Dear Parents and Caregivers,
At the time of writing, our Swimming Carnivals have been moved to this Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a lot to do for all the students including, swimming events, games and activities. We hope to see as many students there as possible as this is one of the few opportunities of the year for the students to just have fun with their peers.
As previously mentioned the school, in discussion with the P&C and School Council, has streamlined report cards in taking away the comments (which were taken from a generic comment bank) and adding the level of achievement distribution graph. Parents are encouraged to meet with the teachers to have a face to face discussion about a student’s progress. Attached is the Information Statement for Parents about communication with teachers regarding student academic progress.
School Council Elections
As an Independent Public School our School Council plays an integral role in the governance of our school. It is important that every parent understands the work the council will undertake in this year as it will have significant impact on the strategic direction of our school. The school council is responsible for providing strategic advice to the principal and overseeing the governance of the school. Training is provided to new members.
School council members serve a two year tenure and we would like to acknowledge the following members who have recently completed their time on the council:
- Sally Farrell – Teaching Representative
- Tom Pasley – Teaching Representative
- Tanya Forbes – Parent Representative
- Nicola Jones – Parent Representative
- Erin Woods – Student Representative
Accordingly, vacancies exist for:
- 2 x Parent Representatives
- 2 x Teaching Representatives
- 1 - 2 Student Representatives
This year the school council will be responsible for providing advice about the implementation of PBC's 2018-2021 Strategic Plan. Members of the council will play an essential role not only in shaping this plan but keeping key members of the school's leadership to account on the key agendas and strategies.
If you are interested in being involved in this work, I encourage you to nominate for the school council. I also encourage those staff members who are not interested in joining the council to have their say in who represents them by voting in the school council elections.
Details of the nomination and election process are as follows:
- All self-nominations close on 3 March 2020
- School Council election day for Staff and Student representatives will be 18 March 2020 - 7:30am – 9:00am in TTC Bar / Dining

Year 7s Welcome
Our new Year 7 cohort have settled really well into high school life at PBC. It was disappointing to cancel our Year 7 night due to the crazy weather that we had and the impact that had on moving around the school. Unfortunately what we had planned would not have been possible. The content that we planned to cover in the Hall can be found here on our website. Some of my key messages were around how to set up healthy routines with laptops at home. I encourage families to support an hour of screen free time before bed as well as setting up a family charging station in a common area so that devices and laptops are out of bedrooms during the night. An hour a night on the laptop for homework will be enough time. Games cannot be downloaded on devices however an educational version of Minecraft is on there. Please encourage your child to take care of their device as essentially it is their property. If you have any questions about the laptops please contact us on the parent support email and we will direct your enquiry to the right person.
Mobile phones
Students should leave these at home as they cannot be used in classrooms. We are also encouraging the development of personal social skills and active play by asking students in Year 7 and 8 to not use mobile phones or laptops in the playground. Quiet individual activities on devices can be done in the library at breaks. Thank you to those parents who have been in contact about how supportive they are of this.
Character Strengths
Over the last few weeks we have been re-introducing character strengths. As part of the CARE curriculum students have again completed a short online survey answering 120 questions about themselves to identify a personalised ranking of the 24 character strengths.
These 24 character strengths are displayed in the image below.
We are encouraging students to know, share and build on their top five strengths and these may change with growth and development. The term weakness isn’t used but more likely we would describe these as strengths that are less prominent in our character or which could be further developed in an active way to be the best version of ourselves we can be.
I would encourage you to complete the online survey yourself at www.viacharacter.org and to discuss your own character strengths with your child. Lessons and personal experiences shared about how these character strengths have supported you over your life will be valuable and relevant at this time.
We will continue to build on these concepts of self in our weekly CARE curriculum lesson and transferring this knowledge to other learning areas.
Uniform
PBC SH is a uniform school and all students enrolling here are expected to accept and support these standards of dress as determined by the Executive Principal and supported by the PBC P&C. This policy is an integral part of our school security program and support the Department of Education, Training and Education Workplace Health and Safety policy. The full uniform code is available from the school website (www.pbc-shs.eq.edu.au.
In Junior Secondary our focus is on
- correct polishable black shoes
- compulsory PBC red socks
- jewellery compliance - 1 small discreet earring in each ear, a wrist watch is optional and no visible facial piercings
Non-compliance of our uniform code will result in disciplinary action.
