Yr 11 Engineering

Earlier this term the Year 11 Engineering students went on an excursion to the Currumbin Creek M1 bridge constructions site. Vanessa and Caitlin from Seymour Whyte hosted the students for a indepth presentation about the M1 bridge construction processes and took the students on a tour of the construction site. Students found it super valuable and appreciated their efforts.

QuickSmart Pizza Party

Congratulations to our Year 7 students who have successfully completed the QuickSmart Numeracy and Literacy Intervention Program. We celebrated their success at our annual awards ceremony with pizza and ice-cream slice to honour our exceptionally talented students as they move into Year 8 with the fundamentals now firmly embedded. Well done QuickSmarters…we are so proud of you all!

Engineering Confidence’ Women & Girls Workshop

ACCIONA and Surfing Australia continued their great work through the ACCIONA ‘Engineering Confidence’ Women & Girls Workshop held in November at Palm Beach Currumbin State High. The event, hosted by Jessica Skarratt, was designed to not only build confidence in young women, but kickstart thoughts and discussions about real career opportunities in the construction engineering industry via STEM.

There were plenty of questions and enthusiastic discussion after the room heard from the breakfast's panel including World Tour Surfer and ACCIONA Ambassador Isabella Nichols, Surfing Australia Athlete and Tru Starling and Katelyn Hoad – Project Engineer from ACCIONA.

Isabella said: “The thing that excites me most about a career in STEM is having so many different opportunities, whether it's civil, mechanical or environmental. There are so many pathways you can take and even if you start on one pathway, you can crossover.”

After opening up to questions from students, the panel joined the group in a brain-stimulating hands-on spaghetti STEM challenge – where students had to build a structure using spaghetti and tape and add a heavy object to the top of it – that had all involved fully engaged and racing for a team win.

Year 7 Pop-up Museum

Year 7 students have been learning about Ancient civilisations in History this term. They researched their chosen artefacts and created model for display in the Pop Up Museum held last week. It was great to see so many displays and what the students had learnt. Well done students and teachers.
