Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.jpgTerm 1, with all the disruptions hopefully behind us, finishes next Friday with school recommencing on Tuesday 19 April.  A number of our events have been moved to Term 2, so it is going to be exceptionally busy from April to June. Term 2 events will include, School 50th Anniversary Open Day, ANZAC Day, GC5 Sports Days, NAPLAN, end of semester assessments and a host of other events and activities.

On Friday we have our first PBC Alliance breakfast of the year. The PBC Alliance exists to promote school and business partnerships. The Alliance has an extremely successful track record at facilitating student work placements, vocational education brokering and school sponsorship opportunities. The breakfast is a fully catered event with the Hospitality Students showcasing their skills. For more information about the PBC Alliance please contact Heidi Wallace on 5525 9312 or alliance@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au

Our Covid-19 positive numbers have been slowly declining as the term progresses. The current protocols in place regarding testing, isolation and informing the school of positive cases will remain in place next term.

I will be taking Long Service Leave for the first three weeks of Term 2. John Cattoni, Principal of Currumbin SS, will be the Acting Principal whilst I am away. John is looking forward to working with the former Currumbin SS students and meeting the students from the larger PBC community.

Reports

Reports will be out early next term for Term One’s work and so it’s a key time to reflect with your child on the efforts that they are putting in at school each day and on their ‘at home’ tasks and assignment work. Questions to ask them, as a good place to start are

  • Do they think they are putting in their best each lesson and all lesson?
  • What is getting in the way of them doing their best?

Term 1 Reports are interim reports, giving grades to indicate your student’s academic progress as well as their effort and behaviour in each subject. If you do not have an email address registered at PBC, then a Report will be mailed home.

Parent interviews are in Week 4 (10, 11 and 12 May) and I would encourage you to meet with your child's teachers to work together to get the best outcomes for them.

Along with reflecting on this completed term it's also the time to set some goals for the new term and what actions will be needed to achieve them. I ask our teachers and our students to challenge themselves in this goal setting as it’s from discomfort and pushing ourselves that great growth will come.

NAPLAN

In week 4 and 5 our Year 7 and 9s will be sitting NAPLAN exams, these exam results are used by our English and Maths teachers to tailor programs to continue to build on the literacy and numeracy skills as the students move on to the next year level.  Our staff and those at the primary schools have been working on building the skills needed for these exams for years.

The students will be sitting the following:

  • Language Conventions ( grammar, punctuation, spelling) 40 minutes
  • Writing 65 minutes
  • Reading 45 minutes
  • Numeracy 65 minutes

Should your child be absent for any of the tests, they will be provided with a catch-up session. Students require their school laptops charged for the day as usual, a pair of headphones will be issued to students for use during the exam period but they are welcome to bring their own pair. They will also need a pen or pencil for use on their scribble paper.

Senior Secondary is a busy place as Term 1 comes to a close, with all year levels entering assessment periods. It is particularly vital at this time that students are prepared and aware of assessment policies and schedules, with effective preparation for assessment being vital for students navigating their final years. Thankyou also to our Senior Students who attended the recent Swimming Carnival. Due to COVID, this carnival was delayed this year so we appreciate that the timing for Seniors wasn't ideal, however those that did attend represented their Houses and PBC with pride. Well done to all Age Champion athletes in particular who had a big day in the pool!

Year 10 and Year 12 Shutdown Exams

Year 10 and 12 students commence shutdown on Wednesday of Week 10, Term 1 (30 March to 1 April). Please note that Monday and Tuesday of Week 10 are normal, compulsory school days. The timetable for senior assessment and the school assessment policy has been published on the school website. All students need to be aware of the date, room and time of their scheduled exam.

Year 11 Assessment

Many Year 11 classes have had an interim piece of assessment completed in the last two weeks. Year 11 students will finalise their Unit 1 assessment in Week 4/5 of Term 2 in mid-May this year. As per QCAA guidelines students cannot change subjects mid Unit so no subject changes are available to Year 11s until late May.

All assessment tasks are due at 9:00am on the due date not during class time. Students who are absent for an exam will need to provide a medical certificate and apply for a change of date with their HOD on the next day they are at school. Similarly students who are applying for an extension or special consideration will need to download an extension/change of date form from the school website and submit to their relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date.

Year 10 Results Matter

Students in Year 10 are reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 Semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in Year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

Reports

Year 10 and 12 reports will be issued early in Term 2. Year 11 reports should be emailed home on the last day of school.

Year 12 First Aid and Safety course

All Year 12 students and parents were recently emailed a letter regarding an upcoming First Aid and Safety course. This is a very useful qualification and all students that have not completed these qualifications are encouraged to complete the course. This course has a cost of $75 and will attain 2 QCE points. Students can register by contacting Ms Golding in the library ( jgold61@eq.edu.au ).

VETis courses

All students in Senior are eligible to receive VET in School (VETis) funding to complete a VET certificate that the government deem are in demand. Many students utilise this funding in timetabled classes for example Construction, Health Services, and Hospitality and Fitness classes. Other VETis course are advertised in the student notices and school newsletter. These may include going to an outside college or provider 1 day per week (e.g. TAFE). Students who are not aiming for a tertiary pathway are particularly encouraged to complete a VETis funded course as this will increase their chance of gaining employment once they leave school. Please contact Ms McQueen in F block if you require more information.

Other senior schooling news:

Year 10s and 11s are encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.

Rugby League

275416887_3025071794412169_4566100519479747419_n.jpg

Last Wednesday the Rookie Reds travelled to Beenleigh to compete in the Tonie Carroll Cup for their first competitive matches for the year. With 9 of the squad unavailable due to U12 Oceanic trials on the same day and 2 more missing due to illness and injury the Reds travelled with only the minimum 17 players. That however would prove to be enough as we defeated Caloundra 3 Tries to 1, before going on to beat Beenleigh 5 tries to nil, Marsden B 4 tries to nil and finally Ipswich 2 Tries to nil. To only have 1 Try scored against us when playing much bigger opposition was easily the most pleasing aspect but we also scored some sensational team tries which showed that the Rookies had already learned what Reds Footy was.  Our player of the Tournament was our left centre Jaylon Russell, who led the way in Attack and Defence. Congratulations Boys!!!

Basketball

Grip Star Socks

Gripstarsocksv2.jpg

Thank you to Joel (PBC alumni) and his fantastic team at Grip Star Socks who have donated 500 pairs of their awesome training socks to our Sports Excellence students, giving each player one pair across the soccer, rugby league and AFL programs! AMAZING!

All Grip Star crew socks feature:

  • Traction creating anti-slip panels on the sole that improve speed, acceleration and stability.
  • Breathable mesh on the foot upper that draws away sweat to reduce odors and fight fungus.
  • Padded foot to reduce impact and friction injuries to feet and toes, including blisters, bruising and calluses.
  • Snug and supportive fit to promote circulation and reduce muscle fatigue.
  • Durable construction that thrives in the toughest settings and holds up wash after wash.
  • Cutting edge design that delivers maximum comfort and flexibility.

Our students started wearing these socks last year and they have been a huge hit. Thank you Grip Star Socks for supporting the training of our students