The start of a new school year always provides us with the opportunity to revisit the key policy documents that allow our school to function efficiently. Can I encourage everyone to spend some time reading through the front section of the Student Planner. Here you will find the information that will ensure your student complies with PBC’s operational standards, such as our Optima code, uniform code, general procedures, and policy documents.
There are several responsibilities and behaviour expectations that we will be reinforcing throughout the year to ensure your student has the best chance of success. Some of these include:
- Attend school on every school day, being on time and ready to learn
- Act at all times with respect and show tolerance towards other students and staff
- Work hard and comply with requests or directions from all school staff
- Abide by school rules as outlined in the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students
- Meet homework and assessment requirements
- Wear the correct school uniform every day
- Respect school property and property of your peers
- Act responsibly when traveling to and from school, as you represent the PBC community.
With Term 1 well underway I would encourage all parents to regularly engage in conversations with their student about ‘How are they travelling at school?’ This discussion may take lots of different twists from academic concerns and homework due, through to friendship issues and what events are coming up. All of the resulting conversations are positive in that it builds relationships with the student, parent and school community. If we can support you and your student in making school a positive experience and assist them in achieving their goals, then please contact PBC to engage the relevant support.
Education Queensland developed the ‘Everyday Counts’ initiative to highlight the importance of attending school every day. PBC recognises this, and will actively monitor the attendance of every student. You can assist by encouraging your student to attend school every day and be vigilant in contacting school when absences occur so our record keeping is up to date.
Looking forward to a happy, safe and successful 2020
PBC and Stymie - helping support our students
In 2020, we are proud to be continuing our relationship with Stymie, an anonymous website dedicated to supporting our students and helping tackle issues such as bullying in our school community. Stymie has been a part of our school since 2017 and is an organisation run by current Queenslander of The Year, Rachel Downie. In the past 3 years, students have anonymously used Stymie to alert our wellbeing team regarding concerns they have for friends in relation to bullying, online conduct and individual wellbeing. Stymie has given bystanding students a voice through its anonymity, and will continue to do so.
If you are interested in learning more about Stymie, more information is detailed in the Student Planner, or through www.stymie.com.au

Sonia Shreeve - Industry Liaison Officer
Welcome to another year of study with the Health and Physical Education department. Please be advised of the following points regarding participation in physical activity within HPE.
-
7 – 10 HPE, Physical Education, Sport and Recreation, and Fitness all involve physical activity as a component of the curriculum.
-
A red sport uniform is a required uniform for physical activity. If a student does not bring the required uniform, teachers will issue a consequence.
-
Local venues in close proximity to the school are often used for delivery of physical activity. These venues include the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre, boardwalk along Currumbin Creek, Currumbin Creek, Lacey’s beach (Palm Beach) and Salk Oval.
It is understandable that at times a student has an injury or illness that will impact their participation. In these cases please make the teacher aware so that they can adapt the curriculum to support the continued learning of your child. If removal from curriculum is recommended by a medical professional and supported with a medical certificate or directive, please contact the Head of Department directly regarding this. Please note we will not remove students from curriculum on parental advice alone.
I look forward to working with parents to enable the wholistic education of their children.
Shane Roberts
HPD HPE
To rise every day mentally stronger takes a similar focus to improving physical strength. We all need hints and tips to use, and to apply effort to become stronger. Building strength results in increased capability to be resilient and to recover from stressors in our lives. Across weeks 5 and 6 there will be a number of opportunities to learn from others who are on a journey of building mental strength. Included in these events are;
-
Advice from young people who are recovering from mental illness – Wednesday 4 March (week 6). Ashlee Thomas and Summer Edhouse are recent graduates from PBC. During their time at school they both experienced high levels of anxiety and stress, simultaneously battling an eating disorder. Their frank and honest tellings of their stories will provide young people with advice about managing the voices inside your head and building mental strength. This is a free event for students to attend.
-
Advice from parents to parents about supporting children to build mental strength – Wednesday 4 March 6:00pm. All children and adolescents experience anxiety and stress in their lives. For some, these experiences can result in barriers to achievement, accomplishment and emotional positivity. This session will provide parents with advice that will enable them to support the building of mental strength in their children’s lives. The advice is from parents who have supported children through a mental illness recovery journey and the student welfare team from PBC. This is a free event, please watch the PBC Facebook page for information closer to the date.
