Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris_Copy_.jpg

2019 Next Step survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2018. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2019.

Further information on Next Step is available online at www.qld.gov.au/nextstep or on toll free telephone 1800 068 587.

Regards,

Chris Capra

2019 International Women’s Day Breakfast

This week our Dean of Students - Year 12, Jennifer Attard, had the pleasure of attending the International Women’s Day Youth Leadership Breakfast with five of our most outstanding Year 12 students. Our future leaders enjoyed listening to a diverse range of highly successful local women share their advice on how to dream big, work hard, and align yourself with successful people in order to achieve your goals. Abi Houston (School Captain), Grace Selby (Vice Captain) Kaitlyn Byrne (House Prefect Vikings) and Tiarne Hughes (House Prefect Phoenicians) were extremely proud of their peer, Year 12 student Lauren Alderton, who was awarded the 2019 Youth Leadership Award for her outstanding contribution to community service. Lauren volunteers her time at the Animal Welfare League in Coombabah. Since beginning in 2015, Lauren has accumulated 580 hours of community service!

We also congratulate Lauren on recently winning another award for the 2019 Youth Leadership Program. Secondary schools and colleges were invited to nominate an outstanding student who displays commitment and talent both in school and in the greater community. Congratulations to Lauren Alderton on winning the Youth Leadership Community Service Award.

"AWL has taught me a lot about myself and my passions and I have gained invaluable experience that has helped me with jobs and future pathways. I highly recommend volunteering at a cause close to your heart, it really does make a difference to the community."

National Day of Action Against Bullying

PBC is a proud supporter of the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. On Friday 15 March, all students took a moment to identify, reflect and recognise the impact of bullying in our school and wider community. PBC is proud of the zero tolerance policy we have regarding identified bullying across our school and our proactive strategies to minimise this. Our Middle School Student Council created a scenario-driven video that was shown during CARE that continued to promote this positive anti-bullying message.

Students and community members are encouraged to continue using Stymie, www.Stymie.com.au as our anonymous reporting process for any student concerns.

Ride2School Day

IMG_1226_Copy_.JPG

Friday 22 March is National Ride2School Day – promoting the benefits of riding to work and school as well as safe riding practices. To celebrate this day, PBC is encouraging all students to get behind the initiative and ride their bikes to school. We will also be supported by our wonderful PBC Alliance Partner, StormCycles.

All students who ride their bike to school this Friday, wearing their helmet, will go in the draw to win a $100 StormCycles voucher, as well as plenty of other giveaways. StormCycles will also set up a free bike safety check for all students to drop in to and get their bike checked.

Hopefully we will see plenty of students cycling this Friday 22nd!

Elevate Education Study Skills Parent Information Seminar

Our Elevate Study Skills Parent Information Session was well attended by both parents and students. The presenter shared key strategies that can be utilised at home to support the work of the school in preparing our students for the new SATE system, and in particular, externally-set exams. The questions asked by parents made it highly evident that our students have great support at home. Elevate will return to the school over the course of the year to provide Year 10 and 11 students with sessions in note-taking, time management, reducing stress, working consistently, and practice exam questions.

Assessment

All students need to be aware of the date, room and time of their scheduled exam. During shutdown students only have to attend school for scheduled exams or study sessions. Students must be in full school uniform to sit exams. Students who are studying VET subjects and are not up to date with their competencies will be required to attend school during VET catch up sessions to complete their competencies.

All assessment tasks are due at 9:00am on the due date not during class time. Students who are absent for an exam will need to provide a medical certificate and apply for a change of date with their Head of Department (HOD) on the next day they are at school. Similarly students who are applying for an extension or special consideration will need to download an extension/change of date form from the school website and submit to their relevant HOD at least 48 hours before the due date.

Once shutdown is completed all classes will commence Term 2 work and students are required to attend school up to and including Friday 5 April.

Parents/caregivers and students are reminded that completing English OP (Year 12 2019) or General English or Literature (Year 12 2020) is a pre-requisite for the majority of Universities in Queensland.

Year 11 Assessment

Year 11 students are currently completing assessment for the new QCE. They do not have a shutdown and will have timetabled classes up to and including the last day of term Friday 5 April. Reports will be issued for Year 11s in the last week of term.

