year 10. These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, up to 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options.

Year 11 students

  • Year 11 students will need to have very good time management in 2019 as the units for each subject are only 7 weeks in length including assessment.
  • In the new QCE unit credits are banked into each students learning account at the end of each unit as opposed to the end of Year 12 in the old system. The implication for this is that students who are not engaged in learning and perform poorly in a number of subjects could find themselves ineligible for the QCE as early as week as Week 5 Term 2 (20 May). Students have been repeatedly reminded of this and will need to ensure that they are actively engaged in all classes at all times.
  • Many students will have completed traineeships and higher VET certificates before they sit external exams in November of 2021. This will provide students with extra QCE points and help ensure that they get the QCE even if they have a poor external exam. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block to register for a traineeship.
  • Any current Year 11 student wishing to commence a Diploma of Business course on a Wednesday afternoon should contact Mr McDougall.

Useful websites

  • The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority has created a new website. This is a great source of information on the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Senior Education Training (SET) Plan, future pathways, subjects and assessment.
  • The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre has released a new tertiary course search engine. This is a new National higher education admissions platform which will be useful for students researching nationwide tertiary options.
  • Griffith University has updated their admissions pathways. This document highlights the large range of courses that students can apply for a Griffith University with VET qualifications such as Certificate III, IV or Diploma in 2020.

Health camp 2020

Recently, our class of 21 eager year 11 students, who undertake health as one of their senior ATAR subjects, ventured off to Health Camp in the Currumbin Valley.  The students knew that the camp aligned heavily with their current unit of resilience, but they had no idea how difficult some of the tasks would be and how they would be tested.  The first test of many was to remove all technology and thus all connection to the outside world and support networks.

Our 21 brave students hiked for almost 9 hours and 15kms on their first day, and continued the physical challenges by kayaking 9kms the next day.  The camp focused on a Rights of Passage (ROP) approach and how young people need a ROP to help facilitate a growth or change in a person’s belief, identity, values and sense of self.  This process can support a transition into adulthood and help to equip young people with the confidence they need to tackle challenges in life.

The camp was run by The Tallebudgera Outdoor Education Centre and the Farm School, their professionalism and organisation of this quality camp made it a resounding success.  The students and teachers returned with a feeling of comradery, a renewed abundant belief and memories of a camp that was amazing.

HPE week (Wk6 2-6 March)

Students get to challenge a HPE teacher and win – each day there will be a challenge against a HPE teacher. Prizes for the best student effort and for beating the teacher. All challenges at first break.

  1. Monday – free throws versus Ms Schatz (in the hall)
  2. Tuesday – frog squats versus Mr Maccan (in the hall)
  3. Thursday – Goal kicks (football) versus Mr Morley (back fields)
  4. Friday – golf short game (chipping) versus Mr Davis (oval near the hall)

On Wednesday there is a student presentation where a lucky door prize will be offered.

Advice for supporting mental health - Parent Session

schedule.png

To rise every day mentally stronger takes a similar focus to improving physical strength. We all need hints and tips to use, and to apply effort to become stronger. Building strength results in increased capability to be resilient and to recover from stressors in our lives.

This session is about hearing advice from parents to parents about supporting children to build mental strength, to be held at the Trade Training Centre on Wednesday 4 March 6:00pm.

Speakers will include;
• Community Awareness Officer (Headspace)
• Director (Heal.Ed Tribe)
• PBC Student Welfare Team
• Parents with children on a recovery journey

All children and adolescents experience anxiety and stress in their lives. For some, these experiences can result in barriers to achievement, accomplishment and emotional positivity. This session will provide parents with advice that will enable them to support the building of mental strength in their children’s lives. The advice is from parents who have supported children through a mental illness recovery journey and the student welfare team from PBC. This is a free event. RSVP to events@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au stating REDS in the subject and advising the number attending.

Students will be able to take advantage of another event on the same day, happening during school hours, where they will hear advice from young people who are recovering from mental illness. Ashlee Thomas and Summer Edhouse are recent graduates from PBC. During their time at school they both experienced high levels of anxiety and stress, simultaneously battling an eating disorder. Their frank and honest tellings of their stories will provide young people with advice about managing the voices inside your head and building mental strength. This is a free event for students to attend.

