Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
2018 draws to a close for the students and teachers on Friday. I would like to thank you for your support in 2018 in both acknowledging what we did well and letting us know where we could improve. It has been a successful year for the whole school in terms of academic, sport, cultural and community service achievement. Our results as a school continue to be first class and the individual students who make up the school have improved their attendance and levels of engagement with a wider variety of school activities.
Construction work at the school will continue over the holiday period with major external renovations to the Sports Hall and internal renovations to E Block. The new Library Precinct demolition work is complete and the groundwork ready for the new building to commence construction. The playing fields are being rested from use over the holidays and we will be undertaking some minor upgrades to the playing surfaces. Work conducted by the GCCC on Thrower Drive will also continue as a new wide footpath is installed and the road widened. It is anticipated that this work will be completed prior to school starting next year.
At this stage 2488 students will recommence school on Tuesday 29 January. Have a great holiday break and I look forward to working with you in 2019.
Regards,
Chris Capra

Senior School Update
2019 School Captains Leadership Summit.
Last week Year 12 Dean of Students, Cathy Clipson and the 2019 student leaders attended a leadership camp at the Gold Coast Sports Super Centre. The camp commenced with a kayak challenge in windy conditions against the tide on the Broadwater. All our students worked together to support each other. Matt Mihelcic even dived off the kayak (which was a bit of a shock as his co-paddler!) to retrieve a lost paddle for another student.
Students then identified themselves as an animal – kangaroo, eagle, wombat or dolphin based on their character strengths. It was interesting to see the balance of ‘animal’ types in our student leadership team. Students worked together in animal groups and combined groups to solve a variety of fun challenges and learnt about strengths in a team and how to make the best use of them.
The first afternoon was spent planning a primary school sporting event based on indigenous games and developing an impact plan for 2019. After dinner the excellent and engaging speaker, Hogan Rogers, talked about leadership not just being a badge and got the students moving with heaps of fun trust and team-building activities. We finished the evening off playing beach volleyball until they turned the lights off!
Day 2 – the students spent the morning implementing leadership in action through their delivery of games to local Year 5 students. They engaged, instructed and managed the students so that they had fun whilst learning about indigenous games and burning off loads of end of term energy! The leaders were able to reflect on their performance and continue to develop their team work skills. After another delicious athletes meal Clinton Curran the Principal of RBSLEC presented an engaging session on leadership – ‘it’s not about me, it’s about we’ and leading others. He shared the All Black’s cultural framework and a thought-provoking video of Jonathon Thurston picking up litter in the team changing room when he was injured and unable to play – demonstrating that he was still a team player, just in a different way. Clint also got the students and staff to reflect on their ‘why’ of being a leader.
Chanel Gomes, QLD Fusion and former Australian netball player, followed Clint. Chanel spoke about overcoming adversity (she had a hip replacement at a very young age), personal excellence, resilience and grit. She is the first person in the world to play sport at an elite level following a hip replacement; a truly amazing woman.
The day concluded with a Q&A with former student leaders. The emerging leaders had plenty of questions and all learnt something from this informative session.
The students have clearly bonded well as the last day approached. Wednesday morning started with some final planning time and then Hot Tomato radio personality Moyra Major came to talk about public speaking and interview etiquette. Moyra’s top tips were: plant your feet firmly on the ground, keep your hands in front or behind, look at people’s foreheads when making ‘eye’ contact (less confronting than looking directly in the eyes!!), take care when ‘scanning’ the room – it can make you look like you have no connection which is the opposite to the effect you are trying to achieve. The students got some top tips on their presentations to their schools’ Principals which they put into action in the afternoon.
PBC’s students presented an ambitious ‘Reds Celebration Fair’ that was well received by all – watch this space for an exciting event planned for next year.
The 3-day summit was an amazing experience for the students. Here are some of the students’ comments at the end of the summit.
