Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpg

Recently I have had the opportunity to work with some of our current and former school leaders and high achievers. School Captains, Abi Houston and Toby Mayes and I attended a community and civic reception with the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency Paul de Jersey on the Gold Coast. The Governor outlined the civic and commercial opportunities of the Gold Coast before spending time discussing PBC with Abi and Toby. The Governor also discussed what the future holds for our School Captains.

Mitch Kennedy, Deputy Principal – Senior School and I were invited to present a speech to recognise the Tugun Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) Scholarship Awards of $5000 that were presented to Emily Ireland and Taj Van der Werff. The list of Emily’s achievements at PBC and the community is truly impressive and Taj’s academic results are of the highest order. We congratulate Taj and Emily on their scholarships and wish them well in their future endeavours. I would also like to thank Tugun Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) for their continued sponsorship of our school, our students and the local community.

The new Library +Plus Precinct continues to be constructed on time. This $11 million project is really starting to take shape. In order to make the building multi-purpose and open for community use, the P&C have borrowed $1 million. In order to service this loan they are holding a Gala Night on Saturday 25 May 2019 at the school. Please check out our Facebook page, website and this newsletter for further details on how to attend. We are also encouraging sponsorship of the building through the tax deductable P&C Building Fund and we are open to discussions around naming rights for the building itself.

It was great to witness one of our Year 11 classes partnering with Broad Construction to utilise the current construction work being undertaken at the school as an opportunity to further explore the construction industry. Work Place Health and Safety Officer and Construction Manager, Shaun spent time with the students discussing all things construction. The students were extremely engaged, asking many questions relating to the fields of work that they are looking at for the future.

You may be aware that Surfside Buses and Translink have recently been in media outlining the revenue that they are losing through school student fair evasion. We have been informed that ticket inspectors will be having an increased presence on the buses to prevent fair evasion. Please talk to your child about the need to have either a valid bus pass or ticket for the bus. We have discussed this issue with the students at school through their Care Classes and at the year level assemblies. Please note that Surfside Bus Passes are now awaiting collection from Student Services. It your student has applied for one please ask them to see Student Services.

The last PBC Alliance Breakfast, held on International Women’s Day, was an informative and successful event with over 70 local businesses in attendance. PBC is fortunate to be represented at all three levels of government by successful female politicians who were present on the day to speak to the audience and our STEM students. Hon Karen Andrews attended the new E Block Biology Lab with STEM students to discuss all things Science and Engineering. The Hospitality and Catering students excelled in catering for the event and they are presenting with a deal of professionalism and skill that would rival private businesses. The Alliance Breakfast occurred in an environment where both tuckshops had just been vandalised and “trashed” so I would like to thank my staff who responded efficiently and effectively to ensure that the school population had access to canteen facilities on the day and that our breakfast event was successful.

I am on long service leave for the last week of this term and first week of next term. Anita Sgalippa will be the executive principal in my absence. Have a great Easter break.

Regards,
Chris Capra
Executive Principal

CRICOS Provider Name: The Queensland Department of Education trading as Education Queensland International (EQI) CRICOS Provider Number 00608A

Our Senior School students have now completed their first wave of assessment for the year, with Years 10 and 12 recently successfully finishing their shutdown exams and Year 11 navigating their first assessment period under the new SATE system.

Congratulations to all of our hard working students for their application to assessment during this period and their efforts across all subjects. Of particular mention should be the application of our Year 12 QCS students who have recently finished 2 intense days of QCS Master Classes and practice exams in preparation for QCS later in the year.

Please be aware that all student reports will be sent to parents in week 10. These reports will include information on Parent Teacher Conferences which will be held from Tuesday to Thursday, 7 - 8 May.

Winter Uniform

As Term 2 and winter approaches, please be reminded of our full-school winter uniform expectations.

