Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Year 12 external exams commenced yesterday with the General English exam. Over the next three weeks our students will complete their exams which go towards their final ATAR score and their Qld Certificate of Education. This is the first time that Queensland students have sat external exams that have counted towards their final university entrance score (ATAR).
The air-conditioning project continues at a rapid pace with the school still expecting to have all general classrooms air-conditioned by the end of the school year. We are experiencing daily classroom changes to allow for installation team to complete their ongoing works, so it is essential that students listen to the daily notices and check their emails each day about possible room changes.

As Year 12 students enter the period of final external exams we would like to take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck. Students have worked incredibly hard to get to this point and the external exams should be taken as an opportunity to show off their knowledge and abilities.
Year 12 students are reminded that Griffith University has opened an early entry pathway for 2021, students who meet the criteria are strongly encouraged to apply https://www.griffith.edu.au/apply/guaranteed-admission-scheme. Students should also at this point have completed their 2021 QTAC application for university entry https://www.qtac.edu.au/applications/. If help is required for any of the above please contact our Senior Secondary Guidance Officer Mr Jones.
Our Year 11 students have recently commenced their Unit 3 studies with the first summative assessment in most cases to take place at the end of this term. Any student who wishes to change subjects should come to Y block immediately as subject changes have now largely closed.

An unacceptable attendance record may lead to disciplinary actions as per the Parent Compulsory Schooling Obligation – Failure to attend 178(2) of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.
Holidays
What should I do if our family is going on a holiday in school time?
Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day. You are encouraged not to schedule holidays during school time. If your family circumstances dictate that your student must attend a holiday is during school time, please let the Attendance Officer know the absence dates at least 2 weeks prior to the holiday. Email the details to absences@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au .
Social Media
Parents and caregivers play an important role in helping children to develop digital intelligence — the social, emotional and practical skills needed to successfully navigate the digital world.
Is your child spending too much time online? On average young people in Australia make use of 5 different social media services. That can add up to a lot of time spent online or checking their phone. Social media services also send notifications all the time, which are designed to bring your child back online and using the service.
E-safety Tips
- Turn off notifications for your social media apps
- Monitor or limit your phone use
- When you do check your child’s phone
- https://www.esafety.gov.au/report/cyberbullying
We thank parent/caregivers for your support in Year 7 and 8 students not using a mobile phone before school, in class or during lunch breaks.
Student tips for protecting your digital identity
Google yourself
Google yourself and see what comes up. Put your name in quotations and add the city you live. For example, ‘Tom Smith’ + Sydney. Check things out from the perspective of a potential employer and ask yourself, ‘do I want these things to remain public?’
Check your privacy settings
If you find a few random photos or posts that are publicly available and you didn’t think they were, it’s a good time to change your privacy settings. Check out the eSafety Guide to find out more about the privacy settings for particular social media platforms and how to change them.
Say no to posts or photos
You may have heard the saying ‘if it isn’t on social media it didn’t happen’ but we know that this is not true. Opt out of photos or ignore tag requests if you want to protect your digital reputation.
Get posts/photos/videos taken down
If the posts are from someone else and you’re tagged in them — try to un-tag yourself or ask the person who posted them to take them down.
Think before you post, like or follow something
Make sure that the pages, groups, photos, tweets or videos you like, follow subscribe to or comment on, are true reflections of you and actually things you want to be associated with. Remember, a potential employer may not know that you’ve liked a page or uploaded a photo as a joke or understand its wider context.
As the saying goes, if in doubt, don’t post it!

PBC Dance Excellence Showcase
On Tuesday 13 October, Dance Excellence students dazzled audiences at the Dance Excellence Showcase 2020. Due to COVID, students were unfortunately not able to perform at HOTA this year, however still managed to put on a spectacular and professional show in PBC’s very own Theatre. The evening ran over two shows, the first at 5:00pm and the second at 7:00pm where students were able to perform their class routines and chosen student work that reflect the highest-standard in the Dance curriculum. From Anna Tantari’s solo recount of John Lennon’s life, to the hard-hitting finale from the Moulin Rouge choreographed by the Year 12 graduating cohort, the night was a short but sweet success. Thank you to Ms Loren Skyring, Ms Madonna Hall and Miss Abby Swanborough for providing students with this opportunity despite the tough restrictions. PBC has been one of the only schools in Queensland to hold a Dance Night this year.
Visual Arts Excellence Exhibition
On Thursday 15 October the Visual Arts showcased their Excellence students. Parents and students were invited to attend an exhibition that presented the works of Years 8, 9 and 10 Visual Arts Excellence in the students’ classroom. This gave the parents not only chance to see the students work but to also to see the creative art spaces where many of these students feel at most home. The audience was wowed by the Year 8 Surrealism paintings, gob smacked by the Year 9 Pop Art oversized food and intrigued by the reflective works of Year 10.
Shock Therapy Productions – Year 11 and 12 Drama Excellence
Renowned Queensland Theatre Company, Shock Therapy Productions, has received funding from Arts Qld to create Arts online resources, filmed and made available to teachers via Vimeo. As part of this venture, Directors, Sam Foster and Hayden Jones, invited PBC Drama students to join them in creating some high quality, recorded Theatre workshops. Our students were thrilled to be working alongside these innovative, creative actors in a Characterisation Workshop.
Junior Music Excellence Concert
The Junior Music Excellence concert is a showcase of the musical talent at PBC. It gives students from Years 7, 8 and 9 the opportunity to present their work to a live audience of family, friends and the wider community. Throughout the year students have been developing their technical skills and personal expression to realise their potential as performers. With a focus on collaboration, this concert will feature an array of musical styles ranging from Chopin to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
National Anthem - Grand Final
Year 10 Music Excellence student , Ajna Vearing, was invited by Queensland Rugby League to perform the National Anthem at the Grand Final last weekend, we have recived wonderful feedback on her talent and professionalism.
Working Musicians Gig Night
Student’s involved in the Working Musicians Program have been busy planning and preparing for Gig Night 2020. This very special showcase evening will be held at the Soundlounge on 21 November. Sound lounge is a highly-esteemed professional music venue and the students have had the opportunity to collaborate with Mrs Davidson, as well as the venue coordinators to bring this unique performance to life. This is a very exciting opportunity for these young artists to gain valuable experience onstage, share their gifting, as well as gain fantastic exposure as performing artists. There are a handful of tickets left over the two showings, and we would love to see you there.
