Principal's Report

Dear Parents,

Our school culture is driven by our motto "Nil Sed Optima" (Nothing but the Best) which compels all students and staff to do their best in all school endeavours.

There are many programs, routines and events that we implement that sustain this culture by inspiring and mentoring students and recognising collective and individual achievement.

Over the first half of this term we will hold the optima awards assemblies for each year level. The purpose of these events is to acknowledge personal achievement at many levels.

  • Awards are presented for:
  • Academic achievement
  • Excellence in behaviour and effort
  • Sporting and cultural achievements
  • Commitment to community service

At the assembly students are reminded that not everyone can be the best but that everyone can do their best and for this reason the behaviour and effort rewards are celebrated above all other rewards.

Following the ceremony a parent morning tea is held and senior administrators, including myself, will be present to discuss the school and its future directions.

Parents and grandparents of recipients are invited and enthusiastically encouraged to attend. I understand that older students often are very skilled in distancing parents from their education, however, I'm absolutely convinced that acknowledgement of achievement has an important role to play in inspiring young people to strive for success and I look forward to chatting to you then.

Senior School Update

It is with great pleasure that I welcome everybody back to Term 2 following a well-deserved Easter break for our senior students and staff. Term 1 provided a great foundation for our students as they build their study skills and strategies and the positive relationships that will enable them to achieve success this year.

Term 1 Interim Reports

Please beware that your child's Term 1 Interim Report will be emailed to parents from the end of Week 2 of this term.

These reports are a vital piece of feedback for our senior students and their parents/guardians on their progress at this stage of the year. It is imperative that time is spent reviewing these reports and discussion between parent and child occurs to assist in the setting of goals for the coming term.

Parent/Teacher/Student interviews

Please also be aware that Parent/Teacher/Student interviews will be held in Week 6 to discuss progress. These meetings are an essential communication point that allows all parties involved to build a clear understanding of what it will take for each student to achieve their best outcome. Appointments will open on Friday when reports are sent.

Please see dates and times below:

  • Tuesday 17 May 2016: 3:30pm-8pm
  • Wednesday 18 May 2016: 3pm-7:30pm
  • Thursday 19 May 2016: 3:30pm-8pm

Term 2 OPTIMA Awards Ceremonies

In the week commencing Monday 9 May the Senior School Term 2 OPTIMA Award Ceremonies will take place. These ceremonies represent an important opportunity for the Senior School to celebrate the achievements of our most deserving students. Please be aware if your son/daughter is receiving an award you will receive an invitation to attend the Term 2 Award Ceremony.

QCS Masterclass

On Friday 15 April Year 12 QCS students participated in a masterclass with Mighty Minds and completed their second short response practice test. Other students had the opportunity to complete the following courses: White card, Responsible Service of Alcohol, Microsoft and BRAKE certification.

Interim Reports

Interim reports will be finalised this week and emailed to parents. All results in the Senior School will be analysed to ensure that students are on the appropriate Senior Schooling pathway.

QCE Eligibility

Students in Year 11 and 12 need to be passing at least five of their six subjects to ensure that they remain eligible for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Students whose results indicate that they are not actively engaged in the learning process at school will have an intervention and be monitored by the Senior School administration team. Students who continue to be "at risk" will have their enrolment status at the school reviewed.

OP Predictions

Year 12 OP predictions will be completed during Week 3. Students will then have a scheduled OP estimation interview with a Senior School staff member. Year 11 students will receive their first OP prediction when more results are finalised after Semester 1. Students who receive a predicted OP higher than 15 may need to consider alternative pathways to tertiary studies.

Alternative pathways include moving to Selection Rank, or completing a Certificate III course whilst at school. These pathways are generally a better option for students with OPs above 15 as they will give students an option to attend University in 2016.

Subject Changes

Subject changes in the Senior School are currently being finalised. These changes are subject to availability and take place only after the signature and permission of relevant Heads of Department and Parents. Once these changes have been processed students can collect their new timetables in Y block.

Dean of Students Report

Welcome back to all, it has been wonderful this week to see our senior students energetic and refreshed from a deserved break as they head into Term 2.

