Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.JPGThe last few school weeks have seen us adjust school operations again to comply with the latest Public Health Directives and Border Closure.  Currently we have 40 school staff in total working from home in NSW with over 30 teachers delivering their lessons via Teams with another teacher physically in the classroom to assist with lesson delivery. Most teachers are having to prepare two types of lessons to support both the QLD and NSW students to ensure that lesson delivery continues to close as normal as possible. Although Teams lessons are being offered to the NSW students, QLD students should still be coming to school every day and not opting to learn from home.

The school is in regular communication with the QCAA about Year 12 ATAR assessments and the impact that any ongoing border closure may have on students. The Senior Secondary team will send home information to the students who are residing in NSW about preparation for mock exams, external exams and assessments closer to the actual sitting dates if the border remains closed.

With the easing of a number of Covid restrictions this week, the school is now attempting to re-schedule a number of school events such as Optima Award Assemblies, NAIDOC Day, Sports Excellence finals and performing arts culminating activities. School excursions, assemblies, off-site extra-curricular activities and third party educational providers all return this week.

Optima Awards

Recently, we have had to delay our OPTIMA assemblies. We will be in touch regarding new dates once restrictions have been lifted or eased.

Rewards

We know that students respond well to positive acknowledgement, not only through major awards but for small successes and actions in the classroom and playground. At PBC, we have various informal ways of rewarding students. In the classroom, teachers may hand out small prizes. More formally, teachers distribute OPTIMA Rewards, small tickets to acknowledge students being safe, respectful or a learner. Teachers will sometimes send home OPTIMA postcards to let parents know that their children have had a special achievement or success. At least 550 of these more formal rewards have been distributed so far this year, helping to create a positive, productive learning environment.

Planning for Success

We have already reached the mid-point of Term 3 and students are currently receiving feedback on their first rounds of assessment. It is valuable to support children to look for ways to improve, so they might reach their OPTIMA goals, recorded in their Student Planners. Are they on track? If not, what is it that they might do differently in order to achieve their goals?

Assessment Calendars

Parents are reminded that the assessment calendar is now published on the PBC website. Students and parents should all make careful note of these important dates.

Exam Timetables

Exam timetables and schedules for Years 10, 11 and 12 will be published on the school website shortly: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment

  • Year 12 full shutdown all of Week 9 and 10 (6 to 17 September) for Mock exams and Applied Assessment. Specific arrangements are being organised for Tweed students.
  • Year 11 full shutdown Week 10 (13 to 17 September)
  • Year 10 full shutdown Tuesday to Friday of Week 10 (13 to 17 September)

Note:

As External exams will commence at 9:00am, PBC will have the same start time for Mock exams. For consistency and due to the vertical nature of Care roll marking the following arrangements will occur:

  • All end of Term 3 exams will commence at 9:00am for Years 10 to 12
  • Senior Care Roll marking classes will not run in Weeks 9 and 10 of term
  • Period 1 teachers will read notices and give messages, and attendance details will be collated on Period 1 data

Assessment Policy

The senior assessment policy is published on the school website.

If students are absent for an exam they must contact their teacher and provide a medical certificate (allowances will be made for border restrictions).

A reminder that all assignments are due at 9:00am on the due date and that teachers are instructed to make a judgement on the evidence, which is available at this time. Late assignments are not accepted.

Students are reminded to back up their work via USBs, emails or cloud storage as computer malfunctions and losing assignments are not grounds for an extension.

Year 10

SETP – Year 11 (2022) Subject Selections Completed

Thank you to the students and their supportive parents for engaging in our SETP process this year to ensure that each and every one of our students will start their Year 11 studies in the correct pathway. In addition, thank you to the Senior Team Mentors who gave up their time to conduct these phone interviews. It was a credit to our staff, students and parents on their ability to adapt to our current environment to complete this process. With numerous staff and students working and learning remotely from NSW, we came together as a team to ensure that every student can succeed.

If your student has not selected their subjects online, if you could not attend an interview to finalise your student's subject selections or indeed, if your student will not be returning to PBC next year, please contact Jason Cross at jcros40@eq.edu.au.

Engagement at School

The compulsory participation phase in education or training starts when a young person stops being of compulsory school age (16 years of age) or completes Year 10. Many of our Year 10 students may have already entered the participation phase of school as they have already turned 16. During this phase, a young person must participate in an eligible option if they are not working full-time. An eligible option is provided by learning institutions such as state schools and non-state schools, universities, TAFE institutes or registered training organisations. Students are required to engage in learning when enrolled with an educational institution. At PBC SHS engagement is considered to be:

  • Attending all scheduled classes on time
  • Completing all draft and final assessments on or before the due date
  • Applying themselves to set tasks to the best of their ability at all times
  • Attending school each and every day in full school uniform

Our school attendance target is 92%; this includes both explained and unexplained absences. We thank you for your support and I look forward to working with you and your student/s to ensure that they are set up for success beyond our school gates.

Year 10 students are reminded that they are much better off commencing a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SAT) in Year10 than in Year 11. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information regarding SATs.

Year 11

Year 11 students will finalise Unit 2 in shutdown during Week 10 of this term 13 to 17 September.

Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in Term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of 22 to 26 November.

A reminder that all students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete Unit 1 or 2 again in 2022 to be eligible for the QCE.

Year 12

Year 12s will be sent a cumulative report of their results for Unit 3 and 4 this week. This will be the last report that year 12 students will receive from PBC as final exit level of achievement and results are determined by the QCAA.

The QCAA no longer mails out certificates and results to students at the end of the year. On 18 December they will provide a digital copy of results into each students’ QCAA learning account.

All Year 12 students should by now have logged onto their QCAA learning account in the QCAA student portal. This is accessed via the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html.

Please check that your student has completed this. They have been reminded on many occasions and sent emails regarding this but we can see that there are still some students that have not yet registered.

The QCAA has also updated the schedule for External Exams due to the change of the Brisbane Show Holiday affecting exams. This means that Health Education, Music and Economics are scheduled as the first exams on 22 October.

To access the External Assessment timetable please visit the myQCE website:

https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/external-assessment/timetable

2021 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2020, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2021.

For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.
