Feedback

I am really encouraged by the work that I am seeing occurring in classrooms and the level of specific feedback that students are receiving from their teachers to improve their work. This feedback and responding to it is a vital step in any individual task.

Please encourage your young person to read any feedback on drafts or to consider feedback from any pre-tests very carefully and ask them if they understand what the teacher is telling them about their attempts.

The other challenging step for junior secondary is being organised enough to meet those timelines. As a parent staying connected to your young person’s deadlines and coaching them to meet these is one way we can work together in their education. Please discuss with them when their deadlines are and work with them to achieve this around their other at home commitments. Assessment due dates are published in our assessment calendars on the school's website.

It was wonderful to see so many junior secondary parents meeting with teachers across out parent teacher interview evenings. These nights are a great way to connect with your child's class teacher about their progress. If you have missed this opportunity then please feel free to email teachers for further informal commentary about how your child is progressing.

If your child is at risk of failing the semester and there is a possibility of turning this around teachers are encouraged to reach out to the parents of these students to hopefully change their trajectory.

All these things will allow you to extend your support role in their learning which as a school we are grateful for and value the role you play in this as parents.

Flexible Learning Space

This term the school has been trialing a new space where students who are facing current challenges can access their learning in an alternate room given the environment they are needing to stay engaged with schooling. Whilst it's operation has been very bespoke and small scale so far, it is hoped that this may be extended for second semester and into 2024. We are seeing an increasing number of young people who have mental health concerns some of whom struggle to engage with mainstream schooling. It is my hope that we can create a model that will help us to cater for a continually evolving and diverse student body.

  • Please note there were no nominations for cultural or community service in this term.

We are looking forward to celebrating with all three year levels in July. Remember that Year 7 celebrate each term and Years 8 and 9 each semester.

Growing Good Humans

This week each Year 7 class participated in a Growing Good Human session facilitated by Paul Bullpitt, HOD of Positive Behaviour. The key outcomes from these sessions were body awareness, emotional awareness and self-awareness. Students participated in activities that helped them to identifying situations in which they experience anxious and anger emotions. Students were able to use body clues to identify these emotions and also develop skills to improve in their general self-management in regulating their emotions. It was great to witness courageous students making a stand to be kind and be a good human.

Year 7 CAMP

Please ensure that if your young person is wanting to attend camp from 9 to 11 October 2023 a $80 deposit is due 16 June to secure your spot. Payments can be made by direct deposit as outlined on the permission form and in person at Finance D block. Once a deposit has been made and invoice will be generated with balance owing. Please return permission forms to A block Student Services.

If your young person is not attending camp, school attendance is expected as normal classes will still be timetabled.

Fight for Youth

Fight 4 Youth is a local youth centre focused on making a big difference in our community.

Selected PBC Junior Secondary students began the inaugural Fight 4 Youth program in Term 4 2022. Due to the success of the program there have been students in Year 9 participate at Fight 4 Youth in Term 1 and a new group again in Term 2 2023.

One of the highlights of this program was feeding the homeless.

Our Term 2 group recently visited the homeless to serve their dinner meal which included pumpkin soup, lasagne, pizza, vegetables, apple pie and ice-cream. The experience was very positive and beneficial to each student as they got to connect with a wide range of age groups that were homeless and listening to their challenges was eye opening to all.

Work Experience

All Year 9 students will be participating in Work Experience during Term 3 – Week 10.  There will be no lessons for students during this time.

This experience may enable students to participate in Work Experience as an opportunity to trial for a school Based Certificate III Traineeship in Year 10 or 11.

Work Experience Placements for School Student forms requires a student and parent signature. When a willing employer is found they must complete and sign the Work Experience Placement for School Students form and the Risk Assessment form.

If any student has not received a Parent and Caregiver information form and a Work Experience information form, please see Ms Willmott in A Block.

The completed forms are to be returned to A Block Junior Secondary Student Services office by the end of Week 5 Term 3 (11 August 2023).

Study Skills Bite

Week 5 and 6 study skills sessions for Year 10-12 students covered The Spacing effect and chunking and chewing information. Week 8 will be interleaved practice and Week 9 is SWOT for exams. Encourage your student to attend on Monday afternoon 1:25pm- 1:40pm.