  • Only the PBC navy blue/knit jumper or the blue or red PBC jacket with school logo is to be worn.
  • Year 12 Senior Jerseys will be distributed early Term 2. These need to be worn with full school uniform underneath.
  • PBC navy blue track pants with the white stripe and logo can be worn.
  • Undershirts/singlets can be worn as long as they are not visible. All are to be short-sleeved and tucked in.

The above uniforms are available for purchase from the uniform shop now. No non-school jumpers are to be worn.

End of term

Parents and students are reminded that Term 2 work is being completed in classes and that students should be attending all classes up to and including Friday 5 April 2019.

Performance Monitoring

Student results will be analysed and reviewed at the end of term. All students need to demonstrate that they are actively involved in the learning process by passing at least 5 of their 6 classes. This is a basic requirement for continued enrolment in Year 11 and 12. Students with poor academic performance will enter the performance monitoring process.

This may mean a change of pathway for Year 12 students to ensure that they are eligible to receive the Queensland Certificate of Education at the end of Year 12.

Year 11 students need to complete Unit 1 before subject changes can be made (subject to timetable availability). There may be limited changes for some student mid Unit however this may require the student to do extra assessment in their new class.

Assessment dates

Year 11 students will have their end of Unit 1 assessment completed during Weeks 4 and 5 of next term (all finalised by 21 May). Once again students will need to prioritise and plan accordingly as they will have numerous assessment items due at the same time. Year 10 and 12 students will have exam shutdown at the end of week 8 and start of week 9 of next term 13-19 June.

Assessment schedules for each year level have been published on the school website and exam timetables will be published closer to the dates of assessment.

Aurora Training Institute is currently conducting a rolling intake of the Diploma of Business course.

This course is conducted on a Wednesday afternoon at their Robina campus from 1:30pm-4:30pm. The course will take approximately 12 months to complete at a cost of $1800 and provide a variety of tertiary options to students. Currently the Diploma course is equivalent to an OP of 9.

This may be useful for our current Year 12 students who do not have a viable tertiary pathway for 2020. The course is significantly cheaper if students commence it while they are still at school. By completing this course students may be able to apply for mid-year intake to University in 2020. Please contact Mr McDougall or Ms McQueen for more details.

Pathways Centre

Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway.

The Pathways Centre is open before school and first break every day. Drop into Y Block and apply now for a wide variety of Traineeships and/or Job opportunities. The job boards are regularly updated, or speak with our Industry Liaison Officer about turning your current job into a traineeship. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.

Reports will be out soon for term one’s work and so it’s a key time to reflect with your child on the efforts that they are putting in at school each day and on their ‘at home’ tasks and assignment work. Questions to ask them, as a good place to start are...

  1. Do they think they are putting in their best each lesson and all lesson?
  2. What is getting in the way of them doing their best?

Term 1 Reports are interim reports, giving grades to indicate your student’s academic progress as well as their effort and behaviour in each subject. Reports will be emailed home on Friday 5 April 2019. Should your expected emailed Report not arrive by Saturday morning, please contact cgree192@eq.edu.au. If you do not have an email address registered at PBC, then a Report will be mailed home.

Supporting your child with their reading, their weekly spelling list and their regular maths homework are routines that you can help build into the week around their family and extra-curricular commitments. With holidays coming up it’s a great time to encourage some extra reading by visiting the local library or downloading some ebooks. Wider Reading supports the following:

  • Mileage- increasing the amount of reading that occurs in the Middle School ensuring that all students access a variety of texts,
  • Meaning- providing opportunity for students to understand and communicate what they read,
  • Enjoyment- encouraging students to enjoy reading through rating the novels they read.

Parent interviews are on in Week 3 (7, 8 and 9 May) and I would encourage you to meet with your child's teachers to work together to get the best outcomes for them. Along with reflecting on this completed term it's also the time to set some goals for the new term and what actions will be needed to achieve them. I ask our teachers and our students to challenge themselves in this goal setting as it’s from discomfort and pushing ourselves that great growth will come.

