Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Term 1 draws to a close on Friday with most school students undertaking exams and having assessment items due this week. Students in Years 10 and 12 have an exam block from Wednesday to Friday meaning that the students will be working up until the school holidays commence. School holidays commence this Friday at 3:00pm with school returning on Monday 17 April.
Capital Works Projects continue at a rapid pace with the Sports Hall Precinct due to be finished on time next term and the new C Block toilets to be handed over to the school late this week. Over the holidays some asbestos removal works will occur and therefore with the exception of the Saturday Markets, the school will be closed to the community over the holidays.
It was great to see Term 1 resembling school life pre-pandemic. The number of students who participated in extra-curricular activities was at a record high, whether it was camps, excursions or performances. Term 2 is looking just as exciting with competitive sports, arts and academic competitions all commencing.

Casual Dress - Friday 31 March
The JS council have organised a Casual Dress Day on Friday for year 7,8 and 9 students. It will be a gold coin donation to the schools charity, Albatross Nippers. There will also be a barbeque hosted by the tuckshop for students. So hopefully you can be here Week 10 to enjoy what we’ve organised. The theme is summertime/ Hawaiian.
Year 7-9 Report Cards
Our Junior Secondary students have been working hard over the last couple of weeks, completing assessments. It has been wonderful to see our students' commitment to applying their knowledge in classrooms. Thank you to our parents who have supported our students through the assessment period, by checking progress against the assessment calendars and encouraging students to put in the extra effort at home. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
The Term 1 Interim Report Card will be emailed home to parents on the last day of Term 1. This report summarises your child's academic progress and effort and behaviour for the first term of the year. At PBC a major focus is being a learner. Hence, we value effort and behaviour ratings on report cards. As a school, we are using the Effort and Behaviour Reporting Matrix to ensure consistency in these ratings across the school. You can find this Matrix on our school website at: Effort & Behaviour Reporting Matrix.
If you have any questions about the report card, please contact your student's class teacher. Please note that Parent Teacher Interviews will also be available in Term 2 – 9–11 May. Class teachers value partnerships with parents and are happy to work collaboratively to support each student.
NAPLAN
Done and dusted for another year. Last week NAPLAN testing was finished for Years 7 and 9. The students completed digital tests in reading, writing, numeracy, spelling and grammar and punctuation. Participation levels were very typical of a normal school day attendance and we look forward to results to see how students have progressed since two years ago. Staff administering tests were very proud of how engaged students were with the questions. Well done also to Mrs Sharon Hillcoat who does an amazing job co-ordinating the testing for such a big school as ours.
OPTIMA Rewards
OPTIMA rewards are the foundation of our positive behaviour reinforcement process at PBC. Class teachers reinforce our expected behaviours with OPTIMA Slips. Students then take these slips to our wonderful Miss Tegan in Junior Secondary Services in A block. Miss Tegan keeps a tally for each child. When students have accrued a certain number of slips they can access rewards from ice blocks, $5 tuckshop vouchers or movie tickets and much more.
Our Junior Secondary Students have been displaying wonderful behaviour in Term 1. Around 90% of students are being respectful, responsible and working hard in class, resulting in well over 1000 OPTIMA slips being awarded. Congratulations to all students who have been rewarded with an OPTIMA slip in Term 1.
Year 7 Immunisations
Reminder Year 7 Immunisations are on Tuesday 28 March 2023.
Fight for Youth
Due to the success of the inaugural Fight for Youth - Inside Out program in Term 4 last year we were excited to continue the partnership with Fight 4 Youth (F4Y) again in 2023. In Term 1, several Year 9 students successfully engaged in the program based at Currumbin every Tuesday and Thursday for eight weeks.
We thank Leisa Logan for providing the weekly practical boxing program which our students participated in with vigour and learnt many skills whilst experiencing a variety of guest speakers as part of the mentor program. Some of the key topics discussed with our Junior Secondary students included life skills, self-regulation, understanding consequences and enhancing respect for self and others.
Our Fight for Youth students also successfully finished the ‘Raw Challenge’ in the picturesque Numinbah Valley, NSW. The obstacle course tested students over 9 kilometres with 70 challenging obstacles along the way.
Congratulations to our successful program graduates Phoebe, Harper, Georgie, Billy, Jayden, Bryson, Lachlan, Ziggy, Lucas and Darcy .
Headspace Webinars
Please see attached Webinars during the School Holidays from Headspace.
Attendance Focus
Text message is the easiest and preferred way to notify PBC of an absence. For a full day absence please send the text message to 0426 305 728. Your text should include your child’s name, year level, date and reason for absence. An example text message is “John Smith Y8 03/06/22 Sick”.
Please don’t text any attachments such as medical certificates/photos as our text system cannot accept photos or images and the text will fail.
If texting is not possible, you can email – absences@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au with the same message as above.
Holidays During School Time
What should I do if our family is going on a holiday in school time?
Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance of school success. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged not to schedule holidays during school time. If your family circumstances dictate that your child must attend a holiday during school time, please let the Attendance Officer know the absence dates at least 2 weeks prior to the holiday (when possible) using the contact details below.
When deciding on holidays, parent/caregivers should consider the PBC assessment policy and calendars, which are on the PBC website, to prevent potential impact on their child’s assessment. It is also important for parent/caregivers to be aware that teaching staff are not required to supply school work to students taking holidays during the school term.
How do I notify the school?
TEXT MESSAGE – 0426 305 728 or EMAIL – absences@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au
Please provide student name, year level, dates absent (first day to last day), reason (HOLIDAY).

