From the Executive Principal,
The last four weeks have been especially busy at our school. In Week 3 of the term we undertook our full school review where a team of five current and past Principals held approximately 200 interviews to provide quality feedback and next steps to inform our Strategic Plan 2025-28. Each Queensland school undertakes a review every four years. The review team recognised the commitment of our staff to ensuring high level education as well as the extensive range of opportunities within the school and through our wide range of community partners.
ANZAC Day was a very special time. The service at our school was extremely respectful with wonderful performances by our band and fabulously led by our student leaders and supported by our cadets. The dawn service at Currumbin was an honour to attend and represent our school. Our students, particularly school captains Emma Suttle and Zane With were outstanding and the choir performed beautifully.
Last week our Parent Teacher interviews connected many of you with your child’s teachers. This process should still be continuing now. Have you considered the following actions? It won’t be too long before the end of semester assessment is on us.
- Review and Reflect: Consider the feedback given about your child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and any concerns the teacher mentioned. Reflect on what was discussed and how it aligns with your own observations.
- Discuss with Your Child: Have a discussion with your child about the meeting. Share positive feedback and areas where they can improve in a supportive manner.
- Develop an Action Plan: Based on the discussion with the teacher, develop a plan with your child to address any issues or support your child’s strengths. This might include setting up a study schedule, seeking additional resources, or arranging for extra help if needed.
- Communicate with the Teacher: If there were specific concerns or actions suggested during the meeting, follow up with the teacher.
- Provide Support at Home: Ensure your child has a conducive environment for studying at home. This includes having a quiet space, necessary supplies, and a regular routine.
Best wishes,
Chris Kern

Assessment
Assessment calendars for term 2 have been published on the school website and shutdown calendars for Year 10 and 12 will be published on this page in the coming week ( https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment). Year 10 and 12 students have their next shutdown commencing in the last week of school this term.
Year 11 students have just completed their Unit 1 assessment. Their next assessment block is early in term 2. End of Unit 1 subject reports should be emailed home in the week commencing June 3.
Students are expected to pass at least 5 out of their 6 subjects to remain eligible for the QCE and to remain enrolled in post compulsory schooling. If students have been disengaged and not working appropriately they could find themselves in a position where they are ineligible for the QCE at the end of Unit 1. Please visit the following link for more information on the requirements for the QCE:
https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/your-qce-pathway/about-the-qce
Year 11 students will have the opportunity to change classes at the end of Unit 1. They are available from now until Monday June 10.
Year 12 students are now completing Unit 4 work and will only have 2 assessments left in each of their subjects. At the end of Year 12 students’ results in Unit 3 and 4 are combined to award an exit grade and for General subjects a numerical value. As such it is imperative that student do not rest on their laurels and remain focussed for the rest of 2024.
Other senior schooling news:
- All Year 11 and 12 students should by now have registered for the QCAA student portal on the myQCE website ( https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/your-qce-pathway/student-portal-and-learning-account ). They also should have completed the Academic Integrity Course in the Online Learning section. This will become a pre-requisite of the QCE. Students are not sent certificates by the QCAA upon graduation from school and completion of the QCE, all results and certificates are now provided digitally within their student portal.
- Year 10s and 11s are again encouraged to register for School based traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) in Y block. A SAT will give students paid employment, work experience and a Certificate 3 qualification which gains extra QCE credits, but also opens up a tertiary pathway. Please contact Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information.
- Year 12 parents and students have been emailed a letter regarding the opportunity to complete a First Aid and Safety qualification in term 3. This course also attains 2 QCE points and is highly recommended for students that are at risk of failing a subject.
- Students in Year 10 are again reminded that their academic performance in Year 10 semester 1 will determine which pathway they can choose in Year 11. Students wishing to complete an ATAR pathway need to achieve Bs in English and Maths. Students wishing to study a senior science course in year 11 and 12 also need to achieve a B in Year 10 Science.