Students will finalise their Unit 1 assessment in Week 4/5 of Term 2 in mid-May this year. As per QCAA guidelines students cannot change subjects mid Unit so no subject changes are available to Year 11s until late May.

Year 10 & Year 12 Assessment

Year 10 and 12 students commence shutdown on 21 March (Year 12s) and 22 March (Year 10s). The Senior Assessment Timetable and the School Assessment Policy has been published on the school website.

Students can also down load a copy from the school’s K drive under Curriculum.

Year 10 students are reminded that their academic performance in Semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in Year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

VETis courses

All Senior students are eligible to receive VET in School (VETis) funding to complete a VET certificate that the government deems are in demand. Many students utilise this funding in timetabled classes for example Construction, Health Services, and Hospitality and Fitness classes. Other VETis courses are advertised in the student notices and school newsletter. These may include going to an outside college or provider 1 day per week (e.g. TAFE). Students who are not aiming for a tertiary pathway are particularly encouraged to complete a VETis funded course as this will increase their chance of gaining employment once they leave school. Please contact Ms McQueen in F block if you require more information.

Pathways Centre

Year 10s and 11s are encouraged to register for School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate III qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway.

The Pathways Centre is open before school and at first break every day. Drop into Y Block and apply now for a wide variety of Traineeships and/or Job opportunities. The job boards are regularly updated, or speak with our Industry Liaison Officer about turning your current job into a traineeship. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.

Our students and teachers have reached the tough end of the term. It’s going to be all about hard work, working smart and consistency to get through the last two weeks and all those assessment items. We have been talking to the students about what it means to work hard and show consistency in the classroom.

I am really encouraged by the work that I am seeing occurring in classrooms and the level of detailed feedback that students are receiving from their teachers. This feedback and responding to it is a vital step in improvement of an individual task.

Please encourage your young person to read any feedback on drafts very carefully and ask them if they understand what the teacher is telling them about their attempts.

The other challenging step for middle schoolers is being organised enough to meet those timelines. This is all about the working smarter idea. As a parent staying connected to your young person’s deadlines and coaching them to meet these is one way we can work together in their education. Please discuss with them when their deadlines are and work with them to achieve this around their other at-home commitments.

All these things will allow you to extend your support role in their learning which as a school we are grateful for and value the role you play in this as parents.

Term 1 Reports

Student reports will be emailed home on the last day of term. Please ensure that the email address we have recorded for you is current. Should you not have an email address registered with us, we will post your child’s report home.

Term 1 reports are interim reports. This means that they will indicate a child’s Term 1 achievement, effort and behaviour in each subject with grades only. We encourage you to follow up on this report by attending Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 2, Week 3. Information about how to book for Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent with reports.

Reading for Learning

Students are now counting down to the holidays and ticking off assessment items. It is a very busy time for students and their teachers, with everyone focussed on achieving the best possible results. Attendance every day is critical to maximise learning and academic performance.

At this time, students may be engaging in studying – perhaps for the first time. It is not uncommon for students to complain that they have studied for hours and remember nothing, or that they cannot remember what has happened in the novel they are reading. Education psychologists argue that to maintain ‘memory health’, one must eat and sleep well. It is also essential that students approach their reading with a focussed mindset – avoiding music and other distractions, and being determined to learn.

Beyond these strategies, it is recommended that students remember the acronym ‘SING’.

This means:

S – Stop at the end of each chapter or section. Pause and reflect on what has been read

I – Identify the main point of the story or writing

N – Never mind the details and

G – is for Gist. What is the gist of what has been read?

We know also that having to teach someone else makes learning easier, so have your child explain the chapter or section of work they have read to you.

NAPLAN 2019

At this stage, PBC will be participating in NAPLAN on paper this year, with a view to moving to online testing in the future. Tests will be conducted on 14 to 17 May.

We encourage all students to be part of NAPLAN if they are able to do so, and we make special provisions for students with disabilities. PBC teachers frequently use NAPLAN data to make decisions about differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom. However, students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/caregiver. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.

A formal notification of withdrawal must be received by the school prior to testing. Should you wish for your child to withdraw from NAPLAN, please contact HOD Middle School, Sharon Hillcoat, on shill242@eq.edu.au.

