Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.jpg

Parents will have received an email this week outlining that Anita Sgalippa will take over as the Principal of PBC from the commencement of next term whilst a process is run to find a longer term replacement whilst I work with the Comprehensive Review of School Resourcing team.  I would again like to thank the broader community for all their support over the past six years and leave PBC with many positive memories and achievements.

The school has been working on alternatives to school disciplinary absences (suspensions) this year for behaviours such as truancy and vaping.  After speaking with a range of students across the school and parents including the P&C there is alignment in thinking that suspensions do not alter or deter behavioural choices for certain situations.  Commencing next term, the school is going trial Saturday detentions as a negotiated (with parents) alternative to a suspension for behaviours including truanting and vaping.  More information will be available on the school website at the commencement of next term.

A reminder that the Year 10 students (all week) and the Year 12 students (Wednesday to Friday) are on exam blocks.  Students are required to be in full school uniform as normal.

Congratulations to the Murri Jarjums and Clontarf staff and students who won a number of awards at the South East Regional Indigenous Education Awards last week.

Chris Capra,
Executive Principal

Semester 1 Reports

Academic Semester 1 reports for Years 7-9 will be emailed home on Friday, 23 June 2023. Should you need to change your current email address please email ParentSupport@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au.  An N rating may be applied to any student or individual subject where there is insufficient summative assessment to assign a level of achievement. This can occur due to extended absence or failure to submit assessment. Parents are encouraged to connect with individual teachers if you have any concerns based on the reported student progress.

Optima Code - Be a Learner

Every day counts... a day here or there doesn’t seem like much, but did you know that if you miss just one day each fortnight it is equal to 20 days per year, which is 4 weeks per year, and therefore, from Prep to Year 12 that is nearly 1 ½ years of school that is missed. This means that the best your child can achieve is equal to finishing Year 11.

Being at school and being ready to learn is vital in student academic achievement, effort and behaviour. When we speak about being ‘Ready to Learn’ we are talking about having the right equipment, such as, textbook, pencil case, calculator and a charged laptop, so that we can be fully engaged with classroom activities and tasks. Being ‘Ready to Learn’ is also about our mental health, ensuring that we are eating healthy, exercising, limiting our technology and getting enough sleep at night.

By ‘Being a Learner’ and following the Optima Code, students can receive Optima slips and Optima postcards, which can earn Optima credits, and then exchange these credits for rewards. Please refer to the Optima Credit Menu for prizes.

Student Tutoring

To support our Junior Secondary students there is student tutoring available every Monday Period 4 1.45-3 pm on the top floor of the Library and Thursday 3.25pm – 4pm in IDT rooms.

Staff email addresses are available on the PBC website and we encourage parent/carers to email your child’s academic teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Elective Changeovers and Subject Selection for 2024

Year 7 and Year 8 will change over to two other electives in Semester 2 so that they have sampled The Arts, Spanish, HPE and Technology. Some exceptions exist for Excellence Programs. Year 9's will change 2 electives also so that in total they will have trialed four subjects this year. This sampling is all to enable students to make better choices for senior school in the subjects that they choose.

Year 8 students next term wil get to select 4 subjects they will study for one semester each beyond English, Maths, Humanities/HPE and Science for Year 9 2024 and Year 9's will get to choose three subjects that they will study for the whole year plus English, Maths and Science.

Work Experience Forms Year 9

The completed forms are to be returned to A Block Junior Secondary Student Services office by the end of Week 5 Term 3 (11 August 2023).

Junior Secondary Timetables

Term 3 Timetables will be emailed to all students during the School Holidays.

Study Skills

Week 8 and 9 study skills sessions for year 10-12 students covered interleaved practice and SWOT for exams.

Interleaved practice:

This is a process where students mix, or interleave, multiple subjects or topics while they study in order to improve their learning. While this practice is not terribly difficult, it does call for a bit of planning and students sometimes feel they're learning less, as it is tougher when problems are interleaved. However, with increased struggle to develop the answer the greater the learning and the more likely the information is transferred into long-term memory.