It is important with the start of each new term to remind parents and students of some aspects of our uniform policy. As we head into the cooler months, compliance with available PBC outerwear is important to maintain standards of dress both within our school and the local community. The blue knit jumper with or the new PBC jacket with school logos are the only approved jumpers for students within the senior school. These are available from the Uniform Shop. The only exception to this is the Year 12 senior jersey, which is due to arrive for distribution within the coming weeks.

In terms of jewellery for all students, only a wrist watch and one small earing in each ear is permitted. Excess rings, necklaces and nose studs/rings will all be required to be removed whilst at school. For further information on our Uniform Code, please refer to page 3 of the Student Planner.

Thank you to all for your efforts thus far this year, students within the Senior School are continuing to set high expectations across all areas of their schooling. We look forward to an outstanding Term 2.

Mitch Kennedy – Dean of Students Year 11 and 12

Middle School Update

Welcome back for Term 2, I hope both parents and students are feeling refreshed after the Easter break.

Attendance

Getting back into our routines is very important. At the moment, the most vital of these routines is attendance. Supporting regularity of attendance each day and every lesson is the most important thing you can do to help your child with their schooling.

Reporting

Reports will be out soon for last term's work, this is a key time to reflect with your child on the efforts that they are putting in at school each day and on their 'at home' tasks and assignment work. Questions to ask them, as a good place to start are:

  • Do they think they are putting in their best each lesson and all lesson?
  • What is getting in the way of them doing their best?

Supporting your child with their reading log, their weekly spelling list and their regular maths homework are routines that you can help build into the week around their family and extra-curricular commitments.

Parent Interviews

Parent interviews are on in Week 6 and I would encourage you to meet with your child's teachers to work together to get the best outcomes for them.

Along with reflecting on the term past, it's also the time to set some goals for this term and what actions will be needed to achieve them. I ask our teachers and our students to challenge themselves in this goal setting as it's from discomfort and pushing ourselves a bit that great growth will come.

NAPLAN

In Week 5 our Year 7 and 9 students will be sitting NAPLAN exams. These exam results are used by our English and Maths teachers to tailor programs to continue to build on the literacy and numeracy skills as the students move on to the next year level. At PBC we value these tests as research has shown that they are the best indicator of future academic success and of university entrance exam scores. We are encouraging students to follow our motto of doing their best when it comes to these exams. Our staff and those at the primary schools have been working on building the skills needed for these exams for years but there are little things that can be done in these last few weeks.

Exams are one of those times in life where we have to prepare for our best performance, a bit like a job interview, a grand final, or, as I found this week, delivering a eulogy for a loved one. Yes there is stress in these moments and it's important to talk to your child and share how you manage yourself in a situation where you have to bring your best performance. Other factors that will help, that as a parent you can support them with, will be getting enough sleep, eating healthily, doing some physical activity and not over scheduling them in the lead up.

If your child has a recognised anxiety disorder which could be triggered by this type of event please talk to HOD Middle School about whether withdrawal from the exams may be appropriate. You may also contact me at the school if you have further questions please.

I will also be putting some tips regularly on our school Facebook page over the next few weeks so be sure to like the page and follow:

ANZAC Day Ceremony at PBC

The commemoration of ANZAC Day is one of only two occasions during the school year when our entire school community comes together. All students will attend our PBC ANZAC Day Service at 9.20am on Friday, 22 April, in the Senior Quad. Parents are welcome to attend.

Middle School students who wish to represent PBC in the march to the Currumbin RSL Morning Service on Monday, 25 April must first register their intent at the Middle School Office. Students are required to wear full formal school uniform, with school hats and water-bottles strongly advised. Students who attend the march are not required to stay for the Service. Marching will assemble at Winders Park at 10.40am for a 10.55am step off, the service commences at 11.15am.

Students who represent the school at the Currumbin RSL Morning Service may register the time towards their Community Service record.

Assessment Calendar

The Middle School Term 2 Assessment Calendars have been published on the PBC website . Students have been asked in assemblies to look up their year level's calendar and copy the pertinent information into their diaries. Remember, having this information displayed in a public space at home can also help the whole family consider how best to support students.

NAPLAN 2016 is coming!

NAPLAN is always an exciting time for students in Years 7 and 9. Students have made a great deal of effort to fine-tune their literacy and numeracy skills, and this is a chance to challenge themselves and show themselves they can do.

This year, the tests fall on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, with a 'catch-up' day for absent students on Friday 13 May.