‘The leadership summit was a great experience for us to all connect and learn more about each other and what we can achieve together in 2019’. – Regan
‘I enjoyed the leadership camp because it gave me the opportunity to build a stronger connection with my peers and learn their strengths and weaknesses so that we could work better together’. Matt
‘The camp has brought us together as a council and the highlight would have been working with young Year 5 kids and teaching them an indigenous game’. Toby
‘This has truly been a reviving and great experience for all of us as it has connected us as a team and brought us closer and brought out our strengths and worked on our weaknesses thus being able to make better decisions and work as a whole!’ Zali
‘I enjoyed the camp and meeting new people, and will use the skills in everyday life. Great food!’ Josh
Release of Year 12 Results
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will release student QCEs, OPs and Senior Statements through student learning accounts on the Student Connect website from the link below; from 9:00am on Saturday 15 December 2018.
https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/
Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Students have been emailed and reminded on many occasions to log into this portal to check their account details but many have chosen not to do so.
Senior Education profiles will then be mailed out by the QCAA from Monday 17 December.
OP ineligible students wishing to know their Rank need to contact the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC )directly on 1300 GO QTAC (1300 467 822) or via the link below; as these are not automatically sent out to students.

Year 11 OP Students
Students’ predicted OPs will be emailed out in the second week of December.
Students who are predicted to get an OP of 15 or higher will most likely not receive a university offer in 2018. These students need to consider whether their pathway is appropriate and discuss their options with Mr McDougall or Mr Kennedy. Options can include undertaking a Diploma or Certificate III pathway in Year 12 which will give them a rank equivalent of an OP of 9 and 15 respectively.

Middle School Update
Congratulations to the Middle School students on their many successes during 2018.
Throughout the year, Middle School students have excelled in a range of pursuits from academic achievements, excellent results in NAPLAN, debating, public speaking, Philosothon where our student’s philosothised their way to the national final, many successful Eisteddfod’s and Creative Arts performances including our own school musical, GREASE.
We celebrate student success throughout the year on our Optima Assemblies each term. 2018 has been a very positive year for Middle School students, who have exceeded all expectations in terms of effort and behaviour, academic success and attendance.
Students have received a total of 1097 Blue Optima Awards for outstanding effort and behaviour, a total of 189 Blue Academic Optima Awards (5 A’s Academic achievement) and 128 Gold Academic Optima Awards (6 A’s achievement and 6 excellent for effort and behaviour). One of the most rewarding certificates students can receive is the Academic - Most Improved, with recipients demonstrating a strong commitment to learning and a tenacity to improve. Well done to all of the 89 students who received this commendation.
Within our Middle School we celebrated 58 students who have contributed significantly enough to our wider community to achieve Community Service Awards. Creative Arts students have excelled with a grand total of 334 Cultural awards.
Middle school students have also outclassed their rivals in sport and have proudly worn their ‘reds’ in Inter-school Sport, as South Coast Representatives, as Oceanic Reps, as Queensland and Australian Champions.
Above all of these achievements and in every pursuit our Middle School students embody the PBC school mission, Nil Sed Optima, Nothing but the Best with their ideas, innovations, engagement and commitment.
Across the curriculum students, are developing and shaping ideas that will make a positive and lasting impact on the world, individually and collectively. So, thank you to all of our outstanding students, their teacher mentors and dedicated parents and caregivers who have guided and supported them throughout 2018.
Farewell to our Year 9 cohort who are transitioning to the Senior Phase of Learning very best wishes for continued success!
The final week of school will see Middle School students participate in an alternative program week. Students will work on curriculum related activities within their CARE classes. Absences will be tracked as normal with rolls marked each day. Students should continue to wear full school uniform, bring a hat and water bottle and should bring lunch as although the canteen will be open it will have reduced stock being the last week. The canteen is closed on Wednesday 12 December until 9:00am and all day on Friday 14 December.
This year has been an extremely rewarding year personally and professionally as the permanent Middle School Deputy Principal. I have had the privilege to collaboratively liaise with students, parents/caregivers, staff and external agencies to embed ‘Nil Sed Optima’ on a daily basis.
I would like to congratulate our Middle School students for:
- Positively embracing the school identity by proudly wearing the PBC uniform on a daily basis
- Engaging in House activities throughout the year – a highlight as DP was witnessing house spirit during the ANZAC Day biscuit baking and the fiercely competitive ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ competition
- Active volunteering with Leos and Surf Life Saving by contributing ‘service’ to our wider community
- Rocking the Year 9 inaugural ‘Dance’ moves and setting the platform for future dances
- Embracing Stymie and notifying the Optima team of many wellbeing concerns that were all followed up
- Our students being their best self and being a RED!