SS_update.png

Figure 1: demonstrates how study can be distributed to incorporate interleaved practice (exam study expert, 2021)

 SWOT analysis:

A SWOT analysis is a technique used widely by companies and organisations to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the business but can also be used personally as a study analysis to support exam preparation. Students identify their strengths and weaknesses (being aspects they have control over) and determine opportunities and threats that may impact their success. The greatest impact however will be when the students are able to identify how:

  • their strengths can make the most of the opportunities;
  • they can use their strengths to minimise weakness;
  • They can use opportunities to improve weakness;
  • to manage weakness to avoid threats

Connect Education Exam Preparation Sessions

In term 3 PBC is partnered with connect education to provide exam preparation sessions to Year 12 students studying Biology, Legal Studies and English on selected afternoons. These sessions will support students in their study practices for these subjects for the upcoming mock and external exams.

Permission forms and further information was emailed on 14th June and provided at assembly in week 9 for students.

Year 10 students have shutdown exams for the whole of week 10, Monday June 19 to Friday June 23. The timetable for these exams are published on the school website: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment).

Year 11 students have normal classes every day for the rest of the term. They will have assessment in week 2 of term 3. Due to the compressed nature of the year 11 curriculum, all year 11 students will have assignment tasks and exams to study for over the holidays.

Year 12 students will have normal classes for the Monday and Tuesday of week 10 and then have an exam shutdown commencing on Wednesday June 21 up to and including Friday June 23. Many subjects will have assignment tasks due in weeks 2 to 3 of next term.

Year 12 students and the parents of students behind in their VET subjects have been notified advising them that they need to attend school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of week 10 until they are up to date in their VET certificate courses.

The timetable for Year 12 exams and VET catch up is published on the school website: ( https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment).

The school’s assessment policy is published on the school website. Note that students need to complete all assessment in a subject to be given a result. If students do not submit an assessment task by 9:00am on the due date then the teacher must use the evidence collected before that date to make a judgement. If the student did not submit a draft this means that the student will not get a result for the subject. This will affect their progress towards the QCE and also their enrolment in post compulsory education.

Useful Study Techniques

The link below is an academic paper on improving study techniques amongst students, which may be useful when parents are discussing the best way to prepare for external exams. Note late night cramming whilst listening to music has been proven not to be effective:

 Other Senior Schooling Reminders

  • Students in Year 10 are reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.
  • Year 12 students and parents have recently been sent an email regarding the opportunity to complete a First Aid and Safety course for next term. This course attains 2 QCE points and is very well regarded in the community. Please refer to the email for more information.

Year 12 Trivia Night

Wednesday the 17th of May saw the Year 12's take on Trivia Night! The night was hosted by Mr Johnstone and Mr Patison, who had the crowd on the edge of their seats with their commentary of the pin the nose on Johno comp, the cup stacking comp, the doughnut eating comp and most importantly Trivia, which was run the old-fashioned way this year, on paper!

The Year 12's let their competitive sides loose with extra points from the physical challenges only just separating first and second place. From Superheros, to Fruit and Veg, to the entire cast of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Year 12's went full out with their team costumes.

A big thank you to Sticky Rice Tugun, Crystal Expo Coolangatta, Earth and Sea Coolangatta, Studio Pilates Coolangatta, Grill'd Healthy Burgers Coolangatta, Ottimo Coolangatta, Zambrero Coolangatta, Grip Star Socks and Cheap as Chips Framing who all donated prizes for our raffle to support our school's charity, Albatross Nippers.

Overall, a great night! Thanks for a great turnout Year 12's!

Link and Launch

Introducing Grace, our Link and Launch Coordinator! Leaving school after graduating from Year 12 can be both exciting and scary for our students. There are a lot of opportunities for study, work and training, and it can sometimes be confusing for our students to navigate what is best for their future.

We have a designated Link and Launch Coordinator who will see to it that Grade 12 leavers receive individualised advice and support to ‘open the door to their future success’. Talking it through might just make the difference for our students...

