Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week sees the recommencement of our Optima Awards assemblies where we recognise outstanding student behaviour, effort, achievement and representation. Another eagerly awaited school event which returns next week is the Staff vs Students events. A range of sport and academic endeavours see the seniors compete against the staff at the first break each day. A range of inter-house activities also commence in the coming weeks including PBCs Got Talent. Information about what is happening is told to the students each day in daily notices.
Although the school is attempting to make life as normal as possible for the students, COVID-19 preventative measures are still in place at the school. We still have additional cleaning hours to keep high traffic areas safe and we are still using stronger cleaning products. We have restricted adult attendance at school functions and in some cases have prevented any parent attendance. We do monitor the latest COVID-19 updates and adjust our plans accordingly, so please understand that the decisions we make are based on the information that we have at the time in an effort to keep the school community safe.
Well done to the Junior Debating Team who have now defeated the Qld Academy of Health Sciences and Somerset College to be undefeated in 2020.
Three of four football teams have qualified for the Premier League semi-finals. The senior girls were unlucky not to move on even though they didn’t lose a game.

Year 12
Our Year 12 students will have important assessment in Week 9 and 10 of this term as they attempt to maximise their results to improve their post schooling pathways. The school will conduct Mock Exams for General subjects and finalise assessment for Applied and VET subjects during this time. The schedule for these exams and plans for Term 4 has been sent by email to parents.
Students also have access to another practice exam for all General subjects on the QCAA website. This should be used in preparation for both the upcoming Mock Exam and the External Assessment. As an example, the practice External exams for General Maths and General English can be located on the following links:
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects/english/english/assessment
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects/mathematics/general-mathematics/assessment
It is expected that all students complete these practice exams for their General subjects in preparation for their External Assessment.
Parents and students should be familiarising themselves with the myQCE website and its link to External assessment: https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/external-assessment.html.
This page is very useful as it:
- Explains the changes to assessment due to coronavirus
- Has links on how to prepare for External assessments
- States the equipment allowed to be taken into all exams and the specific equipment including type of calculator permitted for each subject
- Includes the Directions to Students document which explains the behavioural requirements for all External exams
- Includes the External Assessment timetable
- This site also has some good tips on effective study skills and preparing for external assessments in the section Preparing for Assessments.
Engineering Aptitude Test
Any student interested in studying Engineering in 2021 at Griffith University, that may not have completed the necessary pre-requisite subjects required should consider sitting this test in September. Please see https://www.griffith.edu.au/griffith-sciences/school-engineering-built-environment/learning-teaching/aptitude-for-engineering-assessment for more information or contact Mr Jones.
Year 11
Year 11 students are in the middle of Unit 2 and will finalise this Unit in shutdown during Week 10 of this term 14 to 18 September. The schedule of these exams will be finalised shortly and published on the school website.
Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in Term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of 23 to 27 November.
A reminder that all students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete a VET certificate that meets the requirements of the QCE. This course will have a cost of $300.

Maximising Learning In The Senior School
At PBC, we encourage all students to achieve their best, whatever their ‘best’ might be. Students working to improve are urged to apply the following techniques across all their subjects:
- Set a goal for each subject
- Use the OPTIMA planner in your diary and know what you are aiming for this term
- Know what is required
- Understand what your assessment tasks require and the criteria by which you will be assessed. Focus on these in your work.
- Manage your time
- Know your due dates and be sure your family knows them too. Break big tasks into smaller tasks, such as researching an assignment, writing a draft or reviewing the notes of a section of a course. Set yourself regular deadlines.
- When you need help, seek it out
- Don’t settle at ‘I don’t get it’ – find help until you do! Start by speaking with your class teacher, perhaps before school or during a break.
- Follow up
- Review your notes, write down your questions, do your homework, read around a topic. Such strategies will help improve your factual recall and your understanding.