A special thank you to our Optima team:
- Dean of Students Ms Cardinal Year 7 and 8 and Mr Bullpit Year 9 for the many Restorative programs to support student being reflective and setting aspirations for future positive behaviours
- Year Coordinators Mr Jesser Year 7, Ms Condon Year 8, Mr Williams Year 9 and acting Year Coordinators Ms Whitehouse and Mr Brown for your continued diligence in supporting school attendance, uniform compliance and positive behaviours
- Wellbeing team led by Ms Willis, Ms Wilson SBYHN, Mr Catterall ‘Chappy’ and our YODA team
Congratulations to:
- Parent/caregivers involved in your child’s learning and for the attending our Parent/Teacher/Student interview and Term Optima Assemblies
- Teaching staff and teacher aides in the classroom for your professional commitment to all students to achieve their potential across all subjects
- Students receiving 1200 Middle School Optima Awards in 2018
Have a safe and enjoyable festive season and I look forward to 2019!
Transition Day 2017
Monday 10 December will see PBC welcome nearly 400 enrolled students to the PBC Community. Transition Day is designed to support the 2019 Year 7s as they move from their primary schools to secondary school. Last year, we had students enrol from close to 40 different primary schools, each with its own school culture and expectations. On Transition Day, we welcome students, assign them to their classes and have them experience some lessons with next year’s teachers and introduce them to their Houses. The Middle School Head Prefects and a large team of teachers and support staff are part of this day.
Transition Day also welcomes parents to the PBC family. A Parent Meeting and morning tea will present ideas for supporting young students through the change to high school, and introduce key staff who can assist in the process.
Term 4 Reports
Term 4 reports will be emailed or posted home on Friday 14 December. This is a full report with detailed comments. Please be sure to share the report with your child, so that they can receive important feedback on their work this year and set goals for 2019.
2019 Core Classes
The 2019 timetable has been constructed to provide maximum opportunities for students across PBC to study courses of choice, in our large and diverse school. We are also at maximum enrolments. For these reasons, there is less flexibility for students to swap core classes.
Coping with changes such as these are important for building resilience – a significant quality for success in life. Parents should be aware that their child will be with a very different group of students next year, and prepare to support them through this change. While there is no opportunity to swap classes due to friendships, the usual range of support will be available to all students and their parents to help them through this change.
Seasons Greetings
In this, the last newsletter of the year, I would like to wish all readers and the Middle School students a safe happy Christmas holiday. It continues to be an honour and a delight for me to work this fabulous, energetic and positive group of students.

SEA FM - Heather, Dan & Ben are Out & About
Sea FM’s Heather, Dan & Ben will be broadcasting from the front of the PBC Administration building from 6:00-9:00am on Wednesday 12 December. This is a great opportunity to promote the Container Deposit Scheme at PBC as well as other school and community initiatives and student achievements.
It will be great to have radio announcer and former PBC student/NRL player Ben Hannant here to reflect on his time at PBC and the wonderful things happening here now. The on-air team will be interviewing a number of staff and students about a range of things (sport, the arts, etc.) but the primary reason for asking them here is to promote the success of PBC’s Container Deposit Scheme.
Students, family, friends, community members and local businesses are encouraged to participate by bringing in an orange bag of eligible containers between 6:00-9:00am to the staff carpark next to the Admin block and stick around to enjoy the Sea FM morning broadcast. All funds from the bottle collection will go towards student driven sustainability projects in the future. Replacement orange Envirobags can be collected on the day but remember that containers can be dropped off in any bag or box.
Let’s make our famous orange pyramid the biggest yet and provide some awesome photos for the Sea FM and school marketing department that showcases our community spirit, school pride and environmental awareness.
Carols @ PBC ~ A Reds Christmas
PBC Arts students and staff would like to invite you and your family to Carols @ PBC ~ A Reds Christmas! It will be a fun way to finish 2018 with performances, special guest appearances and a chance to sing some of your favourite Christmas Carols. To be held on Tuesday 11 December from 6:00pm, undercover in the PBC Main Quad. Bring your own chairs, blankets, pillows, food and drinks. There will also be food and drinks available to purchase. We will be accepting food and gift donations for Stuff the Bus Charity to help those less fortunate have a happy Christmas in 2018. All donations should be placed under the Christmas Tree. We look forward to seeing you all there!