- More emphasis on social support
Social and emotional connectivity between humans is likely one of the most potent weapons we have against significant stress and sadness. Studies have found strong links between a lack of parental and peer support and depression during adolescence. Support from friends can also help mitigate the link between extreme adolescent anxiety and suicidal thoughts. In one study of teens, social support was linked to greater resilience – such as being better able to withstand certain types of social cruelty like bullying.
- Supporting one another instead of competing
During the 1970s and 1980s, competition between women was seen as something that held women back. Unfortunately, this message seems to have been lost in the tsunami of media coverage about bodies, looks and social achievement. Research has found that social media encourages competition between girls, particularly around their physical appearance. Teaching girls at young ages to be cheerleaders for one another – and modelling that behaviour as grownups – can help ease the sense of competition that today’s teens are facing.
- Showcasing achievements
Thinking about your own appearance is natural and understandable. But an overemphasis on what you look like is clearly not healthy, and it is strongly associated with depression and anxiety, especially in women. Adults can play a key role in encouraging girls to value other qualities, such as their artistic abilities or intelligence. Childhood can be a canvas for children to discover where their talents lie, which can be a source of great satisfaction in life. One way that adults can help is simply by acknowledging and celebrating those qualities.
- Empowering women
Girls look to grown women for examples of how they can behave and what they can do. You may not be the chief executive officer of a huge corporation, but maybe you are a wonderful teacher, or maybe you run a small business that provides an important product or service. Modelling pro-women attitudes means valuing all of the roles that people play in a society. In addition, teaching the history behind women’s movements and other important steps toward equality, such as the women’s right to vote, is key to empowering girls to value themselves and their roles.
- An honest look at social media
Social media represents a unique form of human interaction that has taken on an outsize role in the lives of teens. This is magnified for teenage girls, for whom every social media interaction may feel consequential and potentially cataclysmic. Interacting in a fun and positive way with peers on social media platforms can be a positive and affirming experience. On the other hand, seeing the things that others post, and comparing it with your own stuff, can make people of any age feel anxious about how they’re appearing, and whether they’re being socially included or excluded. This anxiety applies to both boys and girls, but the potential for emotional distress seems to be higher for girls. Awareness of how social media has the capacity to influence your feelings and mental health seems to help people keep some distance from their interactions on social media. Adults can help girls by discussing with them how social media influences their feelings, their self-perception and even their body image.
- Teaching teens to recognise their feelings
Learning to recognise and label feelings doesn’t come automatically for many people. The good news, though, is that kids can learn ways to help themselves when they’re experiencing anxiety or depression. Kids can learn to appreciate how hugging their dog, playing a board game, or talking with their parent(s) can help reduce anxiety, once they understand the feelings.
We think it’s worth noting that everything discussed here can also be helpful for boys, who are by no means immune to mental health problems. Encouraging achievement recognition, understanding how moods can be influenced by social media, and increasing support for both boys and girls is a positive step.