Assessment Calendar Published
The Term 3 Assessment Calendar has now been emailed to all parents and published on the PBC Website. Use the drop down menus to go to Curriculum / Testing and Assessment and open the relevant year level calendar on the right hand side of the screen. In Assemblies, students have been told how to access this information and use it to fill out the Forward Planner in their diaries with their particular assessment dates. Students should make a copy of it to be displayed on the fridge or another public place in the home, so families are aware of their commitments. Please support your Junior Secondary students to develop good habits and be an active part of our learning community.
Selection of 2021 Junior School Student Leaders
From Week 5, we will begin the process of selecting next year’s leaders. These students, chosen from the current Year 8 cohort, will prepare for their roles during Term 4.
Next year, they will represent Junior Secondary at public events and Parent Evenings and serve as a voice of the Year 7s, 8s and 9s on their House Council and the Junior Secondary Council. They will run fundraising and community building events and constantly seek ways to improve the school for our students.
If your Year 8 child is confident, reliable and enjoys leadership opportunities, please encourage them to stay tuned for information in the daily Student Notices, ‘put their hand up’ when asked and complete an application form. Shortlisted students will be interviewed later in the term.
Shock Therapy Theatre performance
All Year 9-12 Drama and Drama Excellence students attended a moving and inspiring performance by Shock Therapy Productions on Monday 20 July 2020.”Undertow” is an original work, which explores themes of resilience, mental health, relationships, identity and empathy. The original play is an honest and powerful look at the hidden forces, beneath the surface that move us and determine the choices we make and the actions we take.
Senior Music Excellence Concert
The Senior Music Excellence concert is a showcase of the musical talent at PBC. It gives students from Years 10, 11 and 12 the opportunity to present their work to a live audience of family, friends and the wider community. Throughout the year, students have been developing their technical skills and personal expression to realise their potential as performers. With a focus on collaboration, this concert will feature an array of musical styles ranging from classic 70’s rock’n’roll to futuristic jazz. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited tickets available.
Working Musicians Program
The Working Musicians Program is back in full flight with weekly song writing workshops, recording sessions and student-led planning sessions for Gig Night 2020. We are excited to announce that Gig Night 2020 is to be held at the Soundlounge on Saturday 21 November. The Soundlounge has seen countless national and international touring artists perform on its stage, and this year, we will see our songbirds from PBC up there in the spotlight. Students are working towards putting on an outstanding show of original material and collaborative performances in this highly-esteemed, professional space. Tickets go on sale Thursday 13 August at 9:00am and can be purchased from https://soundlounge.com.au.
Visual Arts Excellence
During learning from home the Year 8 Art Excellence class started learning about the Surrealist art movement of the 1940s. Students researched artists Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Joel Rea a past PBC student who is a contemporary artist who is influenced by Surrealism. Students were then asked to plan their own surreal artwork that they were to paint on canvas once returning to school. Students have two more weeks to complete their Surreal canvases which will be part of the Art Excellence showcase in Term Four. Miss Hall is thrilled with the students commitment and the standard of their paintings.
Year 9 Art Excellence students finalised last term with an homage to an artist/art movement. Considering that students started the unit at home, it was overall, a fantastic success and an absolute testament to their dedication to the visual arts! Everyone hit the ground running when they returned to school, completing their artworks in record time. The results were amazing! Currently, students are working very intensely on a pop art sculpture of oversized food. The stipulation for this work is that it must be completed by recycling and repurposing found materials. Visual Arts Excellence teacher Ms Kent is very much looking forward to the results as they should be quite spectacular.
QATSIF Award Winner – Myrisha Bartman
A judging panel of over 10 Creative Arts judges including professional indigenous artists, university and TAFE representatives recently recognised the talent of Dance Excellence student Myrisha and was awarded first place in Dance.
Myrisha choreographed a moving piece of contemporary dance called “In this together” about Reconciliation. We are very proud of Myrisha for representing our school at a State level and for the winning such a fantastic and prestigious award.
The Dark Road – Year 11 and 12 Drama Excellence
The Senior PBC Drama Excellence students have been busy preparing themselves for the debut of a new international work by playwright Laura Lundgren Smith.
'Dark Road', charts the journey of two sisters caught in the ideological battlefield of Nazi Germany. The play moves through time, exploring the crumbling remains of relationships and the power of persuasive ideologies on individuals. The senior students are exceptionally excited to be presenting this work to you and have been making the most of our recently renovated performance studios. The studios along with many of our creative arts spaces, have undergone renovations during the school holidays. New flooring, curtains, lighting and panting has occurred to elevate the space as a dedicated studio for performing arts students.
'Dark Road', will be presented for the community and the Gold Coast Drama festival on 28 of August, in the school theatre. You are all invited to join us for this intimate exploration of ideologies, nationalism, and the destructive seduction of absolute power.
This term we as a school will provide the opportunity for Year 8s, Year 9s and Year 10s to select elective subjects to study in 2021. In HPE we are excited to offer a range of subjects to cater for a range of students. The last newsletter included a graphic outlining the Year 11 subject offerings for students currently in Year 10.
For students currently in Year 8, HPE has two elective subjects they can choose. It is important to note that all students complete a semester of HPE in Year 9, and that the two electives are significantly different from the compulsory HPE. The elective subjects are outlined below:
Health and Wellbeing:
This subject aims to develop a thriving individual. The concept of thriving is about personal development processes to become a healthier and stronger person. This health and strength is explored through a range of domains including physical, mental, emotional and social. To thrive, we need to be self-aware and knowledgeable of a range of sustainable strategies. The subject contains two units across the year –
Unit 1: Focusing inwards.
Topic 1: A thriving body – in this topic we will explore a range of strategies to influence the health and wellbeing of our physical selves. These strategies will include nutrition, sleep, range of movement (through Yoga and flow practice) and breathwork.
Topic 2: A thriving mind – in this topic we will explore a range of strategies to influence the health and wellbeing of our mental and emotional selves. These strategies will build on concepts covered in the CARE program and include mindfulness, affirmation, growth mindset, goal setting, journaling, kindness and meditation.
Unit 2: Focusing outwards.
Topic 1: Thriving relationships – in this topic we will explore a range of influences on the health and wellbeing of our social selves. Concepts will include personal values, communication, empathy and respect.
Topic 2: Thriving through challenge – in this topic we will experience a range of challenge activities that incorporate the strategies we will have learned throughout the course. One potential activity is a school camp experience.
It is important to note that this subject does not incorporate any sports, games or physical fitness.
Extension Physical Education:
This subject aims to develop an intelligent sportsperson. This is achieved through the study of scientific processes and concepts that can be manipulated to improve personal sport performance.
You need to have achieved either an “A” or “B” overall in Year 8 HPE to enrol in this subject. This subject will extend your knowledge and capacity to influence your own performance across a number of sports. Each unit will assess knowledge in, through and about physical performance.