Any questions regarding this 2 week event can be directed to Shane Roberts (Head of Department HPE).
2020 PBC Musical - All Shook Up!
We have had a wonderful start to Term 1 with lots of buzz and hype around our Musical “All Shook Up” which will be presented at the Twin Towns Showroom, Friday 20 March and Saturday 21 March. We are offering the Southern Gold Coast and local community an exciting opportunity to come and shake rattle and roll to the Juke Box Musical Comedy “All Shook Up”. With over 130 students singing, dancing and acting to a live band, you will be immersed in the joy of Musical Theatre and join us in celebrating the talented artists we foster here at Pam Beach Currumbin High.
“All Shook Up” is based around William Shakespeare’s 1602 Twelfth Night and built around a number of songs made famous by Elvis Presley. The PBC 2018 Musical “Grease” was a sell out with some disappointed people missing out on tickets, so be sure not to miss this fantastic showcase of PBC talent and book your tickets on line now! Only three shows available.
We will be starting the season off with a special primary matinee performance for Year 5 and 6 students from Currumbin State School, Palm Beach State School, Tweed Heads Public School and Elanora State School on Friday 20 March at 10:30am.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Luka Duffy who has been accepted into the Young Conservatorium of Music for Baritone Saxaphone and Claire Seaton who also gained entry on the Bassoon. We are very proud of these humble and talented students whom through hard work and dedication gained entry into a highly sought after program.
Congratulations to past student Regan Hickey who has gained entry into the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Southbank for Jazz Bass and also Charlie Priest who has also gained entry for classical flute. Past student Callum Watson has also accepted a position at the Jazz Music institute to study Drums. We wish them all the best for their bright future as musicians.
PBC Alumni
The Dance Excellence students have engaged in many technique and choreography workshops the last few weeks learning performance repertoire for 2020. Mackenzie Lintmeijer, Kira Stray and Rochelle DeSnoo are just a few of the Alumni Dance Excellence students whom have all returned to the southern Gold Coast to choreograph eisteddfod routines for our students. These women are all highly sought after professional industry artists who love giving back to the PBC community and mentoring our young dancers. Thank you ladies for your continued support and dedication to the Dance Excellence program, we are blessed beyond measure to have such wonderful Alumni who always return to show their PBC Reds pride.
Drama
Drama excellence students have hit the ground running and are in the early stages of preparing themselves for the 2020 Drama Festival. Directors Dani McGlynn and Cameron Sarasola are leading their students through an arduous creative process.
ACD CDI
Early January 2020, Year 11 student, Mia Beame was involved in Australian Dance Collective’s Contemporary Dance Intensive (ADC CDI) at the QUT Creative Industries, Brisbane. This program provided the opportunity for Mia to dance, work, create and connect with the Australian Dance Collective company artists – formerly known as Expressions Dance Company - as well as other well-known Australian guest artists in a collective environment. Artists such as Riannon McLean, Melanie Lane, Tyrel Dulvarie from Bangarra Dance Theatre, Fiona Jopp, Cass Eipper, Kate Harman from The Farm and Teri Crilly, former soloist with Queensland Ballet. This two-week summer intensive included class, repertoire, yoga, multiple tasking and phrase workshops and an industry discussion each day with Artistic Director of ADC, Amy Hollingsworth. The repertoire classes included works from ADC, Melanie Lane and Bangarra Dance Theatre shown in photographs below.
The ADC CDI is an incredible platform to create intimate and valuable connections with professional artists and friends, and to expose the dance industry to potential artists who aspire to work and achieve in a creative, intellectual and collective environment.
Vocal Ensemble
For 3 days at the beginning of Week 3, our Vocal Ensemble students headed up to Tamborine Mountain for our annual Vocal Group Workshop Camp. The students worked on repertoire for our performance season and workshopped with an industry professional Vita Adam. Vita is a singer and song writer who is a member of the Melbourne Gospel Choir. In our 8-hour workshop, students learned about performance presence, working as an ensemble and harnessing their sound. Students also participated in a team-building catapult activity and enjoyed the natural beauty of Tamborine with a swim in Cedar Creek.
