1 February 2021

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Capra_Christopher.jpgWelcome back as we start our 2021 school year with a flurry of activity.  We anticipate that by our Day 8 census, 2608 students will be in regular attendance. Last week witnessed a smooth start to the year as students returned to their classes. Over the next few weeks, most students will receive their summative assessment schedule/items. Students are being encouraged to start their forward planning, using their student diaries now. In addition, in Care Classes last week, students were handed a Swimming Carnival permission form as well as an envelope for the 2021 school photos.

Work has commenced on the installation of pedestrian traffic lights to replace the existing unmanned crossing on Thrower Drive. Visibility has been reduced in this area for both vehicles and pedestrians whilst the works are carried out. In addition, road works related to the M1 upgrade has reduced traffic flow, resulting in the streets around the school experiencing heavier and slower moving traffic flows after school in comparison to last year. Please remain patient and vigilant around the school area whilst these works are undertaken. Road Enforcement Command have had speed cameras operating in the school zone today.

Capital Works projects being administered by Q Build continue their progress at school. After fixing the significant water damage that we suffered over the holidays due to the inclement weather, the school’s electrical switchboards are being upgraded to ensure that the new air-conditioners will work effectively and efficiently.   The new Sports Precinct Project Design Brief has been accepted and we are now waiting for the Project Coordinator to be appointed.

Regards,
Chris Capra
Executive Principal

CRICOS Provider Name: The Queensland Department of Education trading as Education Queensland International (EQI) CRICOS Provider Number 00608A

Welcome to all of our students back to a new year, with a special welcome to the Year 10 cohort joining Senior Secondary and to our wonderful Year 12's who embark on their final year as the Class of 2021. We enjoyed some outstanding results from our graduating cohort in 2020, as we navigated the previously uncharted waters of the new ATAR and QCE systems and we look forward to further improving the experience that is the senior curriculum for our students this year.

As students settle into new spaces, classrooms and teaching staff we have reminded students again of our OPTIMA Code - the base set of values that underpin everything we do at PBC - Being Safe, Being Respectful and Being A Learner. Students are well-versed in these values that help all of us, staff included, in working to become the best versions of ourselves everyday. It has been a pleasure to see Senior Students settle well into new environments and adapt to the rigours that a new year level always introduces.

Parents are reminded that all student notes for late entry, uniform, absences and early sign-outs are to be taken to the Y Block Senior School Office before 9:00am of the corresponding morning. We are thrilled to welcome our Senior Guidance Officer - Steve Jones and Senior Inclusion Coordinator - Guy Fitter to Y Block to complete our Senior Schooling student support hub.

Good luck to all parents, families and students in 2021, we look forward to working with every student as they become valued members of the community.

Year 10 Notices

As Year 10 students embark on their senior studies it is worthwhile to recognise at this early stage that results in Semester 1 will determine their pathway and subject availability in Years 11 and 12. To study an ATAR pathway students need to be achieving at least a B level in English and Maths. If students wish to study senior Science subjects they also need to be achieving at least a B level in Year 10 Science, (Academic Excellence students will have slightly different cut offs). We encourage every Year 10 student to do their very best in every subject.

We also highly recommend that Year 10 students consider commencing a school based apprenticeship and traineeship (SATS). These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options. Students that are interested in this should come and visit Ms Shreeve in Y Block.

Subject changes for Year 10 have now been finalised. Students will have the opportunity to change classes at the end of the semester.

Year 11 Notices

Year 11 students will need to have very good time management in 2020 as the units for each subject are only 7 weeks in length including assessment. It is essential that student are passing their courses at the end of each unit in order to bank QCE credit points. If a student falls behind in QCE credit points they may be required to take part in additional studies outside of regular class time to catch up. If a student needs help in keeping up with the requirements of Year 11 they should come to Y block and ask to speak with a member of the Senior School team.

Term 1 Year 11 is the last opportunity for students to start a school based traineeship. These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options. Students that are interested in this should come and visit Ms Shreeve in Y Block.

Subject changes for Year 11 have now been finalised. Students will have the opportunity to change classes at the end of Unit 1.

Year 12 Notices

Year 12 students have completed their first summative assessment item from Unit 3 in most subjects at the end of last term. The final IA1’s will be complete in the coming weeks. Students should be speaking to their individual subject teachers about their performance on this assessment and how they can improve. We remind all students in Year 11 and 12 that they need to be passing at least 5 of their 6 subjects to remain on track for a QCE. All students who are doing VET subjects must also ensure they are up to date at the end of each term.

Useful websites

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority website is a great source of information on the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Senior Education Training (SET) Plan, future pathways, subjects and assessment. It also has useful study tips and strategies to help students progress in their learning.

All Year 11 and 12 students should be in the process of completing an online QCAA Academic Integrity course via this student portal (https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/).

Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 will soon be uploaded to the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au. Click on the curriculum tab and then under testing and assessment. Students can also download this information from the K drive on the school’s network. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.

Assessment Calendars

Please note that Year 11 assessment will be finalised in weeks 7 and 8 of term 1 and then occur after each 7-week block of teaching. All Year 10 and 12 assessment will be finalised in the last week of each term (week 10).

Welcome back for 2021

This week we welcomed 430 Year 7 students to our junior secondary school plus an additional 33 new Year 8 and 9 students. I have been very pleased to see the year start off so smoothly.

We always start with a clear focus on our school motto Nil Sed Optima which means nothing but the best - we ask students to set goals to be their best and we will support and assist them every step to achieve those goals.

We wish everyone the most productive and happy year and we look forward to working with you. Junior Secondary is being led by a fabulous team who will support your young people in any endeavours or problems they have.

PBC’s Junior Secondary School has commenced with energy and enthusiasm, as students were introduced to both their Care Classes and new academic classes. There has been a positive buzz about the Junior Secondary that augurs well for the students’ endeavours. For Year 7, this is a time of great change, while in Years 8 and 9, students are adjusting to the raised expectations and demands on their learning.

Year 7 Parent Information Evening

Year 7 Parents please look out for your emailed invitation to our Year 7 Parent Information Night. The night will include some introductions across two alternating short sessions including – laptop use at home, practical tips for parent controls and a visit to your child’s care classroom hosted by their English/Humanities and Maths/Science teachers. We will also discuss Year 7 Camp. The night will conclude at 7:00 pm. Parents attending should bring their child’s student planner with their student timetable in it. You will be greeted at the main entrance and directed to your first venue as this will vary depending on your child’s class.

Assessment Calendar

Each student has received a PBC Student Planner, in which they record their homework, important dates and assignment deadlines. To help students get organised and stay organised, the Assessment Calendar will be published on the PBC website in Week 4 and emailed to parents. Parents and students can easily access this information so that they can predict the busy times and plan for them. Students should also be using their student planners to note homework and important dates.

Year 9 Behaviour and Welfare Update

This year has a strong emphasis on the personal development of our Year 9 young people as they navigate their way towards Senior Secondary. Students will find that they are both given and are expected to have greater responsibly for their choices and actions every day.

Our mantra this year is ‘Make a life of choice, not chance’. Making the best of all of the learning opportunities at PBC means that young people will maximise the choices they have when they leave school. Naturally, students with outstanding effort and behaviour are most likely to achieve the best outcomes. We look forward to our students attending every day, on time, and fully engaging in the learning process.

Care Term 1

VIA_classification_of_character_strengths.jpg

Students are utilising their time in Care during Term 1 to develop a greater sense of self-identity through the Who Am I? Unit. Concepts including Character Strengths, shadow sides, personal learning styles, positive self-talk and the impact of social media on self-identity are being covered.  Parents are encouraged to continue these conversations with their child at home.

Research shows that having a greater sense of self-identity and awareness correlates with enhanced wellbeing. Students that have a good understanding of themselves are less likely to look to others for their opinions and their approval. Knowing who you are allows you to live with purpose, develop healthy relationships and contributes to good emotional health.  Parents are invited to take the VIA Character Strengths Survey (www.viacharacter.org) which students will be completing in care class soon as a link between school and home. Are your strengths the same as your child’s?

Swimming Carnival

The 2021 PBC Swimming Carnival is fast approaching and the energy is palpable!

Years 7-9 will take to the pool on Tuesday 9 February, with the Seniors (Years 10-12) competing on Wednesday 10 February - 9:00am-3.05pm.

Students should have brought home their permission notes this week. These must be completed and returned asap. A reminder that our Swimming Carnival is a compulsory school day, with no scheduled classes occurring at school. Students can participate in competitive races as well as participation based fun races and events. As a major carnival on our calendar, it is a hotly contested House based competition, with 100 House Points, age champion trophies and district qualifications up for grabs. We have no doubt the students will represent their House with pride.

To ensure all students are kept busy throughout the day - the inflatable fun is back!! For $5, students can purchase a wristband, which will permit use of the giant Slip and Slides, Dunk Tank, Waterslides and inflatable obstacle courses.

Please ensure your student has applied sunscreen before leaving home and remind them to reapply throughout the day. Sunscreen will be available at the carnival.  Students must also wear a sleeved t-shirt or rash shirt and enclosed shoes to enter the pool. Students are also reminded that swimwear must be appropriate for a school event.

The Senior Student Council will be running a BBQ and the pool canteen will have other food and drink available for purchase. Students can also bring their own lunch. A water bottle is a necessity, as no doubt it will be a hot day.

Don’t forget to dress up in your House colours!
