From the Exectuive Principal,
Here we are at the end of Term 1 and what an interesting term it has been - full of activity with our junior students participating in NAPLAN and with our community enjoying our Musical – The Wedding Singer, along with interschool sport, Optima Awards, many House activities and now deep into exams.
It has certainly been a term not without challenges with staffing changes, particularly within our Junior School and I would like to thank you for adopting to these changes as we aim to ensure a high quality of education for students.
Through the holidays an area for our families to consider is safety on our roads. The rapid uptake of electric powered bikes and scooters is both exciting and concerning as their extra speed is an additional risk. This has been highlighted by Dr Norman Swan who spoke of the ongoing serious implications which occurred after an accident involving one his children not wearing a helmet. An account of this can be found at:
Wishing you all a fabulous and safe holiday period
Best wishes,
Chris Kern

Congratulations to all students on a great start to 2024, with the completion of Term 1 very much in sight. We'd like to take this opportunity to wish all students the best of luck with final assessment, including Exam blocks across Year 10 and 12 and all families a safe and fulfilling Easter break.
A special mention must be reserved for all students and staff responsible for the outstanding show that was our 2024 musical, "The Wedding Singer". All students across the cast, crew, backstage, lighting and orchestra are to be congratulated for their professionalism, time, and joy they bought to our wider school community across a run of 5 shows. This group continue a fine tradition of outstanding PBC musicals stemming back decades. Thankyou also to all parents and guests who managed to catch the show.

We ask parents, siblings and friends to encourage our graduates to complete the survey to help our school improve senior programs for future students.
As a thank you, participants have the chance to win one of 5 MacBook Airs. Graduates will receive an invitation by mail and may be contacted by phone. For more information about Next Step, visit http://www.qld.gov.au/nextstep.
Assessment
Year 11 students have now completed mid Unit 1 exams and have regular classes for the remained of term. They do not have a shutdown and attendance remains compulsory.
Year 10 students commence shutdown exams on Monday of week 10 of term (March 25 to 28).
Year 12 students commence shutdown exams on Tuesday of week 10 (March 26).
The timetable for senior assessment and the school assessment policy has been published on the school website below:
https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment
All students need to be aware of the date, room, and time of their scheduled exam. During shutdown students only have to attend school for scheduled exams or study sessions.
All assessment tasks are due at 9:00am on the due date not during class time. Students who are absent for an exam will need to provide a medical certificate and apply for a change of date with their HOD on the next day they are at school. Similarly, students who are applying for an extension or special consideration will need to download an extension/change of date form from the school website and submit to their relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date.
Year 12 Essential Maths and English students will also have to complete the statewide Common Internal Assessments (Exams) for these classes early in term 2. Essential Maths is scheduled for Friday April 19 and Essential English is scheduled for Tuesday April 23.
Due to the different timings of assessments and the nature of year 10 term reports and Year 11 and 12 Unit reports; reports will be emailed to parent on the following dates;
Year 10 Term 1 report: Week beginning Monday April 29
Year 11 Unit 1 report: Week beginning Monday June 3
Year 12 Unit 3 report: Week beginning Monday May 6.
Other senior schooling news:
Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, and also opens up a tertiary pathway. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.
Students in Year 10 are reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 semester 1 will determine their pathway options in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science. If students would like to discuss their academic pathways further, they can come to Y Block for assistance.
A reminder that all students in year 10, 11 and 12 are required to register for their QCAA learning account via the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/your-qce-pathway/student-portal-and-learning-account . This is the portal that students will use to access their results and qualifications once they have completed school as well as to check on their progress towards the QCE. Students are also required to complete the Academic Integrity course in the Online Learning section of their portal. This will become a pre-requisite course for the Queensland Certificate of Education.