7 Science

Year 7 science students have started the year investigating classification and ways to group organisms based on physical characteristics. Ask your child what a dichotomous key is and what it is used for. Challenge them to a race to find the answers in the activity below:

Activity: Use the dichotomous key to find the scientific name of the 4 insects below.

Dichotomous Key for Insects

1a. Wings are covered by an exoskeleton* — go to step 2.

1b. Wings are not covered by an exoskeleton* — go to step 3.

2a. Body has a round shape — Hippodamia convergens

2b. Body has an elongated shape — Cyphonocerus ruficollis

3a. Wings point outward from the body — Aeshna cyanea

3b. Wings point toward the rear of the body — Apis mellifera

Dichotomos_key.jpg

* Exoskeleton – An external, hard, shell like covering. All arthropods (e.g. insects, spiders and crustaceans) have exoskeletons.

8 Science

If you walked around junior secondary in Week 4 you probably would have heard a lot of shrieking coming from O block. Students in Year 8 have currently been studying a chemistry unit focussing of the particle model of matter. Students were treated with a liquid nitrogen and dry ice demonstration to observe changes of state in matter. With temperatures reaching -196oC and -78oC respectively these chemical compounds are very effective in demonstrating how temperature effects matter. Students watched in awe as teachers demonstrated how carbon dioxide sublimating (changing state from a solid to a gas) can blow up a balloon and when dry ice is placed in hot water it bubbles furiously sublimating to gas due to the sudden change in temperature. The liquid nitrogen was more exciting still with fresh flowers and fruit frozen into a glass like state which shatter when touched, a blown up balloon that shrunk when immersed in the liquid nitrogen and then expanded again when taken out. The piece de resistance and the one that ensured the most amount of astonishment was the de-fuzzed tennis ball which was immersed in liquid nitrogen and thrown against the floor. The result was a loud explosion of glass like rubber in all directions with many students shrieking in surprise!

9 Science

At PBC we are so lucky to have access to the Currumbin Creek and the adjacent nature reserves. This term, Year 9 students have been investigating human impacts on the Beree Badalla reserve. Over the past few weeks students have collected biotic and abiotic data from the reserve to determine the overall health of the ecosystem. A research report detailing overall findings has been started. Students will complete an ongoing draft for this assignment with the final research reports due in Week 8.

On 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 25 young PBC female STEM enthusiasts were invited to partake in a breakfast and livestream Q&A with three leading women in science. The event was hosted by QUT with the discussion being led by Professor Kerrie Wilson amongst special guests Dr Cecile Godde, Dr Susanna Cramb and Dr Yanni Chin. These women have contributed to the environmental and agricultural sciences, as well as health and biomedical innovation. PBC was one of nine schools livestreaming the event, with many others present at the panel. Throughout the event, the women discussed their journey in STEM and how it has shaped them into the people they are today. Students present at the panel were invited to ask questions about the special guests’ journeys and how their experience could benefit the emerging generation of women in STEM. Overall, the event was incredibly rewarding and helped many of us see potential career ideas for the future. This day is essential to recognising the critical role women and girls play in science.

Huge congratulations to Daniel Bray (Yr 9) and Aspen Anderson (Yr 8) who both competed in the State Triathlon championships recently in Hervey Bay. Both performing exceptionally well. Aspen finished first in the 14-15 girls race - amazing!

Aspen went on to win the event at the Youth National Series in Davenport, Tasmania! Fantastic effort Aspen.

Soccer

Roar_PD_Copy_.JPG

Thank you to the Brisbane Roar for providing a professional development session to our Soccer Sports Excellence Coaches. Our coaches were educated in the Brisbane Roar’s game model and playing style. Our PBC coaches look forward to implementing this information into our training programs.

On Thursday 27 February we took the PBC year 7 boys Soccer sport excellence squad up to the Brisbane Roar training facility in Logan.

Students toured the training facility, watched the Roar men’s training session, spoke to Brisbane Roar Academy Coaches and met the A league coaches, Robbie Fowler(Liverpool legend and England international) and Tony Grant(Manchester City.) The was an extremely valuable experience for these young players with an opportunity to meet the A League players including club captain Tom Aldred. Thanks to Warren Moon(Brisbane Roar Academy General Manager) for his continued support of the Sport Excellence Premier League Schools for organising this day.

AFL - Year 7 Schools of Excellence Gala Day Champions

Our Year 7 AFL team had their first opportunity to represent the PBC REDS at their recent gala day involving all the schools of excellence in south east Queensland.