How to prepare

Students have been well prepared at school in literacy and numeracy. There is no 'study' required. At home, students can ensure they are best prepared for the rigours of the tests by:

  • Being prepared – punctual, and with the correct equipment
  • Sleep well the night before
  • Eat well on NAPLAN mornings – including some protein and carbs to think clearly
  • Hydrate – but not too much!

What to bring

Students will reduce their stress levels if they have the equipment they need. Please check that your child brings:

  • Several 2B or HB pencils
  • Blue or black pens (Tuesday only)
  • Eraser
  • Sharpener
  • Calculator (Thursday only)

This is the only permissible equipment. Students must have a proper calculator - SMART watches and mobile phones are not permitted in the test rooms.

Be on time!

Tests begin at the start of Period 1 each day. Your support in having students arrive at school on time during NAPLAN is much appreciated.

Further information

If you require additional information regarding NAPLAN, please contact the Middle School Head of Department, Sharon Hillcoat on 5525 9333.

Students have reported thoroughly enjoying participating in these classes, learning new practical skills and developing problem solving ability. The Manual Arts classes have made a variety of wooden objects including a tackle box and jewellery box, along with a perspex mobile phone holder and a mini-skateboard.

Zoe Williamson has taken the role of Acting Dean of Students for Year 9 and 10, and we welcome Lorna Wotherspoon to PBC who is replacing Zoe during this time. Lorna is presently teaching Year 7 Maths, English and SOSE. We also welcome back Rachel Wise from maternity leave. Rachel, along with Kylee Gelkov, is case managing our Year 9 students, and teaching in a variety of curriculum areas across Middle and Senior Schools.

Year 12 Canoe Excursion

In Term 1 our Year 12 students enrolled in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Studies. They had the opportunity to learn and practice simple canoeing skills at Tallebudgera Beach Outdoor School. This was a perfect sunny day filled with teambuilding activities, lessons on how to canoe, free swimming, smiles and a whole lot of laughter.

Year 10 ASDAN Program

On Wednesday March 9, Year 10 Students visited Palm Beach Police Station as part of the ASDAN program. This excursion was focussed on community awareness. We were lucky to have David Sammons (School Based Police Officer) show us around the police station.

Students met several officers, they had an experience of wearing bullet proof vests and were taught how speed radars work. All the students had an informative learning experience and are more aware how police operate in our community.

Fellowship of the Green Thumb

The PBC Special Education Program is growing - literally. 2016 will see the construction of a market garden, otherwise known as "The Fellowship of the Green Thumb", designed to teach Special Education students how to grow and cook healthy food, methods of innovative use and recycling waste, along with basic business skills.

The fellowship aims to provide students with a range of skills such as planning the construction of garden beds, landscaping, soil preparation, composting and crop rotation. The program will also teach students about growing produce for market by working closely with the canteen and Home Economics faculty to provide herbs and vegetables needed for food preparation. The program has benefited from a donation from Rocky Point Mulch which has enabled us to commence construction of garden beds.

Early work, such as weeding, planting of seedlings and planning of garden beds, has seen great success. Students who otherwise fail to engage in a classroom environment have been enthusiastic participants, some even assuming leadership roles during working bees and has been a very rewarding experience for both students and staff.

Celebrating 'Commonwealth Day' – GC2018 Schools Connect Program

School Captains Rosie Gale and Harry Bartlett were lucky enough to spend the afternoon with local and state dignitaries this week, celebrating 'Commonwealth Day', held on 14 March each year.

PBC continued its relationship with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Committee after becoming a part of the 112-school community in 2015.

The students were given a unique opportunity to network with leading figures within the Commonwealth Games team, discussing the involvement and opportunities available our youth prior to this global event. Both our Captains represented the school with pride and maturity.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Games team as 2018 fast approaches.

Model United Nations Assembly

Year 12 student, Seraphina Smith, won the right to represent Rotary and Palm Beach Currumbin in Canberra for the national 'Model United Nations Assembly' (MUNA) in August this year.

Sponsored by Rotary e-club, Saturday 19 March was PBC's inaugural entry into the MUNA competition. Michelle Borg, Seraphina Smith and Joshua Wingett represented our school alongside 30 other teams from across the district at Tweed Heads Civic Centre. Seraphina was one of two students selected to represent our Rotary district in Canberra. Should our district win, they go on to represent Australia at MUNA International.