Last week NAPLAN testing was finished for Years 7 and 9. The students completed digital tests in reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions. Participation levels were typical of a normal school day attendance and we look forward to results to see how students have progressed since two years ago.
Assessment and Reports
Our Junior Secondary students have been working very hard over the last few weeks, completing assessments. It has wonderful to see our students' commitment to applying their knowledge in classrooms. Thank you to our parents who have supported our students through the assessment period, by checking progress against the assessment calendars and encouraging students to put in the extra effort at home. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
The Term 1 Interim Report Cards will be emailed home to parents on the last day of Term 1 (28th March). This report summarises your child's academic progress and effort and behaviour for the first term of the year. At PBC a major focus is being a learner. Hence, we value effort and behaviour ratings on report cards. As a school, we are using the Effort and Behaviour Reporting Matrix to ensure consistency in these ratings across the school. You can find this Matrix on our school website at:
If you have any questions about the report card, please contact your child's class teacher.
Please note that Parent Teacher Interviews will also be available in Term 2 – 7th – 9th May. Class teachers at PBC value partnerships with parents and are happy to work collaboratively to support each student.
New work for Term 2 will commence after assessments are completed.
Staffing Update
Cameron Williams is Acting Deputy Principal of Year 7 whilst Tamara Burns is on leave.
Nick Hiron is Acting HOD Student Engagement.
OPTIMA Rewards
OPTIMA rewards are the foundation of our positive behaviour reinforcement process at PBC. Class teachers reinforce our expected behaviours with OPTIMA Slips. Students then take these slips to our wonderful Miss Tegan in Junior Secondary Student Services in A block. Miss Tegan keeps a tally for each child. When students have accrued a certain number of slips they can access rewards such as ice blocks, $5 tuckshop vouchers, movie tickets and much more.
This term over 1000 OPTIMA slips have been awarded. Congratulations to all students who have been rewarded with an OPTIMA slip in Term 1.

Year 10 and 12 Ancient History Excursion
Recently, Year 10 and 12 PBC Ancient History students attended an excursion to the UQ Antiquities Museum in Brisbane. This excursion provided a unique opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the captivating world of ancient civilizations, particularly focusing on the Roman Empire and the treasures of the Valley of the Kings.
Guided by passionate experts, our students embarked on a journey through time as they explored the wonders of the UQ Antiquities Museum. The museum's extensive collection of artifacts offered a window into the daily lives, beliefs, and achievements of ancient peoples, igniting the curiosity and imagination of our young historians.
One of the highlights of the excursion was the guided Roman Army tour. Students gained an insight into the life of a Roman soldier, from training in the barracks to marching on the battlefield. Students were able to interact with and, in some instances, hold the weaponry that proved vital to life as a Roman soldier.
Additionally, students had the opportunity to participate in a Roman Imperial coinage workshop, where they learned about the significance of currency in the ancient world. Through hands-on activities, they examined authentic Roman coins, deciphered inscriptions, and uncovered the stories behind each piece of currency, gaining insights into trade, economy, and power structures of the time.
Another captivating workshop awaited our students as they explored the mysteries of the Valley of the Kings. Through interactive sessions and engaging discussions, they learned about the pharaohs, tombs, and artifacts of Ancient Egypt, unravelling the secrets of a hypothetical burial ground and its significance in Egyptian history.
This excursion not only complemented our students' classroom learning but also fostered their critical thinking, analytical skills, and appreciation for diverse cultures and civilizations. By immersing themselves in the past, our students gained valuable insights that will enrich their academic journey and broaden their perspectives on the world around them.
Hospitality
The Year 12 Hospitality students recent hosted a remarkable final practical event as part of their assessment. Tasked with inviting another class for an alternate drop two-course lunch. The students went all out, planning every detail from their theme selection to marketing material. Each table was set in a formal setting with carefully curated décor to match their chosen theme, while the menu showcased a delightful array of expertly crafted dishes. Through planning and execution of the event, they demonstrated not only culinary skills but also their skills in event management and teamwork.
Textiles
As the term draws to a close, the Textiles classes for Year 9 and 10 have been buzzing with creativity and innovation. In Year 9, students embarked on an exciting journey of exploration, delving into the world of sewing and fabric decoration techniques. Their main assessment was to design and sew a bag that showcases at least two fabric decoration techniques learned throughout the term.
From mastering basic stitches to experimenting with intricate embellishments, the Year 9 students have embraced the art of textile crafting with enthusiasm and dedication. Each bag reflects not only their newfound skills but also their unique creative flair, making for a delightful showcase of talent and craftsmanship.
Meanwhile, in the Year 10 Textiles class, the focus shifted towards sustainability in the fashion industry – an increasingly pertinent topic in today's world. Students delved deep into the environmental and ethical issues surrounding fashion production and consumption, exploring concepts of upcycling and reuse.
For their assessment task, students were challenged to design an upcycled non-apparel item using preloved clothing and items. Their final product had to be at least 80% made from recycled materials, promoting eco-friendly practices and innovative reuse of resources. Additionally, students were tasked with creating their own swing tag for their product, adding a personalised touch to their sustainability-driven creations.
As the term comes to an end, the Textiles classes for Year 9 and 10 stand as shining examples of creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
Marketta
During weeks 7 and 8, students from Mrs McDonald, Mrs Wyatt, Mr Rambold and Mrs Maher’s classes organised a Marketta event showcasing the amazing food from around the world that they had planned and prepared for staff and students to purchase. It is a wonderful event for the students to work in teams, choose a country, research culture and foods, choose a recipe, adapt the recipe for a large group, apply numeracy skills by costing out the recipe and designing their marketing materials including a logo, signage for the stall and posters. The event was a huge success with many stalls selling out their food products and students and staff happy to eat a multicultural treat. Well done to all of the year 10 food specialisations involved in the event.
PBC Alliance Breakfast
During week 6 the students in the Certificate II & III hospitality classes catered for the first Alliance Business Breakfast of the year. Students have an early start to be ready to serve a delicious hot breakfast to the local business who attend the event to support the school and network with each other. Our students show a dedicated work ethic to this event each term, learning both front & back of house skills.