Know someone suitable who will be graduating or has graduated in the last two years? Text or call 0467 951 239 or email gmack73@eq.edu.au. #linkandlaunch

This semester, Year 10 and 11 Certificate 2 Engineering pathway students have been working hard to complete online theory and robotics construction throughout their classes. Last week, they participated in a full day of practical intensive experience. The day was run in partnership with an external RTO Skills Generation who helped facilitate students to gain hands on experience in the field of engineering. Students were provided with the opportunity to operate multiple engineering workshop machines such as a Mig welding machine and other hand tools.  They learnt many new skills and were able to complete an independent project of welding together a steel dice from flat steel.

By the end of the term, students are leading towards completing the Certificate 2 Engineering Pathways and will move onto either a Certificate 3 in Aviation or Certificate 3 in IT.

Boss Entrepreneur Program

100 students had the opportunity to take part in the $30 Boss Entrepreneur Program, which is recognized as a nationwide, in-school entrepreneurship program focused on the development of enterprise skills such as financial capability and problem-solving in young people. The Boss Program is developed by the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) in consultation with students and educators.

The program design allocates students $30 in start-up capital to create, launch, and operate a business venture over the course of one school term and is about putting enterprise skills at the forefront of learning. This opportunity would not have been possible without the incredible financial support from the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce, which generously donated $2000 towards this worthwhile venture! We deeply appreciate their dedication to encouraging innovative and enterprise-enriched learning experiences for Gold Coast students.

During the term, students were tasked with creating businesses that were environmentally sustainable, which also linked to their own carefully selected social enterprises. The groups embraced the opportunity to show that businesses are able to do more than simply make a profit, by incorporating the benefits of supporting a wide range of community-based charities and initiatives such as Livin, The Animal Welfare League, and Rosie's, to name a few.

This year there were 32 amazing and well-presented stalls offering a wide range of items from trendy jewellery, scrumptious wintry pastries, ethically-sourced hair accessories, succulent plants in upcycled jars, fluffy fairy floss, delicious homemade shortbreads, caramel-infused brownies, mouth-watering pancakes, and funky homemade gifts. It was wonderful to see the student teams so immersed in the event and excited by the items and services they had produced. The event was bigger and better than previous years, student engagement was high, and we achieved a very healthy profit of $2342. Once again, this would not have been possible without the financial support of the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce.

Week 6 Alliance breakfast

The hospitality certificate students prepared and provided the PBC Alliance breakfast in a buffet style on Friday of Week 6. This event is run once a term – since covid the event has transitioned to a plated meal, with students working from a set standard to produce and serve a plated full English breakfast. This term saw the students take on the challenges of a buffet style breakfast – which is heavy on preparation and requires a greater degree of control. Students are presented with the opportunity to further their knowledge of food preparation and service, providing an exceptional catered event for our PBC business partners in the greater community.

Week 7 Principal’s Breakfast

Michael Rambold’s Year 11 certificate II class were presented with another opportunity to showcase their newfound buffet knowledge to cater for the GCPSA Principal’s Breakfast on Thursday morning of week 7. This event saw the class finetune their presentation skills, setting the dining room to cater for 15 Gold Coast school Principals in an elegant buffet style. The menu featured a range of delicately prepared breakfast foods, ranging from ham and cheese croissants and danishes to eggs benedict and florentine – all hand prepared of course! Please see the beautiful dining room and main course below.

Week 8 Year 9 Indigenous Foods Unit Practical Test

Year 9 food tech covers Indigenous foods for unit 2. The students have covered a range of Indigenous herbs and spices in their cooking this term – from bush tomato braised sausages to wattleseed and chocolate self-saucing puddings. This unit’s practical assessment required the students to produce a pasta dish including lemon myrtle – a fragrant Indigenous lemon herb. This saw the students produce a wide range of dishes – from spaghetti bolognaise to spinach and cheese penne – a few from Michael Rambold’s 9C class have been featured below.

Week 9 Soup Kitchens

To welcome winter and close down the term the Year 11 certificate II students are running a soup kitchen – catering to PBC staff with a warming winter soup and cheesy garlic bread. The students lovingly prepared a French onion soup and a zucchini, leek and potato soup. This event allows the new class of certificate students to present their skills to the wider PBC community and encourages PBC staff to support the hospitality team.