Spacing Effect

Information that is studied or repeated over time leads to long-term retention. When students are exposed to and engage with information numerous times, spaced across multiple intervals it solidifies long-term memory, which enhances their ability for retention and recall.

As shown in figure 1, by reviewing information at intervals, not just at the end of a study cycle, students can recall a greater percentage of the information with a higher level of accuracy. (QCAA Strategies for retaining and recalling information for assessment, 2020). Students need to be integrating spaced learning into their study schedules to allow for long-term retention. This also reduces their cognitive load particularly at times of greater stress.

SS_pic.jpg

Figure 1: The forgetting curve and review cycle (Ebbinghaus, 1885)

Chunking and Chewing

By breaking information into bite-sized ‘chunks’ and providing an opportunity to process (‘chew’) the learning helps to make meaning clear but also assists in moving it from working memory to long-term memory.

Assessment

Year 10 students will have shutdown for exams in Week 10. Exams will be scheduled from Monday 19 June up to and including Friday 23 June.

Year 11 students have normal classes everyday for the rest of the term. They will have assessment in Week 2 of Term 3. Due to the compressed nature of the year 11 curriculum all Year 11 students will have assignment tasks and exams to study for over the holidays.

Year 12 students will have normal classes for the Monday and Tuesday of Week 10 and then have an exam shutdown commencing on Wednesday 21 June up to and including Friday 23 June. Many subjects will have assignment tasks due in Weeks 2 to 3 of next term.

Shutdown calendars for Year 10 and 12 will be published on the school website in the coming week Students are expected to know the date, time and room of their assessments.

The school’s assessment policy is published on the school website. Note that students need to complete all assessment in a subject to be given a result. If students do not submit an assessment task by 9:00am on the due date then the teacher must use the evidence collected before that date to make a judgement. If the student did not submit a draft this means that the student will not get a result for the subject. This will affect their progress towards the QCE and also their enrolment in post compulsory education.

Year 11 End of Unit 1 subject reports will be emailed to parents this week. The Senior schooling team will begin monitoring the academic performance of students in this cohort to ensure that they are on track to attain the QCE.

Students are expected to pass at least 5 out of their 6 subjects to remain eligible for the QCE and to remain enrolled in post compulsory schooling.  If students have been disengaged and not working appropriately, they could find themselves in a position where they are ineligible for the QCE at the end of Unit 1. Please visit the following link for more information on the requirements for the QCE:

https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/your-qce-pathway/about-the-qce

Whilst Unit 2 has already commenced, Year 11 students can still change classes up to Friday 9 June, though there is limited timetable availability. Any Year 11 student that wishes to change classes should come to Y block as soon as possible.

Year 12 ATAR students had the opportunity to a mentoring session this week to discuss their progress in General subjects and their ATAR range. A range of study support sessions are available for Year 12 students to help them maximise their results. These are also published here (please add in Year 12 Study skills opportunities pdf).

The link below is an academic paper on improving study techniques amongst students, which may be useful when parents are discussing the best way to prepare for external exams.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/SupportAndResources/FormsAndDocuments/Documents/assessment-calendars-and-shutdown-timetables/improving_study_strategies_discussion_guide_and_article.pdf

Year 12 students are now completing Unit 4 work and will only have 2 assessments left in each of their subjects. At the end of Year 12 students’ results in Unit 3 and 4 are combined to award an exit grade and for General subjects a numerical value.

All year 12 students should by now have logged onto their QCAA learning account in the QCAA student portal. This is accessed via the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html. All students were sent emails regarding the details of logging into the account at the start of the year. Student results are published by the QCAA directly into their learning account.

Report Cards

Year 11 Reports will be emailed to parents early in the week of 5 June. Congratulations to all Year 11 students for their excellence efforts.

On Tuesday 16 May, PBC’s Growing Good Humans program held a Conversations that Count Event in conjunction with Miami SHS called the “The Changemakers".  The event was held in the theatre and 200 local community members, parents, students and staff were held captive by a fabulous panel.