Thank you to our Vocal Group Ensemble leaders for all their hard work during rehearsal sessions and our teachers for the wonderful experience.
Working Musicians Program
The Working Musicians Program is up and running again for 2020. Over the course of the year, students will be learning how to make their start in the music industry, focussing on four major areas; song writing, live performance, production and independent release. Students begin the year by honing their skills as song writers and participating in writing workshops with various industry professionals. Their original songs will be showcased at the end of the semester in a live, local music venue. We look forward to sharing more of this artistic work with you soon!

PBC has embraced the Container Deposit Scheme since its introduction in Queensland on 1 November 2018. Since then, PBC has raised over $9,500 simply by collecting empty beverage containers. This money will be spent on sustainability initiatives around the school.
Students can continue to support this program while at school by placing their empty beverage containers in one of the many blue bins around the school before school or during lunch breaks. If you can encourage your child to do this, making sure the container is empty and the lid is off, it would really help us to increase the amount of money we raise each week.
For parents and the wider community, you can help us continue to raise money by bringing your empty beverage containers to our weekly Wednesday morning drop-off at the Reds Gate on the oval. Orange bags can be collected from school (Mr Pasley – D block staffroom or Miss Benigno – G block staffroom) or containers can be in plastic bags or cardboard boxes. Orange bags are available from the drop-off point on Wednesday mornings. The drop-off is open from 7:00-8:45am every Wednesday.
Eligible containers are shown in the image below.
Generally speaking, these items are eligible:
- water bottle
- soft drink bottles/can
- juice bottles/cartons/poppers
- flavoured milk bottles/cartons
- beer bottles/cans
- mixed alcoholic drink cans/bottles (not pure spirits)
The containers excluded from the scheme are:
- plain milk containers (including plant-based milks)
- containers smaller than 150mL or larger than 3L
- wine bottles
- pure spirits bottles
- pure juice bottles 1L or larger (fruit drinks are accepted but only pure juice under 1L is included)
If every student at PBC brought in one orange bag full of containers (approximately 50 containers), this would generate $12,500 per fortnight. Over the course of the school year, this would equate to $250,000. This money would go a long way to making PBC a much more sustainable place, funding a range of initiatives that could include things like solar power.
Thank you for supporting sustainability at PBC. We are working hard to reduce waste and improve the amount we recycle. Please feel free to contact Mr Pasley (tpasl1@eq.edu.au) if you would like more information about the Container Deposit Scheme or sustainability more generally at PBC.#redsgogreen
The Hon Karen Andrews MP
MP Karen Andrews visited Palm Beach Currumbin State High School last week to present a $20,000 cheque to the School as a part of the Communities Environment Program. The schools successful application for the esteemed grant will facilitate the purchase of a commercial capacity compost tumbler that will process large volumes of organic waste material from the school and partners within the wider community, into rich compost. Students Hannah Daley and Erin Woods had the opportunity to discuss the project with the MP and the future plans of the Sustainability Committee.
Global Wave Conference
Last Wednesday, 12 February, a small group of eager PBC students braved the wild weather to attend the 6th Biennal Global Wave Conference held at Southern Cross University. The conference brought together industry professionals and impassioned students to discuss some of the most challenging ocean issues the world is currently faced with. Year 9 student Hannah Daley represented PBC at the conference by participating in a panel comprised of student leaders in the field of sustainability from a variety of schools on the coast. Students were asked about their involvement in positive environmental and social change in their respective schools and communities.
Tom Pasley and Bianca Benigno
Sustainability Coordinators
PBC welcomed a new group of International study abroad students who will be here studying for the next 6 to 12 months. They are from Austria, Brazil, Chile, China. Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. The students are all keen to improve their English and to get to know more of the Australian culture. The majority of the students are staying with our homestay families and look forward to spending time on the Gold coast. In the coming weeks the students will spend time visiting Tangalooma, Cook Island, Byron Bay and Fraser Island.
We will once again be hosting the Lizen Taiwanese Study Tour from the 21 May till 7 June. This group has visited PBC for the past 15 years and we have a Friendship Agreement with the school in Taiwan. The students will be integrated into our classrooms during their time with us and will have themed lessons on climate change and Australian bushfires as well as Aussie culture and communication. They will have a very interactive and fun program. The students stay with local homestay families and we are seeking anyone who may be interested in hosting 1 or 2 students for this tour.