Music
ANZAC Day
Fourteen dedicated vocalists performed the New Zealand and Australian national anthems at this year’s Currumbin RSL Dawn ANZAC service. Students involved did an incredible job and represented themselves and our community to the highest standard on the national stage. We are extremely proud of Olivia, Willow, Saje, Mackenna, Saba, Valentina, Anjali, Isla, Anika, Amaya, Griffin, Elishka, Jaide and Maka. Well done to Cameron for his involvement in production.
Red’s Fest
Year 11 Music Excellence students planned an entertaining Red’s Fest earlier this term. The 3-day lunchtime event was filled with talented performances from students in our Music Ex program and enjoyed by lots of students. This annual event is a growing highlight on the PBC events calendar!! Congratulations Olive, Logan, Sonny and Griffin.
Flotsam Festival
Our CAX program is known for creating community connections and providing opportunities for our students to practice their skills in real-world events. Flotsam Festival is a surf culture film and photography festival that had an embedded Next Wave Youth Showcase earlier in the month. For 10 of our music ex students, this showcase provided a platform to develop a small set of music to a specific event brief (surf vibes). Student worked on developing their performance skills all term and demonstrated outstanding musicianship during the 5 hour event. Congratulations Mackenna, Noah, Audrey, Matt, Moss, Isla, Koen, Larn, Luke and Josh!!!
Year 10 – SAE Excursion
Last week Year 10 Music Excellence students had the opportunity to work with industry professionals at SAE Creative Institute Byron Bay. The students spent the day in the recording studio with head lecturer and produced a number of outstanding recordings of performances and original songs. It was a fun day with engaged learning and outstanding results!
Live on the Lawn
Junior Music Excellence played their first ‘Live on the Lawn’ gig at Pasture and Co where parents, friends and the wider community were able to enjoy their awesome performances. Well done to our performers for sharing their music with the wider local community and brightening our Friday afternoon with live music!
Instrumental Music
ANZAC Services
The week of Anzac Day was a very big week for the Instrumental Music Department with musicians involved in multiple Anzac Day services. Optima Wind Ensemble was responsible for the music for the whole school assembly and performed with great musicianship and sensitivity throughout the service. Year 11 Instrumental Music student Griffin Light-Law gave an incredible performance of ‘The Last Post’ at the school service and then again on Saturday at the John Flynn Hospital Anzac Service. Fellow IM students Anjali Johnston (Yr 10) and Willow Sutherland (Yr 8) were also at the John Flynn Service to sing the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems. Another IM trumpeter, Charles Mathews (Yr 9) was at Currumbin State School’s Anzac Assembly to perform ‘The Last Post’ (Charles also played ‘The Last Post’ for Kingscliff Public School’s Assembly the week before Anzac Day).
A very heartfelt thank you to all these musicians for your involvement in these services (including some very early morning starts for some), the music you performed was a very special part of each of these Services and commented on by many members of the community.
Synergy Band Camp
Last Friday and Saturday 60 awesome Synergy musicians had a two day camp at school returning home only to sleep on Friday night before returning on Saturday morning.
We began the camp with our normal Friday morning rehearsal at 7.30am followed by a three-hour workshop with the Head of Ensembles at the QLD Conservatorium of Music, Dr Peter Morris. This was an amazing experience for our musicians and an incredible opportunity to work with a conductor of Dr Morris’s calibre. Friday afternoon saw us take on Time Zone at Coolangatta before returning to school for dinner and the much anticipated “Synergy’s Got Talent” which showcased the amazing talent amongst the band...as well as some entrants who may have been ‘gonged off the stage’ by our 80s judges! Saturday saw us back at school for more rehearsing as well as some fun with some hotly contested Pickleball games on the quad.
A huge well done and thank you to all our Synergy musicians for a great camp. Dr Morris was very impressed with the level of playing and how engaged the students were. As staff members it was a real joy to spend the extra time with Synergy and we are looking forward to our performance at Fanfare in a few weeks!
