Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Sgalippa_Anita.jpgLast week our Heads of Department and other school leaders had a professional development day with a focus on wellbeing, integrity and teaching and learning. The day culminated in all 26 members conducting learning walks across the school. Travelling in teams of three the leaders looked to see evidence of teaching and learning expectations at PBC. Following this was a discussion on what are our next steps as a team to develop the practises of teachers to better improve the learning experience for students.

Thank you to the 652 parents who responded to the survey I sent in regard to the Monday afternoon timetable change this year. Something I would like to clarify is that no scheduled learning time was lost in the early finish. The additional lesson was a rotational one occurring due to the cluster day sports model that we now participate in. Over the last two years we have had high number so students either not attending on the days this lesson occurred or they would sign out half way through the day. Tracking this year shows that Wednesday and Monday attendance have both improved and there is a significant reduction in early departures so actually less learning time is being lost with the new model. Many parents commented on the improved balance their children have as a result and it was interesting to see how families are using the time. 10% indicated that they didn’t feel their student was using the time well on Monday afternoons and a similar number of students reported this also. I would encourage you to have your child access the many options that are available on Mondays including free access to paid tutors as well as literacy and numeracy intervention. We will explore some additional options for 2023 including some physical activity/sport as this was a popular suggestion for another alternative. Teachers indicated they were grateful for the time to plan and analyse data with their peers to improve the learning experience for students.

Our International Student program is back and running as our borders are open. We are potentially short 10 homestay positions for 2023. If you have a room to spare in your home and would like to receive $320 a week to board a senior school age international student for a longer term placement of 6 – 12 months please visit our International page on the PBC website. What a great cultural opportunity for both the students and your family so please consider seriously.

You may have noticed works have begun on a $10.6 million sports hall that will be near our tennis courts. The design meeting occurred last week and it will certainly change the look of our oval.

Please note this Friday, 2 September, is a student free day.

A huge congratulations to our Junior Secondary students who have represented our proud school both on the stage and on the field in recent weeks, as our creative artists and athletes experience a very busy time! We have had several wonderful performances in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod across our instrumental programs this year – detailed with much greater accuracy in the Arts section below. These results continue our rich history of success in instrumental music and are a credit to our teachers and mentors, Mr Justin Hart, Ms Kayla Latter, Mr Ruben McLean and Ms Nicky Cooper. Many of our wonderful Arts students will be lending their talents again as we celebrate 50 years of success in our upcoming ‘Reminiscing’ celebration of The Arts at PBC. It has been a joy to watch rehearsals of this event and encourage all who are able to grab a ticket and enjoy the show!

Similarly, congratulations to a host of Junior Secondary students involved in regional finals and meets over the past month in what has been a jam-packed sporting calendar as well. We are so very proud of our PBC Reds and the manner in which you represent our school both on and off the field.

Subject Selections

Both our Year 8 students and our Year 9 students are currently selecting their elective subjects for 2023, with these choices forming an important part of your schooling journey and preparation for the wealth of pathways available in the senior years. We thank you for your diligence in this process and a reminder that should you have any concerns/questions to contact the Junior Secondary Office as directed on your selection form. Subject Guides and information regarding all the choices available to your student can be found on the PBC Website. Year 9 2023 Year 10 2023

OPTIMA CODE – Be Respectful

One example of following the OPTIMA code of ‘Being Respectful’ refers to how we behave within our local community, including travelling on the bus. Student behaviour is a reflection on PBCs reputation within the community.

It is an expectation for PBC students within the school and community to:

  • Speak politely and use appropriate language towards school staff and community members
  • Respect the school and community by keeping the environment, vandalism and graffiti free (including placing rubbish in bins)
  • Using safe and responsible behaviours

It is an expectation for PBC students for bus travel behaviour to:

  • Line up at the front entrance of the school when they see their bus approaching
  • Wait for the teacher on duty to direct them to get on the bus
  • Communicate respectfully to the bus driver and other passengers
  • Act safely and responsibly when travelling on the bus

It is an expectation for PBC students when travelling to and from school to:

  • Follow all road safety rules including stopping at red lights and crossing at designated pedestrian crossings on green signal
  • If riding a bike, wear a helmet, stay in bike lanes (where appropriate) and walk bike across roads. Park and lock bike in designated bike area near N block (this area is monitored by CCTV footage)

This week from 29 August until the 2 September we celebrate Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week. This is a perfect time to celebrate the wonderful work teacher aides do in schools. Whether it is a thank-you note or showing your gratitude in another way, we have a week-long celebration to acknowledge, appreciate and recognise the positive impact teacher aides have on the lives of students, teachers and families. This year PBC held a ‘Teacher Aide Appreciation Breakfast’ Monday morning to say thank-you to all our teacher aides in making a difference in our school everyday!

Celebrating National Science Week

During Week 6 we celebrated National Science Week during first lunch each day, with this year’s national theme being Glass. It was a week full of fun activities, with student participation from all year levels. The week started with a University Showcase where Science Pathways Teams from the universities discussed with students the science pathways they offer. Tuesday and Thursday, students conducted various activities which included students observing properties of glass in one lab, and students making a kaleidoscope in another lab. Students observed natural glass under a stereomicroscope, glass optical illusions, simulation of total internal reflection light in an optical fibre, resonance of glass, and properties of the glass screen on a phone. Why not have ago at the phone activity at home (refer to the instructions)!  Wednesday, students attended a free science show by Big Bang Education, where students observed explosions, and properties of fire and liquid nitrogen. On Friday, science club students demonstrated how ‘prop glass’ is used in movies – prop glass is really just a solidified sugar solution that is used in movies to appear like glass – a much safer material to smash that real glass!

Any student who attended any of the sessions over the week entered a raffle, with the lucky winner of the draw being Eva Leworthy. She won $30 in tuckshop vouchers, along with a bucket full of lollies and other prizes. The major winner of the week was Marley Kinman for her Instagram entry “Using my kinetic energy to overcome gravitational force”, where students submitted photos demonstrating ‘Science in your everyday life’. Marley also won a bucket of prizes, along with $60 in tuckshop vouchers. Runner up entry, who also received prizes, was by Summer Morris - “I am keeping Costa (the horse) moving forward by squeezing him with my legs”.

A huge thank-you to those who assisted during the week – our science technicians, science teachers who helped with the activities, and science club members who assisted students with the activities.

Students v Teachers

Touch

The annual teacher v student competition started in 2022 with touch football. It was an extremely competitive game with teachers from an array of sporting backgrounds showing off their skills. Mr Darnett demonstrated his AFL ball skills with four tries, no behinds. Mr Patison sold a very impressive dummy and there were a lot of buyers as he ran the length and Mr Johnstone shook off his disappointing performance in the 100m at the sports carnival to dominate with ball in hand. The Senior Sport Ex Touch Girls also played well with Sienna Laing flying down the sideline and Sierrah Dawson scoring on a couple of quickees on unsuspecting teachers. In the end, however, the teachers came out of top with a very close, 8 to 6 scoreline.

Netball

On paper, the 2022 teacher’s netball team looked good! New inclusions included ex Silver Fern Captain - Temepara Clark, coaching marvel - Linda Peterson and ex NRL aerial genius Anthony Don. Despite outstanding recruitment by the teachers, it was always going to be a huge challenge when they were outnumbered 9 players to 7.

Off the back of some classy passing combinations through the centre court by Ocean and Dakota, the students jumped to an early lead in the first quarter. Although some of the teachers have had over 10 years experience in this competition (it took them a while to remember the rules, see the court lines and breathe efficiently).

The momentum changed in the second and third quarter when the teachers defence improved, forcing some turnovers, which was capitalised on by some fluent attacking sequences and accurate finishing by Adam Brown and Sarah Glazebrook. There were some protests that Mr Ashenden was a little ‘button happy’ on the digital scoreboard in the teacher’s favour, however, they were rejected on the basis of nerves and fear of the frazzled student team.

With hope and ambition the teachers tried their best to lift or even maintain their intensity in the fourth and final quarter, however, age (and the referees) got the better of them. Both Abby and Tahli, scored multiple goals, blowing away any hope left in the teacher’s team.