Head of Year 10- Leave for Term 2
We congratulate Mr Jarrod Wells current Head of Year 10 on his temporary appointment to Keebra Park State High School as Deputy Principal for Term 2. Mr Adam Brown will be acting as the Head of Year 10 for this time. Mr Brown comes to us with a number of years experience as a Head of House and we look forward to working with him more closely as part of the Senior Secondary team.
Year 12- TrackEd Profiles
All Year 12 ATAR students and their parents should have last week received the first TrackEd Profiles. These profiles detail for students their progress including numerical grades across all ATAR subjects. Knowing numerical grades is an important component in being able to accurately predict final outcomes and therefore make informed decisions around necessary improvements or interventions. Students have been actively encouraged to look at their predicted scores and start to engaged with QTAC around potential entry requirements for further studies next year should they wish to undertake them.
Assistance in this process of working on growth and planning for the future has been offered to all of these students through the senior secondary office should they be seeking further support.
Wellbeing around Exam Time
Senior Secondary can be a busy, stressful and exciting time for students and parents. It’s important to help students look after their mental health and wellbeing during this time to help minimise stress and maximise achievements. With this in mind resources have been developed to support student wellbeing.

Earlier this term, Year 12 Marine Science students (along with a few lucky Biology and International students) were lucky enough to visit the Heron Island Research Station on the beautiful southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. Leaving late Thursday night, students and teachers arrived blurry eyed in Gladstone early Friday morning before making the boat trip to Heron Island for a three-night stay.
The purpose of the trip was to allow students the opportunity to investigate the coral reef to collect data for their student experiments. As part of these studies, students collected information in groups using biological field study techniques such as transects, quadrats, and of course, plenty of snorkelling.
As well as a diverse array of beautiful corals, students witnessed the vast biodiversity of marine organisms including reef sharks, eagle-rays, reef fish, sting rays, shovelnose rays, groupers, as well as numerous green and loggerhead turtles using the island to nest and lay their eggs.
Highlights included offshore boat trips to observe popular dive spots such as the ‘Blue Pools’, ‘Coral Canyons’ and the world famous ‘Heron Bommie’. The early 4.30 a.m. wakeup call was a hit with most students that managed to rise. They experienced ‘Sunrise with Stevo’, which involved tropical island sunsets, walking among nesting turtles and an early morning snorkel. Some were even lucky enough to catch some turtle hatching and escaping their nests!
Students were also fortunate enough to be involved in the filming of a home-grown nature documentary, with particular focus on the future of our marine habitats and the importance of education of the marine environment. Capturing plenty of awesome footage, Lin and Dave filmed students interacting with many of the interesting Heron Island residents. They may have even stumbled on the next David Attenborough (Oliver) and Steve Irwin (Alex)?
A big thank you to Mr Stephens, Ms Tatzenko and Ms Mockridge for all the assistance in coordinating the camp. Thanks to the Heron Island Research Station staff and caterers John and Claire for making our trip a beauty!
In particular, a massive thanks to all the students who made the trips to Heron Island this year another awesome experience!

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Class Clowns Gold Coast workshop and regional heat was an excellent afternoon and evening. 7 students took part and did themselves and the school proud. They were up against students from Faith Lutheran College, St Martha's and a student from Byron Bay. Amy Hyde, Education Producer at HOTA said, ‘Your students were so well rehearsed. They did incredibly well. In the end the top 5 were each 1 point apart.’
Phoenix Yr, 8 received a Wildcard place for the State Final in Brisbane at the Powerhouse. He got to participate in another workshop with a pro comic and the State final where he competed against kids from Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Byron for a place in the National Final. Phoenix went amazingly well and was invited to participate in another workshop at the Brunswick Picture House and perform in a show there. Unbeknownst to us, he was in the running for another state finals place - which he WON - and now will fly to Sydney to do ANOTHER workshop and show at the Sydney Comedy Store. Congratulations Phoenix!!

Science Club finished the term off with a special demonstration by Mr Louden, who is a competitive free diver and instructor. He showed how being in cold water can lower your heart rate, which is helpful when free diving. Mr Louden had a resting heart rate of 94 beats per minute, which went down to only 30 beats per minutes with his head submerged in the icy cold water. Much of his training focuses on trying to reduce his heart rate. Ms Crandall also demonstrated a ‘pluck’ – which shows the heart in relation to the lungs (which she also inflated), trachea and tongue, before finishing off with a party.

Learner Licence fees cut in half
The cost of a Queensland learner driver licence will reduce to $75 on 1 March 2023, less than half the previous fee.
The change will offer first time drivers a saving of more than $100.
Learner licences will continue to be valid for 3 years.
On average it takes Queenslanders almost two years to move to their provisional licence, and many even longer, which is why learner licences are provided for this amount of time.
In the last five years, the average age for a Queenslander to obtain a learner licence is 16 years and 3 months and to upgrade to a P1 is 17 years and 11 months.
