Science Club finished the term off with a special demonstration by Mr Louden, who is a competitive free diver and instructor. He showed how being in cold water can lower your heart rate, which is helpful when free diving. Mr Louden had a resting heart rate of 94 beats per minute, which went down to only 30 beats per minutes with his head submerged in the icy cold water. Much of his training focuses on trying to reduce his heart rate. Ms Crandall also demonstrated a ‘pluck’ – which shows the heart in relation to the lungs (which she also inflated), trachea and tongue, before finishing off with a party.
