Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Sgalippa_Anita.jpg

The last fortnight has been a busy one for our senior school with plans being put in place for both the future beyond PBC and for senior studies commencing in 2023.

We have also almost finalised our enrolments for Year 7 Excellence programs for 2023.

This week works will begin on our new Sports Hall, a $10.6 million investment by the state government in our local area. The facility will hold 2 basketball courts marked up for several indoor games and a retail section for health services as well as staffrooms and offices for the school.

Last month our P&C struggled to get a quorum, so we are hopeful to attract some new membership to make this a vibrant part of our school that reflects our school community. A high school P&C runs differently to a primary school one and our focus is less on fundraising and more on staying connected to what is happening at the school and assisting with strategic direction and facility planning. If you are interested to be involved we look forward to seeing you on the third Tuesday of each month.

I hope you enjoy this issue of our newsletter.

Welcome to Week 6 – a very busy and exciting time in junior secondary with assessments and many extra-curricular opportunities also occurring.

With the borders now open to the world, many families are taking the opportunity to travel to visit family or for holidays. We encourage families to schedule this travel during school holidays wherever possible. If you do need to travel during the school term, please know that the school cannot grant an exemption from compulsory schooling for this reason. If you are choosing to travel during the school term, please notify the school of the absence period and inform classroom teachers. To continue their learning and assessment, students are to access their Class OneNote. They are also welcome to communicate any questions about the content to their teacher via email. Teachers are not required to supply individual or different work to the student when they are absent due to travel, nor will exemptions for assessment be granted. If your travel is overseas, students will need to see our tech department to ensure they will still have access to the network.

As we are approaching the half-way mark for Term 3, this is a great opportunity to check in with your children to see how they are going with their assessments and time management. What do they have coming up? Are they allocating time after school to keep up with the demands? It is important to get students into good study habits in junior secondary so that they are ready for the demands of senior secondary and time management is something that our young people often need help with. For some it comes naturally, but for most it is a habit that needs support to form. Monday afternoon tutorials, held in the Library during Period 4, are a wonderful way to keep on top of homework and assessments with additional support. Also, Thursday tutoring after school.

At PBC, after school detentions are often issued for a variety of reasons when students have breached the Optima Code. The success of these detentions in terms of changing behaviour and future choices, is hinged on the student attending the detention. Students who fail to attend the detention without an approved reason, may progress to an external suspension. We are encouraging families to facilitate their child’s attendance at the afternoon detention to avoid further consequences.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have had so many successful outcomes with our students representing PBC in a variety of sports and cultural events. Well done to all of the students and teachers who put in the additional hours that lead to this excellence and success.

The Track & Field Carnival was a wonderful success with so many students engaged and participating in both sporting and non-sporting events to represent and earn house points. The fun had by all students was evident; a lot of organisation and planning goes into large whole-school events such as these and all staff involved are to be commended.

Don’t miss out on the Junior School House Camps, spaces are filling quickly. Permission slips are available from D Block and need to be returned ASAP as spaces are limited. This is a wonderful opportunity for students create lifelong memories with their friends and build house culture and team spirit – essential aspects of positive psychology and creating a sense of belonging.

The 2023 Year 8 Student Leader process is currently underway. Last week, short-listed students participated in a group interview and the final leadership decision will be announced this week. Thank you to all students who applied, it was marvellous to see such a large number of students as aspiring future leaders.

A huge thankyou to our Senior School community for your support in some significant Senior School events in recent weeks. Over the past fortnight alone we have had the opportunity to celebrate the successes of our Year 10's, 11's and 12's through the Mid-Year OPTIMA Awards. We hope both recipients and parents alike enjoyed the changes to the format of these awards and it was wonderful to get together to acknowledge some wonderful achievements. Thanks also must go to all parents and students who attended both the Year 12 Pathways Information Evening and Year 10 SET Plan process. Both of these processes are vital to ensuring the success of all of our students and align their study path with their chosen field outside of our school gates.

A special mention and good luck to all of our Creative Arts students - many of whom are participating across multiple disciplines in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod commencing this week. We have a rich and proud history of success in the Arts and look forward to watching you represent our school with pride.

Year 10 students are reminded that they are much better off commencing a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SAT) in Yea r10 than in Year 11. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information regarding SATs.

Senior Study Skills – Year 12 students

Sunshine Coast All Schools Touch Football

On the weekend of Week 3, the Sport Excellence Touch Football Girls travelled to the Sunshine Coast for their first big competition of the year. After an early start and a long bus ride on Saturday, the girls started their trip with rock climbing, where Charlotte North, Lilika Yamada and Martine Brekhoff-Jones were particularly impressive at defying gravity. Then, after some training on the oval, the girls were thrown into six teams and competed in games such as; blind folded pool noodle sword fighting, trivia, cup stacking, long distance dart throwing and much more. The White team of Romaney Berry, Martine, Mikayla Robison, Amali Nixon, Tayah Cubby, Sienna Hodges and Jayah Hall were the ultimate champions despite the efforts of Kaiya Tom, who was terrifying with a pool noodle in hand.