HOD HPE
The PBC Track and Field was a great success with overall House points the closest they have been in years! A picture perfect Gold Coast winter’s day was the perfect backdrop for some record breaking performances and record participation across events. Students and teachers alike dressed proudly in their House colours, flooded the oval in a sea of colour. The 3000m, 1500m, Hurdles, Javelin, Triple jump and Shot put were held early, with Will Mann (14 years boys) breaking the long standing triple jump record with a jump of 12.82m and Taira Price-Williams took out the senior girls javelin with a throw of 24.45m. Following the select pre-carnival events, the Athenians took a one point lead over the Phoenicians into the major carnival on Friday.
Along with many stand out individual performances, it was great to see the House age groups encouraging each other. Open Athenian girls were a highlight, leading the way in participation and points. Phoenicians 13 years girls and Spartans 16 years boys were also clear leaders in their age groups.
Students and Staff also had fun on the inflatables and rides throughout the day. The mechanical bull and climbing wall tested students balance and strength and Bubble soccer’s always a favourite. These extra activities allowed students to keep busy and spend time with friends in between representing their Houses in events.
The 100m finals were a genuine highlight of the day, an amazing display of speed across the age groups. This year we also ran the inaugural PBC Gift. The handicapped race saw the fastest male and female from each age group compete in a 100m staggered start sprint. This truly was an amazing display from our sprinters, with under 12’s all the way through to opens competing in the event. A huge congratulations to all students who made it through to the Gift.
PBC Gift Females:
- Thewbelle Philp (U12)
- Evie Clarkson (U13)
- Olivia Hooper (U14)
- Lily McClure (U15)
- Ashlei Jones (U16)
PBC Gift Males:
- Fenner Lee (U12)
- Samuel Longobardi (U13)
- Will Mann (U14)
- Vincent Whatmough (U15)
- Levi Clarke (U16)
- Kyle Davis (Opens)
Olivia Hooper took a commanding lead early in the Gift and held on to win the female race. While the boys race ended in a photo finish with Vincent Whatmough pipped at the post by Sam Longobardi. The 2020 PBC Gift was a great spectacle and will no doubt be an event to look forward to each year. It was also great to see the Hurdles added to the 2020 schedule, with this specialist event set to grow in the future.
It takes talent, skill, athleticism and versatility to become Age Champion at a Track and Field carnival. Congratulations to all of our Age Champions who competed fiercely over the week of events.
2020 Age Champions:
- LilleyTeanor (12 Girls)
- Reave Gehling (12 Boys)
- Kaylee Booth (13 Girls)
- Zachariah Iliuk (13 Boys)
- Charlotte Hart (14 Girls)
- Hudson Kerr (14 Boys)
- Eva Pietraszkiewicz (15 Girls)
- Isaac Dixon (15 Boys)
- Ashlei Jones (16 Girls)
- Taiquin Hayes (16 boys)
- Savannah Sproule (Open Girls)
- Kai Meath (Open Boys)
Overall, the event was a great success and we are so glad that students had this opportunity, in such an unsettled year. Many thanks to all PBC staff who helped plan, set up, run and supervise the day. Congratulations to all of the students who attended and participated, you did your school and House proud. A huge congratulations to this year’s Champion House – The Athenians!!!
Overall Points:
- 1st Athenians - 1768 points
- 2nd Phoenicians – 1692 points

Dental Health Week
How much sugar is hiding in your trolley?
Being healthy is something that most of us aim for.
Sugar is everywhere in supermarket staples, even some that might appear to be healthy on the surface, and so this Dental Health Week (3 - 9 August dentalhealthweek.com.au), we want you to become more “sugar savvy”. Figures show that the average Australian is consuming 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the maximum six teaspoons a day recommended by the World Health Organisation. Beyond that, we want to show how easy it is to keep your teeth and gums healthy by following a few simple tips: Brushing, Flossing, eat and drink well and say ‘Hello!’ to your dentist.