Our speakers for the event were Em Carey, award nominated author and survivor of a sky diving accident who spoke of the way that you respond to circumstances; it can mean the difference between a positive and fulfilling life versus a negative outlook on life.  Em also spoke about how everyone has a choice in life and what they choose to do should have a positive impact on themselves and others.  Her mantra of ‘If you can you must’ was a positive way of looking at everyday opportunities.

Ellouise and Stuart Seaton, parents of the Palm Beach community who will soon foster their 100th child relayed the challenges that foster children face, the opportunities that their whole family give to the children and the impact that the children leave on their family, so many treasured memories and stories.  It was wonderful to hear that they just give back without expecting any accolades, you just do it! Life can be chaotic but chaos can mean memory making.  If someone wants to give their heart, be a carer, those children are put with a family for a reason or a season.

Nick Marshall (OAM) is a sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapist, and creator of Albatross Nippers run through Nobby’s Surf Club. Nick’s passion for ensuring those with special needs and disability are included in the community is contagious and inspiring.  It was wonderful to hear the impact that the program has on the mentors of the Nobby’s SLSC and how the notion of ‘it’s cool to care’ is touted within the club’s culture.

Final thoughts from the evening;

  • Be prepared to be corrected in life, it’s ok.
  • Your thinking matters in your happiness.
  • Draw a positive out of the negatives.
  • Everyone has their own unique story, it’s just great to hear it.

QSAC Excursion

The Track Sports Excellence group had an amazing day at the QSAC (QLD Sport & Athletics Centre) for the 3rd Cluster Day. This is the track that will most likely be used for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. They had the opportunity to be coached by an Australian National Team coach who gave feedback and helped with technique. Students watched several professional athletes train on the track (including Michelle Jenneke who has won many International medals in Sprint Hurdles). They also had an opportunity to race in their main event on the track. Finally, The Head of Physical Performance (in charge of 750 athletes and 20 coaches) gave them a tour of the gym used by professional athletes in the centre.

We are extremely grateful to have been given this opportunity.

PBC Alliance Business Breakfast

Slide1.jpg

On 26 May we held our Term 2 Business Networking Breakfast to a full house. Alliance Partner, Members, Friends, PBC Staff and Students Leaders enjoyed a delicious meal provided by our Senior Hospitality Students and Staff. The full buffet breakfast was a huge hit with guests raving about the quality of the food. Thank you to Bidfood for providing the produce for the breakfast.

Guests were able to listen to the inspirational story of Leisa Logan and her Fight 4 Youth project. Fight 4 Youth is an inclusive, multicultural youth centre, that supports a diverse range of youth and offers therapeutic-based programs through physical activities for people of all abilities. Fight 4 Youth aim to build confidence, self-awareness and acceptance through sport, mentoring and empowerment programs, as well as provide relief to young people in need and aim to promote the control and prevention of behaviour that is harmful to youth and communities, through programs, education and support.

After hearing from Leisa guests enjoyed an eco-documentary from Lin Sutherland, Producer Travel Wild TV. Lin was able to spend some time with our Senior Marine Biology students during their excursion to Heron Island earlier this year. The documentary can be seen on her YouTube chanel in a sneak peak, before it is released to a steaming service later in the year. To see the video click TravelWildTV@TravelWildTV .

Finally we heard from the OG PBC Alliance Partner/Founder, Ian Fraser from Fraser Financial Services about his connections to PBC and the importance of the Alliance for supporting our students.

Thank you to all who attended. Thank you to those businesses that supported our Lucky Door Prizes, Tugun Community Bank Bendigo Bank, Laura Gerber MP, VMA Promotional Products and Summerland Credit Union.

Shout out to our 2023 partners!

Spark their Future

Every young person is unique and success looks different for everyone. By looking at the way we think about school and success, we can help our teens find their own learning pathway through school and beyond. Did you know the human brain doesn’t fully mature until the third decade in life? Hear Dr Nagel explain how being at school helps develop the teenage brain. During these years it’s a critical time for young people to be around other young people. The Spark their Future website has tips and resources to help you support your teen during their learning pathway.

TEEProject Survey

One in every 10 young people who take the survey will be randomly chosen to win a $50 gift card. Parental consent is required for young people aged 12-15 years.