Attendance

The Middle School Attendance target for 2019 is 95%. Students are expected to attend every day, be punctual, and must be present for roll marking at the beginning of every class unless there is a valid excuse for absence. An unacceptable attendance record will lead to disciplinary action. Parent Compulsory Schooling Obligation - Failure to Attend Section 178(4) of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006

Full Day Absence

Parents/caregivers must notify the school and provide an explanation of a student absence by 9:00am on the day of the absence.  Only ONE notification is required.

The priority for notification is:

  1. Text Message0447 100 239 – provide student name, date and reason for absence OR
  2. Emailabsences@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au – provide student name, date and reason for absence OR
  3. Phone – 07 5525 9333 – provide student name, your name, date and reason for absence OR
  4. QParents App

Text messages are sent out to parents at 10:00am to notify you of an unexplained absence. If you receive a text message, you can reply to the message, providing your student name and reason for absence.

IT_News_Copy_.jpgPBC’s One2One Program

With almost all Year 7 students participating in the PBC One2One program students are able to access a wider range of resources than ever before. The new IT platform of technology is enabling teachers to create a wider variety of learning experiences as their students have a reliable and predictable computing device.

If you are a parent/caregiver of a child in Year 7 who is not already in the program, there is still time to participate and pick up a brand new worry free computer.  Contact the Middle School office for a copy of the One2One Learning Program Contract.

Students are doing a wonderful job caring for their computer by ensuring that they have a protective case and are keeping their computer out of harm’s way.  Just a reminder if you haven’t already, to purchase a protective case for your child’s laptop. Also, contact your home insurer to have the new device added onto your policy for additional protection.

This week we have welcomed Miss Lucy Johnstone onto the IT team, Lucy will be the “face” of our student service desk and will be able to assist students with their One2One enquires, network issues including Daymap, and will be providing general assistance. Welcome Lucy!

Finally, IT staff are available to provide computer assistance before and after school as well as lunch times, but not during class time.  The IT Office is located in E block.

Tip of the Week!

Select the default font YOU like to use, not the default font Word wants you to use

Don’t like Calibri or Cambria? Prefer Arial to Times New Roman, or like the modern look of Century Gothic? The best part about Microsoft Word is you can choose the default font — this command differs by version, but the most reliable way is to click Font, select the attributes you want, and then click Default.

Alison Fahlbusch

Head of School

The PBC Leo’s have had a busy start to 2019. We have welcomed quite a few new members and worked with the Sustainability Committee to organise PBC’s Clean Up Australia Day event. We are always looking to recruit more PBC students, especially those that are interested in making a positive impact on the world around them.

Upcoming events:

IGA BBQ (every Saturday)- Come along to Currumbin Fair IGA every Saturday morning, buy a sausage sandwich and help the Leo’s raise money for future projects and charities.

Bunnings BBQ (9 April)- Come and see us in action at Bunnings.  This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year. Please let us know if you would like to help!

Relay for Life (11 May)- The Leo’s are putting together a Relay for Life team and are hoping the school community will join in! You don’t have to be a Leo to participate. Lots of fun, come and do a few laps on 11 May at Miami High School.

Want to join Leo’s?

Come along to our meeting every Tuesday morning from 8:00am in I01 (TTC).

PBC's Library +Plus Project

The Library +Plus project is currently under construction on the location of the old library building. This new learning precinct will enhance school facilities in the form of a purpose built multi-storey facility comprising a modern, welcoming library with much needed additional classrooms and flexible, multipurpose space for students, staff and the broader community. The three-storey building will provide a large covered area at ground level and above, a brand-new library with the latest IT. The top level has nine general learning areas, which can be opened up to create expansive spaces for various teaching layouts, an examination hall and a teacher-training area. This space can also be used for events and functions hosted by students, the school or the community.

The project's construction is on time with the expected completion date being Monday 7 October. Currently the majority of the works are steel formation and concrete pouring. The final level suspended slab is due to be poured late this week. It is anticipated the roof will be constructed after the Easter holidays and this will see an escalation in works being undertaken as internal fit-out commences. Over 200 contractors have been inducted onto the site and on any given day there can be upwards of 80 workers.

The furnishing team has been selected and this group are responsible for the selection and layout of $215,000 worth of furniture.