A huge congratulations to the winning senior girl’s netball team on their best performance for the year. Sadly, both student referees and in particular Brielle, are under review for unethical behaviour including match fixing.

Basketball

The teacher vs student Basketball game is always eventful. Coming off a buzzer-beating win last year, the teachers had a high spirits coming into this game. The students started out on fire, hardly missing. The teachers…hardly scoring. It didn’t take long though and the teachers were back in the game. Some new blood in the form of Jake Cosson, Joel Tippett and Ms (hardly miss) Sarah Glazebrook kept the students on their toes and scrabbling to keep the lead. After some tough shots and great refereeing, the teachers were in the lead (up by 4) and with the game coming to an end Wiremu who didn’t miss a shot, nailed a 3-pointer to ensure the students only lost by 1.

Soccer

The anticipation amongst teachers was at an all-time high with the news that Chris Capra wouldn’t be refereeing this year due to his absence. The teachers were a chance of winning!

The opening 10mins was akin to game 3 State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium. After some quality play from both teams the students struck first through a goal the Jed Thelwall (replacement for his older brother – injured.) After dominating field position the students scored again through a crafty set piece. Andy Burovski on the end of a well worked free kick finishing neatly into the teacher’s goal.2-0

With a few tactical subs made by the teachers, and an injection of fresh legs the teachers pressed the ball high and their efforts were rewarded with a goal to Nick Alidenes. 2-1. Shane Robinson was next on the score sheet for the teachers to level it up with some typical ‘roll the sleeves up, can do attitude.’ 2-2.

Next was a moment that no-one witnessing that day would have ever expected. A 45metre long ball found an unmarked Ky Dula in open space inside the teacher’s 18 yard box. He leapt into the air and struck the ball on the volley into the top corner of the goal. A goal that wouldn’t be out of place in a World Cup Final! 3-2 students.

The game progressed and Darren Moakes arrived late at the back post from a corner to head home and level the scores 3-3 with a few minutes remaining. The game looked destined for a draw until the students made a lightning quick counter attack and found Aaron Hosie open to tap into the goal to win the match 4-3 – students win! Congrats and thanks to everyone involved.

Griffith On-Campus Experience

On 10 August, Year 11 and 12 students had the privilege of attending a wonderful university on-campus experience at Griffith University. The day started with a leadership workshop and team building activities, enabling us to think outside the box and strategize efficiently. After the leadership workshop we were given the opportunity to engage in a Q&A and ask any relevant questions regarding our future pathways. We were very grateful that after the workshops, Griffith provided us with a delicious lunch which we enjoyed whilst viewing the scenery of the campus. Following this, we delved deep into learning and visited the state-of-the-art science labs for some interesting experiments on sunscreen. To end the day, we had the honour of participating in a seminar with Doctor Harry, an inspiring teacher of teachers! He engaged us regarding the world of teaching, leaving us with many reasons to consider teaching as a career path. Everyone involved was extremely friendly and hospitable, making our day at Griffith highly welcoming and enjoyable.

Netball – Vicki Wilson Shield

IMG_7472.JPG

Earlier this year, the Junior girls netball excellence entered two teams into the Vicki Wilson qualifiers competition, one of which made it through to the Vicki Wilson Final Championship held in Nissan Arena, Brisbane. For weeks the girls trained hard to achieve their goal of taking out the Championship. The team started off the first day of competition blistering and ready to compete, winning all games but one. This meant that the girls qualified for the finals, top 8 in Queensland. The girls played the first game of the second day with high stakes to make the semi-finals and steal an opportunity to the grand finale. After a long hard game with injuries and more, the girls came out on top, making it to the semi-finals. This declares the team top 4 in Queensland, an outstanding achievement in itself. The next game consisted of a team that the girls have never beaten, and the nerves had taken over. Unfortunately, the girls lost this game as well as their chance at the grand final. Lastly to conclude the competition the team played off for 3rd and 4th, finishing in the fourth spot. It was an amazing competition for our netball girls, and they played some of the toughest netball many of the girls had ever played. The team showed courage, strength, and integrity and displayed what it means to be a red not only on court but off court as well.
