Executive Principal's Message

Dear PBC Community,

Kern_Chris.jpg

As we head into the holidays and the end of my first month as the Executive Principal, I am amazed daily by the range of fantastic opportunities for students beyond the classroom. I would need to have ten clones of myself to be able to attend all of them. I have been entertained by our drama production, dined at the excellent restaurant week, watched high level sport, educated by the sustainability project, dropped in on the Student Council and Leo’s group and visited the Swell Festival to watch our music excellence student perform.

A highlight that I was impressed by was the quality of speeches delivered by Year 11 students seeking leadership positions in 2024. This was undertaken in front of four hundred peers and staff. Many research findings identify public speaking as a top level fear. Yet these students overcame this. Cooper and Charlotte in their speeches both “encouraged” students to get involved and I did the same when given the chance to address the Year 11 students. There is a difference between attending the school and being part of the school, where you find the courage to challenge yourself, try new things and engage in extra activities. In my experience successful academic students are also busy with other activities.

I wish all students and families an enjoyable holiday. Wishing you safe travels if going away. For our Year 12 students this is their last school holiday followed by a term that will be go by very quickly.

Chris Kern

As Term 3 draws to a close we wish to acknowledge the efforts of all Junior Secondary students across the range of disciplines our school offers. Congratulations to all students who have represented PBC in the Arts, sports, academically and via community service opportunities. For Year 7 students we look forward to celebrating those individuals specifically at our Term 4 OPTIMA Awards and for all students our major celebration is our end of year Junior Secondary Awards Night. To all of our students – thank you for your dedication and commitment to our school and for grabbing the opportunities that exist with both hands, we are very proud of the representatives you have become.

We have been trialling some new processes this term and so if as a parent you have any feedback you are welcome to contact us via the parent support email to let us know how you think those changes have gone from your perspective. We also have a student opinion email so if you hear your child voices an opinion or having an idea about how something could be changed or improved or just to help us understand our students better, please encourage them to drop us a line. Both these emails are directed to relevant staff and should receive a response within 48 hours.

I would also like to acknowledge all the staff who support our Years 7-9 students either socially, academically or with their wellbeing. It really does take a village to raise a child and I hope that you appreciate as much as I do the lengths that staff go to add to the great support that you give your own child. In particular can I thank Mrs Julia Hoy who has been working with us this year, Julia is moving back to primary and has won a position at Miami SS. We wish her all the best and are richer for the experience of having worked with her. This position has been advertised and we hope to be announcing a new DP at the start of next term. Mrs Wendy Wise will be picking up the Year 8 cohort as they would have been moving to work with her next year anyway, so she will be having a handover with Mrs Hoy this week.

Year 9 Work Experience

We wish our Year 9 students all the best as they embark on a week of work experience across a number of workplaces and industries for Week 10. This opportunity offers students a range of skills in a variety of areas and bodes them well for future employment and industry experience. Good luck to all students and thanks to those workplaces who have supported this program. We have had a larger number of students getting their paperwork in on time and fully participating this year. Well done for working with us on this process which will have your child covered should anything go wrong on work experience.

Sign Out Processes

Currently the only sign out processes are either write a note and have your child hand this in to student services or phone the main switch to get a message to student services. We are investigating whether there are more convenient methods for parents, however in the meantime can you please help us and Tegan who is the only worker in our Student Services area manage the demands of our large cohort.

Year 7 Camp

In week 2 of Term 4, a majority of our year 7s will be participating in an action packed 3-day camp at YMCA Camp Warrawee. Students will be involved in a variety of exhilarating outdoor activities which will teach teamwork, problem solving, leadership and resilience. Please ensure that all medical forms are returned to A block student services by end of term so that details can be uploaded to the camp portal. Outstanding balance on invoices are now overdue. Please make final payment by direct deposit or in person at finance (D block).

For students not attending camp school attendance is compulsory as classes will be running as per the students’ timetable. There will be no new learning, however, students will be involved in a variety of literacy and numeracy activities during this time. Regular classes will recommence from Thursday 12 October.

Junior Secondary Academic Reports

Congratulations to our junior students on another great term of effort and behaviour.  Parents/Carers will be emailed the term 3 progress report on the last day of term.

