Creative Arts News

Currumbin State School Book Week

On Wednesday 24 August a group of Year 9 Dance Excellence students performed for the Prep students at Currumbin primary School for Book week. The students performed three routines based on their favourite childhood book “Oh the Places You’ll Go”, “The Kissing Hand” and “Under The Love Umbrella” The Prep students adored the dancers and their creative works,  and thoroughly enjoyed the Q and A session afterwards. Thankyou to Mia Zammit, Tia Retter, Mya Smith, Mae Lloyd, Sahari Zist, Sophie McKercher, Heather Wheatly and Milllie Elliott for their wonderful work and dedication  to the Dance excellence program this term.

Visual Arts

Last year we had the honour of having three PBC students’ work receive an Excellence Award with the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art, awards which promote and recognise excellence in senior visual art education throughout Queensland’s state and non-state schools. As a result, the works of Allie Baldwin, Gabriella Kilgariff and Ryan Thwaite have been hanging in Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art for the past four months. Hoping to ride the coattails of this fabulousness, our nominees this year are Sammi Franklin (Kampung), Rory Sillar (Aghori Sadhus), April Summers (The Turn Over) and Lydia Teague (Bel Motivo Rosa).  The process for selection following nomination is by winning a place in the regional exhibition and then winning a place in the annual exhibition. Last year there were over 500 nominations, so please keep your fingers crossed for Sammi, Rory, April and Lydia!

Instrumental Music – Eisteddfod 2022

Eisteddfod 1.jfif

This year saw the return of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod after a long two year break. This event brings together musical ensembles from across the Gold Coast and surrounding regions. This year was special because most ensembles were just happy to be returning to the stage, so what would normally be a competitive event was really a big celebration of music and sharing.

PBC Ensembles performed beautifully, living up the PBC code – Nil Sed Optima. The students looked spectacular in their band reds and were complimented on their outstanding musicianship and tone. The behaviour was wonderful and all involved had a great time. Well done Students!

  • Optima Wind Ensemble – First Place
  • Stage Band 1 – 2nd Place
  • Stage Band 2 – 2nd Place
  • Strings – Bronze Award

Dance Excellence

Bangarra.jpg

On Monday 8 August, Year 8 Dance Excellence and Year 11 and 12 Dance went on an excursion to see Terrain by Bangarra Dance Theatre. This was a particularly special experience as the award-winning show returned this year for a 10th Anniversary Tour of Australia. Choreographed by Frances Rings, Terrain is a breathtaking exploration of our largest salt lake. Students were inspired by the creative choreography and used this experience to link directly to the curriculum. Dancers also enjoyed walking around Southbank in Brisbane with their teachers and peers.