Every year, Rotary organises and hosts MUNA. Schools adopt a country, dress in their national costume, attend the flag ceremony and then debate the merit of a range of resolutions from that country's perspective, chaired by the Secretary General. Teams are expected to research the physical, political and cultural aspects of their country. They must consider the arguments for and against the resolution from other nations and dispute or support their claims.

This year, students debated the merits of:

  • Regulating international migration
  • Protecting of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism
  • Intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls

PBC were a stand out due to their ability to work as a team, respond to the statements made by other nations, and use of philosophy and reason to add weight to their arguments.

Year 11 Semi-Formal

The 2016 Year 11 Semi-formal was an evening to remember. Over 230 students and 10 teachers including the Executive Principal Mr Loggie, Head of Senior School Mr Hanna, Deputy of Senior School Ms Cleary and Senior Dean of students Mr Kennedy, enjoyed life beyond the school gates and ended Term 1 with an evening of socialising, dining and dancing.

Guest speakers Mr Aaron Zimmerle and Ms Bianca Wise espoused their words of wisdom on school, life after, success and overcoming failure. Their words were indeed inspiring. It was also a wonderful evening to showcase the talent within the Year 11 cohort. Laura Suttle wowed us with her amazing vocal timbre, and had the entire cohort mesmerised with "Let it Go", the duo of Kyra Cumming and Teagan Mills was also something to behold.

After much dancing, laughter and lots of photos, school was finally dismissed at 10:15pm and the holidays began. A huge thanks must be extended to Mr Peach (Year 12 Coordinator), and student helpers Emily Ireland and Corben Thorsby for their organisation skills. Overall it was an excellent evening where the students represented the school with pride and were exceptionally behaved on the evening. I am so looking forward to the coming term and seeing the current Year 11 cohort through this very busy year.

3 Quick Tips to Improve Confidence

Is a lack of confidence holding you back from the life you want to live?

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons such as anxiety, depression, work stress, relationship difficulties and substance issues just to name a few. However, in my clinical experience of working with a broad range of clients and their varied issues there is a consistent issue that crops up. Time after time it is reported that a lack of confidence holds people back from engaging with life in the way that they want to. The natural result of low confidence is inaction, holding back and living a smaller life.

When exploring confidence it is interesting to understand the history of the origin of the word confidence. 'Con' meaning with and 'fidence' coming from the Latin word fides, which is the root of the words fidelity and faith. So confidence literally means 'with fidelity' or 'with faith'; that is being true to oneself. When embarking on anything new or different or challenging it is normal for difficult feelings to arise. The urge to run away from these difficult feelings and to wait for feelings of confidence is a strong temptation however this is the antithesis of a confident action because the act of avoidance has no self-faith. The best thing to do is to feel the difficult feelings fully and engage in action. Mindfulness skills can help make the full experiencing of difficult feelings manageable. It is following the action of being true to oneself that ''confident'' feelings begin to emerge.

When addressing your confidence issues I encourage you to consider:

  1. Identifying what is really important to you, what really matters to you deep in your heart? Clearly articulate your values and give due consideration to how you want to spend your finite time here on earth.
  2. Reflect on things that you have already achieved. Consider things which at one time, before you attempted them filled you with difficult thoughts and feelings. For example your first day at high school or starting a new job.
  3. Have an awareness of your body language and how you communicate to others. Stand tall with your shoulders back, look people in the eyes and speak clearly. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy reveals in this TED talk how standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident can help

'Below Average' Comic Strip

About the Comic

High school. It's a daunting place, especially when you're at the bottom of the social ladder… where we find four friends trying to survive their final days of senior year. Join Marina, Maddison, Amy and Olivia as they embrace adolescence with a refreshing and humorous approach to daily life in this new addition to the Palm Beach Currumbin High School Newsletter.

Below Average is a fortnightly webcomic created by cartoonist Nicholas Cleaver in mid 2010. It follows the day-to-day adventures of four not-so average teenagers: Marina, an inventor suffering with obsessive-compulsive disorder; Maddison, a blissfully ignorant foodaholic; Amy, a sarky game fanatic; and Olivia, the kookiest member of the group.

The strip's primary theme is humour, and focuses largely on friendship, school and the four girls' incompatibility with established society.