This is a great opportunity to open your home to an International student for a short period of time and experience a different culture. Families who are interested will be remunerated for hosting and will need to register with us. Please contact Corinne Van Put – International Student Coordinator on 5525 9394 or email cvanp1@eq.edu.au
We encourage parents/caregivers to email your student’s excellent recent achievements to us. These achievements can be in The Arts, sporting, academic or community service. We would love to hear from you! Please email us at news@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au with details of your student’s achievement and include at least one photo, and/or any links to media articles that we can share via our Parent Newsletter, internal communications and social media.

Our Student Council are to be congratulated for organising such a wonderful event.
Gold Coast Inter – Schools Tennis Challenge
PBC took a team of 32 students to compete in the annual Inter–School Challenge which was a doubles event held over 2 venues on Sunday 16 February and with the vast majority of private and state schools represented it was a highly competitive tournament. The quality of tennis on display was exceptionally high with all of the PBC students competing and performing well. The stand out performance was in the Middle School girls competition with Ebonie Russell and Karissa Muir (pictured) going all the way and winning the competition in a nail biting tiebreak in the final! PBC also had semi-final appearances in the junior secondary boys (Reave Gehling and Quincy Khan), senior secondary girls (Paula Merlin and Julia Edle Von Krempelhuber) and senior secondary boys (Jan Constantin Arntz and Julian Heubach) who all narrowly missed out on making the finals. Congratulations to all of the PBC students who competed and thank you to all of the parents for their continued support.

Study in the USA
The USA Pathways Program at The Southport School once again welcomes students from all neighbouring schools to take advantage of the College USA testing opportunities offered here and regularly has students from your school on our SAT roster, accordingly the following might be of special interest to your Year 10 and Year 11 students.
In addition to offering the SAT and ACT entrance tests for Year 12 students, our international accreditation also encompasses the PSAT which is a standardised test directed at both Year 10 and Year 11 students who have aspirations of completing Year 12 here in Australia before heading on to college in the USA via an academic pathway and/or athletic scholarship. It remains the single most beneficial means of preparing for the SAT.
Recommended timeline is as follows:
• YEAR 10: First PSAT
• YEAR 11: Second PSAT
• YEAR 12: SAT (usually taken twice in Year 12)
The PSAT (Pre-SAT) is literally as its name suggests – a preliminary version of the SAT. It is designed as a practical resource to assist students in preparing for the SAT proper, with most students taking the PSAT twice: once in Year 10 and then again in Year 11 in readiness for the SAT in Year 12. All students who complete the PSAT receive a results portfolio from College Board designed to give them an indication of potential college readiness by the end of Year 12; it also provides comprehensive feedback to highlight areas of study which could benefit from more concentrated focus as they head into SAT preparation. Test-takers can also rest assured that PSAT scores are not shared with any prospective US colleges, it is tightly held as a practice tool for the SAT.
The Southport School is an accredited testing centre for College Board USA and is offering the PSAT on Saturday 18 April, 2020. Test session will commence here at TSS at 8:30am and conclude at approximately 12 midday; test fee is AUD133.
*Note: there will be a second opportunity to take the PSAT in October 2020 (date yet to be confirmed).
We recommend that any of your Year 10/11 students considering USA as a real option for tertiary study invest some time in their SAT preparation by taking the PSAT.
In order to register for the April PSAT the following information will need to be provided via reply email, then payment process should be completed at: https://forms.tss.qld.edu.au/psat/

Students are advised to create an account with https://www.collegeboard.org/ as test scores are accessible through this portal.
There are some practice tests available on the College Board website which may also be helpful in preparation for the PSAT: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice
Online educational organization Khan Academy also works jointly with College Board to provide video tutorials and interactive exercises covering all facets of preparation for both the PSAT and SAT. This includes a free service to students to link their PSAT scores to their Khan Academy account which results in students receiving personalized practice based on areas of most difficulty identified in the PSAT – this can be a very valuable tool in preparing for the SAT. Information regarding the PSAT score report and linking scores to Khan Academy Account can be found in following tutorials: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/scores/student-score-reports