Coolangatta Beach witnessed an exhilarating clash of South East Queensland and Darling Downs academies as 12 teams battled it out for the prestigious title of the Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 Clontarf Beach Rugby Champions of 2023. This annual event not only showcased the remarkable sportsmanship, dedication and Clontarf Spirit of academy members but also celebrated the profound commitment of the Clontarf partners and the community. The coveted prize awaiting the victors was none other than a surfboard trophy, symbolizing their triumph on the sandy pitch.

The competition itself was nothing short of thrilling, with fierce battles and breathtaking plays unfolding on the sun-drenched sand. In the end, the Dalby Academy emerged victorious in the Year 8/9 category, while the Warwick Academy claimed the title in the Year 10/11 division. Their hard-fought victories were not only a testament to their skill but also a testament to the dedication and teamwork that this event embodies. It was clear that this day was about much more than just beach rugby—it was a celebration of community, partnership, and the indomitable spirit of our academy members striving to become an all rounder good bloke on and off the field.

Why am I online?

Research shows it’s often about managing emotions

Wellbeing_T3W10.png

Most of us go online multiple times a day.  Many questions have rightly been asked about its broader consequences for society and the economy. But there remains a simpler question about what motivates people across a range of ages, occupations and cultures to be so absorbed in digital connection. And we can turn this question on ourselves: why am I online?

What are we doing when we go online?

As the American sociologist Erving Goffman pointed out asking “What is it that’s going on here?” about human behaviour can yield answers framed at different levels. These range from our superficial motives to a deeper understanding of what we are “really” doing. Sometimes we might be content to explain our online behaviour in purely practical terms, like checking traffic routes or paying a bill. Other times we might struggle to articulate our reasons for going or remaining online. Why are we continually looking at our phones or computers, when we could be getting on with physical tasks, or exercising, or meditating, or engaging more fully with the people who are physically around us?

The ever-present need to manage our emotions

Theories of the nature and function of emotions are complex and contested. However, it is safe to say they are expressions of felt needs and motivations that arise in us through some fusion of physiology and culture. During a typical day, we often feel a need to alter our emotional state. We may wish to feel more serious about a competitive task or sadder at a funeral. Perhaps we would like to be less sad about events of the past, less angry when meeting an errant family member, or angrier about something we know in our heart is wrong. Digital emotion regulation is becoming increasingly common in our everyday lives. One way to understand our frequent immersions into online experience is to see them as acts within a broader scheme of managing such daily emotional demands. Indeed, in earlier research we found up to half of all smartphone use may be for the purpose of emotional regulation.

Digital technologies are becoming key tools of emotion regulation

Over the pandemic lockdowns of 2020–21 in Melbourne, Australia, we investigated how digital technologies are becoming key tools of emotion regulation. We were surprised to find that people readily talked of their technology use in these emotion-managing terms. Occasionally, this involved specially designed apps, for mindfulness and so on. But more often people relied on mundane tools, such as using social media alongside Zoom to combat feelings of boredom or isolation, browsing for “retail therapy”, playing phone games to de-stress, and searching online to alleviate anxiety about world events.

Playing games to unwind after work is one of many ways people use digital technology for emotion regulation. To some extent, these uses of digital technology can be seen as re-packaging traditional methods of emotion management, such as listening to music, strengthening social connections, or enjoying the company of animals. Indeed, people in our study used digital technologies to enact familiar strategies, such as immersion in selected situations, seeking distractions, and reappraising what a situation means. However, we also found indications that digital tools are changing the intensity and nature of how we regulate emotions. They provide emotional resources that are nearly always available, and virtual situations can be accessed, juxtaposed and navigated more deftly than their physical counterparts. Some participants in our study described how they built what we called “emotional toolkits”. These are collections of digital resources ready to be deployed when needed, each for a particular emotional effect.

A new kind of digital emotional intelligence

None of this is to say emotion regulation is automatically and always a good thing. It can be a means of avoiding important and meaningful endeavours and it can itself become dysfunctional. In our study of a small sample of Melburnians, we found that although digital applications appeared to be generally effective in this role, they are volatile and can lead to unpredictable emotional outcomes. A search for energising music or reassuring social contact, for example, can produce random or unwanted results. A new kind of digital emotional intelligence might be needed to effectively navigate digital emotional landscapes.

An historic shift in everyday life

Returning to the question: what am I doing online? Emotion regulation may well be part of the answer. You may be online for valid instrumental reasons. But equally, you are likely to be enacting your own strategies of emotion regulation through digital means. It is part of an historic shift playing out in how people negotiate the demands of everyday life.