The boys went through the day undefeated in their four pool games defeating Park Ridge, Pacific Pines, Narangba Valley and Woodcrest. This qualified the team for the Grand Final against Helensvale. The boys played a very disciplined, free flowing game plan and went on to become convincing winners 8-3-51 to 2-1-13.

The boys should be publicly congratulated for their behaviour throughout the day and the pride they took in representing the school. The group’s dynamics of being team orientated was commendable. Also a huge shout out to the parents who not only attended the day but assisted throughout the day as team managers. Your help was most welcome.

Junior Secondary

Senior Secondary

The PBC swimming carnival has always been an outstanding event with 2020 being no different. This year we saw plenty of action inside the pool with fast-paced, photo finish races along with the insatiable fun that is the inflatables. A popular event is the Ironwoman and Ironman resulting in some fantastic competition and some unexpected winners. Over the 2 days, Phoenicians were the overall victors with the Athenians, Spartans and Vikings placing respectively. Congratulations to everyone that was a part of the spectacular event.

Over 4 weeks, 14 PBC students took part in Mandy Nolan's 'Funny Kids Comedy Writing Workshops'. These 90 minute workshops plus 1-1 writing time and rehearsal all led to students each developing their own, unique stand up comedy set. Massive thanks to Bendigo Bank, Tugun Community Branch for helping to make this all happen!

On Tuesday night, ALL 14 students rocked up to the PBC Theatre and ALL 14 students performed their material - to a 200-strong supportive crowd of parents, teachers, support staff and peers. Most comics doing their first ever gig only play to a handful of people in the back room of a cafe or bar. The support received for PBC's first ever gig was absolutely incredible.

What a show! All 14 Reds had the crowd cracking up with laughter, some have even mentioned sore cheeks and tummies and that they haven't had such a great night in ages. A night to remember for so many reasons; students getting up and having a go, being able to celebrate student success and raising over $700 for Beyond Blue.

One of the best things in teaching is seeing your students experience success; even in a small way but for some of these participants it was a massive milestone. What they accomplished in a few short weeks is something many adults three times their age would never dream of doing - it took serious guts!

Students will now head to HOTA next Tuesday to participate in another workshop with Melbourne International Comedy Festival and compete in the national Class Clowns Comedy Competition. Best of luck guys!

Feedback for PBC's Comedy Night...

“I wanted to send a quick congratulations to you and the amazing kids at PBC. My partner and I had a great night, with some very sore laughing muscles afterwards. Great job!” – Sam Besmehn-Burt, HOTA

Hi Erin - thanks so much for the opportunity of working with the kids. I was so proud of them and so impressed with the work you put in to make it happen. I think you have some real stand outs there - Ryan leaned over to me after his show and said ‘I didn’t hate it at all, it was really fantastic.’ So glad the kids could have such affirming experiences- the final performance really teaches them more than you ever could in a class setting - I think they reach that point and they finally ‘get’ it! Tell the kids I was so proud of them, how confident they were even when they were nervous and how they just owned the stage. It was clear how funny they were in that room last night and their timing was absolutely professional! - Mandy Nolan

Last Thursday night 27 February, the inaugural Growing Good Men event was held at PBC in our new Library Function room.

The event had over 260 people including Parents, staff, students and interested community members attend to ‘Start Conversations that Count’.

Our Panel of guests included Ex-World Champion Surfer Mark Occhilupo, Author and Journalist Tim Baker, Rugby League Legend John Lang and Clinical Child Psychologist Ian Nussey. Alumni Tom Herschell was our key note speaker and he spoke about his work within his organisation ‘Find Your Feet’. Tom runs workshops across Australia helping men of all ages develop their Emotional Muscle.

Tom also ran workshops for PBC boys in conjunction with the event over the course of the whole week. The workshops entitled “Challenge the Title of Man” were both challenging and rewarding for the boys who took part. One young man told us it was “the best thing I’ve done in my life”.

Special thanks to Bendigo Bank Tugun Community branch and The Suns AFL Club for their support of the event along with the students who performed, catered for the guests, provided entertainment and helped on the night.

The feedback from the week showed a clear wish that this event should occur again and that there be follow up work from Tom. We will continue to have “Conversations that Count” and help our young men grow to be better Men.