The next day, it was off to the Glasshouse Mountains to play some touch. All three teams were outstanding with the Open Girls finishing runners up and the Under 15 and Under 13 teams winning the Championship. The Open Girls dominated their round games with some sensational skills. Captain Sierrah Dawson and the Year 12’s led by example, setting an extremely high standard and the Year 11’s and 10’s really stepped up to the moment. But in the final, Chancellor’s rucking and shooting was just too good.

In the Under 15’s, the girls were utterly dominant. Evie Clarkson, who was player of the final and the rest of the Under 15’s were unstoppable, winning the grand final by an extremely impressive score of 6 to 0. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, the Under 13’s won their grand final in extra time. They scored with 30 seconds to go to tie the game and then played twenty minutes of extra time, eighteen of which was played with only 3 players on each team. But finally, with sun having set and emotions at breaking point, Alexi Fabian set up Emmi Cross in the corner for the game winner. Jaida Flores was also unbelievable and due to her devastating speed with the ball was named player of the final.

We were also very lucky to have former PBC graduate, Teagan Phillips, volunteer to give up her weekend and coach the Under 13 team. She showed an extremely level head under incredible pressure and was a fantastic role model and leader for the young group of girls.

Thank you so much to all of the girls for their efforts and also a huge thank you to the parents for their support. We are now looking forward to QLD All Schools which is the biggest touch football tournament in the world, with over 300 teams competing. It will be held at the Runaway Bay Sports Centre, at the end of Week 1, Term 4 and we would love to see as many people from the PBC community as possible in attendance to cheer our girls on.

Geoff Eggert and Ty Russell, Sport Excellence Touch Football Coaches

AFL Junior Boys

A massive thank you to our PBC Alliance Partners Southport Sharks and Fraser Financial Services for their sponsorship of the junior boys AFL team's recent tour of Melbourne.

The team travelled south with the aim of trying to take their individual and team performance to the next level in preparation for their upcoming knock out finals in the Q Cup competition.

After touching down at Tullamarine in was straight off to the National Sports Museum at the MCG. The boys had some time in the interactive games section before moving through the museum itself. It was wonderful when Nate Round came across his grandfather's Brownlow medal and Riley Clark could show the team his mother's Olympic Gold medal that was on loan to the museum. After the museum visit it was on to the famous Melbourne trams to travel to our hotel. Once settled it was off to the dinner and then a team meeting for the next's day match against Albert Park Senior College.

On a cold and rather overcast day (at least it wasn't raining) the boys arrived at South Melbourne district football club that is located inside the F1 race precinct. The Melbourne skyline made a wonderful backdrop. Albert Park jumped the undefeated PBC Reds and went into quarter time with a handy lead and then kicked the first two goals of the second quarter to go out to a twenty point margin. The Reds rallied well and kicked the next 4 goals to go into half time one goal up.

The second half saw the Reds improve their contested ball wins and run. Slowly but surely they put a gap on the opposition who couldn't go with them to run out comfortable winners. Congratulations to Deacon Streader and Dylan Patterson for their best on ground performances.

Overall the boys were wonderful to take away and they represented the Reds well leaving a positive impression on the people they met. They received lots of recognition for their manners and general conduct.

Finally to all the relatives of the boys who came down from Queensland and from all over Victoria thank you for your support. It was lovely to see the young men supported so well and having the opportunity to catch up with family.

Neil Mackay and Danny Darnett, Sports Excellence Snr AFL Boys Coaches

Spark their future

2020_DoE_Spark_177_reduced_size_1600x560.jpg

It might be something you’ve never noticed, or something you’ve seen for years.

Finding their spark

When your child is struggling at school or refusing to go to school, knowing you are on their side is what matters most. Every child has something to offer and deserves success, whatever that looks like for them. Keep believing in your child and work with them to find something that brings them joy – an activity or interest they want to spend time on. When your child does something they enjoy and can learn to do it well, it helps build their confidence. Over time, and with the right support, you can grow that spark inside your child. And as your child’s confidence grows, and with your help, they will feel ready to get their learning back on track so they can get the most out of going to school.

Nippers Sign on…

TH&C Surf Lifesaving Club has a large number of families from the PBC community in our club, and we’re keen to keep this connection going into our new season. Several current PBC students have competed and placed nationally through our Surf Sports programme, and we’ve just launched an elite squad program to extend this support for our junior members in the water and on the beach. We’d love to see more students take advantage of this in the upcoming season.