NAPLAN

In week 4 our Year 7 and 9s will be sitting NAPLAN exams, these exam results are used by our English and Maths teachers to tailor programs to continue to build on the literacy and numeracy skills as the students move on to the next year level. At PBC we also value these tests as research has shown that they are the best indicator of future academic success and of university entrance exam scores. We are encouraging students to follow our motto of doing their best when it comes to these exams. Our staff and those at the primary schools have been working on building the skills needed for these exams for years but there are little things that can be done in these last few weeks.

Exams are one of those times in life where we have to prepare for our best performance a bit like a job interview or a grand final. Yes there is stress in these moments and it’s important to talk to your child and share how you manage yourself in a situation where you have to bring your best performance. Other factors that will help, that as a parent you can support them with, will be getting enough sleep, eating healthily, doing some physical activity and not over scheduling them in the lead up.

The NAPLAN program is as follows:

Tuesday 14 May, periods 1 and 2. Normal classes periods 3 and 4.

Wednesday 15 May Period 1 only.

Thursday 16 May Period 1 only.

A ‘catch-up’ day for absent students is on Friday 17 May, to allow students who may have been ill during the week to complete the full program of tests.

All parents of Year 7 and 9 students should have received a letter (sent as an email attachment) concerning NAPLAN and parents of students supported by the Inclusive Practices Department should also have had separate contact from HOD Tammy Burn.

If your child has a recognised anxiety disorder which could be triggered by this type of event or you have any concerns about your child sitting NAPLAN please contact the HOD Middle School, Sharon Hillcoat (tel. 5525 9340) about whether withdrawal from the exams may be appropriate. Contact Anita Sgalippa, Principal Middle School if you any have further questions.

In March this year, PBC competed at the Model United Nations Assembly. PBC entered two teams of Year 11 and Year 12 students who put their hands up to spend a very long Saturday arguing the pros and cons of UN resolutions alongside 30 other teams from across the district at the Tweed Community Centre.

Every year, Rotary organises and hosts MUNA. Schools adopt a country, dress in their national costume, attend the flag ceremony and then debate the merit of a range of resolutions from that country’s perspective, chaired by the Secretary General. Teams are expected to research the physical, political and cultural aspects of their country. They must consider the arguments for and against the resolution from other nations and dispute or support their claims.

This year, students debated the merits of:

  • Regulating international migration
  • Regulating International trade
  • Protection of global climate for the present and future generations of humankind

PBC were a stand out due to their ability to work as a team, respond to the statements made by other nations, and use of philosophy and reason to add weight to their arguments. Robbie James earned runner up for best speaker and Syria came third overall.

Academic Excellence

Surf League

Congratulations to the 70 PBC students that competed at the University of Queensland Schools State Surf League Championships. It was a great event with students competing against schools from across Queensland. The location change to Kurrawa didn’t stop the REDS from dominating and taking home the state shield for the 3rd year in a row. Thanks to the organisers, parents and athletes for all their involvement. We look forward to defending our title again next year.

Track

Earlier in March Aspen Anderson (Year 7) and Sam McAuliffe (Year 11) competed at the State Schools Triathlon in Hervey Bay. Aspen competed in the 13-14 girls race and came away with an excellent SILVER medal! Sam competed in the open men’s event and came overall 6th position. A fantastic achievement by both students. Aspen and Sam will now go on to represent Queensland at the National Schools Triathlon Championship in April. Good luck to both of you.

Kayak

Daniel Hardwick Year 10 (Kayak/Surf League Sports Excellence) competed at the 2019 Paddle Australia Canoe Sprint National Championships at Champion Lakes in Perth 6-10 March 2019.

Alumni Tom, Jackson and Jordan are all aiming for a spot on the 2020 Toyoko Olympics Team. If all successful in the next few months of racing this will be exciting to have three potential PBC alumni competing at the Olympics just in kayaking.