There will be blue container refund bins located around the Senior Quad during Carols @ PBC for guests to donate their eligible containers as an additional method of contributing to the container collection being showcased the following morning as part of the Sea FM broadcast. Guests will have the opportunity to collect a free orange Envirobag from the front of the stage throughout the evening. Further information about eligible containers and future projects can be found in the official Carols @ PBC program that will be distributed on the night.
ABW Program
Academic Excellence Year 9 Australian Business Week culminated on Friday with the Awards Dinner. Student business teams, parents, teacher mentors and sponsors were invited to watch a video recap of the highs and lows of the week (created by Sharon Atkinson and her amazing media students) and celebrate with winning business teams for the Trade Display, Oral Report to shareholders, Video Advertisement, highest Share Price, Team work and Overall Winner.
All week the competition was fierce, elusive 1st places highly valued and celebrated. Awards were announced by entertaining MC Paul Burckhardt and bestowed by our sponsors McDonald's and the Greater Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce.
All teams deserved to win; they worked so hard, did many things outside their comfort zone, supported each other, worked as a team and had one of the best weeks of their school life.
CARE Carnival 2018
This year saw PBC have their first ever Care Carnival. The day proved to have a real carnival atmosphere with care classes coming up with different ideas for their stalls, where students could pay a small fee to either buy items such as cakes, ice creams, snow cones etc, or have a go at different activities on offer in an attempt to win a prize. There were plenty of other activities to keep the students occupied from putt putt golf, a mechanical surfboard, inflatable hungry hippo and the very popular dunk tank where students got the opportunity to dunk their favourite teachers! PBC also showcased their talented students who were on stage singing and performing to the crowds watching. The day was a result of weeks of planning from the students to celebrate another successful year and raise money for PBC’s school charity. Congratulations to all the students and staff that made the day a huge success!
Year 9 Celebration Dance
The positive energy of our Year 9 cohort was expressed on the dance floor of Currumbin RSL's Waterside Room at the inaugural Year 9 Celebration Evening held recently. This event, organised by the Middle School Head Prefects with the support of the P and C and the generosity of the RSL, allowed students to come together to mark their transition from the Middle School, and milestone of Senior Schooling. All of the staff who attended were both impressed and proud of the calibre these young people displayed through the evening. Their sense of connection to each other and to PBC was most evident, and will serve them well as they manage the challenges of the years ahead. We wish you well, Year 9.

Gold Coast high school’s 2020 Ready project gains momentum
A contract has been awarded and construction has begun on a $12.43 million multi-storey learning centre at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School.
Minister for Education Grace Grace said contractor Broad Construction Services had already started work on the three-level 2020 Ready facility, which is forecast to be completed in August 2019.
“This is a really exciting project for Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School with the doors to the centre to open for the start of the 2020 school year,” Ms Grace said.
“It's great news for the local economy, with construction supporting up to 36 jobs.
“Level one of the centre will include a library, design and audio-visual studios, project room and conference room, Head of Department offices, and a staff work area complete with kitchenette.
“The upper level will boast six general learning areas, three group learning spaces, a kitchen, storeroom and amenities.
“Importantly, the under-croft will be fitted with amenities and will be future-proofed for a further eight general learning areas when they are needed down the track.”
Ms Grace said the Palaszczuk Government’s 2020 Ready initiative was supporting more than 60 high schools across the state.
“The 2020 Ready program is delivering additional classrooms we need to manage the increased student population in our high schools that resulted from the introduction of Prep in 2007,” Ms Grace said.
“With the original half-cohort of Prep students set to graduate from high school at the end of 2019, we will have — for the very first time in 2020 — six full year levels of students in Queensland secondary schools.
“I’d also like to thank the Palm Beach-Currumbin P&C Association for their generous contribution of $996,000 for extra enhancements to the building.”
Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School Principal Christopher Capra said the new building would be an important asset to the school’s future.
“The centre will provide a variety of larger, and more flexible, learning and innovation centres to benefit all year levels,” Mr Capra said.
“The centre’s modern facilities and wireless connectivity will not only cater for our school’s predicted increase in enrolments, but also progress our curriculum into the digital age.”
Mr Capra said the new building would also benefit the wider school community, with some of the flexible learning spaces able to transform into a large function room.