Read LessOur first PBC Alliance Breakfast held at PBC on March 1st was a smashing success. With it's star studded line up, it was certainly an entertaining breakfast that had guests tapping their feet.
Kicking off with a City of Gold Coast update from Mr Ross Devine, the audience was informed on the development of the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre and what the re-development of the centre will bring to the area.
The theme of the breakfast then turned the spotlight on the Performing Arts, encompassing an enlightening update on all things showbiz with our very own Ms Loren Skyring, and featuring guest speaker PBC Alumni turned professional dancer Ms Cleo Lewis, who beguiled us with her enchanting stories from Paris and her time at Moulin Rouge. Finishing of the Performing Arts lineup were very own cast of the PBC Musical Production of The Wedding Singer, with an exclusive performance by Griffin Light-Law (who played Robbie Hart) and Isla Freer (who played Julia Gulia).
Ms Tracey Kearney from Prestige Service Training also joined us to anounce the winners of the Prestige Service Training Half-Scholarships. Congratulations to Year 11 PBC students Jaz Jovan and Tristan Auffret.
Rounding out the breakfast was Head of Sport and founding Alliance member Mr Neil Mackay, who spoke all things PBC Alliance.
A very special moment was shared with PBC Alliance's long standing supporter Councillor Daphne McDonald who was acknowledged for her contribution to PBC and the Alliance, and the community. Daphne was presented with a gift including an extraordinary artwork title Connecting Community from super talented PBC student Milla Rogers. Thankyou for your support over the years Daphne. I am certain we will continue to your smiling face at many Alliance events in future!
Thanks to all whom attended and made it a fantastic start to 2024! We appreciate your continued support.
See the gallery below for images taken at the breakfast.
What a great way to start 2024, and to get to know the PBC community, then to rub shoulders with the students, staff, local community and business community members. If you are a local business and are looking to support the PBC community, and network with other like minded individuals, come and check out the PBC Alliance Breakfast or head over to PBC Alliance and see what we are all about.