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that PBC is planning a Study Tour to Spain in 2019 during the September holiday period. This tour will broaden student horizons, allow students to be immersed in the culture and language of Spain, and will help to develop personal independence and maturity. They will return home willing to do all manner of tasks such as cleaning their own rooms. We can only hope! Participants will meet new friends and have a lot of fun.

Sustainability Comp

The InterHouse Sustainability competition was aimed at promoting sustainable practices both at school and at home. The competition required students to submit a photo showing how they contribute positively to their community and environment. Every entrant earned two participation points towards the House Cup Competition and was posted on our Instagram competition page for other students to vote. Participation was high with the Vikings and Athenians leading the way in demonstrating their commitment to a more sustainable lifestyle.

There were (many) entries with students showing off their reusable drink bottles, rather than single use plastic bottles, as well as many contributions of bottles to our blue Container Refund Scheme bins around the school. Teachers showed off their coffee keep-cups! Comp organisers, Care class A1S, voted on the most unique photos with Ashlinn RatoniAlana EdwardsLeilani NieldJae Brown and Neroli Light-Law announced as winners. These students submitted photos of their own compost heaps and veggie gardens at home, metal straws, reusable shopping bags (with a very cute doggo) and keep cups in use in the community.

Congratulations to these students who have picked themselves up great prizes such as surfboard fins (made from recycled plastics collected from the ocean) and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Passes.

A huge thank you to A1S, Ms Ivey, A3M and Mr Ford for all of their efforts in helping organise this competition. Also a huge shout out to Five Oceans Co. who supplied the surfboard fins as prizes and to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for supported this competition also!

Overall positions according to ‘most likes’ were 1st Vikings, 2nd Athenians, 3rd Phoenicians and 4th Spartans.

Keep up all the great work PBC, and don’t forget out last Container Refund Scheme Drop off day for this term is this Wednesday 3 April. Bring in your bag of bottles/cans/poppers and help the school raise money towards ‘student chosen’ school improvements!

The PBC Spelling Bee

During Term 1 PBC held their annual Spelling Bee competition where students from across the 4 houses put their spelling to the test and competed against each other in a number of preliminary rounds where the top 5 students from each House went into the live grand finals The final consisted of the top 20 students who each had to spell different words in turn. Students were tested to the limit with words such as onomatopoeia, annihilate & surreptitious which had to be spelt correctly out loud. The standard of spelling on show was phenomenal but with all competitions there had to be a winner and the 2019 Spelling Bee champion was Layla Ahern from Vikings House who narrowly beat Hannah Daley in the final 2. Overall positions were 1st Vikings, 2nd Phoenicians, 3rd Spartans & 4th Athenians. Congratulations to Layla and all of the students who took part not only in the final itself but the preliminary rounds, earning important participation points for their House.

Dodge Ball Competition

InterHouse Dodgeball competition took on a new look in 2019 with CARE classes from each house competing to earn the privilege of representing their House. The Vikings and Phoenicians won their way through to the grand final in both the middle and senior school, leaving the Spartans and Athenians to battle it out for minor places.

The Grand Final was held in the Hall during CARE in week 7. A strong crowd of over 200 students were in attendance creating an amazing atmosphere. The Phoenicians were crowned middle school champions in a close fought match. In the highly anticipated senior game the Vikings came out victors in what was a classic game of high intensity dodgeball.

Thank you to all students and teachers who attended and made this a great event.

PBC Cross Country

All students are invited to partake in the annual PBC Cross Country event to be held on Tuesday 2 April. Sports Excellence Students must participate. Non-Sport Ex Students must nominate to run prior to the day, or will not be permitted out of class to run. If you are interested see Mrs Hart in the Hall (S block) staffroom or contact your House Leader. Each entrant gains 2 participation points for their House, so make sure you get involved and support your House!! The Cross Country also determines which students qualify to compete at Oceanic trials.

The students each received vouchers for a discount at Storm Cycles Tugun and two students won a $100 gift certificate. We still need more students wearing helmets and obeying road rules. It is great to see so many students riding to school.
